Delicious food, charming interior, patio space, tasty sangria, it was a lovely dinner here. The only thing I didn't care for were the scallops, but the peas they were in were terrific, the potatoes delicious. They serve bread with dinner in a Spanish olive oil, paprika blend of spices that was out of this world. Our server was outstanding, and very attentive. I would definitely recommend coming here again.

Overall, an excellent experience and somewhere I would love to go back to with the knowledge I learned from my first experience in my pocket. The food overall was remarkable. We were a table of 4 and every single one of the 11 plates we tried were exquisite. We put in an order of about 3 plates at a time and when they were delivered to our table, we'd put in an order for another 3. This pace was perfect for us. This is a pretty small establishment. So plan to have your chair backed right up to the table behind you. If you prefer extra space, make a reservation and ask for a booth. Our waiter had no clue about food allergies. We had someone in our party with food allergies and I asked him to double check an item was dairy free and he adamantly claimed that it was. Upon probing further, the item in fact did contain butter, which the waiter didn't realize was dairy. In the future, I'd be more clear about what we could not eat and ask that he double check with the kitchen.

I drive by Tapas del Lago quite often and was very excited when it opened. Well it's been open a year! My companions had dined here before so I left the ordering up to them. I tried a glass of the tinto de verano, and it was sweet, fruity and sparkling. We had some bread with a wonderful flavorful oil, followed by patatas Bravas, a very light and tart apple salad, pork belly, gambas (just ok), dates. Our server said 1-2 dishes per person approximately; each tapas dish was enough to share. The almond tart was a little dry; it would have benefited from more sauce or an additional tart note. Reservations are not taken for parties of fewer than 6. We arrived at 6:30 and were able to get a table but the restaurant is small and was soon crowded and noisy with chatter. We had a fun, enjoyable evening and, enjoying the breeze from the open doorway and the tasty shared tapas and conversation, it certainly seemed like this was the best part of summer, with fall to come.

The Apple salad was our first dish, then followed the bacon wrapped dates, stuffed mushrooms, stuffed peppers, sirloin steaks, shrimp and scallops. I've been here three times since Tapas del Lago opened and I had a good experience 2/3 times. The first two times I came, my waiter was attentive and knowledgeable. He was so fun and would share all the recommendations with patience. This week when I went again, I got a different waiter which I was kind of disappointed about since I had the same waiter the first two times but I decided to give this waiter a chance since he seemed new. Well he definitely was new. I could tell he didn't have much experience and felt a bit rushed by him. There were many things wrong with the service but he was nice enough to give us shrimp on the house and was apologetic. If it were my first time last night I would have rated a three but i'm rating four stars since the food was still bomb and our waiter did make up for the issues. Everything here is so tasty. I also tried dessert for the first time this week (almond cake). It was good but a bit dry so I would recommend making it more moist. I love that there are cold and hot plate options and they have everything: chicken, steak, pork, and seafood. I've loved every dish I try here since they are full of flavor and high quality. The prices are also great too. I like the concept of it being family style and sharing with the table. They also provide bread which is always a plus. The inside is small and tables get filled up quick so be prepared to wait unless you are a party of 6 and can reserve. The smokiness of the food can be smelled from outside. I highly recommend coming here to eat as it's truly some of the best food i've had in the suburbs. I would just suggest that the managers make sure all waiters are thoroughly trained and fully attentive.

I went with my boyfriend last Sunday evening for dinner for the first time. Started with some sangria which was very light and refreshing. we got the bacon wrapped dates, the blackened cod the artichoke hearts warm with sauce and the seafood ceviche. My favorite was either the bacon wrapped dates or the fish, but everything was delicious. Definitely will be back again. They were busy and they were very kind and we didn't really have to wait very long for anything!!!!

A great visit. I ordered the TDL Signature Fino Martini to start, and it was incredible, I highly recommend it. We also ordered the shrimp, potatoes, and calamari. The calamari and shrimp were my favorite and these dishes had a lot of flavor. Overall, I enjoyed my time here and would come back

We've been anxious to try Tapas del Lago and finally had a group of 5 to try it out. Service was amazing and every dish was outstanding. We did 4 cold and 5 hot plus a carafe of wine and it was perfect! The salmon was delicious as was tye lamb and steak. Try the potatoes too! Nice spice and flavor. We will be back! read more

I was slightly disappointed with my overall experience here. Don't get me wrong, service was great! I've been to several other tapas restaurants in the city and the menu options are similar to these. Unfortunately for me, the items we ordered had too much sauce or seasonings. It overpowered the dish... I'm not a fan of mayo or anything creamy for that matter and I couldn't really eat two dishes we ordered because of it. :( read more

So this place is a bit pricey, but if you're in the mood for a fancier evening it's definitely worth it. My girlfriend and I went here for a ladies night, and had a fun time. The food was quite tasty and the drinks were yummy, the service was also was very kind. The restaurant was a bit on the snug side, so if you're looking for a quieter experience I'd imagine a weekday would be your best bet. Grateful to have a nice tapas place in the area! read more

Wow. I can't believe I hadn't been to this place before tonight after walking by it so many times in Highwood. This may be my new favorite tapas place. Everything was fresh and flavorful and the service was excellent. First, they brought out bread and a heavily seasoned olive oil dip (garlic, salt, paprika, yumminess!). The patatas bravas were flavorful and perfectly roasted. However, my favorite dish was the hot garlic shrimp. I would have just drank the sauce it was so good. Oh, and I'm glad we got the plantanas dessert. It was perfectly portioned sautéed bananas, a little bit of vanilla ice cream and the most ridiculous sea salted caramel sauce. Amazingly rich. We will be back to try out more of the menu. read more

Fun place, great soundtrack, good food, service excellent. To many kids before 7pm to enjoy as a date night. Take the fam before 7pm, go with adult friends or a date after 7pm. I don't like the lines. They don't serve liquor just wines and vermouth. read more

I really wanted to like this place. We love tapas and when we heard about the new restaurant we were excited. We used to go to tapas Valencia and cafe baba Reeba in the city. So we know good tapas. We started with the sangria. We split a pitcher. I'm not sure if they put any wine in it. Not so good Most of the tapas we had didn't have much flavor. Not much seasoning used. The shrimp tapas were extremely small. The goat cheese and bread was pretty good. Pretty pricey! Tapas at ba ba reeba are less expensive Overall just not worth price point. read more

I went last night for the first time. I read all the rave reviews. I agree with the friendliness of the staff. I so wanted to like this place but I didn't enjoy my food at all. I ordered octopus and filet pinchos. I order octopus everywhere I go and this octopus had the weirdest texture and flavor unlike any octopus I ever ate before. The pinchos were tiny dried out pieces of meat that I couldn't identify as filet whatsoever. In spite of other rave reviews I was extremely disappointed and probably wouldn't return. Sorry because I wanted to love it! read more

We had a group of 6 for the Valentine's Day 4 course prix fixe dinner. The menu was well planned by Chef Ben with top quality ingredients and perfect execution of each dish. Great fairly priced wine selection. Good beers, ciders and and incredible rosso vermouth with orange slice and olives, unique and excellent. Kudos to everyone there including the great waitstaff. Went with another couple last night. The food was great. The wine list is moderate but well curated. Our server Gio knew the menu well and was a most excellent host. Service was great which included, keeping the bread basket full, filling water glasses and changing plates. Ambiance, well the place is a bit noisy and the washrooms in the bar next store, less than ideal. (Though you can pop over and get a cocktail since TDL is only wine, Cider and Beer) We had (I'll skip the spanish names)..White Anchovies, Garlic Shrimp, Stuffed Mushrooms, Octopus, Meatballs, Bacon Wrapped Dates, Pork Belly, Potatoes in a spicy sauce. We skipped dessert (too full) .. Perhaps another visit will explore more of the cold side of the menu and dessert. I'd say the only item that didn't resonate with our group was the pork belly. While this is Tapas, be advised that these hot dishes are extremely rich and filling so go slow. read more

This is a wonderful restaurant. The service is friendly and efficient. The food is fantastic. If you are on the North Shore count yourself very lucky; the authenticity of the food here is hard to be matched in the Chicagoland area. Wish they had a full on liquor license. The alcohol is thin. Gave them 1 star down for that. If you don't care about the liquor it's a 5 for sure. read more

Paella came out with most rice burnt. When I tried to politely say something, I was told that's the way it was supposed to be. Bull --I had come back from Valencia 6 months prior, and had the real Paella. No way was it burnt like that. read more

I happened to be there the day of the infamous "Credit Card Crisis of Highwood," and judging by…read moresome of the reviews, you'd think Netflix was already filming the documentary. Here's what I actually saw. A simple credit card mix-up happened. Not identity theft. Not Ocean's Eleven. Just two nearly identical cards accidentally getting swapped. The owner immediately started working to figure it out, stayed calm, and everyone involved was trying to coordinate getting the card back as quickly as possible. What surprised me wasn't the mistake--it was the reaction. The owner, who is one of the nicest and most genuine people you'll ever meet, spent the entire time trying to solve someone else's problem while being treated as though he'd masterminded an international banking conspiracy. Meanwhile, several customers jumped in to help because that's the kind of community this place has. Instead of appreciating the effort, things escalated into unnecessary hostility. It honestly felt like watching someone order the "Full Karen Flight" instead of the beer flight. Mistakes happen. Character shows in how people respond to them. The owner even comped the entire tab for the affected party, which was far more generous than most businesses would have been. That's the kind of place Beermiscuous is. I've been coming here for years because the beer selection is phenomenal, the atmosphere is welcoming, and the owner genuinely cares about his customers. One unfortunate mix-up doesn't erase that--especially when everyone was bending over backwards to make it right. If your biggest takeaway from a place that went above and beyond to fix an honest mistake is still outrage, maybe the bitterest thing on the menu wasn't the IPA. David, I don't even know you but let's have a beer! I'll happily keep coming back.

The guy left with my card and the person working - who said he's actually the owner - didn't seem too fazed by it and really struggled to figure out what to do, even bringing other customers into it who were a bit over the top. Something like this can't happen every time, but for us when it happened it wasn't even that crowded. It was so weird, as was the reaction. Try the place at your own expense. Check out their to go stuff instead maybe.

A lounge with a wall of vinyl that you can select from and have the proprietor play for you is just a really cool idea and I'm amazed that more places don't offer this type of nostalgia. There is a tiny bar up at the front that the owner sells water, sodas (bottles and cans) and alcohol. There is a menu of drinks available that the owner can make for you or that he has available in bottles and cans. There is no food available, but you are allowed to bring in your own. There is a small private room to set up a table of food, place some tabletop games and listen to the music, host a meeting, have small gatherings or other type of event. They do offer different events in the main room and for the birthday I attended there; karaoke was then offered later that night. It seems there are some regulars who turn out for that so it's definitely a great neighborhood spot for regulars and newcomers alike. They also offer some board games and party games to make the your time there a lot more enjoyable with fun games, great music, and good vibes. I can't wait to visit again.

A great tapas place in the city of Highwood. Perfect place with amazing ambiance for early evening drinks and bites with friends. Usually it's a wait to get seated but the turnaround time is quick. We tried their red sangria which set the evening rolling for us. The octopus and mushrooms, recommended by our server, Giovanni , were blasting with flavors. We ordered all his suggestions and they were absolutely succulent. We finished our meal with coffee and banana dessert. We were very pleased by the service and the menu selection. Tapas heaven in Highwood! We were welcomed by Gio, who happened to be our server too, nailed it with his knowledge and great smile. Loved the gambas al ajillo, bacon-wrapped dates, and a uniquely delicious seafood Paella with shrimp, mussels, scallop and pieces of salmon. The chorizo and aioli added a layer of flavor too.
