Made my stop at Tap last night after a friend recommended it. It was worth the trip. As a bourbon and whiskey drinker I was impressed with the whiskey selections at the bar, was not expecting to see that in J-town. The drinks were prepared well they use some great ingredients in the cocktails. The food was also delicious. Order some bacon, hard to go wrong with bacon and it was very good. The Brussels were also a very tasty dish. The food portions are large, our eyes were definitely bigger than our stomachs. Overall great first trip and looking to comeback again. read more

What a disappointment. One of the worst meals we have had out. The appetizers were frozen institutional fare..disappointing The meal was lousy..burger just terrible. Burger bun stale Flat bread was well..bread with huge garlic cloves and some cheese. Pricey to boot! 1 drink, 1 beer, 2 appetizers, a burger and a flatbread close to 60! What? Food and beer are always good. It is our fifth time here, always with our kids. Today we were told by our waitress "no offense to you guys, but we are not kid-oriented" when we were informed that they were out of high chairs and only have two available total....meanwhile I can see three other parents holding their infants/toddlers in their arms. We previously came on weeknights so getting a high chair was not a problem. This is the exact type of place that young parents want to go to eat! My wife and I went for our first time and it was a great experience! Ambiance is terrific with low lighting/speakeasy feel and a long, impressive, concrete bar. It was busy 25 min wait @ 8:00 on a Saturday night) so we ate at the bar. The manhattans were well-crafted (we had seconds-I preferred the Cherry-Chocolate). The tomato bisque was rich and heavenly and the mulberry flatbread was tasty and perfect for two. Best feature , though, is the Staff. Bartender and Bar Manager were super-welcoming and attentive. We rarely choose sitting at the bar but this time was almost like dining with new friends. They were glad to tell us about the drinks/food and make suggestions. I've been here before, but not in the last several months. Last night had some ups and downs. When we got there, it was busy (as expected) Saturday night with limited covid seating. Hostess was super sweet and told us she'd just paged the people in front of us but they hadn't come. If they didn't come soon, we would get their table. They didn't show so we got a seat really quickly. It was actually a great corner table. Our waitress was very nice. We ordered one of the bacon appetizers to start. When we've gotten this before, it's always been really well cooked and brown/firm. SO when you took the bacon off of the stick it was pretty much crisp and stayed. This wasn't really cooked to our liking this time. Not being one to waste expensive bacon I ate it anyway. Husband also had a side salad. It was really good. The ranch here is fantastic. And the croutons are big, chunky, and yummy. It was a good looking salad with nice lettuce. We both got drinks. Him: Rum and coke. Me: Some fancy $11 whiskey a'la orange. It was more like a double shot glass than a drink. It was pretty though, and strong. I expected a bit more orange I think. For meals, I got the trainwreck. A gourmet grilled cheese with guoda, bacon, dijon. It was very good but again, the bacon wasn't quite there. I ate half. My fries were good. He got the filet and baked potato with garlic sugar snap peas. He ordered his filet medium. It came super well done. He told the waitress he hated to complain but his steak was way overdone. She was understanding and said she wouldn't eat that either. And took it right back. She came back and told her the manager said they were taking care of our next round. We just laughed and told her no more rounds for us as our limit was 2 with our drive home. She said no problem. The last round is on us! It wasn't necessary, so we were very appreciative! Steak came again and was perfect second time around Husband doesn't eat sugar snaps. SO I ate them. They were VERY good. I took the other half of my trainwreck home. I actually opened it and stuck it in the oven today for lunch. The bacon crisped up and it was even better today. SO all in all .. it was a good visit. While a few little things need tweaked- the staff has it together as far as customer service and we'll definitely go back because of that. This place is really lit. One of the best bangs for your buck in town I'd say. The beer selection is fire and the food is so on point. I got a burger and some bacon on a stick. I def would recommend this place to anyone who has the love for beer and good food. They make you feel nice and welcomed plus all the staff is very friendly. We've been here a half dozen times for drinks and eats and have had good meals each time. Tonight was not their night. For a group of four, it took probably 45 minutes for us to get our meals..... one salad maybe ten minutes longer than the rest of us. No explanation, no apology. Just "here is your last salad." Other negatives --grilled cheese with one side overdone, wings that were pink inside. The bartender did ask if we wanted to see a manager, but in all honesty, it would have been nice if one would have just come out as happens in some restaurants. Very nice operation and a top spot for eating. Had an amazing waiter named Corey who was super competent and knowledgeable. Beers were great and the various bacon and cheese sandwiches were off the chart. I had the bacon with grape jelly and jalapeño aioli and it was off the chart. Ordered 2 different bacon as appetizers as well as the pepperoni roll which is "gigantic" and they too were awesome. Fries are more than you can eat! This is a fun, comfortable place with a great beer selection. I love that they offer beer flights, since it's so hard to choose when there are so many good offerings. Be warned that the chef has a serious sweet tooth: anything in the menu that could easily be too sweet probably will be, from wings through flatbreads. Wings are crisp and perfectly fried, but you're out of luck if you'd like hot and savory; mango habanero is supposed to be the hot one, but it's mainly just sweet, not much spice, and the waitress warned us that the other sauces are sweet too. Still, the wings are good enough that I'd consider bringing my own sauce. My medium rare burger was not medium rare--there was no hint of pink at all, but it was juicy and flavorful, with a heavenly aioli sauce. I had high hopes for the Mulberry flatbread--orange ricotta, smoked bacon, fig, and balsamic--but it was more a dessert than a savory flatbread, with not enough bacon or smoke and too much sweet fig jam and overly sweet balsamic glaze. Maggianos offers a similar combination on a bruschetta, and it can be a wonderful savory if the balance is right. Also, the "flatbread" is more a rectangular pizza than an actual flatbread, but it was a tasty dough. On balance, this is definitely a place worth trying. We are sure to go back. read more

I previously highly reviewed this place and we were loyal customers for a long time. Last night we waited 2 hours for burgers and fries. No one ever plans to do that but we enjoyed cocktails and visited with friends. Time keeps ticking....kids are really tired & hungry...Excuses after excuses for our wait kept us strung along....then the food arrives! No lie RAW ass French fries and beyond BURNT burgers. Burger was never even flipped on the grill just left to charcoal on one side, literally a hockey puck. Assembled burger was then obviously left under heat lamp forever because bun CRUNCHED like day old toast when we took a bite. We were honestly blinded by what we "hoped" this business could become "when they work the kinks out"My previous review (1 yr ago) was 5 stars. We have finally seen the light. Will never come back. It's a gimmick and sadly we are so desperate for new, trendy places in this area we will cling to almost anything. Give it up folks. Hands down a great place drove half hour to eat here and it was worth the drive. The the food was amazing and the bacon is a must have. Very clean olean place and enjoyed the live music while we ate. Went in today to pick up a to go order and service was certainly as not up to par for how dead it was. The two girls never even acknowledged me and appeared to be clueless! I wanted to love this place.. I really did. Me and my husband went for lunch the other day and we were told to sit anywhere we liked, okay cool! We were asked 3 times if we wanted anything to drink but water.. we were not aware that typically people drink alcohol here and it was noon, Our bad. But in our defense if we didn't have such a rough first experience we would come back and drink probably often as the place has a great atmosphere. But I digress.. we ordered the pierogies for a appetizer.. IT TOOK 45 MINS TO GET THEM. We put our lunch order in before they even showed up on the table. When we finally got them they lacked flavor.. my husband is a chef and he was shocked at what we received.. 5 pierogies with onions and a line of sauce on top for $12.00. There was no salt or pepper to be found on or in them. Very bland. Still.. not the end of the world but for 45 mins for one easy appetizer.. I expected more. Nearly 30 more minutes go by before we get our lunches.. 30 minutes. For a sandwich, fries and "breakfast tacos" while we waited this hour and 15 minutes for lunch with only 2 other tables in the place we observed the kitchen staff casually talk with a waitress and a table who came in after us drink, eat and leave. My husbands bacon was burnt.. my sandwich was not at all what I expected and also on the burnt side... like i said in the beginning.. I wanted to love this place and to top it off our waiter didn't seem to care at all... Johnstown isnt the best on the dining front but this was disappointing. read more

We tried Tap 814 for the first time tonight and it was disappointing. The atmosphere is great and nice decor but the service was super slow and the food a let down. They are "known for the bacon" and that was undercooked and not that flavorful, the bacon app at Balance is WAY better. The burgers were all extremely salty and my kids and husband couldn't even finish them. They did love the fries though. My meal was ok but not something I would order again, but we probably won't be back anyway, which stinks bc I am tired of always going to the same places. I'd say it's a very cool place for apps and drinks but not a nice dinner. read more

We stopped by for dinner last night. The interior is small, but looked very nice and clean. We sat at the bar and the service was great. The bartenders were pretty knowledgeable about the beer selection. My issue was with the food. We ordered wings as an appetizer and they took an extremely long time to come out. Once they finally did, they were over cooked and very dry. The sauce they were tossed in was sweet and sticky, but not in a good way. After eating one wing, our entrees arrived. So we waited a good 20 mins for our wings and then all the food came at the same time. We said something to our bartender and they were gracious enough the take the wings off our bill. I had a flatbread with figs, bacon, and arugula as my entree, which looked and tasted like it had been under the heating lamp for a while. Clearly, there were some timing issues with the kitchen. On the plus side, the menu seems to offer a variety of food you don't see at other restaurants in Johsntown and I look forward to trying some of their different options. I will be back, just maybe after they've been open a little longer and have ironed out the wrinkles. read more

I was really excited to eat here... but honestly think it's a place to go only if you're interested in a drinks. I've gone twice... both times ended up going to more dependable place to eat( The Press, Nykos). The bar itself has a great atmosphere, bartender was really nice and knowledgeable. Hostess wasn't real pleasant. Never had the chance to eat any food. Hostess said it would be a 30 minute wait... after an hour and a few people being seated before us, we went somewhere else to eat. What a disappointment. Oh, and did I add it appeared that there was only like 6 tables for dining. Probably won't ever go back again. When I want to eat I want to eat... i honestly don't see this place sticking around if they don't make some changes to the dining experience. read more

Very impressed by the food in this establishment which is marketed more as a place to get a crafted cocktail or microbrew. I got the "Figgy Piggy" grilled cheese which was an excellent balance of sweet an savory. Also sampled a delicious flatbread with orange-zest infused ricotta, applewood smoked bacon, figs, arugula, and a balsamic glaze. But was most impressed with the Honey-Ranch wings. I almost ate all of my wife's order. Crispy, sweet, and perfectly cooked. Huge portions, reasonably priced, solid service. Only reason it was not a 5 Star was my son's burger was a little dry. We will be back to sample more of their very interesting menu, and plan to enjoy some of their candied bacon and creative libations. read more

Absolutely horrendous service and smug managers. Let me start this off by saying that I've worked multiple jobs in the food service industry throughout college. I've been a waiter, delivery boy, and even in the kitchen itself so I have the utmost sympathy for everyone in this industry. I understand that it can be overwhelming and just very stressful in general and I know that most people are trying their best.....I can't even imagine how it must be now with COVID. What I don't tolerate, however, is pure negligence. I went there recently and like a typical restaurant on a weekend they were busy. Unfortunately, moments after my order was placed, it was lost because the internet went down for a bit. What irritated me the most, though, was how the situation was handled. I sat at my table in plain sight for 30 minutes and not once did my waitress check up on me. We made eye contact several times and I motioned that I needed her but she flat out turned her head and kept attending to the larger tables (likely because she knew they meant bigger tips). It eventually got to the point wher people who arrived 15 minutes after me were getting their food yet mine was nowhere to be found. At this point, 40 minutes passed and I had to take matters into my own hands since my waitress continued to be negligent. It was only after going directly to another waiter did I learn that my order was lost. They also told me the manager himself would bring my order directly to me. Another 20 minutes pass and my waitress brings out my food, places it down, and runs off without even asking if I needed anything....despite it being painfully obvious that my beer and water glasses were both empty. At this point I was truly upset and had to flag down the bartender to get the manager. However, this would soon turn out to be just as pointless. When I explained my situation to him, he didn't seem to care and just stared at me with a dead expression, no sympathy whatsoever. And to top it off he acted as if this was a normal occurrence and like I had inconvenienced him and offered only a "sorry" and proceeded to leave. After I finished my meal my waitress passed my table numerous times, once not even acknowledging the obviously empty dishes on my table. At that pint I had enough and had to flag down another staff member who wasn't busy to give me my check. I apologize for the rambling and for coming off as negative but as a former food service employee it truly baffles me how incompetent and negligent staff can be. Tap 814 brings an atmosphere and drink/food selection to Johnstown that you typically would need to go to Pittsburgh to enjoy. This was our first time going there and we were not disappointed. The service was great and the food was phenomenal. It was nice to see something different as far as flavors and combos (something this town lacks). From the wings to the gourmet grilled cheeses there were so many delicious options. The atmosphere was great. The speakeasy theme is a fantastic idea and gives an old-time feel with a modern twist. Classy but relaxing! We will definitely be back. This is the sort of restaurant Johnstown needs! The staff is beyond professional and knowledgeable. They take excellent care of you. Water glasses are always full and they know the menu inside and out. It's such a breath of fresh air to have staff like this! Let's also add in that the drinks are brilliant. They are different and innovative utilizing local crafts and spirits. The food is not healthy by any stretch, but it's delicious, also different and creative. I don't get the service problems other than maybe it was growing pains at that time. My service was outstanding. It was fast, friendly and helpful. The food was good, I loved the bacon. The price point is fair. I had a hamburger and it was done just right and I loved the Fries. What can I say I love those greasy bar fries. I wasn't a big fan of the margarita but I can't complain my waitress described it 100%. She was spot on with how it was going to taste but I tried it anyways. It has a good beer selection and again I tried something new, Whitehorse wheat beer made in Berlin, Pa. Just loved it. The atmosphere is very nice and one of a kind in the area. I will note food service was fast. That was even with the manager coming out and telling us they were redoing the bacon because she wasn't happy with it. She even comped us for the bacon. To be honest she didn't have to because everything was still fast and good. So my waitress got an extra tip. Give it a shot I think you will enjoy it. read more
