This place has a nice outdoor patio setting but I'm giving it a one star because the owner was very rude to us. My friend and her 86yr old husband went to buy filipino food at the topping tree restaurant. My 86yr old friend then sat at one of taplands table while his wife was ordering/waiting for their food. I on the other hand ordered some panini at taplands. Then i sat at the table with my 86y friend waiting for my panini order. My friend got her filipino food and since it was a Wednesday, toppings tree was only a take out no dine in. But we decided to just eat in taplands table since I was already eating. In the middle of our dinner out of nowhere the owner came and with a loud voice told us we can't eat in their table. My 86y friend didn't know it was their table and he got offended by the owner's approach and raised his voice to the owner. The owner became even more rude and told us to leave and he said he can kick us out and tried to pick up the table in an attempt dump our food. My 86y friend got even angrier at the owner and told him he has a gun. He wasn't threatening him because he didn't have a gun he just thought maybe the owner will back off his high horse if he said that. His wife tried to calm him down and told him that saying he has a gun is not a joke and he shouldn't say it and he acknowledged he was wrong to say it. When he found out that table was taplands he tried to say sorry to the owner but the owner didn't seem to care what he said. The owner starts calling my 86yr friend an asshole and cussing him off in front of my 2yr old. He even called the police. So the police came. But all they did was search my 86yr friend if he really have gun and that was it. The police knew we were harmless individuals just trying to peacefully eat our food. I don't know why that owner was so irked by us. I was their customer too plus there were plenty of empty tables. That owner need some customer service manners. We know our 86yr old friend was wrong to raise his voice but he's an old man his patience is short plus it's not his fault because I told him to stay while his wife was ordering the Filipino food. The owner could have approach us nicely and politely from the start and my 86y friend would not have argue with him. He has no consideration to the elderly. By the way their panini was not that good. I don't know about their drinks. We were gonna try their drink after but since he was a jerk we didn't. Very very disappointed with the owner's manner. read more

With its relatively close proximity to SCU, I had low expectations for a friday night. Much to my delight, this was not the dreaded friday night frat party i had anticipated! I arrived around 7 PM and there was available seating inside and out (it was still nice end of Sept). We snagged a table and added some extra chairs since there were 6 of us. I really like the diversity of the beers and the fact that you can order in a smaller size than a pint. Helps when you need to drive home after. We also ordered some snacks like the pita and dips and charcuterie plate. Prices are extremely reasonable, I will go back in a heartbeat! PS the giants beat the dodgers 9-3 while i was here, so that's 2x the win points for Taplands ;) read more

This place was such a disappointment. We went last night around 7:30. I was excited to go because I live nearby and they have cool outdoor seating. My friend wanted to grab a bite and a drink here. We went and we waited a while to get seated even though there were open tables available because no employees spoke to us or acknowledged us, no big deal the hostess was on her break so I get it. Though I recommend being on your break in a place where you won't give evil eyes to customers, she was right in front of us having a beer and looking at us like "you can wait, I don't care lol". When we ordered one appetizer to start as we were still browsing the menu, the waiter was like "that's it?" To which we responded "for now we are still looking" He looked at us like we were crazy. I have never had an issue taking my time to decide at a restaurant... never. Usually they say of course I'll be back with that appetizer take your time. Okay so this isn't going great but it's fine whatever. The tall gentlemen who was wearing a black bandana as a mask who I assume was a food runner came by to drop off our appetizer. My friend said "hi thank you, I'd like to order more, could I order from you?" VERY kindly. Now most people would either say "no problem I will send your server over" or "yes I can put that in for you". He literally very aggressively said "NO" and walked away. We were literally laughing at how rude he was because it was so ridiculous. I've definitely had bad days before, but wow he could have very easily said "sorry I can let the server know" or at least said no in a less aggressive way. My friend started to give a drink order when our waiter came by and they did not have what we wanted. We then just decided to pay and leave. Everyone in my group was extremely uncomfortable and felt unwelcome. I run a food blog on Instagram and I visit a lot of spots in the Bay Area to make content for my page. There are SOOO many places with much better service and more options. You should go to one of those. I'm surprised at all the good reviews but maybe we came when the worst staff was working? You shouldn't have staff that hate their job that much. I work a 9-5 now but I worked in food service through college and I have never been so outwardly rude to a customer that was being totally nice and reasonable. All the outdoor dining experiences I've had for a long time have been really great with stellar service or AT LEAST decent service. This place has potential and I honestly thought I would really like it, I wanted to love it and post about it. Maybe I will give it another try if someone else wants to go but I'm definitely not making plans to return. I genuinely hope they make some changes and get better! You have a lot of potential guys! A co-worker found this place and a bunch of us decided to come here after work. It's fairly new. But seems like a chill place to hang out. We were able to snag the couch in the corner. They don't really have a Happy Hour but everything is pretty reasonable - not super pricey. They have about 15-20 beers on tap, I think. They let me try one or two before I ordered a whole pint. I ended up having a black current wheat beer and the citras gose. Both were a little bit fruity which is what I like. I think they rotate taps so they should have something new when you go. They also have a small menu of food. I was having dinner later so I didn't try any of the charcuterie plate and the grilled pita that my coworkers ordered. It looked pretty good - just some snacks while you're enjoying some beers. It's not too far from work or home so I could see coming back. read more

This is our go-to favorite place! Sometimes we come in just to get a 'Traditional' sandwich (and of course end up with a beer, as well) because they're so good! The rotating taps pretty much always have something for everybody's taste, although there's often a larger selection of IPA's than anything else. I've discovered some amazing beers that I wouldn't have gotten in the store. The staff is awesome and knowledgeable, they're always helping us try new things and find what we like. Love this new spot near SCU! Why wasn't this here when I was attending. Anyways I still live close enough and this is a great space to come out to. Located in a quieter part of Santa Clara, this bar has a really nice feel to it and offers some great beers and bites. For such a small place, they offer quite a bit of beers on tap. They seem to rotate out pretty frequently too which is great to try something new. As for the food, I tried the cheese plate that came with some meat, bread and mustard. It was the $12 one. For the price, I was really surprised at how much you got! Very generous portions. Overall, this place is fantastic. There's plenty of parking in the back. The place got pretty full on a Friday after work, but I think besides that it doesn't get too crowded. Can't wait to come back! read more

I really wanted to like this place. We came on Friday night after work and instantly liked the feel of the place. Easy street parking, outdoor seating, lots of craft beer choices, and a nice look. They had 3 paninis along with other snacks (olives, pita, cheese and meat plate). But out of the 3 choices they had on the menu they only had the ingredients for one. For 7 on a Friday night, that seems like poor planning. We didn't end up eating there because the spicy turkey was the only thing available and I can't do spicy things. Trying to order anything takes awhile. There were only 2 guys working and without a designated place to order you can be standing around until they notice you, one word of advice, be aggressive and noticeable! I waited in line for 10 minutes just to close out my tab. We aren't giving up on this place just yet, I'll update my review if anything changes. read more

Really loved the place. Very laid back atmosphere to chill out on a Friday night. Most often you will find ppl playing board games. We went late into the night so we could jus order beer. The place was filled around 9 pm and the only open spots were by the far end of the bar (though the place wasn't uncomfortably crowded ie when you're standing shoulder to shoulder w/ someone). This place is an awesome hidden gem. for those who don't live in the area, it's a smaller brewery that offers small plates, beers and N/A refreshments. They have multiple tvs for sports games viewing, plenty of tables in and outdoors and a couple couches inside for a more laid back scene. The staff is always super friendly with great recommendations. The beers and god specials change often so you can always expect something new and yummy. also, they are child and pet friendly. It doesn't have a "bar only" atmosphere. Families come in with babies/kids and pets r allowed on the patio. It's always a cool vibe. The food is awesome and beers are amazing! I stopped by Taplands after dinner with a group of friends one night. It can be intimidating for a group of girls walking in to a pub/bar but everyone there was so friendly! There were a few guys who looked like regulars or they worked there and they were very quick to give up their seats at the bar for us. They didn't pressure us in making a choice right away but helped us decide by asking what we like to drink. After seeing a table available outside we made our move. There aren't really any other places open in the area at night so you don't have to worry about being too loud. This is a great place if you're catching up with a few friends or just want to enjoy some good beer. I would definitely come again when I'm in the area. read more

Taplands is exactly the kind of bar I'd hope to own and become a regular if I still lived in the area. While not a large space, it provides adults a change of pace from the Hut, Seniore's, and Wicked Chicken if they want a craft beer, something to eat, and to catch local sports. Being able to support breweries from as close as Golden State Brewing up the street in Santa Clara to some of my other favorites from around the state (Knee Deep, North Coast, Modern Times) was great to have a local pub for non-undergrads. I will say that: - I love spicy, but the provolone and turkey sandwich would be too spicy for most people. - The price of most beers and non-charcuterie is cost prohibitive to spending the day there or having more than 1-2 drinks for people on a non tech salary. - Menu could serve to add a couple more low cost or different items or allow for outside delivery (e.g. nachos, poutine, etc.) - Most of the seating is not comfortable enough to spend more than an hour or so sitting - May want to offer a sampler menu to get greenhorns more knowledgeable on most offerings or the variety of ciders offered I know they're new and the owner is extremely knowledgeable and trying to do too much around the shop, but my server lost track of people's tabs, hard of hearing (poured me the wrong drink), and wasn't very knowledgeable on the offerings. Only tried one beer. Came early on a Friday evening it was packed, not enough seating indoors or outside. They allow single persons to show up and hold big tables/camp way ahead of their party when that table could have easily been turned in the meantime. My friend and I, desperate for a place to sit ventured to a nearby bench. About 20-30min later an employee came out and rudely told us we had 2 options, come inside or pour our drinks out, and that they had signs posted that alcohol was not allowed past that point. Well sir, those signs are not prominently placed and very easy to miss. And why would pouring our drinks out be an option?! Why not explain the issue and apologize for the lack of seating. Needless to say we opted for the 3 option... finish our drink and leave. On top of that, I agree with the other reviewer(s) that the menu is built for wine drinkers and not what I would want to go with my beer. read more
