There are restaurants and then there are dining experiences. Sapori di Napoli unquestionably belongs in the latter category. We were welcomed into a space that perfectly balances rustic charm with understated elegance .. warm and intimate, yet refined. Our waiter embodied the polished, attentive professionalism one expects to find in Paris or Vienna--knowledgeable, gracious, and ever present without being intrusive. The meal began with rustic Italian bread, crisp crust and a tender, airy center, paired with an exceptional olive oil infused with fresh herbs and garlic, the simplest things elevated to extraordinary. Our calamari appetizer was simply the best we've ever had. The squid was remarkably fresh, tender, with a feather-light, crisp batter and accompanied by a warm marinara that tasted as though it had been simmering all afternoon in an Italian kitchen. For entrée, my wife and I shared a flawlessly prepared filet mignon, a perfect mid-rare and finished with an indulgent Gorgonzola butter cream sauce. The accompanying crisp, frites were incredible dredged through that stunning gorgonzola sauce. Our guest chose the homemade lasagna, a dish that looked as though it had come directly from a Tuscan Nona's kitchen. His opinion carried particular weight--he is an international tour director who had just "eaten his way across Italy on lasagna." He declared this version equal to the best. Dessert was a shared tiramisu, dusted with aromatic espresso. It was light, perfectly balanced .. the finest tiramisu I have ever tasted. Yes, the final bill was on the high end for Monterey, but value is measured by the entire experience. A meal of this caliber would easily command twice the price in Nashville--assuming you could find a restaurant capable of delivering this level of authentic Italian cuisine and impeccable service. Rating has moved from my original 4 stars to 5 stars. We sat at the bar as usual. The bread is served warm and crispy on the outside - so yummy. I ordered the Baccala and the cod was so delicate that it resembled a Chilean sea bass. The sauce was perfectly seasoned and the olives and capers gave it a nice touch of salt. Quaint restaurant in the heart of Monterey. I can't lie, it's very noisy as the acoustics could be improved upon, but that doesn't take away from the fabulous meals.Service is impeccable while still being personable. The menu has so many amazing selections. The wine list is extensive but if you bring a bottle for a special occasion that's not on their list they have a $25 corking fee. I walked in and was very impressed, appeared to have great ambiance as the reviews stated, this point I'm excited for my dinner. I left 23% tip. When I got home and opened the lid for my dinner I was shocked, presentation, it looked like it was ran over, the meat looked like Taco Bell processed meat, no flavor at all, salad had a hint of Cesar Dressing. After a day wandering around the area we stumbled upon this great Italian spot in the tiny town of Monterey. What a find. The host was friendly and conversational as we were seated and the server knew the menu and the specials. She checked on us frequently but unobtrusively; our glasses were never empty. The calamari was a perfect appetizer as was the premeal bread with dipping oil. The Ravioli was delicious and the pasta seemed very fresh. The Veal special rolled with ham, mozzarella and wilted spinach was exceptional. I also find the prices for many of these dishes a little too high...I know their food was freshly made but I felt that the eggplant parmigiana appetizer came out steaming hot as if they just cut a piece that was made much earlier and just microwaved it...plus no layers were seen...the ricotta, etc. Suggesting the chef may want to try n make Eggplant Rollatini instead? As far as "sweet tea" since it is a staple drink in Tn, they did not have any...again....so right there I was QUITE disappointed. And to top it off, I was looking SO forward to having a cup of coffee at the end of my meal with REAL HALF n HALF NOT little "coffee mate creamers" that would be served in some rinky-dink diner! It was embarrassing to see this given in such an "upscale, fancy" restaurant as such..."Coffee Mate" chemicals are SO UNHEALTHY for EVERYONE - please look at the ingredients. And Half n Half has such a natural and BETTER taste in coffee anyway. I did compare this restaurant to Forte's in Crossville, considering they have people waiting on line outside and also reservations are a must there! and at least they have sweet tea and REAL HALF n HALF for coffee. A lovely dinner to celebrate a birthday! We started out with the calamari which was tender and fried to perfection. We both tried a pasta dish. My husband had the pasta special which was the paperdelle - handmade with mussels, clams, and shrimp in a lovely pink sauce with mushrooms, onions, and green peas. I tried the spaghetti and meatballs which was also wonderful. The portions were generous and we had to take some home. Since we were celebrating, we had to try the tiramisu. Both were delicious. Our server, Emma, was quite nice, well informed and personable. The ambiance is okay. It's a small place with brick walls and tile floors making it a little loud for casual conversation. They don't take reservations for small parties, so we arrived early to ensure getting a seat. That didn't happen. It was crowded with people waiting outside and a fifty minute wait. We went to a restaurant next door and had a drink while waiting. They called us about an hour later. Arguably, the portions are too big, but when is that a problem? Service attentive and friendly. There are only two negatives. First they don't take reservations. One 'correction' from my original post regarding salad and bread......when I was in Italy for a couple years I don't ever remember receiving a salad and bread with dinner automatically.
