First day in our new office location - unpacking, cleaning & ready to take a break for a meal we turned to Yelp to find food. Decided to try Tapi for dinner and a drink to relieve a little moving stress. The restaurant is decorated in very bright, festive, and welcoming.    The menu is extensive with lots of choices and photos of food options.  It all sounded and looked delish.  The food arrived and looked just like the photos. We ordered queso for an appetizer (very good!).  My dad ordered beef fajitas and I ordered a chicken chimichanga. The food was good but seemed to lack some seasonings.  We added salt/pepper which improved it a bit though still lacking some spice.  The frozen cup was delight for a Corona Light, relieved a little moving stress.  Will definitely give it another shot. read more

I hate doing this for places that I've never had a problem with before but today was completely different, The service was terrible. The fact that me and my fiancé asked for just queso on our food and end up with the red sauce a the queso. Our dinner was completely ruined, like I said we've never had a problem with the place before till tonight, so I'm never going back. Loved the vibe and decor. We chose this spot over others in town as we were visiting because of the cheery exterior. The inside had even more flair. The staff were friendly but did seem a little out of sorts. It seemed like they were maybe cleaning up from hosting a large party or event so maybe we just didn't visit on a regular day.The food was good, I would maybe just order something other than the taco salad next time. We sat outside on patio and really enjoyed our visit for big lunch. Taquitos with chicken were good. Pollo Pobalno was also good. Low heat. Hammered chicken breast grilled with poblano and onions. Simple and good. Fajitas are really good. Seasoned, blackened and full flavor. Chimichanga was a hit. Big flavor and size covered in queso. We had Margaritas and the lime was best of our three. We got Lime, Strawberry and a top shelf Marg. It was a mango/orange mixer and was good, but not tart I was hoping for. read more

Meh. I have been there and the service was good, but this last time it was terrible. The server brought the wrong food for my husband, but we rolled with it. But she kept asking if we wanted more chips and we kept saying "yes, please," yet she kept forgetting. It wasn't particularly busy, but I chalked it up to there being not enough servers. The food was okay. Mine wasn't anything special. My husband's was okay despite not being what he ordered. My kids really liked theirs. The worst part was the trashy family standing out front having a screaming match in the parking lot, though. The mom was losing her cool and cussing at the adult daughter. Oh well. Dinner and a show, Hoosier style, I suppose. I probably would go back if I was really hungry, but it wouldn't be my first choice.​ read more

We should have turned around and left when we walked in and saw the manager/owner running plates with no mask on. They seated us, and by that I mean the manager pointed across the dining room at where we should sit. Our waiter was polite but seemed unaccustomed to his job. We ordered and our food took forty minutes to come out. My wife ordered shrimp cocktail. It was large and she enjoyed it. I ordered pollo poblano. It wasn't bad, but If you put an ingredient in the name of a dish you should put more than three pieces of said ingredient in the dish! There were three pieces of poblano pepper in the entire dish. The tortillas that came with it were hard. When our food arrived I had to ask for silverware. Twice. Y'all I am generally a very Easy customer to please, especially as it relates to Mexican food. Our family happened to drive by this place after a long day of hiking at Clifty Falls, and so glad we stopped! Everything tasted really fresh and was delicious! 3 of us shared a pitcher of lime margaritas, and they were honestly the best margarita I've ever had. My husband and I shared the chicken nachos, and they were much better than your regular nachos. Was I just starving after that long hike? Maybe. . I waited a few days to write this because I was so upset over how I was treated that I didn't want it to reflect . I used to go to this restaurant all the time but it's been 10 years so I decided to stop by while in town. Bad idea. They have Changed and not in a good way. Beer = good but that's pretty simple. Chips and salsa = OK. Salsa has always been thin so I knew what to expect. Chips are good though. Service = almost nonexistent after you get your food and now let's talk about the food ... Thankfully the beans and rice were good because I set an ate about half of those while hoping someone would come back by because the main course was disgusting . When no one came by for at least 15 minutes I just gave up I finally saw the waiter and flagged him and said I wanted my check and explain to him that my main course was just gross . And it was it was unflavored chicken in a soupy nasty mess . It was supposed to be chipotle chicken there was no flavor to this at all and it looked like someone had vomited on the plate . At that point I had drank half my beer and I had eaten about half of the rice and beans with my chips while I was waiting . I was not offered a discount I was not offered for my food to be remade I just basically had a check sit down at my table and the waiter took my plate and left . When I spoke to the manager while paying my check he was beyond rude and verbally yelled at me that I should have got up and went and found somebody if I didn't like my food . Now mind you I am not going to walk all the way back in the kitchen to find somebody and I never saw my waiter again after my food was set down . The manager legitimately yelled at me while I was trying to remain calm . So I paid the $16 for food that I barely ate which he said I ate over half of . I had two bites of that chicken it was disgusting and again I ate about half of the beans and rice while sitting there . It's not that I wanted a discount or free food someone could have remade my food perhaps? But there was absolutely no need for the manager to yell at me and treat me like I was stupid . 10 years ago this was a good restaurant went there and enjoyed it I will never go back again . Thankfully I have been told there are much better Mexican restaurants in town . But wow it's mind-blowing that the manager thought it would be okay to yell at me while I stood there . ​ read more

Lunch at Tapatio while on a day trip to Madison. Tapatio is hidden behind a McDonald's and sits next to a movie theater on Hwy 62. My wife had the tamale off the lunch menu ($6.19) which is served with rice and refried beans. I had the Chile Relleno off the lunch menu ($7.29) which also was served with rice and refried beans. Both meals were very good. My wife stated her tamale was one of the best she's had. The tamale was tender and stuffed with pork. It was also topped with ground beef. My Chile Relleno was a mild poblano Chile filled with cheese, battered and deep fried. The Chile was smothered in their queso. The queso was good and a little more spicy than I was expecting. I liked it. Both of us felt the refried beans were better than many we've had at comparable Mexican restaurants. They were smooth and creamy with a nice bean flavor. IMO this meal was above average and the lunch menu a great value. read more

Here's the deal, Madison is, how we say, limited in dining options for the most part. There's some great restaurants downtown but not too much up on top of the hill. Tapatio is one notable exception. I always judge Mexican restaurants on the chips and salsa. If those are good and fresh, the food is usually pretty good as well. Tapatio checks both those boxes, fresh crunchy chips and great salsa. Also, the queso dip is a must. That shit is like crack, for serious. I've only eaten there once but it was with a very large group, notoriously difficult for any restaurant to handle. It's safe to say we overwhelmed them. That being said, everyone got their orders (all correct) and it didn't actually take too long. The chips and salsa kept coming and the beer was cold and plentiful. It's safe to say I'll be back next time I'm in town. read more

The location is convenient if you want to have a couple of drinks and then walk over to the local theater to see a movie. I suggest you give it a try. read more

In my last two trips to this restaurant, the food has not been anything "amazing", but the after affects have been - it's an experience that won't let you forget it for days afterwards, no matter how much you may pray it does so. Great food, atmosphere, and staff. As a member of the military, it's good to see this location supports the hard working youth such as high school kids who are working hard for their earn. They support our military very well too, offering us a military discount. The real great quality about Tapatio? THE FOOD! My wife got the shrimp tacos and they were cooked to perfection. I got the Super Donkey, and I will say a damn good job the staff does to make your dining experience there, not only a pleasant one, but an outstanding one! In the past (couple of years ago) my family and I REALLY liked this place. However the place has steadily gone downhill. Tonight as we left we said "let's not go there again." As any Mexican place started with chips and salsa. Chips a bit flavorless, tiny bowls of salsa. I had the Chori Pollo. Taste was OK, felt like the portion size was a child's menu portion. Disappointing. My son had Poblano Quesadilla. He also said taste was OK (at best, he said - not really all that good), but it SOOO was not a quesadilla. It was just a large taco. He was disappointed as well. My wife ordered Nachos Fajitas Supreme. That dish was TRULY DISAPPOINTING, that I could tell just by looking. When I think nachos, I think nice crisp chips with some good toppings. There wasn't a thing on her plate that I would call a chip. Once you got under the toppings there was a SOUPY MESS with soggy things that may have at one time been chips. She said it taste about how it looked. Service wasn't great either. Food was fast enough - maybe if they had taken some time they could have gotten quesadilla and nachos right - but only time we saw server again after that was he brought bill, didn't ask how it was. Food was decent but service was terrible. From the time we walked in the door service was pitiful. The hostess threw menus on the table w/ out saying a word & walked away. Server had to be asked for refills & the tortilla chips we were given were burnt & we had to ask to get decent ones. Took forever to get our food. I ordered a large meal that was fairly expensive & came w/ 3 tiny tortilla shells. When I asked for a few more they charged me for them! The server never came back to ask about refills or if the food was okay. On top of it all the place was freezing cold. We had to eat w/ our coats on. We used to like going here but it'll be our last visit. Very poor experience- over priced, terrible service & only average food. read more
