I ordered barbacoa tacos... they were good, but pretty typical. No frills. My wife ordered enchiladas verde and the sauce was way too hot (spicey) for her... and honestly even for me. So I ordered menudo and some baleadas first and for most the menudo was not cooked it was so hard I could not even bite it or chew it. The flavor broth was good but the pieces were so big and not done! Now the worst part is they offer baleadas and it was literally a flour tortilla not cooked with cream and hard ass pinto beans in it. Call that a bean and cheese quesadilla cuz it was not a baleada. I was so upset because I paid 10.00 for it and they were small and bogus a disgrace to Honduran food. I got excited when I drove up to this place as I seen several Mexicans pulling up and going through a door. I thought it was this place and was glad to see people liked it. Unfortunately, it was the much more popular Mexican convenience store. The taqueria had no one in it other than the quiet workers. And yes, as one Yelper noted, the door was dirty as hell. I ordered a carne asada burrito, my wife ordered pollo verde enchiladas, and my daughter ordered an asada and pollo taco. When the man at the register took our order, he left without saying a word to go prepare our food. So we just awkwardly found a table and sat down. I don't mind a dive with meh service if the food and prices are good. My burrito wasn't very good. The tortilla to filling ratio was way off, and there was super chewy cartilage scattered throughout the burrito. My wife's enchiladas were better, but her beans and rice weren't good. My daughters tacos were the best of all ours, pretty good. Like I said, if the food was good, I could get past the restaurant being a huge dive and the service being off, but it wasn't very good. Found this place on yelp and thought I'd grab a few tacos on the way home. Stood at the counter for a few minutes before anyone came to take my order, then they walked away to help another customer while I was in the middle of placing my order... never came back. A few minutes later a takeout box appeared with the two taco especials I'd managed to order before the server disappeared. Just as well because they're so big I couldn't have eaten three! These tacos are so chock full of fillings you need a fork to eat them. I had the steak and pork, both were delicious but I slightly preferred the steak. Service was awful (no stars), but the food (that was available) was tasty (4 stars)! Last nights' dinner started like this--sat ourselves (grabbed high chair ourselves) and before we ordered, saw another party leave without being served. I just thought maybe they wanted something else, so didn't think much of it. We ordered chips and guacamole, kids quesadilla with fries, lengua burrito bowl, menudo and chicken con mole. The waiter gave us our drinks following the order: coke, sangria, and Capri suns. We also asked for water. A few minutes later, he returns and says they are out of water (which I thought was strange). Another few minutes later, he comes back and says no mole today, either. So I went with three tacos: asada, chorizo and lengua. Another some minutes pass and he brings out the chips and guacamole. It was very fresh, limey with no spice--perfect for the kiddies! My mom and I also enjoyed it! Just then I realized our waiter was also working in the kitchen, and there was only one other cook. Another guy was unloading boxes from the back. So I thought it was fine to cut them slack. 20 minutes pass and the rest of our food start to come out--the burrito bowl with a side of corn tortillas, my tacos, the menudo...and this is when the waiter tells us they are out of quesadillas. So my mom and I are served, but no food for the kids!? Literally, no tortillas with cheese?? I asked if they had papas fritas, so he runs back to the kitchen to check. We were still without silverware, napkins and sauces. I had seen where he got these from for so I served myself. They kept two bottles of El Yucateco at each table, but the house sauces tucked in the fridge were really good! Red sauce had good flavors and a nice kick to it. By this time, we saw our server leave the restaurant and another party walk out. Waited a good 15 minimum at the register to pay and get to-go containers because it appears a few of the cooks' buddies were in and chatting. He had his buddies start turning lights at the front off and lock the door a before 8 PM. Another party walked out without ordering. During check out, the cook did not know what we ordered so I had to tell him while he stretched his neck to see what was on our table. He discounted three of our drinks and the fries, but that did not compensate the poor experience. I have never seen that many people leave a restaurant before! Especially when the food is this good...hopefully this was just one "off" night for them. I will not return to eat in, but may consider take out if I am in the area. read more

Wow. Texas is on notice with this cozy little spot in Madison Wisconsin. I ordered 3 shredded chicken tacos with queso blanco, pico, and cilantro. Now. When I say "taco", I guess that translates to the owners as mini burritos because these things were monstrous!!! They come on deliciously delicate corn tortillas that were soft and flavorful. I don't know what was in their salsa, but it was knock your socks off flavorful, slightly spicy and smoky sweet. I'm in Madison for the night and pulled into a strip mall near my hotel to check my email, and saw this place. Out of curiosity, I looked it up on Yelp. Normally I stay away from Mexican food in the Midwest. Even the authentic places tone it down for the gringos. I thought I might try it later on tonight. After checking into the hotel and sorting out work related issues, it was time for dinner. And this place didn't disappoint. It is more like the taquerias I visit in Texas (and in Mexico in the past). The menu is limited, and there isn't chips and salsa on the tables (it is on the menu, however). I think that is an American thing. Chips just fill me up so I can't finish my meal. I ended up with the steak burrito and a steak taco. They quickly came out and both were huge. The taco was on corn tortillas, and the meat was piled on it, along with cilantro and onions. I added a little green salsa to it and I was in heaven. I still had that monster burrito to eat. The thing was stuffed with grilled steak, lettuce, tomatoes, onions, a few beans, and what looked like queso chalco. Yumyumyum. Halfway through, I unfolded the tortilla and just started eating the innards with a fork. A young lady came in and after studying the menu, asked what I was eating. Tucked away behind a bridal store and tuxedo rental shop in a little Mexican themed strip mall on the East Side of Madison, is a wonderfully authentic Mexican restaurant called Taqueria Sabor Queretano. They just got a new printed menu today, my first time trying this business out. My husband and I ordered the menudo soup and lengua taco. I ordered a horchata drink - think Big Gulp sized! ($3). My lengua taco was $2, and it was actually big enough to make into two tacos with the double tortillas we received. The menudo soup is also a hearty portion size - we had to ask for the "small" size ($7), otherwise, it would have been large enough to feed at least two, likely three people. The service provided by our waiter, Mario, was good. I think Mario was the only waiter in the shop who speaks English - the owner/chef seemed to rely upon him for translation when I'd asked how long they had been open. He said three years now. Wow, that's a long time to be open and not yet have a yelp review. All the customers who walked in were from the neighborhood. I will definitely be coming back here again - food was great. Ambience was decent - a flat screen TV plays telenovelas in the background, a huge fan to cool us down from the heat of the food, and cases and cases of jarritos piled high up against the walls for storage. We had really high expectations for this place. We were really hungry coming home from the Brewers Opening Day game. Tradition for us is to grab some burritos after the game. We decided to try a place we've never been before... The reviews of this place were amazing! We both ordered a burrito. OMGoodness!! This is like the Godzilla of burritos. It was massive to say the least. I gave this place 3-stars for quantity. I think I'll get three meals easy out of this. I also gave it 3-stars for friendliness. The person who took our order was super friendly and helpful. He did not treat us bad for being the weird gringos who don't speak much Spanish. However, we found the burritos to lack flavor. I don't think there were any spices on it. I like a burrito with a little kick. I got the steak burrito and my husband got the chicken. The burrito was not lacking in meat. It had so much meat. Incredibly delicious food! Small and unassuming, this restaurant delivers BIG in flavor and value! We started with chips and salsa, which is always a risk. Will the chips be stale? Straight from a bag? Not here--these were fresh and crisp. They were served with two bottles of hot salsa, one salsa verde and one rojo. They were so flavorful and had a great kick! Um, I wanted a burrito. What I got was the size of my calf. I got the chicken burrito for $9. I now have upwards of three meals. The chicken was great. By no means dry or lacked flavor. My English 1 teacher gave out an assignment to visit a new restaurant and write a review of it. Since my wife and I have already been to virtually every affordable restaurant on the east side, finding a place to write about was a bit of a challenge, but after scouring Google, I found this tiny Mexican place just off East Washington. When we pulled up, we were immediately put off by the lack of decor and cheap, worn furnishings that looked like they'd come secondhand from an office's break room, but I had a grade to earn, so we forged ahead. The place initially appeared to be empty, but after we walked in a server appeared from the back. The menus consisted of printed pages in the heavy plastic booklets typical of small diners, and provided virtually no information about the meals beyond names and prices. Feeling only slightly adventurous, my wife ordered something mysterious called pambazo, but asked for chicken rather than the chorizo the server suggested. I decided to play it safe and ordered the mole; though I've never had it as a dish by itself, at least I've had meals including mole sauce before. The server explained to me in Spanish peppered with English that they were out of chicken, but he could make it with beef instead. "Is good," he assured me. Our food arrived in surprisingly short order. Pambazo turned out to be a giant sandwich-thing featuring shredded chicken, a crumbly white cheese and vegetables on puffy bread. The chicken was bland and watery and the vegetables shriveled -- both obviously came out of a can -- but the tasty bread saved the dish. The mole came on a wide plate with a huge hunk of beef drowned in the thick brown mole sauce at one end, a pool of runny, bland refried beans on the other, and a thin strip of white rice down the middle. Additionally, a stack of tiny corn tortillas were kept warm in a container on the side. The mole itself was pretty good; the beef was tender and shredded easily under my fork, and the sauce had a rich, earthy flavor with just a hint of bitterness. However, I'm not sure what I was supposed to do with the tortillas. Though the thick, warm tortillas you have with butter before a meal at Pedro's came to mind, there was nothing to put on these and they were thin and oddly dry. I decided to try making little mole taco/burrito-things out of them, but they were so small that if I tried to wrap up more than a bite at a time it got pretty messy. When we were full, there was still enough food on our plates to get an entire second dinner out of it. Our waiter had left the building sometime during our meal, so I wandered back to the counter to find someone who could get us to-go boxes. The only other person there was the cook, who was occupied way in the back of the kitchen, but there was a tall stack of styrofoam boxes next to the register. I helped myself to two of them. After boxing up our leftovers, there was nothing left to do but pay and leave. This is the part that every business truly lives for, and it's the one part that they almost never get wrong; no matter how poor the service is, you can always count on them being happy to take your money. Sadly, this was the restaurant's biggest failure. Wherever the server wandered off to, he still hadn't returned. I went up to the counter and managed to get the cook's attention, but he showed no interest in taking my money, only assuring me "he'll be right back", presumably referring to the server. He returned to the back of the kitchen and placed a phone call. We stood around and waited for several minutes. I was about ready to just guesstimate the bill and leave cash on the table when our server finally returned. The prices are comparable to Pedro's or other similar Mexican restaurants, but the food is merely adequate, and both the atmosphere and service are practically non-existent. While I wouldn't necessarily be opposed to giving them a second chance, given the number of restaurant options in the area, I doubt I ever will. read more

I'm from Texas, so I have been looking for a decent taco joint up here in Madison. Today, I found an acceptable establishment. The taco pastor was superbly delicious and well stuffed. I've found that different people like their horchata different ways, but for me, this may be my favorite horchata yet! Not very cinnamony, and creamy without being too terribly sweet. Anywayz....they know what I want....and I bring everybody here....my daughter likes the steak....my son chicken....and my girlfriend chorizo....if you come for tacos you order the especial...with NO crema...just kidding....I don't like it but my cutee patootee does. I ordered tacos over the phone when I first started eating here 2 or 3 years ago....walked out with a fish....they speak mainly spanish and I speak mainly....well....only english....anywayz...they're a lot better at that now. My favorite Mexican restaurants are Taqueria Guadalajara and El Poblano--Sable Queretano fits in with the best of the bunch. I love how they use crema on the plantains and the taco especial--the gordita shell was super fresh, thin, and delicious. This likely is the best Mexican food in Madison. Super authentic, great prices and friendly staff. Try the pambazo sandwich, it is spicy and overall ridiculously good. It is a large sandwich filled with chorizo and potato and dipped in a spicy guajillo pepper sauce. I recommend their chorizo if you enjoy spicy food! If spice is not your thing their carnitas is excellent and flavorful. Their guacamole is quite nice as well! I'm sure my bad experience with the tacos left me with great disappointment. I did not try the burritos here but what I saw people carry out were ginormous in size. I was severely let down by the over salted taco meat here. My advice is to skip the tacos and go for the burritos and the chimichanga. The Carne Asada plate my brother had wasn't that great either, it was just a lot of food on the plate with plantains with very little to no flavor at all. If you're looking for tacos go to Mercado Juarez, if you want burritos then this is probably where you want to be. read more

Stopped by before starting on my usual pilgrimage up I94. Place is pretty hard to find because it is hidden behind a McDonald, but I was happy I put in the effort. I had 3 tacos: pastor, barbaco and carnitas. All were good and came with perfect sauces, but what I liked most where the tortillas. They were the more rustic kind and looked like they might have been homemade with stone ground flour. It is a small thing, but I thing it is this sort of things that makes a taco joint stand out. I also liked the vibe of the place. Laid back, mostly South American patrons and a prompt, no frill kind of service. Oh And the World Cup on TV. Will probably stop by again for a quick bite on my way from or to I94 and maybe get something more portable to eat while on the road. read more

I have been to this simple establishment twice and have enjoyed my food immensely. Speaking of immense, the last time I went, my partner and I split a chicken burrito. We asked for the rice to be served outside the burrito. The waited suggested we have some guacamole inside so we agreed to give it a try. This was one hell of a burrito. Thank goodness we only ordered one. It was huge. However, we thought it was delicious, well-seasoned and oh so moist. We were very happy that we had the rice on the side. I think the burrito would have been way too heavy had it been inside. The beans inside were creamy and the guacamole added some tang from the lime overtones. It was the best burrito I ever ate. I drank a Tamarind Jaritos... so yummy! The ambience is just plain old, plain old. Really there is no ambience but the restaurant is very clean, service is good and the food excellent. A little further down the strip is La Michoacana which is a Mexican ice cream purveyor. The perfect dessert! FYI- there is a Weight Watcher office pretty close by too. When I read some of the other reviews, I decided to drive by a couple chains and find the hole-in-the wall that promised to hit the spot. The menu was in Spanish and had just a few choices. I was the only white girl in there. And I basically just pointed to what I wanted, got a nod and a smile and BAM - the food was packed and ready to go. And it was GOOD. Not just, it'll do after a long day in the car, but "maybe I'll head back to Madison one day" good. During a recent trip to Madison, my wife and I found Taqueria through our "friends" on Yelp. This place is literally located in a random strip center off the frontage road, behind a McDonald's. It is a bit sketchy feeling - in fact, my wife and I debated going here or doing the safe thing and hitting the Chipotle down the block. SO GLAD we went here. It is a medium sized Mexican joint with authentic food and great service. The waiters were great, kind, and quick to help with any needs. When we sat down, they brought chips and two kinds of salsas - I LOVE spicy foods and rarely do they affect me, but the hotter salsa had a nice kick and great flavor. The food we ordered definitely shined. I ordered Tripe tacos (get over the fear - tripe is awesome). These were outstanding!!! I also ordered the Al Pastor Sope - these were bigger than expected and also excellent. While I didn't order a burrito, I saw one being delivered - it looked like it weighted 5 pounds... OK, I love this place. The food is fantastic. Very authentic mexican. The tacos are large and very flavorful. The carnitas was a bit on the fatty side but that's the way I like them. What was really surprising was the steak platter. It has the usual thinly sliced bisteak, rice and beans but also includes fried plantains which are delicious. I usually get three meals out of this dish. They prepare your food fresh as you order it. Takes a while but it is worth it. I tried the pork, the chorizo, and the chicken. My favorite was the chorizo although they were all great. The guacamole was good but not great. They serve beer and wine and they have A good selection of bottled fruit soft drink beverages. They aren't overly friendly but they are efficient.
