I really like tongue. Wait, that didn't sound right. I really like to eat beef tongue. Wait, that sounded worse. Tongue is what I crave. Oh, skip it. I stopped by this taqueria in Richmond because they're one of the few who explicitly sell lengua tacos. FYI that's tongue. I could get two on corn tortillas with onions and salsa for $7 (Photo 6). I got another pair of tacos with Carne Asada for Jamie W (Photo 7). He's just not into tongue. No, we don't need an intimacy therapist. Mind your own business anyway. Both sets of tacos were pretty tasty, nothing that exceptional but satisfying nonetheless, including the tongue which I wished they didn't chop up. Regardless, where things went kinda south was when I ordered the $12.95 Breakfast Torta which I had a hankering for despite the time of the day. I was fully expecting a fried egg and refried beans in between slices of grilled Mexican bread. What I got and didn't realize until I got home was a refried bean burrito (Photo 5). WTF. I would've been thrilled if I was stoned and was riding on a psychedelic high. Unfortunately I wasn't, so we just wolfed it begrudgingly. I'd still come back for the tongue. Did I mention that I really like tongue? FOOD - 3 stars...the tacos were good but what the hell happened to my torta? Background: I grew up on the Texas-Mexico border and have really high standards for Mexican and Tex-Mex cuisine. I only eat takeout/delivery from this restaurant, but do so regularly. The shredded chicken tacos are some of my favorite tacos in the area. There have been some disappointing changes recently (more below...), but even with changes this place is super legit. The only disappointing thing I've ever had at La Estrella is the Chori-Queso. It's truly terrible and way too expensive, and I highly recommend skipping it. The shredded chicken (pollo guisado) is flavorful, chunky, and perfectly complimented by the generous onion and cilantro -- both of which are in a true fine chop, making it easier to eat them in the taco. The refried beans are also some of the best around. I am disappointed, though, that the tacos went from normal corn size to tiny street size, making them pretty expensive for what they are. The chicken is less saucy now too, thus less authentic. This shifts the shredded chicken tacos from epic down to excellent. Still, Taqueria La Estrella is awesome. read more

Not too big, which some might not understand as a complaint, but the ratio was excellent. I gobbled it up. My bro brought me a few burritos and steak fries from here before since he comes here so often(his gf works nearby) and I didnt think much of it. Not in a bad way but decent food that was consistent and not lacking in any departments.. Today I was hanging with my bro and we happened to come grab food here. Finally I can put a face to the place. Firstly parking can be difficult as it's on 23rd street which is a main street in Richmond, and it's a 1 way street here. We lucked out today and walked inside, pretty clean and well decorated. Authentic Mexican as it gets from the food to the workers and even down to the patrons. After seeing the menu I decided to really test their skill by getting their sopes and a taco. Not everybody makes sopes the right way. I personally prefer light, soft and fluffy sope base but many places have the dry, crispy dark sopes base. This business actually has it somewhere in between but more so crunchy yet I didnt have a bite that I didn't agree with. The al pastor taco wasn't something I'd mention in my top 5 but it still holds its own amongst competitors. Pricing was adequate, maybe even cheap compared to some places. I only saw 1 worker who took our order and brought it out in a realistic wait time duration so as far as customer service I can only judge by him, which was A1. Glad they survived this far in the pandemic era and hope to have them around for a long time. Definitely in my rotation as I'll try more less conventional items on the menu. read more

Service seemed better than I expected. Ambiance was ok. I appreciated the super super duper clean bathroom. The food -- eh -- I hit a veggie burrito and I've definitely had much better. But it wasn't bad. Missing enough beans and other fillings, but the grilled veggies were done right. The burrito wasn't excessively salty which is far too common. I felt like the ingredients were fresh and healthy and it tasted okay. My friend got a chicken salad dish. I sampled it and it tasted good. It looked healthy and fresh. -- The disappointments were the drinks. Horrible totally embarrassing aguas frescas. The wurst I ever had in my life! Totally like they dropped several Cool Aid packets in water in my cup and threw some weird looking fake fruit on top. HORRIBLE and embarrassing that any taqueria would serve this junk drink. Also the chips and salsas were poor quality. My friend and I were served about ten (10) chips spread out across a large basket. We looked at each other and wondered if they were running low on chips and needed to serve us a tiny quantity to save some for the rest of the night. It was laughable what they brought to our table. The salsas were very watered down and flavorless. Nearly the worst I ever had. Not even worth eating. The funniest part was as we were mid-meal, the server brought us three more filled little salsa plastic containers with more salsa. But we didn't have any chips for all that salsa. And it was bad salsa and we clearly weren't eating what salsa they initially gave us. We thought they were trying to get rid of it for some reason. It certainly would never spoil because it's not fresh -- just from a big bucket of I don't know what they make this stuff from. Maybe they wanted to appear generous giving us the cheap watery green and red stuff that I don't even know why I called it salsa above. It's definitely not that. Anyways, I digress. Taqueria La Estrella besides to offer great food, they offer great customer service, and they are very nice! We have been trying different plates, and they all have been so delicious, some our favorites are the tortas which bread is toasted to perfection; the sopes are also great, just like mulitas, quesadillas, tacos, and their horchata is one of the best agua fresca we have tried around us. Their salsas have also the extra kick, and we love their desserts: Tres Leches cake is exceptional delicious, and their Nutella cheesecake is just scrumptious! 3.5 stars for me. The menu shown online does not reflect accurate prices. Tacos are $2.75 and burritos are $9.25. The carnitas was a little on the salty side, but it was still pretty good. They do not have black beans. Both the mild and the hot salsa are good. We ate in and got a small bowl of chips, that added a nice crunch to the meal. If you do not like spicy, make sure you order your tacos without salsa. It was not flaming hot, but for people who have a lower tolerance, it might be too hot for you. The tacos were a good size as was the burrito. I came here b/c I was sort of in the area. I'm not sure I would go out of my way to come back, but I wasn't disappointing in the food. read more

I was excited last year in Spring when attending the ribbon cutting of this Taqueria. Meeting the very personable and sweet, Karina and her friendly brother and Chef was great. I asked Karina to give me a sample of her red and green sauces, asked her if the Chips were not oil fried. Sat down with a cold Corona and looking around the colorful, decorated culturally rich artsy stuff and even encouraging to mingle, talk with family and friends instead of staring at another TV while dining, I find this personable place to finally replace my downtown El Nopal (which closed after the pandemic) for my weekly Mexican Food appetite. First time, I tried their 2 Tacos with extra cilantro, onion and jalapeños. Karina gave me her special hot sauce, realizing I can eat spicy. On my return visit 2 weeks later, I ate a tasty, crunchy Casedilla with hot sauce. After a month or so, I had a chance to taste their Tamales and it was very good. Overall, affordable price, great ambience, quiet but good service. Can't understand why most people chose the drive through when you can sit for a few minutes and enjoy their food relaxed. Since last May, I make my monthly stop with a couple of friends for a beer, tasting their Negra Modelo or Tacate or a cold Corona with Lime! I sincerely recommend Taqueria el Estrella to everyone who love authentic Mexican Food. read more

I found them through Uber Eats and am so glad I did. It was a pretty lazy Saturday and looking at their online photos and reviews was enough to convince me to give it a shot. I ordered the California Burrito, salsa and chips, and a horchata. Delivery guy was nice and funny, my apartment complex is huge so everyone gets lost finding my unit. This guy did not give up, thanks Luis! Back to the foods, omg I love horchatas I could drink pitchers every day. This one didn't disappoint either with the perfect amount of sweetness and cinnamon. Definitely, this business knows how to make em. So happy I've learned about the California burrito in California. Each variation seems to get better than the last. This burrito is so so good, I'm impressed. Huge portion size so it's good for a lunch, dinner, and maybe another snack. Everything is compact and balanced so the flavors are even, if that makes sense. You get a bite of everything delicious each time. You'll only be disappointed when you eat it all. Salsa and chips are yummy too. Just the right crunchiness in the chips. Salsa's good, but I like mine a bit more spicy. Probably would like eating this more sitting down at the restaurant but it's only a dollar so not a bad buy. On an evening like any other, an age old question was posed yet again: what's for dinner? The girlfriend's 1st impulse was to go out for Mexican. I was totally OK with this, but wanted to go someplace new. We both knew there had to be good Mexican food in Richmond & a Yelp search produced Taqueria La Estrella. Taqueria La Estrella is a tiny shop that we almost drove right by, even though we knew the address & had it loaded up on GPS. To the side, however, is a giant parking lot with more than plenty of spaces where they also park their taco truck. Upon walking in, it was confirmed. Yup, it's a hole-in-the-wall. We went to the counter toward the back & ordered from the picture menu. I got the #21 Crispy Tacos (3) & the girlfriend got the #18 Sopes (3). We also both got Horchata. The grand total was fairly cheap & we didn't wait long for our food. My Crispy Tacos looked & tasted magnificent. I told as much to the girlfriend & she mumbled some kind of muffled concurrence while munching away on her Sopes. The Horchata was a sweet, creamy delicious treat. Taqueria La Estrella is a little hole-in-the-wall in Richmond serving up tasty tacos & yummy Mexican food. It is Richmond. So walking down the street here won't have the same "ambiance" as walking down a random street in Sausalito, but sometimes a really, really good taco is worth going just about anywhere for. read more

Tried this place out on a whim; craving cheap Mex food, was in the area. Service was incredibly friendly; menu offering rather large (although much bigger on the weekends as the restaurant is open too). Lots of vegetarian options including a veggie taco (minimum order, 2 tacos); horchata for $1.50; "authentic" sides like grilled green onions and peppers. The food was a bit over-salted, and the chips were corn rounds from a bag, but for the price (1 carnitas burrito, 1 order chips and salsa, grilled onions on the side, 1 horchata for under 10 bucks) it's worth it. Small seating area right outside. I also found it amusing that this taco truck was empty on a Monday night, but the Taco Bell and McD's right next door had cars lining up out the street for the drive through. read more

It was impressive enough that I spent the time to find it myself later on. This place is on 23rd in richmond, I never been here in particular, but I've been in the neighborhood and competition for mexican food is high. It takes a lot to stick out and Taqueria La Estrella does indeed stick out. the burritos are rolled tight and don't fall apart. the price is absolutely reasonable for the quality. It isn't the cheapest meal in the neighborhood, but it is definitely good enough that this detail should not deter you from trying it out. I wonder if they have their own delivery service. read more
