So this has been a regular Burrito stop for me in Modesto for about ten years. I usually order either a carne asada burrito or a carnitas burrito. My most recent visit was on September 24, 2024. I ordered a Carne Asada burrito with no rice. Most burritos in Northern California are "Mission Style" - which means. meat (choices of meat are usually: carne asada ( beef), carnitas (deep fried pork), shredded pollo asada (chicken), Al Pastor ( marinated pork), and lengua (tongue)) with beans and rice - called a regular or you can get a super which adds guacamole, sour cream, cheese, and salsa for a dollar to two dollars more. Sometimes there are two to three choices of beens. ( ie refried, whole pinto beans and black beans) and in the yuppie places the standard white flour tortilla often has other choices like flour tortillas with spinach or chili in that tortilla. So the beef was nicely spiced ( not hot/chile but a blend of spices besides salt and pepper) and had a very good flavor. It was also tender, with no obvious fat. The beans were whole and flavorful. I opted to add grilled jalapeños. All in all it was a very tasty burrito and has been consistently good over the last decade. The service has always been friendly and efficient, the dinning area tho very basic has always been clean and tidy. One of my favorites here is their salsa bar, they have a chunky salsa which I call low medium in the heat level but very tasty and a thin hot sauce which is a bit hotter but still good. I'm a big fan of picante (hot) foods but I prefer the salsa over the straight hot sauce because side it has more flavors in it - tho sometimes I go just for the hot sauce as I'm feeling the need for heat. There are also other items in the salsa bar to add to your burrito or tacos or what ever you ordered such as grilled jalapeños, pickled jalapeños, marinated onions, sliced radishes, quartered lemons ( often squeezed on corn tortillas) etc If you like real Mexican food, you'll like Taqueria San Jose - my fav in Modesto of the dozen I've tried over the years. read more

Around the end of last year, they put out a new menu and seemed like they were doing a whole new rebrand of their restaurant. The food was great, they started opening 2 hrs earlier and staying open later. They started doing taco Tuesday with $1.50 tacos (they were smaller than the regular tacos, but still a good deal). The service was excellent, there was a wonderful woman working there who always made you feel welcome. I ate there so often, the woman knew my order by heart. Around a month ago the woman was no longer there, the staff seemed to be cut in half. Taco Tuesday went up to $2 a taco, and if you wanted carne asada, you have to pay regular price. They changed the hours back. The last 2 times I ate there, the service and food were terrible again. They gave me what looked like dry reheated carnitas from the day before, instead of carne asada I ordered. They had to remake my order. The last time I ordered a tostada. They didn't put the beans or guacamole that's supposed to come on it. Not sure what happened with the improvements, but it's back to mediocre food and mediocre service...and I'm back to eating elsewhere! read more

I friend of mine that has lived in Modesto all his life told me that Taqueria San Jose was the best Mexican restaurant in Modesto. So I had to try it. He was right. The food is amazing. I had the shredded pork enchilada. WOW it was so delicious. Their salsa bar is unique. For instance, have you ever had pickled onions? They are soo good, and make a tasty salsa. They must have 15 types of salsa. The staff are friendly and helpful. The seating is comfortable and spacious. The TV was playing Mexican programs - so authentic! We saw our food places on the shelf and the woman bagging it didn't go near it for another 8 minutes. This place used to be really good. Years ago. The last 3-4 times I went went there, there was always something that pissed me off. Today, the place had only 3 customers eating and only 3 waiting for their food, but I still waited 25 minutes for 4 tacos. 1. It's HOT, like they don't have an air conditioner. All that tells me is that they don't care about the customers comfort. Cool air cuts into their profits too much. 2. The employees are beyond sullen. There's is no, "Hello, can I help you?" No smiles, no "thank you, have a nice day." They all mumble and barely look at you. They seem almost irritated at having to help you. - It's almost as if the manger or owner left early and all the employees are sluffing off. 3. The wait. I stood, sweating, watching the cook for 25 minutes. He was in NO HURRY and he cooked only one thing at a time. Slowly. Very slowly. 4. I paid $9.98 for four skimpy, soggy tacos. First time here with my girl and it's hands down the freshest condiment bar: sauce, lime, onion, radish, and more.. I had the beef fajitas and it was pretty good. A little too seasoned for my taste. I like how small it is, it makes it feel more intimate and family oriented. I ordered a veggie burrito, extra crispy on the tortilla with light cheese and wanted it WET so I requested half Verde sauce and half Red Sauce on top Either I was really hungry that night (which I was, I was craving a burrito I hadn't had a good one in a long time) The girl at the register was nice and the cooks were friendly too. The entire staff speaks to you, the service was good, my food came quick even though we were the only people in the restaurant I recorded a mukbang video and tore that burrito up!! I went with a buddy who had been here previously. Menu selection is wide, including seafood. They have one board with the various selections, and then, another board against the window with a few photos of dinner plates and breakfast. I ordered the two tacos plate that comes with rice and beans. I was also able to get a medium agua de piña, which is quite unusual along highway 99, it seems. Most places only seem to have horchata. My buddy got a quesadilla. Drinks were given at the counter, along with some not-so-fresh chips that were sitting under heat lamps. Prices were reasonable. It was a bit over $10 for the plate and medium drink. There is a salsa bar between the tables near an entrance that also had jalapeño peppers and more. The food was delivered in a short time. It looked amazing, but wasn't great. It was around 8 p.m. when we went, so maybe, we just got leftovers. Everything lacked spice. The agua de piña didn't really taste like piña/pineapple--not even the Kool-Aid-style Zuko packets. I'd return, but I will probably keep looking for other Mexican restaurants. read more

Amazing al pastor, Carne asada, and shrimp cocktail. Fill up on ridiculously tasty cabbage salsa too. This is the best taqueria in the world...that's right I said the world! I've traveled all over the country (mexican food goes downhill very fast outside of USA/Mexico) and have yet to find a tacqueria with better flavor. The quesadillas and nachos are also amazing, but I always stick with the carne asada burrito because it's so well seasoned. For you vegetarians, the vegetarian burrito is VERY tasty. I've been coming here for years. My parents live around the corner and when it comes to Mexican food anything is better than Taco Bell. I usually order the burritos (carnitas, asada, pollo) it's all good. When it comes to the size of the burrito it's big. You get a lot for your money. The meat is ok, sometimes the asada is drier than it should be but the carnitas is awesome. The tacos are good but for the price I think it's a little high for what you get. The last two times I've eaten here the food was considerably different. If you had never been there before, you might be satisfied with the food. My findings: The house (red) salsa was hotter, refried beans appeared to be no longer made with lard (their claim to fame), so there was nothing to distinguish them. The rice was fine. This was my old stomping ground, so I will miss coming here every few weeks, but the food is no longer up to par. The place has evidently changed owners and has new cooks. I don't see any familiar staff. I decided to try the other location on Coffee. I have gone there twice recently. The Coffee location, from what I understand, still has the same owner. :) I was much happier with my experience at the Coffee location. I will return there, and from now on will bypass the Prescott location. read more
