Holy Cross Care, more like Holy Cross Hell! After having…read moreextensive foot surgery in August of 2020 I was sent to this place without asking my opinion from St. Joseph Hospital. The first thing they do is isolate you for 14 days even though you have had multiple covid tests. Then they allow you 20 minutes to meet with your wife or caregiver outside separated by a 6' long table who has not had a covid test. They get you out to the dining area for your meals & then you wait up to an hour for your food which comes from a central campus location so it's almost always cold & tasteless. Once your put back in your room the real fun begins. They have a call alert button to contact the staff who responds in 10-60 minutes & sometimes not at all. I talked to several patients & they said they had to have their beds changed multiple times a day because they couldn't keep from emptying their bladder including myself. The night crews were the worst, always watching the game show network instead of taking care of patients. I had a wound vac on my foot that was supposed to be changed every day, sometimes it didn't get changed for days! With no Doctor visiting me in my room they could do what they wanted 24/7. The final straw for me was when I came back from physical rehab one day & the AC wasn't working in my room on a HOT August day. Maintenance came & said they fixed it but all they did was get the blower to blow more hot air. I asked them to get me a fan & they said they didn't have any so I attempted to sleep that night. When I woke up I was in a complete sweat all over my body & my heart was racing. I called the night staff & nothing was happening so I started screaming for the head nurse to call an ambulance. Fortunately I got out of that place & after a hospital visit for my heart I never went back. They had 2 GREAT nurses that took good care of me when they had me as a patient, the rest of the team I would fire for the quality of care they provided or because they either didn't wear their face masks or wore them improperly down below their nose. Stay away from this place, you will be glad that you did. Don't let St. Joseph Hospital send you here no matter how nice they say it is, it's not!

What I saw during a recent admission at Sanctuary is NEVER acceptable. One poor man fell out of bed…read moreover and over again and they blamed the resident and said he just wanted to fall when he was screaming on the floor for help. Another lady that had heart trouble and was on oxygen kept complaining that she could not breath, Sanctuary's answer was she was just "anxious" And then the nurse for the night shift came in and told another staff member that the oxygen machine was not working. In the case of food forget it if you have a diabetic patient. They serve heavy deserts and that at the round eating table with all the residents present the nurse will test your sugar in front of everyone and announce the results. Forget about seeing the head physician. I was told he does not have to see patients until they are admitted for more than 30 days. He does ask a nurse who you are a few days before the insurance stops paying for your treatment and then tells you have to leave even if it is not safe for you to return home. Sanctuary does not tell you but if the nurse practitioner is called in after her hours, there is an extra charge. The nurse practitioner will not come in during the weekend to see anyone. I was told by a family member that a patient needed to be treated in the ER more than once at her own expense because of circumstances related to her care while staying at Sanctuary. The staff is mostly temp CNAs because of the lack of proper permanent staffing and they do not know all the health risks of the patients. I saw a patient who was supposed to have a drink thickener due to his swallowing issues either not given a sufficient amount or none at all. The poor man kept coughing and throwing it up. This was not a concern to the aids or nurses. If a patient needs a prescription it has to be delivered from Indianapolis and could take a few days. There was a time when Sanctuary lost track of a resident and the resident could not be found because of the inadequate supervision and security. The resident left for home without Sanctuary knowing. The therapy room where the residents use the heavy exercise equipment had not been moped or cleaned in weeks. the staff never wiped the equipment down even though patients coughed and sneezed over everything. The p.t./o.t. therapist were always passing around candy to each other in front of the patients and worried more about ordering Jimmy John's food for lunch. I personally saw one therapist ask another therapist to work on her leg and pull it in the middle of a therapy session with another patient. She said "she did not like to exercise at home". Do not select Sanctuary for your friends or relatives for long term care or rehabilitation. The problems at the facility comes from poor administration. If your relative or friend is not receiving proper care at Sanctuary or at another nursing home file a complaint with the State of Indiana Ombudsman or with Medicare. In the current system only money talks and it is Medicare or an insurance company which pays the facilities for the care of your loved one.

Tonight they took an entire hour to bring me pain medicine and I heard them discussing the Democrat Debate instead of bringing my meds to me when I was in a LOT of pain but do they care? Not at all!! When I was in the hospital after my hip replacement surgery, the staff was much better overall and actually had a caring attitude towards me as a patient. Memorial Hospital is great but this place has many crappy staff who must hate their jobs cause if they didn't, they would not treat the patients like crap over and over again!! So if not for bringing my own food and supplies I would have not eaten anything for 5-6 days. And as for my meds, they were confused about that also. It's not approved yet but soon. I heard that for a day or two. So if you're coming here or sending a loved one. Good luck. It's very hit and miss with the nurses. Here's an example of the way things are here. Not sure of spelling) said she would personally call my mom to apologize- she didn't. That's a shame because she is probably the only decent thing about that place aside from the speech therapist. The place was dirty. The receptionist buzzed us in without asking any info- so not really 24 hour security. Although the receptionist was rarely at her desk. Same for nurses who were far and few between- you could rarely find help. Save yourself the headache and find another place with better quality care. One that doesn't need its own employees to rate their business.

In reaching out to Senior Helpers, they were immediately responsive to our needs. They came to Mom's home, checked things out, talked with her and then called to say they were on board with helping us. All of Mom's children are out of state and so it was important to have people we could trust that were there and close to Mom. There were a few hiccups the second week. Senior Helpers were at Mom's home the next day, addressed any issues and assured us that there wouldn't be any more problems, and they were right. Now to the amazing part. Mom became terminal pretty quickly and Hospice was called in. It was determined that someone needed to be with Mom 24/7. A family member was there with Mom by that time but had to leave to go home, out of state. There would be a lapse of 36 hours before a family member would be with Mom again. So what does Senior Helpers offer up? They will stay overnight and all day with Mom until another family member arrives. This was done on 2 days notice. When asking them if they were able to find someone to stay overnight with Mom, the woman that answered the phone (Kim) said that if they didn't have any caregivers available, SHE WOULD COME AND STAY OVERNIGHT WITH MOM! Who, in this day and age, does that? In a time of high stress for us, these people were amazing. I would highly recommend this group to anyone. Nothing/no one is perfect but they come pretty darn close.

Alz/Dem patients need constant attention and interaction. Senior Helpers more than meets this need with its extensive library of ambient videos of fish and other animals. Your loved one will get all of the love and attention he or she needs with constant reminders from the caregiver to "Watch the video" or "Look at the cute little kitten." Alz/Dem patients need assistance with most of the basic daily tasks. A seasoned Senior Helpers caregiver will always make sure your loved one goes to the bathroom unless he or she resists in any way. Then, you'll come home to soiled pants and other dirty laundry. Alz/Dem patients need to take medication daily. Count on Senior Helpers to assist with this task until your loved one experiences any level of trouble with it. Then, you will be told that any task involving medication requires medical training, which Senior Helpers does not provide. So, what does Senior Helpers provide? If you're looking for a caregiver who's the equivalent of a car pool dummy, then I suggest you give them a call.

We researched all home care companies in the northern Indiana area and decided on two different companies, Home Instead being one of them. My sister called and talked to Eric at Home Instead around Christmas. She explained that we wanted to set up an account should their services be needed for our mother. Eric told my sister that they were short staffed (holidays) but that someone would be out to meet our mother and get something set up. A lady did meet with our mother (and Hospice) to determine her needs. Eric had indicated that he would call my sister back to get financial information to set up an account. My sister called back today because she had not heard from anyone at Home Instead. When she talked to Eric, he couldn't find a file, thought our mother lived in another city and he was generally vague with my sister, telling her he'd research it and get back to her. When he called back, he stated that our mother had refused to sign any paperwork for them. My sister reminded him that she had told him in the beginning that we have POA, and that the visit was just one to set up an account should we need their services. Eric was confrontational with my sister and after much conversation with him, she told him she didn't have a lot of faith/confidence/trust in Home Instead at that point. Eric told her she should find another company to help out our mother. When my sister said she was going to do that, Eric said "Good Luck" and hung up on her! No apologies for the lack of follow up, lack of remembering/understanding what our needs are, and then to be defensive and hang up on her? Not a good solution or resource for us.
