We were passing through and decided to stop at this spot. I loved the tables and chairs. They're different and gives it a rustic look which is not typical of most Mexican restaurants I've been too. We got flautas and carne asada soft taco & chile relleno combo plate. Taco was delicious, fresh corn tortilla and big everything about it was delicious and chile relleno was one of the best I've ever had from a restaurant. Cheesy and the egg was fluffy had really great flavor. Chicken flautas were really good too. Beans were tasty Rice was on the blander side and a little sweet but not bad. i've had reason over the years, frankly quite more than enough of it all things considered, to know this little stop on a road from nowhere to somewhere only slightly better. translation of the name from spanish to english, as locals remind you when suggesting that "Los Baños" defines its best purpose as a "pit stop" along the way (outsiders are free to privately believe that's exactly the best purpose for the place). but to be fair to locals, who are primarily a true multicultural stew of mexican-, portugese-, basque- and increasingly fewer italian-americans, all adding their own touch of culture with mexican becoming the main note in this blood-line symphony, the literal meaning of baños does allow that this could simply be a nice place to stop on a hot and dusty day for a leisurely bath or similar ablution. aside from some unfortunate emotional entanglements while still "wet behind the ears" i have come to know this place today as a go-to spot to stop for a plate, actually bowl in this case, of my favorite of all mexican specialties: birria de chivo. not so common in larger cities this has been a bit of a staple in some of the smaller towns in the valley for years. more of a meat soup than a stew like menudo, there is nothing really in the dark red-brown broth than pieces of goat, usually with an annnoying but necessary bit of bone attached. when made well, it's a complex, rich and easily identifiable flavor, one you'd be wise not to develop a taste for. reason for this is that with its growing popularity goat is becoming scarce and a bit pricey. so the temptation is to substitute other meats for some or even all of the "chivo" in this birria concoction. there is another, more common dish often side by side on the steam table, birria de res. this is simply the meat soup birria format made with beef instead of goat. the two are unmistakably different, but it's not the point here to define how so. i leave that to you to root out a restaurant that serves the two genuine articles side by side, although the goat version is, like menudo, usually reserved for weekends. i only go into such details to try to gain your confidence that i know what i'm talking about with this dish, and its less interesting cousin made with beef. and it's irritating to see when a restaurant seems to be changing the recipe by comingling or replacing goat with beef in its birria de chivo. and this is made a bit easier by the fact that the goat soup broth is so distinctive, it's easy to masquerade simple tasting beef chunks (which are devoid of the small bones always found in chivo) ok ok ok i know i'm ranting here, obsessed really, but... so what. i'm not saying that's what's happened here. i like this place, a lot. great chile colorado, for ex. so maybe it just me, maybe things are catching up with me, maybe i don't really understand the cultural nuances even after living down there in the middle of it for years, maybe i had a cold that day. but just to ease my mind, not that i suggest anything for anyone else mind you, i won't be driving out of my way to stop at el rodeo for a bowl of birria, or much else, again anytime soon. read more

We were looking for a good lunch spot to break up the drive back to the Bay from Yosemite and were drawn to El Rodeo by the promise of delicious posole. I'm so surprised there are not more ratings for this place, this place is such a hidden gem! Ratings Breakdown: 2/2 Stars for Taste-- We were a party of 5 and got a little bit of everything to share. The posole was as delicious as advertised -- the generous pork chunks had the perfect ratio of fat to meat and just melted in the mouth. The pork was similarly fork tender in the chile verde and the sauce had a surprising amount of tartness to break up the heaviness of the meat flavor. My husband ordered the chimichanga with tripas and, man, we would definitely come back for more tripas. We also ordered the carne asada nachos to appease my mother and they were super generous with the toppings -- we had to use the complimentary chips to scoop up the extra. The favorite dish of the day was probably the enchilada mazatlan, which was bursting with succulent shrimp and smothered in crack sauce. Don't forget the delicious handmade corn tortillas they serve -- perfect to sop up all that saucy goodness. 1/1 Stars for Value -- Dishes ranged between $15-25, but serving sizes were huge. They don't skimp on the guac or meat. We ordered 5 dishes for 5 people and, including tax and tip, spent about $21pp. We were super stuffed and had to take leftovers home too. 1/1 Stars for Customer Service -- I'm not usually one to care about customer service, but the servers here really stand out with their friendliness and attentiveness. I think no less than 5 different servers rotated and checked in on us throughout the meal. They were super fast to bring us chip/water refills as well as extra plates and utensils when they found out we were sharing. We stop here occasionally while driving through town, partly because it's a short walk from a charging station for our PHEV. The restaurant has recently been redecorated and is very bright and clean. The chicken bowl (a new menu item) was nicely seasoned, and the shrimp and tortillas in the shrimp tacos tasted especially fresh, though a little sauce for a mild kick would be welcome (I added salsa). What a cute little restaurant! A nice open environment with a visible kitchen so you know they have nothing to hide. We were greeted right away. They have a lot to offer on the menu. When I told the server it was our first time there she told us about some of the most popular dishes. I took one of her recommendations and ordered the Cameron's Al mojo de ajo which is shrimp in garlic sauce. My man ordered the grilled filet of sole. Decent Mexican food on the way down to L.A., not to far of the of the freeway. Ordered the Carnitas Super Burrito (3 Stars) with no rice, no beans, add lettuce. Everything was fresh. They were light on the guacamole, crema, cheese and salsa. The carnitas was good, but nothing special. They didn't twice cook to get some caramelization with crispy edges. El Pastor Regular Tacos (4 Stars) with cheese. The white corn tortilla are made fresh, really good. The seasoning on the pork was really good. Great all around taco! Side of Rice (3 stars $4.99) the rice was ok, very light on the seasoning. The color was more yellow white from the Chicken both, rather than reddish from the Mexican rice seasonings. Had a mean hankering for some menudo or pozole and didn't wanna make it. So to Yelp I went! There were a few places but I liked the photos for this place. We have been here before but it was for tacos. Hence the reason I can give this place the 5 stars. They are seating inside but currently it's limited. Fortunately they've also set up tables and chairs outside. Since this place is nestled in a large shopping center there's plenty of parking. It's also easy to spot from Pacheco. So if you're just driving through it would be easy to stop in, eat and then be well on your way. Thankfully since I didn't know what I wanted I convinced my husband to get menudo and I'd get pozole. It comes with your choice of handmade corn or flour tortilla. Hellow? Both..lol! Didn't have to wait too long for our food. Our waiter was attentive and quick. Made sure we had enough napkins and refilled our chips and salsa promptly. Now to the caldos. My pozole came with huge chunks of soft fall apart pork. Just the right amount of hominy. It came with all the sides..the dried chilies..cabbage...limes...dried oregano. The broth for both was full of flavor and hit.the.spot. The menudo had a lot of beef tripe. We wanted to grab a snack so we ordered a quesadilla with homemade tortillas. I had it with chili verde and my friend had it with Lengua. They were both DELICIOUS and it only cost us $4.50 each. I added homemade hot sauce that added a wonderful kick! The chips, in my opinion, were not good. This was our first time at Rodeo and it was absolutely satisfying! We got the Rodeo Michelada and gosh, this is what you call a Michelada, they aren't playing around! My husband loved that they have Negra Modelo, and the Botana de Camarones was fire! Those shrimp are huge and the spice level was just right. The shrimp tacos are hella good, and two was enough for me (and yes, they are handmade tortillas). My grandpa has a caldo de camaron and it was a great size. Al pastor, Lengua, barbacoa. Hand made tortillas. We stopped here on the way home from a soccer tournament in Modesto. It was fantastic. It's more of a family sit-down place in a little strip mall right where the 165 meets the 33. It was busy. Nice ambiance. Smelled amazing inside. I asked a gentleman if I could order to go and I had a container of delicious tacos about five minutes later. They're a good size with generous portions of meat, cilantro and onions. I got regular tacos, but they also had a super taco option. If you're ordering to go, order an extra tortilla or chips, so that you can scoop up all of the delicious meat and juices that will inevitably fall out of these man-sized tacos. Don't tell Abuelita I like the chilaquiles better here. I'm consistently disappointed with restaurants that have table service. I avoid them. El Rodeo is different. The staff seem to enjoy having customers. They take your order and they talk to you. I actually recognize their staff now that I've been there several times. (And they recognize me?!) The staff are bilingual here - even the members who don't "look like" they speak Spanish. They code switch with the younger and older members of our family. They even laugh at Grandpa's jokes. Talk about making your customers feel at ease. Which brings me to the chilaquiles: Abuelita stopped cooking these for us because her hands got stiff. I ordered them at El Rodeo one Sunday morning. (That's when Abuelita used to make them). I was hoping for something reminiscent of her warm kitchen. What I got was a step above: crispy hot tortilla pieces beautifully seasoned with a red or green chile sauce and cheese, served with rice and mashed beans. You can get red or green chilaquiles depending on how your Abuelita used to make them. What does our Abuelita eat at El Rodeo? What was never appreciated by the rest of the family: menudo served with hand made tortillas. She highly recommends it. read more

After a day at the los Banos rez a group Of us were craving some Mexican food. Our normal staple after a day in the sun. The setup/entrance is a bit odd. You walk in and around to meet the hostess at behind the counter. We decided to eat at the restaurant. First impression was - wow these seats look cool with the huge round design but boy are they uncomfortable. Noticeably uncomfortable. Service was fast and attentive. Salsa lacked and tasted like store bought cheap salsa. I asked for a spicy salsa - they brought out a thin red salsa that was much better and spicer. Clearly an upgrade. I ordered the cam.ala Diabla. My friends all ordered the Posole. I was underwhelmed by the quality. Shrimp was a bit over cooked and rubbery but the sauce was good. My friends loved the posole broth but it lacked on meat and had 3x the amount of corn. I also ordered a michalada - this was by far the best part of the meal. Good mix, wasn't to "iced down" so the large glass was a full drink. Good flavor with rich lingering flavor. (The shrimp on the glass seemed to have seen better days. Overall a good meal but I'll try another taqueria next trip. read more

The Molcajete is spicy while creamy & worth the high price. The added octopus is tender & not the dreaded rubbery density. The Chimichanga are crisp but not greasy. Came in with another party for a casual business meeting on a Sunday afternoon and it was perfect for the occasion .( this was a choice from a Merced local , we traveled from watsonville ) The restaurant was nicely air conditioned and clean . The last time I came in was years ago , I assume it's under different ownership , well anyways it's a completely different restaurant from what I remember .
