Really great casual restaurant. The wait staff was very courteous and attentive. I liked the decorations down the hallway and in the main seating area. The food was really fresh, except the rice (it was dried out a bit). Good choices for vegetarians. Many restaurants mess up veggies. This place knows how to make them. Not colorless and soggy and not undercooked. Nice crispy veggies with flavorful sauce. The pu-pu platter was a nice appetizer for 2. This is our FAVORITE Chinese restaurant. The family that owns it loves their craft and their customers. We always get the orange chicken as it's the best in the area. I wrote a review of Tao Yuan yesterday but Yelp pulled it and has not informed me why. We'll try again. I'm hoping the owners might see my review and shed some light on the situation. I've been eating at Tao Yuan for almost five years. The food is delicious, the staff very friendly. Unfortunately, they've been closed for a month. The date for reopening has changed multiple times but we're now three days past the last reopening date posted on their front door and they're still closed. Very sad! read more

I've eaten or had take out from this location a few times, just not impressed with their food quality/quantity. I usually order sesame chicken, this last time the chicken breaded pieces were the bottom of the batch or they forgot to add the chicken to the breading. Seemed to me it was 3-4 of an order, compared to moo goo hai pan, that order was packed full, same price, and lots of chicken. Last night was the first time we tried this restaurant...after many recommendations. Well, I called in to place an order and the gentleman was SO kind!!! I asked for his recommendation and he started asking ME questions.. do you prefer steamed? Do you prefer stirfry? Do you like lots of vegetables? Do you like spicy? He was amazing! He told us the order was gonna take 45 minutes and then he called me at 30 minutes to let me know it's ready! Just these "small "things are not small at all! Let's get to the food... It was perfect! I am a big lover of hot and sour soup... It was amazing! Spicy, but very delicate and you can just taste the quality! Everyone enjoyed their meal immensely and we even had it for breakfast this morning and probably will have for dinner tonight! Great job and thank you for the amazing service and the amazing food! I have been to this restaurant a couple of times. The food is excellent and the service is always great too.

We have been a loyal customer for several years. The wonton soup was hearty and delicious. The crispy wontons were light, crispy and tasty! We changed up our main plate periodically, and enjoyed them all. We also ordered more than we could eat and looked forward to eating the rest for lunch the next day And then it changed owners a couple of months ago. The first time we ordered from the new owners we immediately noticed a decline but we chalked it up to new owner issues and hoped things would return to previous quality. Tonight i ordered one of our favorites. The prices had gone up, but that is happening everywhere. Our wonton soup was weak and watery. It had less meat and the celery and cabbage overpowered the wantons. The crispy wantons tasted like the oil that they had been cooked in and our main dish tasted significantly different and not in a pleasant way. It will be quite a while before we return. OMG, what a difference new ownership can be. Lee and his mom made some of the best Chinese food in Mesa. Today I had a sample of the new food with Seafood Delight which I can honestly say was not a delight at all. I have never had krab that tasted light rolled up toilet paper and covered in sauce. Quite frankly, I have never had a completely seafood dish that was in brown sauce instead of white sauce. Two stars for the large glass of ice water and prompt refill. Tell the cook to cut way back on the salt. My wife and I both had upset stomachs on the way home. I thought this place was great! Ordered a Pong Wok Pork lunch combo for $6.50 (fried rice, crab puff, spring roll, hot and sour soup, and pork with vegetables). The entree was sweet, savory, and spicy all at once. The fried rice was pretty tasty with big pieces of rice and vegetables. I usually don't care much for fried rice from restaurants and get steamed rice instead but I'm glad I tried it! My order was ready on time and survived my trip back to work reasonably well despite the large amount of sauce and heaping serving inside. Not pictured are the crab puff, roll, or soup (such a great balance of spicy and sour) because I ate them before I realized I was definitely going to review them. We have been on the lookout for good egg foo young and, unfortunately, the search continues. We ordered delivery yesterday which consisted of 2 orders of Pork Egg Foo Young, 1 order of General Tao's Chicken, 1 order of pot stickers and 1 order of crab wontons. The pot stickers were the only thing I would classify as good. The Egg Foo Young patties were overcooked, small, and dry. The gravy (which was in separate containers) was OK, but definitely did not make up for the overcooked patties. The Tao's Chicken was very overcooked and chewy, and small portion. The crab wontons were more like just wontons were practically no filling. The white rice was OK. The fried was very dry and seemed like white rice with soy sauce added and then an attempt made at frying it. With delivery service and tip, the total came to $87.00. The best things I can say is that delivery was prompt (used the restaurant rather than another service), the driver was very nice and the food was warm. Unfortunately, I would not order from here again. read more

Now under new ownership and so far things are looking a bit better! Here are a few observations upon my initial visit during their Grand Opening. The inside looks the same however, the fried rice and noodles are prepared a bit differently and are a bit better tasting. The Egg Foo Young is different and is now edible, although it is still too much dough based for my liking, making it less egg omelet like, however there is still brown gravy to cover it, if you so desire. A couple of items are a bit spicier and more flavorful such as the Pepper Beef and Broccoli Beef as well as the Kung Pao Chicken. The overall food quality is a tick better then before although the Fried Chicken might have taken a step back - the appearance of a very pale coating and unidentifiable shapes kept me from even putting it on my plate, perhaps bravery will become me and I will indulge on a future trip. Also, the soup is lacking flavor, even with soy sauce and won ton chips added. Now making an odd appearance: Tamales. I inquired about their contents and was met with, "I'm not sure what meat is in them; chicken, I believe." Thus, I left them wrapped in cellophane on the buffet for someone else to discover. On the plus side, the fountain drinks are now less expensive. Overall, Tao Yuan has improved in more ways than not, albeit small improvements and probably not really noticeable to repeat diners unless you saw the grand opening banner hanging out front. The dining experience is now much quieter than before as there is less kitchen noise. Perhaps it is because mom and family are not in back cooking and talking among the dishwashing, radio playing and pot banging. Either way, low volume music playing in the dining area would benefit all if it were added, at least to mask the mastication and plate scraping of other diners and would make everyone feel a bit more comfortable while eating. The restaurant feels a bit cleaner but with less energy from the staff; it is as if things are on 3/4 time - no big rush to do things or a sense of urgency. The checkout is now next to the buffet and not next to the door. This makes a bit more sense, although, I did notice what seemed like one of the owners texting or playing games on their phone behind the register rather than tending to drink refills and removal of plates from the tables. What still remains is the nearly identical décor, painted windows, red buffet signs and the orange tabletops with wood grain booths and dark brown stacking chairs, all desperately crying out for a makeover. Therefore, my rating has not changed much, up a few stars in some areas, lowered in others . . . Either way, Tao Yuan is still a decent value for a smaller buffet at $6.15 for Lunch and $6.85 for Dinner. If you just want to put the feedbag on and get your buffet fix without battling the crowds at the larger 30+ entrée buffets, then this is your place. Here is hoping for additional improvements in food and a facelift or interior makeover in the days to come. I ordered delivery from Tao Yuan today for the first time and am very impressed! The delivery came in under an hour and everything we ordered was exceptionally good! I've ordered Chinese from a few local restaurants a bunch of times and the flavor of this food surpassed all of them. We tried: the orange chicken (amazing) the beef lo mein (also amazing) Gai Pang Beef (sooo good) The quality of the meat and quantity of the food was great and large. It wasn't bad and I didn't get sick which is a good start. It just wasn't any different than any of the other Chinese food places I've been to in the Valley. So now there is yet another new owner of this restaurant. I think they took over in Feb 2017. The owners name is Lee and his father is the chef. They totally redecorated and cleaned this restaurant. It's no longer a buffet. Their prices are cheap and the food is great. Very fresh and not too oily. We got the combination plates. Very good customer service. If you liked the original owners, you will love these people,cooking and prices. They give you enough food that you will most likely need to take some leftovers home. We are big eaters and we still bring alot of leftovers home. They also have delivery and take out. Try them out. It's great! read more
