Still as good as ever. It's great to see that there's now a happy hour menu btwn 5-6pm.

Just ok sushi. I have had much better vegan roles and options. Price is okay and service was good. Very small space so make a reservation if you go.

The best vegan/vegetarian Japanese food ever! This is hands down one of our favorite meals to have. All the rolls are so good that they are a real treat. No place does vegan rolls like Tane, there's no close comparison. That's how good Tane is. There are other things on the menu like ramen, shared plates, nigiri and bowls. My focus is on the Specialty rolls. You can't go wrong with any- Sunset, Pacifica, Manila Dine, The wedge, Point Reyes. These are some of my favorites. Get the tea, goes really well with all the wasabi and soy sauce. The restaurant isn't too big so make sure you reserve. We have gotten seated without a reservation but we either got lucky or had to wait an hour or more. The service is super-friendly and efficient. The Japanese decor is so good and the ambient lighting just sets the mood for eating a lot of rolls.

Known for their vegan sushi selection we stopped in to grab a few of their most well known bites. Tempted, we got the katsu which was really good! There's tons of items to choose from their menu but we went with their two specialty rolls called the Wedge and Pacifica. The wedge (second pic on the right) wasn't good as it was overly sauced and heavy with the rice. BUTT the Pacifica was sensational. We ate half before I could get a pic and would totally return again just to get this again. We didn't get to try their ramen but would return again to taste that as well. Overall decent place to grab a bite if you're near stanford

Came in on a weeknight and it was super busy. Waitress said that there was a 30 minute wait and to leave our number (she said we were second in line). There were people that came in right after us and were seated. I then waited 45 mins and come to find she never added us to the waitlist!!! The app added us to the waitlist late and said we were actually 8th in line. What a joke. I've been here before and the food was great, but please be more organized and efficient next time.

My first time trying sushi !! I know very late !! But better late than never !!! Good part all vegan , so vegetarians like me find it easy to try . We ordered Manila dune and Waimanalo rolls !! There good but on the sweeter side . We did not like either of them cos of the sweetness, then we ordered garlic edamame and miso soup . Both were good , edamame was yummm .. then ordered goma miso ramen it was yummm too !! And then ended with yummy blue Berry cheesecake !!

We had an amazing meal here!!! We ordered two different rolls- unfortunately I don't remember which but I feel like you can't go wrong with anything here. I am really looking forward to returning and trying more things on the menu. Got the mixed berry cheesecake for dessert and this is an absolute must. It was soooo yummy!!! Cheesecake was one of the things I didn't think I'd be able to find a good vegan version of but Tane's is a dream!!! I still think about it periodically. I am excited for when I can return

Came here on a weekend evening after making a reservation in advance. We were the first to be seated during our reservation - the restaurant fills up fast though there are about 5-6 sushi bar seats available for walk-ins. Overall we did not enjoy this place as much as we had hoped. Maybe we were biased because we had just gotten back from Austin where nori had the vegan sushi we've tried. But to start, the service here was not great. Even though we were the first to be seated, people next to us ordered first while we had flag someone down just to put in our order. We ordered two sushi rolls - the Pacifica, which was supposedly the most popular, and the Manila Dune. We actually liked the Manila Dune more because the Pacifica had random flavors in it that didn't go well together all the time. Like too much garlic in some parts instead of subtle flavors. The garlic ramen we ordered also had random strong wafts of garlic and so did someone's dish who sat next to me. It wasn't great. And what else I didn't like about the ramen is that the ingredients leaned more seafood such as vegan scallops and mushrooms and then a random patty that tasted like sausage. I think they are doing no one any favors by not making their soup consistent in expected tastes and textures. It was disappointing for sure. Our experience was just okay and I'm not sure we would come back.

Came here for the first time tonight and was very impressed! We made a reservation online for 6pm, we arrived a bit early and were seated immediately. By 6:10, all tables were full, so I recommend making a reservation. Service was great and our food came out so quickly. We got the garlic edamame, corn ribs, half moon bay roll, wedge roll, and yuzu cheesecake. Everything was delicious! I eat meat but my fiancé is vegetarian so it was great to find a sushi place where he could eat everything on the menu. I wouldn't have guessed everything was vegan. We'd definitely come here again.

Super good vegan sushi and service was amazing! Service was fast and the quality was impeccable.

I was just wondering if this Berkeley spot was related to Shizen in the Mission since the distinctly plant-based culinary approach seemed pretty similar to me (review: https://yelp.to/vNYPXTu3eJ). It turns out the trio of co-owners did indeed create Shizen and that this is the second location of Tane after they opened the first one in Honolulu. The signage was so subtle that I barely noticed the restaurant from the sidewalk. I was early on a weekday evening so I had no trouble securing a table across from an unshy Asian couple who looked like they ordered half the menu. I decided I needed a drink, so I ordered the $13 carafe of Sho Chiku Bai Nigori (Photo 7). I'm a fan of Takara Sake, so I was immediately pleased with the milky flavor and coconut notes. It was hard to decide what to order as they offer quite a robust menu. I first tried the $12 Shizen Shiitake, a rustic plate of a half-dozen shiitake mushrooms they stuffed with shredded tofu and matcha salt drizzled with a hoisin-like sauce (Photo 10). It was good, just a bit uneventful for my palate. My second dish was the $17 Wedge, a decorative specialty tempura roll with spicy tofu, green onion, ichimi chili pepper, sesame, spicy aioli, and sweet shoyu (Photo 9). It was a bigger serving than I was expecting. Not that I was complaining because it was packed with far more interesting flavors than the stuffed mushrooms. It was a bit challenging to pick up intact, but who the hell cares? I was dining solo. I decided to end my meal with a couple of $7 vegan nigiri orders, the Eggplant with Scallions (Photo 8) and the Shiitake (Photo 6). Genuinely delicious for vegan fare. Now that's the Shizen I remember. FOOD - 4 stars...vegan Japanese specialties with character and flavor AMBIANCE - 4 stars...subdued with tables well spaced SERVICE - 4.5 stars...cordial and quite attentive TOTAL - 4 stars...Shizen reborn in the East Bay RELATED - Exploring Berkeley? Agedashi tofu
Amber C.

Did not expect vegan sushi to be this good. Joined the waitlist on yelp 30 min before we planned on eating, then we were immediately seated when we got there. Got the agedashi tofu , ewa, point reyes, and futo maki rolls. My favorite was definitely the wedge, but loved the spiciness of the point reyes too. Will definitely be back to try their other specials! Ambiance was nice, dimly light like a fancy restaurant.

I wasn't sure if the high ratings were just because Berkeley's sushi scene tends to lean more casual, but Kiraku completely exceeded my expectations. It reminded me of the izakayas I loved in Vancouver and Toronto--thoughtful dishes, great flavors, and that cozy, lively energy that makes you want to order one of everything. Pretty much every dish hit. The A5 wagyu with uni was a banger. The tako wasabi was solid. The black cod literally melted in my mouth. The mini kaisen donburi was packed with premium ingredients and so delicious. Extra points because they actually deep-fry the shrimp heads too, which I love. Overall, Kiraku is a must-try and I'd recommend it to anyone in the Bay Area.

Inside is definitely cozy and you'll be sitting fairly close to the tables next to you. Service was really fast and easy - no complaints at all! The food was all great. Standouts were garlic edamame, 6pc omakase, beef tongue, pork belly, negitoro maki, corn tempura, & sweet potato creme brulee. Edamame was lightly charred and salted well, with generous amount of garlic flavor. Omakase was fresh and tasty, although a tiny bit small so definitely perhaps get your own instead of sharing one order between two. Beef tongue was hands down the best thing. I thought it was a boneless short rib with how tender it was (can break apart with chopsticks). The pork belly was also soft and went well with the spicy miso. Negitoro was fresh and the wasabi was grated very well. Corn tempura was perfectly fried and very crispy while still being soft inside. Lastly, the creme brulee was a great dessert. You do get a hint of the sweet potato. Would love to return to try other dishes!

Naturally, we ordered as many chicken skewers as possible, and every single one was fantastic. The hearts were especially impressive--soft and tender, which is rare since most places tend to overcook them. The karaage was also top notch. The biggest surprise was the bonjiri. I had to look it up, and once I realized it was basically the chicken equivalent of rich, fatty oxtail-style meat, I knew I had to try it. Holy hell, it was easily the best chicken skewer I've ever had. I would honestly come back just to order multiple of these. The squid ink rice was incredibly savory and filling, and paired with a few beers, this made for such a great evening out. All in all, Ippuku is a must-visit in Berkeley if you're into izakayas.

My favorites were the crab croquettes, chicken heart, one of the marinated skewers (I can't recall the name of it), gizzards, and the squid ink fried rice. I'm definitely curious to try the bacon-wrapped mochi at a future visit. The only downfall was that the kitchen was extremely backed up during our visit. It took well over what felt like 20-30 minutes from our 1st order to our 2nd Chef's Choice dish. That negatively impacted our experience, but it happens. I'd like to try Ippuku again and hope there will be less of a delay. Our server was nice & attentive, came around a few times to refill our water.

It was conveniently located across the street from the venue, and the unassuming outside of the restaurant did not hint at the amount of fun, ambiance, good food, and warm hospitality contained inside. First, there is the name. Not sure if it's some sort of play on words, secret joke, or if it's someone's actual name, but it works, kinda. It's kinda a restaurant, kinda a bar, kinda of a hangout, and kinda fun. The tiny entrance and plain facade reveals a bustling world of delicious food, tasty beverage, and lots of decorative eye candy to keep you looking around the space while you are hanging out with friends, on a date, or just relaxing after a long day. The decorations there are very upbeat, eclectic, fun, and distinctly Japanese pop culture. Posters, banners, flags, lanterns, toys, and trinkets can be found all over the restaurant, and made it fun to keep looking around and discover new novel things to look at. I did feel like I was in an authentic Izakaya somewhere in Shinjuku, Shibuya, or Ebisu in Tokyo. The place had a lot of personality & personal flair in an otherwise, tiny & industrial small warehouse type space. Service was excellent. The host was the cute & personable Mina, who couldn't have been more accommodating, patient, friendly, and engaging. It was very busy, and even though it was our first time there, Mina made us feel welcome into their home and was also very helpful to guide us around their experience. The other staff were less engaging, but still professional, efficient, and polite. Service was quick, attentive, and friendly on all accounts, and they as a team, managed to serve an entire full house of hungry & happy patrons during the entire Saturday night dinner rush. Fun place with a good staff. We opted for Izakaya-type, shared small plates to satisfy our hunger cravings without getting too full and weighed down on big portions of heavy, rich foods. Everything on the long & expansive menu looked great, but we mostly stuck with small appetizers to sample & savor. It was nice that there were plenty of lighter, fresh vegetarian options as neither of us were really in the mood for seafood, fried food, or big heavy entrees. We ordered the Kinda Tofu, Kyuri sliced fresh cucumber salad, and Kinoko butter-grilled mushroom hot platter and washed it down with some green grape Jinro soju. Everything was pretty good! Not overly fried, greasy, salty, or seasoned. Lightly cooked, delicately glazed, with just enough seasoning & oil/sauce to make it taste good, but not end up too complicated or messy. The taste really came through using these minimal cooking & seasoning techniques. The taste of the original vegetables & tofu came through perfectly, and were only complimented by their light hints of adding flavor. Portion sizes were ample for two people, and presentation was appetizing and organized. The bill for 3 apps + 1 bottle of Soju was less than $50, so it was a good value for the fun experience & good food. Wait times during the dinner rush are long, and there isn't really anywhere to sit or stand, so reservations are recommended. You can also enter and go straight to the 10-seat bar if there are openings, but we got a table for two after around a 20-30 minute wait. After that, everything moves pretty quickly, from ordering, getting food & drinks, to wrapping up and getting your check. Perfect system if you're trying to get to a concert, movie, or appointment with a specific start time. I really liked this place, not Kinda, not Sorta, but Definitely, or Absolutely! Kinda Izakaya will always be our destination to eat & hang out next time we come back to Berkeley, it is a true gem of a Japanese Izakaya/light meal fare right in the heart of downtown Berkeley. It's fun, tasty, busy, and friendly. Small & cozy, yet also airy & comfortable.

Unfortunately no photos as we devoured the food! However here is my review otherwise:…read more 1. Location- easily accesible in off Piedmont Ave, found parking alongside an adjacent neighborhood street that was free. I went around 430pm on a weekday. 2. Staff/Vibe- very friendly and throughout the service so many stopped by to check-in. Waters were constantly topped off and food was delivered very promptly. The restaurant itself is very intimate and tabletop dividers are largely used to shared tables. It was a really nice approach. I wasn't a major fan of the chairs for the tall tables. I was hoping for some more ergonomically friendly. Food- SIGNATURE RAMEN- 5/5. So good. The broth was so good I think I drank it all before eating any ramen and toppings. It was a wonderfully hearty ramen with a balance of fresh and simple ingredients. This was perfect and allowed the delicious broth to really be the star. LAMB RAMEN. 5/5. If you like south indian curries then this is a must. The dense cumin taste, fresh onions and lamb made this ramen feel very familiar. The flavours were so wonderfully constructed on this. VEGAN KAARAGE MUSHROOM. Made to be reminiscent of fried chicken, these were very pleasant and paired with our broth. I would order this again. I am interested in knowing the preparation method for this as the inside was piping hot while the outside was just warm- almost like it was reheated. I would like these to be crispier with a bit more light seasoning. Overall looking forward to the next visit!

Love this spot for all the things! High quality food and a nice vibe, two of my favorite attributes…read moreof a five star restaurant. Everything I have had here has been delicious. Current favs: 1) beef bulgogi- super generous portion and great flavor. Make sure to soak up all that sauce! 2) karage & gyoza: I love both these items for a starter and hate choosing. This combo gives a little bit of each and I appreciate it. Sauce has a little kick and is delightful. 3) wagyu and pineapple skewers- just.say.yes! 4) beans with wok you sauce. More please! The Kyoto matcha beer has a great flavor and is a nice treat. Have you been? If not, slide on down to The Public Izakaya and put your name on the sign in sheet. Wait patiently and enjoy a fantastic meal!

* Who: friend, partner, & I * What: late night dinner…read more* When: Saturday * Why: Pride weekend & needed to refuel after the night * Space/Decor: decent sized & more rectangular. Decor was cute & helped with the vibe w/o being too much. This would be a cute date spot or grabbing food to go. * Service: was OK/decent. My 1/2 challenge was the wait was really long & they didn't really communicate on actual wait time. The 2/2 challenge was at the end they also took a long time to check on us & give us the check. * Food: I don't mean to be a broken record but it was also OK haha. Like the tempura was crispy-ish. The sausage didn't really have a flavor. My partner did say the udon hit the spot ‍ * Final Thoughts: cute & busy Izakaya that can work for a romantic date or meet-up with friends, with a standard menu & to be expected flavor. I'd recommend & would return, though if it was between here or exploring a different spot, I'd go with explore. * Final Grade: B+ or 8.5/10
