Me and my friend didn't realize you couldn't bring outside food to the coffee shop (after I already purchased a drink at Tantra). Instead of politely asking us to take the food outside, they yelled, "No outside food, take it outside. Go eat it in your car". Honestly, they were so rude about it, I'm never coming back here again. Good fresh food and yummy Italian sodas in addition to wine and beer. We joke that the kitchen is so zen that they bring you your food when you are ready for it, not when you ask for it. First off I would like to say, that I do enjoy Tantra's coffee, and they have good food and a good selection of drinks and beers. Recently I've been put off by a few things, but I haven't decided if it was just miscommunication or Tantra's customer relation model. Prior to the current changes, I remember Tantra being one of the only coffeeshops customers could show up to on a freezing cold january morning minutes before the store opens, and have a friendly barista open the door to welcome them in, get them warm, and get them started on their morning day. there were many mornings when several people would show up between five and ten minutes before the 7:00am open time, order coffee that had already made, or at the very least stay inside or sit on the porch watching the sun rise. This doesn't appear to be the case anymore. I was out on a morning walk and it was right around 30 degrees outside. I decided to walk over to Tantra for some coffee. I got there just before 6:40 and waited on their porch for nearly 20 minutes in some very cold weather. One of the owners barely acknowledged me by making eye contact several times but gave no indication on whether it was ok to step inside, or if he still needed more time for the shop to open. This may have been more than anything a miscommunication, but it was pretty offsetting, and I decided to walk home instead of sticking around. This may not strike anyone as out of the ordinary if they are unfamiliar with Tantra's great customer relations a year or more ago. Again perhaps this was a misunderstanding more than anything. If this wasn't a mistunderstanding however, and this is how Tantra wishes to operate their business from hence forth, I don't have much of a problem taking my business to a place which is more personal invested and accomodating for their customers. read more

Hooray! I have found a coffee haven for my new neighborhood. Having moved to San Marcos for school, I have been on the prowl for my return- to -student -life -world. This world includes a good coffee shop, for studying and the essential caffeine fix (doubly important for the grad student who will probably spend most of this time in college actually studying). It also includes a couple of good sandwich joints, good late night local feeling bar or pub to drink away that overload of information cramping up the space in your head, and a nice outdoorsy place for reading or studying. I've gotten off track here...oh yeah, the coffee place. It comes before everything else. Fortunately for me I happened to stumble upon a GREAT one which is also near my house. Tantra was awesome. My sister and I went for breakfast. We kept it simple with a toasted bagel and creamed cheese and breakfast taco for her. Both were good, but it is hard to mess those things up. Most importantly though, the coffee was amazing! And the ambiance was great, I loved the different rooms (it used to be some sort of old house. I love those types of homey atmospheres). They had a great porch in front which I will probably frequent as it gets warmer. And the staff was super friendly. If you are taking classes from Texas State or are ever in the San Marcos area, you gotta make a stop here. I only gave it four stars because I just started going, I'm sure as it becomes a frequent locale I will bump it up a notch. read more

Four years ago, while trying to get a feel on San Marcos, I stopped by this little joint. I liked the ambiance and the feel of the place, but the staff was awful. Not out rightly rude or anything, but condescending and judgmental. A very, "oh you drove a car not a bike" attitude,that and they looked dirty. I don't want my food/drink from someone who looks like they can't remember their last shower. No shoes or smoking right at the door and window without washing your hands when you go back to work? DISGUSTING. The espresso in my latte was burnt from sitting leftover from another shot. I decided to give this place another try, four years later, and had an identical experience. I am glad it's here because it has given other people a place to hang out and to be, but I will very likely never be stepping foot in there again. read more

Very disappointed. I asked for a vanilla latte with almond milk. As a barista myself I thought this was pretty simple. Yet I had to repeat myself multipleee times. I still tipped well and in the end received it ICED when I repeated myself that I wanted it hot. There was no one in line except me when I ordered so no reason for a mess up. I would like to respond to Mr. Kevin N.'s comment here: "I'd surmise that these may tend toward the singer-songwriter or twenty-seven minute drum circle event" First- I'm not ripping on you at all- you gave the place a high rating and had the courtesy to say "surmise" rather than state an assumption as fact. Honestly, Tantra does seem as though it would be a place like that, so it was certainly a fair guess on your part- but an incorrect one nonetheless. I moved to San Marcos recently from Austin and Tantra may have the best music I've heard from both cities combined (granted, I'm under 21 and can't get into many of the Austin venues like the Elephant room and the Saxon Pub). What I love most about it is the diversity- you will hear poetry, "singer-songwriter and 27-minute drum circle," Funk, that kind of everyone-knows-the-words-and-is-singing-along type of Rock, Folk, Dance beat, some badass fast pickin' Bluegrass, and even (rarely) the occational hip hop. I also heard it through the grapevine that they're searching for a couple of decent metal bands to play there every once in a while. The coffee is pretty decent, but what makes them stand apart drink-wise is the weird drinks they serve. I recommend the "Busy Bee," which is Mate (Ma-tay, a south american tea-ish drink with more caffeine than tea, about as much as coffee) mixed with honey and orange juice, for a sweet yet spicy kind of tang that will have you ordering seconds. I prefer the Busy Bee to the straight Mate, which is a bit overwhelming. Tantra's Tamales there are also great. In regards to the "don't write anything if you're affiliated with the business" statement, I have made friends with many of the employees there, BUT I had these opinions before knowing them, and I didn't know anybody affiliated with Tantra prior to becoming a regular there. read more

Great place for locals and students alike. But recently my family and I stopped by on a slow weekday and noticed that the whole outdoor area was completely littered with cigarette butts- not just a few here and there but many, many butts! Also the 4 staff behind the bar who were just hanging out and talking behind the bar did not try and clean up this outdoor area. read more

This was my second visit to Tantra. Great coffee to be sure, but the food was a sore disappointment. "Lost" my order of breakfast tacos, which made it a solid 40 minute wait for 2 tacos. Management had ample opportunity to offer a refund or a coupon, just said "we're really busy" and "I don't know what happened." Tacos came out, management disappeared. Learn from this review that customer service is about their experience, not your excuses. read more

"Coffeehouse" is a loose term, since they now only have 2-3 coffees available at any one time, but it is a very cool place to hang out. Lots of beers - reasonably priced. Evenings bring music (sometimes free, sometimes a small cover). There's some simple food - they don't have a real kitchen, just a cold area and mics, but they can do some awesome stuff with it. It's like taking a trip back to 60's haight ashbury without all the baggage. read more

This is my favorite coffee shop in town (and a lot of other towns for that matter). This locally owned small business takes pride in everything they do and offer high quality ingredients in both coffee and food. My favorite thing to order, Honey Latte. They not only use locally roasted, high quality coffee (which makes all the difference) but also a higher quality more environmentally friendly option for honey. After talking with the incredibly friendly and talented staff I learned that the baked goods are supplied by a small local baker. The environment is fun and cheery but you can certainly find a nice place to sit for a while and read or use the internet. The outside patio seating is located under a beautiful canopy of trees and the building itself is a quirky purple historic home. This is not your place to get your cheap coffee fix (try Mc Donalds?) this is the place to sit and savor an excellent cup of coffee or specialty coffee beverage. They can make you a better cup of any fancy flavored drink you might like but seriously sit down with a french press and enjoy the distinct and bold flavor of what gourmet coffee actually tastes like. It wont disappoint you. They also have great beers (also supporting some local breweries) as well as a wine. They often host live music including by donation blue grass every Wednesday night led by some of the finest Texas musicians around. My final compliment is they offer plenty of options for dietary restrictions; gluten free bread, vegan and vegetarian food, non diary cream etc. I truly love this place as do my friends and family, (my aunt and her friends always stop in when commuting from San Antonio to Austin). Tantra has the best atmosphere a coffeeshop can possibly have. The drinks are exotic, reasonably priced and delicious. The food is vegetarian and is fairly cheap. The place feels very broken-in and comfortable - the art on the walls is constantly changing and the people are always friendly and interesting to talk to. I go there about two or three days a week because I know I can relax, read a book, study, or have a conversation with anyone there. The clientele are just as good as the atmosphere and the service. Music, or open mic, or drum circle - something going on every single night. Unbelievable beer selection too. read more

Coming from the fabulous Common Grounds at Baylor, I was very excited to find what looked like another cool, independent coffee house to spend my down time in. I was very disappointed. The fiance and I went straight to the counter to ask for recommendations since we had never been there before. The service was fine, the gentleman who took our order was attentive and tried to make suggestions. I asked for a recommendation of something "warm and chocolaty" and was directed to the steamed Landry and my guy was directed to the cold Landry. What was upsetting is the guy recommended a drink that (little did I know) had NO CHOCOLATE in it and was typically cold. Note: they serve hot chocolate, hot espresso drinks flavored with chocolate, etc. which we didn't find out until we read the menu while our drinks were being made. The Landry has irish cream, half and half, etc. but was not even sweet. Also, my fiance's cold version had a coffee hint to it while mine tasted like watery warm milk. There went $9 for terrible drinks that we didn't finish, (they were that bad). I would really like to believe it was a one time accident, but I don't know that I will be giving Tantra more of my money. read more
