One of the smaller venues for Tangra Masala locations, this place still has some amazing food. I met my friend here for a quick lunch as he suggested it. The food was prepared fresh, quick and is priced reasonably for the portion size given. We ordered the lollypop chicken, chicken hot and sour soup, chicken tangra masala fried rice, mixed manchurian fried rice, and Chili chicken gravy. Tangra Masala has a rep for great authentic halal Chinese food and this visit was no different. Consider this or any of their locations for great food at a great price. read more

I have been going to Tangra Masala for the last 13 years (minimum). I was introduced to this place by a friend in college and have been a loyal customer since then. I don't live in NY anymore but whenever I visit, a stop at this place is an absolute must. Their most popular dishes are lollipop chicken, chicken pakora (my fav) and the tangra masala fried rice (also my fav). Their Manchurian (gravy) is really good too. They recently did the inside of the restaurant and it has more of an open architecture now -- love it! Only con - they don't take credit/debit card. Only cash. I hope they change that policy soon, however, I still can't take a star away for that. Must go!! read more

Obnoxious people and clearly poor control of the kitchen. We are a completely vegan/vegetarian mix household...there was a BONE in the paneer dish. After calling the place and speaking to "Inna" she denied that it could be possible. My family is on the way to return the food but the reaction was PATHETIC. Instead of having the decency and accepting the issue and promptly resolving it they said they want to see proof (sent them a picture too..also attached) in person and want all the dishes returned. We order from once in a while when we crave spicy fish fingers. They have a variety to indo Chinese seafood options which makes the place a good find. Only reason I give them a 4 star is the delivery cost was a bit higher compared to other alternatives. read more

I picked up food from here and confirmed with them that everything was freshly made. The lady said we make everything fresh. After reaching home and opening the boxes the food looked stale, didn't taste good and was not appropriate to eat in ongoing health conditions. My last review of this place was in 2012 when I gave it five stars. Since then the food and service has deteriorated. This would be my last visit. I loved this place so much I did not want to give up on it. I have been going there for more than six years. Although they newly renovated the food has gone from bad to worst. Some of my favorite were spicy chicken wings and lollipop chicken not forgetting the pad Thai. The food is not made to order anymore. There is no need for a chef. My family and I usually do take out from here whenever I am in New York. It's not really your typical Indo-Chinese food, meaning I've had much better. They give you a large quantity but the food seems to lack in flavor & a lot of oil to it's dishes. To be honest the only reason we even do take out from here is because this is the closest place to Rego Park & others usually want it. Me on the other hand, not a big fan of it. It was my first time eating at Tangra Masala. It was a little bit dark inside for lunch time and the staff were nice. I ordered Chicken Tangra Masala, Fish with Ginger & Scallion and Shrimp Fried Rice. I liked the Fish with Ginger & Scallion, it has a balanced taste of the sauce and ginger. Chicken Tangra Masala was good, they cooked it well with that spicy gravy and it's actually pretty good. Shrimp Fried Rice is average, it was cooked with basmati rice which i love btw. read more

The food here is very tasty but kind of expensive if you don't go during lunch time. I love the Manchurian fish with a side of the lollipop sauce (I don't know what they put in there but it is ridiculously good) and salt and pepper shrimp. Very delicious food. The last time I went it was cash only and I don't know if they changed that but be aware of that. My husband and I went here for lunch today. I liked it a lot and will go back. I am always up for something different. I have tried Chinese Indian before and I like the mix. We asked for mild since people here were complaining about the spice level but it was a mistake. Next time we want to experience the full flavor. We were just afraid because of the reviews. But we want to order it as it was meant to be experienced at it's regular heat level. We believe by doing this we cheated ourselves so we have to go back and try it again at full flavor. :) It is not one of those hipster hang outs popping up in places like Red Hook that have no real flavor or authenticity. There must be a near by hopsital because most of the people having lunch were wearing scrubs. Everyone except me was either Indian or Chinese. People on Yelp suggested the Lollipop chicken as an appetizer and we ordered that. We liked it a lot and it had this unique dipping sauce. Lunch came with soup. There were only 2 to choose from. Hot and Sour and corn soup. I had the corn soup which was basic corn soup but my husband had the hot and sour soup and he said it was more delicious and different than any he had before. It was loaded with cilantro and Indian spices to change the taste a bit. I had the Singapore noodles and he had the Chili chicken. We shared of course. Both were pretty good but not spicy enough but that was our fault for ordering the dishes mild. Worth a second trip for sure to discover the full flavor at this hidden gem in Queens. read more

I was there about a month ago. The service was awful, with a waiter sleeping at one of the tables. After he woke up, he was grumpy and sleepy, and argued with us about sauces, and complained that we were not listening to him, when in fact he was just mumbling, yawning, and we couldn't even understand him. Bottom line is we left angry and without the food we wanted to take home because he would not listen to us. We had been there dozens of times, but this was the first time we didn't tip. We came back today, willing to give them another chance, and the service was good, but they added a mandatory 15% "service charge" to the bill. So instead of fixing the waiter, they acted like WE were the problem and tried to make sure we tipped. (Yes, they recognized us.) It was insulting. Can we post photos here? This place has the rare ability to match bad food AND bad service. First of all, the food is entirely *overloaded* with ginger. I mean it, its way too much. Indian and Chinese food is supposed to be about the unique spices those two countries bring, but the only thing you'll taste in the food here is ginger. On top of that, if you even deign to ask the food to be made without ginger, you'll get a call from a rude "manager" stating "All our food already contains ginger, we can't take it out". If that's the case, why advertise that everything is fresh? It clearly isn't. If I wanted reheated food from a microwave, I'd just go to Olive Garden. read more

I have been going to this place ever since my cousin told me about it (5 years) but my latest experience was sour. I know inflation drives up prices but this place must be trying to get ahead of it. Prices were reasonable in the past but lately I think I paid an exorbitant amount for mediocre chinese food that came in smaller portions. In the past, their signature dish Chicken Tangra Chow Mein cost $6.95 and was plenty for two people. Now its $8.95 and the amount is definitely less. The second dish we ordered was Beef Chilli Dry which used to be $7.95 and now has jumped to $12.50. My problem with this dish is the amount of plain rice they give you. In the past, it used to be enough rice for two people, but recently it was an extremely small kid size portion. What do they expect you to do?........you got it.....order more rice at the cost of $1.95 which comes in that same kidz size. My waiter this time was that same grumpy guy that Roger talks about and what ever Roger said I experienced it to a "T" ! The food quality is down and the amount of chicken in the Chow Mein was also less. I am finally yelping today because I went through this the past 3 times I was there this year. Another new thing you will experience is that they now added the gratuity automatically when you get your check. Ordered the Chilli Chicken, Chicken Tangra Masala Fried Rice and Tangra Masala Tiger Prawn. All the food was flavorful and cooked well. The curry sauce was very good. Tangra Masala was sure in for an uphill battle, and it proved extremely successful! I got nervous when I first arrived. The restaurant is dark, cramped and cash-only. To make matters worse, there was a dead bird caught on the restaurant awning. But Tangra Masala fought back: (i) the restaurant received an A from the health dept; (ii) the service is efficient, helpful and friendly service; (iii) wonderfully tasty food! We followed the general recommendation to order the lollipop chicken, and we enjoyed it! However, there were other dishes I, personally enjoyed more: chili chicken and the singapore noodles. I dined with a friend who thought some flavors were missing, but I didn't sense this. Overall, I had a very good dining experience. If you're on the R, hop off at Grand Avenue - Newtown and walk half a block to Tangra Masala. You'll be satisfied. read more

My Guyanese American friend took me here because I'm Chinese. So we complete the Indian Chinese fusion thing, lol. We ordered the lollipop chicken and I ordered the tangra masala chicken. He ordered the tangra masala lamb. I think the lollipop chicken was really great and the sauce complimented the savory flavor. The tangra masala was a little too spicy for me even though I asked them to make it less spicy but if you like spicy food this restaurant is great! Excellent Indian Chinese - literally everything I've tried here has been good - though I'd recommend their Tangra Masala dishes a little bit more since the taste is uniquely Indo-Chinese. Cash-only is the only real sore spot. All the dishes tend to be a bit spicy (which I really like, but is still something to be aware of when you order so you can tone up/down the spice as needed). What a strange yet surprisingly delicious experience. I love Chinese food, and yet there is something disorienting (pun intended) about the food being cooked Indian style. I was skeptical at first, as I am whenever I walk into a fusion restaurant, but I walked out believing that Tangra Masala is not your typical trendy Asian fusion joint. It's actually good! I don't like most Asian fusion restaurants because 1) they are trendy, 2) the portions are small, and 3) the prices are high. This place is none of the above. Good prices, hole in the wall (as my fellow Yelpers have said), and the portions are not bad especially if you're doing it family style. I love the spicy food - so good it brought a tear to my eye. One thing I wish this place had is Mango Lassi, but I suppose they're keeping true to Chinese food cooked Indian style. What I recommend: the Lollipop Chicken, and anything Tangra Masala. I was originally lured out to Tangra Masala by the prospect of lollipop chicken, but discovered that it serendipitously serves Indo-Chinese food. It was my first time eating Indo-Chinese food, so I'm glad they were gentle with me :P The lollipop chicken isn't impressive. The drumsticks look like lollipops, with the meat all bunched up at one end, but the coolness ends there. The batter was way too thick and crunchy, which made it difficult to get through. The sauce is good - it has a good sweet and spicy vibe - but not fantastic. If you live in Manhattan and you want these flavors you'd be just as well off getting a spicy chicken sandwich at Cafe Zaiya. I prefer the sandwich. My friend and I also had a couple entrees: the chicken tangra masala fried rice and the chili chicken. The fried rice was really good: pieces of chicken tikka masala mixed into fried rice with some heat to boot. The chili chicken, which I ordered with gravy, was more or less sesame chicken in a somewhat spicy sauce. Not bad, but not great either. Two stars for the lollipop chicken, four for the fried rice and three for the chili chicken, so overall three. I'm glad I checked out Tangra Masala, but I doubt I'll make the hour-plus trip out to Elmhurst for it again. read more

If you like spicy food, this is where you go. Customers only find out how tasty their food is when your tongue can stand the spicy taste. You have to watch out when you say "Medium Spicy." I doubt regular Americans can bare the mild level here. However, I call it "Authentic" in this case. You have to appreciate when restaurants don't compromise their recipes for money. Ordered food for delivery a long time ago. I don't recall what I got, but obviously the food wasn't good enough for a 2nd time. Ordered enough food for three people, but nothing stood out. It was extremely spicy, but that's pretty much it. I actually wanted food from Jackson Diner, but they don't deliver, and I was babysitting someone at the time so I couldn't get take-out. It wasn't cheap either. All these Indian restaurants have buffets making them a somewhat cheaper lunch/dinner option, but I don't go to buffets. I've wanted to try this place for some time, as I would pass it frequently on my way to a temple in the 'hood. When two Bombayites insisted that we should go here, I was happy to try it finally. I like Indian Chinese (or is it Chinese Indian?). It's more Indian than Chinese, and is sort of like an Indian vision of what Chinese food might be like, if that chef had never had Chinese food. It came highly recommended from a colleague at work and I couldn't believe how genuine the Indo Chinese flavors were! For those who follow the Islamic dietary regime, this is the prefect place for you can eat without reservation, as the meat is Halal. Indo-Chinese food is one of the most popular types of foods that comes from India, which adapts Chinese seasoning and cooking/techniques to South Asian tastes. Manchurian-(a sweet and salty brown sauce) is my favorite culinary style of this cuisine. Now to mention the most important part of Tangra is-BYOB for those who need a translation-(Bring Your own booze!) Take your favorite 6 pack of Heineken, or a nice bottle of white (reds don't go very well with Manchurian) you'll need the white to cool you down. This is the best "Indian Chinese" place on the east coast. This place reminds me of the inexpensive Chinese street food I used to eat in Bombay. Whenever it's cold or I'm plain sick I leave the city to cross the river only to come here. (I don't cross any rivers period but anything for Tangra). I usually get the lollipops, Tangra masala fried rice, chili fish, chicken Manchurian and the shrimp chow mein. This place doesn't just hit the spot it destroys it!
