Boddy and Soul Specialty Roll 10/10 Shio Ramen 8/10 Gyoza 10/10 Dessert 10/10 I love the boddy and soul specialty roll! I recommend it to anyone trying this place the first time. Service is great and welcoming. Interior is very bright and well designed. I'm excited to try other items when I come back.

MUST TRY when in SF! Especially for vegans. This place had been on my list for years and I was finally able to book a reservation a week in advance, which I highly recommend. When we got there, a few tables were full. Once we were seated, no tables were empty! This is a very popular spot. Our servers were amazing. They were knowledgeable on allergies and brought allergen friendly menus to our party upon request. We ordered miso soup, edamame, and about half of the specialty rolls. Every single bite was delicious. The portions were perfect for sharing. Our party of four felt satisfied after eating and truly enjoyed our experience. There were two vegans and two non-vegans in our party and every single one of us left happy. The non-vegans were surprised at how tasty each dish was and they are looking forward to bringing their non-vegan friends to try it. The restaurant is clean and gorgeous. They made do with the space and there is just enough room for the servers to get by and deliver the goods. Overall, it will make your trip to the city absolutely divine! :D

We had heard about this place a lot from friends, we wanted to try it for a while. We were able to get a reservation for a weekend dinner a week in advance. We highly recommend planning ahead for this one. The reservation for 4 was for 90 minutes. The place is small, cozy and has cute decor. We were seated promptly at our reservation time. We ordered drinks to start off - lemonade, a pineapple drink, mango juice and sake. For starters we got shishito peppers and panko-crusted bean curds. Drinks were good, peppers were average, bean curds were good. For mains we ordered 4 specialty rolls - body and soul, open invitation, secret weapon and missing piece - and the okra nigiri. All specialty rolls were very tasty and very well made. You can't go wrong with any of them! I'd skip the nigiri so you have more appetite for the specialties The wait staff was very helpful and patient and explained all the dishes to us when we said it was our first time visiting. The food is brought out very fast izakaya style. I'd definitely recommend this place and will be visiting again myself!

Food: we visited 2nd time since 2022! The quality of the sushi is still the same. Each preparation is unique! The description of each item is accurate. Service: super friendly and courteous Ambience: while Shizen by itself is a pleasure the business can't really help change everything around them. Parking becomes difficult due to the filth in the neighborhood. Although the "friendly folks" don't bother you while you park or leave. It smells repulsive and the neighboring street is filled with trash. Very unfortunate for such a great restaurant to be situated in this surrounding!

Came to try out this place with a couple friends! One of my friends has been here a few times and recommends it! We got gyoza and three of the specialty rolls to share! All were very delicious and I love that everything here is vegetarian/vegan. The service was very good as well and I loved the ambiance! The servers came to check up on us often. The restaurant itself does have limited seating, but they also take reservations through Yelp! Overall, definitely a fun and fresh dining experience, and I'd come again to try new dishes!!

Luckily I got reservations for Valentine's Day! Shizen was absolutely DELICIOUS. I loved everything- the service, the ambiance, the food, drinks. I've been wanting to try this place out for a minute and it did not disappoint. The Boddy and Soul was probably my favorite, but you literally can't go wrong with anything on the menu. I also highlighted the other sushi that we ordered. It was so good and I think I'll definitely be back!

Shizen never fails to impress. I've been here multiple times, and it's one of my favorite places to bring friends and family when they're visiting from out of town. What I love most is the variety of options. Whether you're in the mood for nigiri, sushi rolls, or ramen, there's something for everyone. The creativity and attention to detail in each dish make every visit enjoyable. Ratings: * Nigiri: 10/10 * Sushi: 9/10 * Ramen: 8/10 * Service: 9/10 * Ambiance: 9/10 Consistently great food, excellent service, and a welcoming atmosphere. Shizen remains one of my go-to spots and is always on my list when hosting out-of-town gue

Very good vegan sushi! The rolls were super tasty and similar to normal speciality sushi rolls. The proud peacock was similar to a rainbow roll and the variety of toppings were all very refreshing. Boddy and soul resembled a fire cracker roll - this was a group fave. The mushroom platter was also pretty good. I thought the agedashi tofu could use a lighter batter. the nigiris were probably the only items i feel were furthest from actual sushi but were still tasty in their own way.

The perfect evening! Reservations through the Yelp app for dinner at 6:15 pm. Free Sunday parking right across the street. Christy the amazing Manager and hostess welcoming us so warmly and seating us 18 minutes before our reservation time. Wonderful, attentive and prompt service from our server Alan( extra ginger - twice, the birthday dessert surprise, great suggestions). Beautiful food - lovely mushrooms, best Miso soup ever, surprise ending with the shot of sake in the middle, Brussels sprouts , a smooth Shizen lemonade and wonderful hot tea. The freshly prepared red bean donuts were to die for. Best seats in the house. Shizen the upscale, recent Michelin star recipient was a unique, fun, delicious and memorable experience.

Absolutely mind blowing vegetarian sushi's! My friends and I loved this place and I highly recommended! They have different types of palatable sushi! The ambience was great and the service was fast! Will definitely go back!

The food here never misses, however service was lacking at my last visit. We made a reservation and watched ~15 people get seated before us so we weren't seated until 30 minutes after our reservation. The restaurant was busy as always, but once seated we didn't get any menus and couldn't get anyone's attention, and eventually we walked over and grabbed the menus ourselves. Not to mention, it still took a bit after getting someone's attention for them to come over and take our order. I love the food at shizen but our recent experience was disappointing :/ (Boddy and Soul is my favorite roll)

Can we make a reservation for a party of 5?

    Yes

    Do they have high chairs?

Yes they have high chair seating.

Do they have tables for greater than 4 people? Thinking about going with 6 people total.

Yes, they usually make 6 people table by joining 3 tables.

If I want to eat alone (party of 1) on a Friday night, should I expect a reasonable wait for bar seating or am I better off making a reservation for a table for 1?

I"d much rather sit to a table . For one thing to get a better Service. Actually The host's job is to seat hungry people and to set diners' expectations for how long they'll have to wait for their meal. When a restaurant takes reservations, hosts…

Any of the items in their sushi menu served with cooked vegetables?

Yes - quite a few use cooked vegetables. I would say more are cooked than raw.

Do you guys offer Jain or no-onion no-garlic food?

Am sure they can, I avoid those and never have a problem, they will work with you.

Are there gluten and soy free options? Unfortunately I have issues with both. Please let me know which may be okay as I'd LOVE to come for a meal. Thanks!

There are a LOT of gf options, clearly marked on the menus. I was not looking for soy free, so I didn't notice. Email them. They were super helpful to me via email!

Would they take photos of IDs and Covid Vaccine Cards instead of physical copies for Dine-in?

    Yes

Is there a parklet or other outdoor seating?

there was one outdoor table when I went there, but it was on a sidewalk

Do they still do the online waitlist?

No, they are reservation only and offer limited seating times

Do they accept digital covid vaccine records?

    Yes. With your license.

    Are most menu items nut-free?

Yes! I have a severe peanut and tree nut allergy and their menu had little-to no nuts.

Delivery or work with a delivery app service?

No, they offer pick up or dine in only!

Do they only have white rice? Some places have black rice, brown rice, or quinoa options. My friend's blood sugar spikes from white rice.

    I only saw white.

What are the best rolls here going to order for first time?

Hidden Agenda, Boddy and Soul, Secret Weapon (spicy), Proud Peacock. But if any of them are calling your name they are all delicious!

Is the menu completely vegan? I see they hav aoli options and I just want to make sure it does not contain actual mayonnaise.

Yes, the menu is 100% vegan...down to the vegan aoli

Is Shizen open for takeout during shelter-in-place? I could really go for some now...

    Unfortunately no.

Is Shizen doing takeout right now or anyone know if there will be eventually?

Sorry, we live in Seattle and have no idea.

Has anyone actually ever reserved a table online? I see stated on the Shizen website that "We offer very limited online reservations and hold the majority of tables for walk ins", but I cannot find even 1 table for 1 person for 2 months in advance.

Yes, you can reserve a table ... so far I was able to make reservation only at 5pm

    Do they have gluten free?

yes, they have many gluten free items and can alter other items to make them gluten free as well.

I love Rintaro and it's truly some of the best and most authentic Japanese food you can get in SF…read more I started with the yosedofu which is their housemade silken tofu served with shaved katsuobushi and shitake soy sauce. It's a great cold dish to start. Then we got the oden with the mochi filled tofu purse, beef tendon and fish ball. Really yummy and the tendon is so silky soft. Then finally we shared chicken oyster skewers, chicken thigh and green onion skewers, the pork katsu and tuna don. It was really fantastic meal and good progression ending with the final rice dish. The skewers have a great charcoal taste and we loved the seaweed they give you with the tuna rice to make little wraps with. It's a really delicious combination. I know they make a lot of the stuff in house but the dishes itself is very simple, ingredients and cooking method. That said, it is very expensive for what they are offering. The karaage was fried well but it was very salty and sweet at the same time. Yosedofu is not my thing. Maybe I just don't like cold tofu but it's just tofu with ginger, scallions and bonito flakes. Negima was ok. A bit dry and very small piece. Tsukune was ok but they charge $3 for a sauce which is basically just an egg yolk. Tonkatsu felt like they boiled the pork chop and then fried it. Oden was very underwhelming. Thr mochi thing was unique but I didn't like it. One of the pieces was just a daikon that tasted like a daikon... Kamatama udon is just udon with the same toppings as the yosedofu. Other than the homemade udon, you can def make this at home.

Usually these types of places serve like $5-$8 each skewers that taste bland and not filling/ satisfying. but taniku know how to actually bring out flavor from skewers making it feel more worth it. My best friend and I came here on a whim and really glad we did. The drive up was a little sketchy but the place is a small little unassuming spot - cutesy. There was a line outside and a 10-15 min wait for us (because of how small the place one) but we didn't mind. Service was also a tiny bit odd / slow but I'm not type to care too much about that especially if it's busy and the food comes on reasonable time + food is good. Customers waiting in line outside seemed confused and out of loop kept asking me since I was in front of line if there was a line or waitlist/how long the wait was. Another odd thing is their menu. I saw reviews / pictures of food that wasn't on the paper menu they gave so it was confusing what they actually offered. We ordered the Niku ramen : change to rice bowl (really good portion sizing for japanese place) tasty flavoring. not too meaty taste. kimchi was random but worked well, cut the beef sweetness and savoriness. +Added $5 soft shell crab for topping. Very good. Typically fried soft shell crab. Crispy, crabby. Scallop hand roll: seaweed was a little soft for my liking. scallop quality was very yummy. loved the yuzu. Thought the spicy mayo + yuzu pairing was too much clashing flavors. Pork Belly Skewers: sooo good. Crispy outer. soft inner. Flavorful. Chicken meatball skewer: raw egg sauce helped put it all together enhancing and uplifting the chicken itself. The ribeye wasn't super tender but tasty. The snow crab hand roll came with so much snow crab, I felt like it's one of the few hand rolls I've had that was filling. If you come for happy hour, they have good deals on ramen. I think like $13ish, which is a great deal. It ends promptly at 5:30, so plan to get there well before 5:30 if you are looking to take advantage. Something to think about it, Theres no sign up list for waiting for tables, and everyone who's waiting just lines up outside and down the block (no waiting inside). Arrived on valentines weekend without a reservation. Initially thought the door was locked with a…read morefull house of customers inside and almost walked away but looks like you need to shove the door open. Ambiance was so cute very intimate but not much conversational privacy. Ordered the chicken, wagyu steak, beef tongue, okra, eel, scallop, and pork belly skewers. Also had the yuzu cheesecake. All skewers were juicy and delicious 10/10 every item was a hit. Wagyu was soft and not too welldone, scallop was flavorful and soft, chicken was so juicy, tender, and had strong flavor. Yuzu cheesecake - small light fluffy with a light caramel like sauce - emptied the plate 10/10 Would definitely come again.

Inside it's a cute and intimate restaurant with a long bar and a few tables. I've been coming to this place over the years and looks like they recently expanded by taking over the next door. Now you can enter to an expanded area through a wall that didn't exist previously to another two bar areas. This place is probably best for date nights and couples rather than large parties. Good variety of izakaya choices including chicken thighs, chicken parts, pork belly, scallops, and some beef options. I found the izakaya solid but not outstanding. The skewers are a little too saucy for my taste which I prefer more the traditional simple salt which you find in Japan. Also, I wish they had more charcoal flavor to the izakayas. On the other hand, I thoroughly enjoyed the chicken skin gyoza which uses chicken skin as wrappers. It's an interesting twist to your traditional gyozas. The fried oysters were good, juicy, and crunchy. They also have a very good selection of sakes and drinks.
