The grease from the meat soaks into the tortilla and makes the tortilla disintegrate like a wet tissue in a toddler's pocket--soggy, mysterious, and full of questionable substances. The boyfriend and I were headed home from an eventful weekend in the valley, so we passed through Los Banos and felt like having more tacos (we had tacos all weekend. -- Haha!). He has been to El Grullense in the past and said they have remained consistent over the last couple of decades with their tacos and burritos. My curious self just had to give it a shot. When you first walk in, it's very clear that this joint is a mom and pop's hole-in-the-wall type of place. Nothing fancy but all things that can feel like home. The menu is straightforward and the prices are not commercialized but rather reasonable. We ordered a few tacos and a burrito to share. The carne asada meat was well seasoned and had great flavor. The homemade salsa had a nice kick but wasn't overpowering to the cilantro and onion toppings. We throughly enjoyed every single bite. Definitely a stop worth making when you're in LB. I found this small little hole in the wall restaurant as we were driving through Los Banos there's a flyer that said taco Tuesday so we thought we'd go in and try their tacos and may I say they fresh waters are sooo good I tried two Carne Asada two Al pastor two carnitas delicious and fresh Thiers. I ordered 4 tacos asada with everything and sope. I asked for extra jalapeños and the red salsa. The cook laughed and said something under his breath about me being white just because I wasn't speaking Spanish or miss pronounce my words. FYI this was all in Spanish between the cook and the girl who was taking my order. The girl smirked and looked down while the cook was laughing with a huge smile. I hardly even come to this place and the only reason I came cuz family wanted the tacos. I felt unwelcome and treated unfair. The next people in line spoke English too and the had no issue. Maybe it's because I have orange hair who knows. I world not even recommend coming back just based on the service and the order was incorrect. They gave me all green salsa that's not even hot even on my tacos after I told her on the side. The extra chili was a joke it was only 3 jalapeños which usually they give a small container and I paid extra for this! Got home without checking my bag before leaving. Yes I know my mistake but like I said I hardly come and when I do I never hard this issue. My partner for white hair in his tacos which made me even more not wanting to eat the food. I live across town from this location and I didn't want to drive back to fix just to get treated horrible again. If you plan on getting sick, this is the spot to go! Stomach pains from the menudo and I feel like I'm fighting for my life. This what $20 will get you, SICK! They definitely need a health inspector to check them out. Not sure what is going on in that restaurant but it shouldn't be up and running getting everyone sick after eating their food. Came here today with my aunt and cousin to try it out. One of the only Mexican joints open in this town on New Year's Day. It had good reviews. We called and had to go through three people to find someone that understood English to confirm they were indeed open. You order the food before you sit down and they call your number. The food was actually pretty good. The only thing I wouldn't recommend was the ceviche de camaron. Didn't taste fresh. The tacos were yummy. The tripa taste fresh and the carne Asada was juicy. The quesadillas are good, just the right amount of meat and texture. My cousin and aunt enjoyed this place so we'll definitely be coming back to try it out again. We order two sopas to go so I can't wait to try them out. They don't have a stand with lemons or limes/ salsa so you have to ask for extras but the service was very very fast which we liked. So update I originally gave this place 4 stars because my husband loved it so much, wasn't until my daughter I just woke up now at 1am puking our brains out. Los Banos is not usually a name that would bring visions of good food. I've driven by this city many time over the decades, this time I just happened to be hungry and on Yelp at the same time as we were approaching the city limits off Hwy 5 and bam a number of restaurant popped up on Yelp. Los Banos is not far off the freeway and looked like it had a number of real restaurants - not just truck stops. So we thought why not? We placed an order for a whole lotta food, from tacos to sopes to menudo to horchata; the price was cheap and we were hungry. The food came in no time. The problem was they gave it to the wrong folks. I was able to intercept my bowl of menudo because the mom at the other table had this "WTH, I didn't order this" look on her face. However my tacos were not so lucky. They had started chomping down on my lengua tacos - "yes, lady those are my lengua taco! Hey, you guys don't look so good. Never had tongue before?" Haha Haha! It was all I could do from busting a gut all the way back to my table. I looked over to one of the workers and I swear she mouthed the work "gringo"! Ok maybe not. That was the highlight of that road trip. It certainly wasn't the food. Everything was just ok. My menudo had plenty of "stuff" but it lack any real flavor and the soup was just too thick. Next time? I am so kicking myself at the moment because #1 I did not take a picture (what horrible Yelp etiquette right?!?!) and #2 the name of the chavela they have on menu has completely escaped my memory, which is what prompted my 5 star review in the first place! So my husband and I decided to try this place after passing it a few times AND we noticed they also have a couple lunch trucks, figured if business is that good they must have some yummy vittles. So we walked in and there were a few tables taken but my husband and my eye were caught by a large chavela sitting on a table that had shrimp on the rim of the glass as well as laid at the base of the glass. This thing comes served on a plate because they accessorize your glass of delicious coldness with grilled shrimp, veggies and drizzled with hot sauce. SCORE!!!! I've never had a chavela with grilled shrimp before and it was like 10 of those bad boys on there, head on and all! Being asian you know the appreciation I had for the place because they keep the head on; and if you don't know the importance of the head you better ask somebody! So we decide to also order a couple carne asada sopes. Boy when that beer came to the table it was as if the heavens sang and a light shone down from above at us...lol! It definitely hit the spot and the icing on the cake to one helluva work week. It also made dealing with our kids a little easier too I must admit..hahahahaha! That shrimp tho...wow...I even gave my husband my sopes just so I could finish off the shrimp...hahahahahahahaha! The place is clean, the ladies behind the counter were pleasant and fast. On our way to the Bay Area we stopped to eat at El Grullense in Los Banos CA. We have passed by this restaurant for years. It is a very busy place. We both ordered burritos. My husband ordered a tripas burrito which he said was good but it had too much rice. I ordered a chicken burrito. It was extremely salty and had too much rice. Not enough beans or chicken! I did like their pickled carrots. El Grullense is a family restaurant. I was disappointed with their food. Make sure you tell them to take it easy with the rice. read more

You dont come to Los Banos and expect to find great service and delicious authentic Mexican food, but this place had both! Giving it a 4.5 star for being an super friendly awesome Mexican joint with super yummy tacos and etc! We had: Carne Asada quesadilla: crispy outside with tender Asada meat and cheese on the inside. Sprinkled with a generous portion of of lettuce, salsa, and sour cream on top. Asada tacos: perfectly tender meat with two types of salsas and cilantro/onion mix Tongue tacos: super soft and moist (a new way to describe tongue, I guess) pieces of tongue just melt in your mouth! For $1.30 each, you cannot go wrong! Manudo: despite readying the not so great reviews on yelp I still decided to give it a try. The soup was on the thick side and the pieces were chopped small, a little overbooked in my opinion. The broth wasn't bad, but it wasn't Omg either. Thought I was missing something but I couldn't figure out what... (wasn't worth my $7) Overall a great tacos with very well seasoned and cooked meat at an affordable price. Next time I'm in town, I'll try a tongue borrito! MENUDO: My menudo had a horrid smell like laundry soap, the pork meat was extremely slimy. It had no flavor what so ever and the side Condiments were ginormous pieces of onion. It had almost no hominy what so ever especially with me asking for extra I was given the opposite. When I asked for extra hominy the an older woman was rude and dumped it out and reserved it giving me all meat. CHILE VERDE BURRITO : The burrito had nothing but the taste of bay leaves and nothing else. It was extremely dry with no sauce and the pork meat was very dark colored almost black. I'm very very much not looking forward to this afternoon after my body has digested the burrito. ASADA BURRITO : My wife's burrito I asked for it to have everything just no salsa. I guess that mea s no nothing. It was made with nothing at all and was just meat,rice and tons of beans. She said it had no flavor at all and was really greasy meat. She didn't finish even half of her burrito. I can say as I sit writing this am starting to have stomach pains from my food. Drove through after a HOT weekend at Millerton Lake in Fresno. My GF was craving for Mexican food, and we ended up here. The layout of the restaurant was similar to that of Taco Bell (TB). Had plenty of windows, so good natural lighting, but the furniture was like sitting at TB. Uncomfortable. I ordered 2 twos, which were $5. Who the hell pays for 2 tacos for $5, especially in Los Banos. Comma guy! I was expecting at least $2 per taco. The meat was a little tough and chewy on the chicken, which means the chicken was either old or overcooked. More than likely, they were old. I don't know if you can go wrong with tacos, since it is very basic with the layout. The hardest part to make on the taco is cooking and seasoning the protein. Outrageous. Was going through Los Banos around 9pm at night on our way home to San Jose and stopped here to eat. I ordered chili verde and hubby ordered a lengua burrito. Food was given to us on paper plates with the 3 sections on the plate!! No matter where I've eaten they always gave us our food on actual plates when eating in. Portions were very small and the chili verde was not how it should be made. Looks like they cooked the cheapest pork and added some juice to it, it sure wasn't chili Verde sauce. It was not good!!! The rice was not favorable and was cold along with the teaspoon of beans they gave me. Hubby's burrito fell apart after the 3rd bite from it having too much juice in it!! Was a waste of $22!!! El Grullense is my "go to" place when I need something fast and tasty. The Carne Asada burrito con todo is my fav. I order extra salsa verde and a jalapeño.
