Our waiter embodied the polished, attentive professionalism one expects to find in Paris or Vienna--knowledgeable, gracious, and ever present without being intrusive. The meal began with rustic Italian bread, crisp crust and a tender, airy center, paired with an exceptional olive oil infused with fresh herbs and garlic, the simplest things elevated to extraordinary. Our calamari appetizer was simply the best we've ever had. The squid was remarkably fresh, tender, with a feather-light, crisp batter and accompanied by a warm marinara that tasted as though it had been simmering all afternoon in an Italian kitchen. For entrée, my wife and I shared a flawlessly prepared filet mignon, a perfect mid-rare and finished with an indulgent Gorgonzola butter cream sauce. The accompanying crisp, frites were incredible dredged through that stunning gorgonzola sauce. Our guest chose the homemade lasagna, a dish that looked as though it had come directly from a Tuscan Nona's kitchen. His opinion carried particular weight--he is an international tour director who had just "eaten his way across Italy on lasagna." He declared this version equal to the best. Dessert was a shared tiramisu, dusted with aromatic espresso. It was light, perfectly balanced .. the finest tiramisu I have ever tasted. Yes, the final bill was on the high end for Monterey, but value is measured by the entire experience. A meal of this caliber would easily command twice the price in Nashville--assuming you could find a restaurant capable of delivering this level of authentic Italian cuisine and impeccable service. We were told over the phone that the ramen was gluten-free as long as it was made with the rice noodles. Based on that information, we drove over with our family, including a very hungry child. After we were seated, I told our waitress that I was gluten-free and that we had called ahead about the menu. Instead of letting us know right away that there was an issue, she went to speak with the manager, and we spent about 10 minutes looking over the menu and deciding what to order. When the manager finally came to our table, she told us they actually did not have any gluten-free options. I explained that we had specifically called ahead and were told the ramen was gluten-free with rice noodles. She clarified that only the plain rice noodles themselves were gluten-free--not the ramen or broth. That is very different from what we were told over the phone. I then asked whether I could order a poke bowl with white or brown rice. She said the rice was not gluten-free because it was prepared with sugar and vinegar. Since sugar and vinegar are typically gluten-free ingredients, I asked for clarification, but she simply repeated that she does not make any of the rice gluten-free and was unwilling to help identify anything on the menu that I could safely eat. I do appreciate that she refused to serve me something if she believed it wasn't safe. As someone with a gluten allergy, I'd much rather be told "no" than end up having an allergic reaction. However, the entire situation could have been avoided if we had been given accurate information over the phone or if we had been informed immediately after being seated instead of waiting while we looked through the menu. The biggest frustration was the wasted trip and wasted time. We drove over specifically because we were told there were gluten-free options, only to leave hungry with our family after sitting there with a hungry child.
