This is my favorite Mexican food place and I have been going there for a long time. The owners and their children have always treated me like family and I have never had a bad meal at this place. Back in Nashville for the night and still on the hunt for great food. Taqueria Vallarta is another hidden gem. Located in a small shopping center, TV is one place to visit if you're looking for a great meal. Chips and salsa came with a very spicy salsa of carrots, onions and other veggies and is not for the light hearted. Wife tried the chili verde con carne, a delicious verse sauce with sliced beef, onions and served with chorizo refried beans and rice. I went with the carne guisada, another delicious ensemble of beef, grilled onions and jalapeños and seasoned perfectly. Fair warning Taqueria is a CASH ONLY restaurant so please be warned. Better say forst that it's cash only! I didn't see the hand written sign on the door walking in, and had to go back to pay the remainder cash that I was short. It's in a strip mall and I've never noticed it there while living in the area for 4 years. Well I've found my go-to authentic taco joint near Mt. Juliet/hermitage/Old Hickory. Finally! Haha. So the staff was very friendly and accommodating. From what I could tell it's a small family owned business. Daughters serving and momma cooking. Could be wrong but that was what I thought. Was clean inside. I'm not sure about the restrooms as I didn't use. On to the food. I ordered chips and salsa. It's not complimentary because they make their own tortilla chips....which were very good. The salsa is very good, and a decent amount of spicy (which I love). So thumbs up on the chips and salsa. My wife and I came to the conclusion that if you start with chips and salsa and they are good, that the food will be good as well. True in this case. They serve beer so i washed it down with a XX amber. I ordered 2 of each- AL pastor, and Carne asada tacos. They were the authentic smaller tacos with held together with double tortillas. Both were very good quality, flavorful tacos. So I'd recommend those for sure. If you like spicy, ask for the house made hot sauce fdom the kitchen! It's got the perfect kick if you like spicy. The server also recommended I try their avocado sauce from the kitchen as well. It was a delicious add on to the tasty tacos. So a small place with not updated interior...secret mom and pop place...as some call it, with authentic good tacos and sauces. This places screams authentic, from the Mexican market next door cooking their own carne asada to the hand written CASH ONLY sign on the door. This place has been here for at least 15 years! Or at least that's how long I've known of them. The atmosphere has a small, heavy and authentic feel, perfect to eat the greasy yummy food. The cheese dip is delicious so make sure you order some, unless you are lactose intolerant and then I'm sorry, it would be worth it though, just saying. I also order the chiles toreados. I like to eat them with my food for a mild spicy taste (unless you get unlucky, ha!) and I don't eat the seeds either so that helps with the luck. They have different dishes but my favorite had always been the carne asada burrito, that's my go to for ever in this place, I do try different things else where but honestly now that my tastes buds are less whiny, I would love to try all the different food they have there. Honestly everything that I have seen around the tables look delicious. I definitely will be back every time I get a chance! They have a customer until someone hangs the shoes for good. read more

This is a great spot for Mexican food! The salsa is more like a slaw it's a spicy onion and carrot melody and the chips are obviously made in house! Limes came with everything!! The tacos were great and the guacamole was plentiful and delicious! The price was good though it is cash only! Also no WiFi at all albeit on purpose as they want you to be in the moment visiting and talking with your table. I really liked this small family spot. read more

I asked for 2 tacos, got 4 plain, small tacos without cheese or salsa, then charged $10 for it. Unhappy with this hole in the wall place. Wanted a plate of nachos but after seeing the price of $15, decided on a few tacos. Got ripped off and won't be returning or recommending it to any others. Shame on you! read more

I have spent a lot of time all around Mexico. This is the real deal -- it's like eating in a hole in the wall taqueria in Guadalajara. This place is for people who like authentic Mexican low brow food, rather than Tex-Mex or "Gringo" versions of the cuisine. It is also for people who, when they walk in and realize that they are the only non-Mexicans in the joint, view this as a positive sign that "this must be the place" rather than one which engenders self consciousness. I can almost guarantee you will be the only native English speaker in the place (unless I'm there...) As for ambience - there isn't any, which is to say that it's perfect. It's flourescent lights, formica tables and steel chairs with red vinyl. Mexican tv blaring cheesy soap operas or soccer above the counter. Phone cards to call back to Mexico for sale. Just like Guadalara. Now let's talk food. If they don't bring them to you, ask them for some grilled jalapenos. They are fantastic, but be careful. The chips are prepared fresh and the hot sauces in the squeeze containers on the table are home made. The tacos are all-world. "Al Pastor" (spiced pork), "Carne Asada" (grilled steak) and "Camaron" (shrimp) are the best, and come piled high with the filling, cilantro, onion and a lime wedge. At a buck fifty each, they cannot be beat. The tortas are Mexican hot sandwiches. Order the "Carne Desebrada" - pulled beef. It is a meal in itself, with avocado, jalapeno and the most addictively flavored beef you will ever eat. I have friends that swear they are made of heroin. Other standouts include Shrimp Diablo (spicy shrimp), Chile Verde (pork in heavily spiced tomatillo sauce), Burrito al pastor (a burrito with the same filling as the tacos mentioned above), and fajita mixta (fajita with the kitchen sink). There are also lots of other "deeper" Mexican dishes like shrimp cocktail in tomato juice, menudo, various "caldos" and mojarro (a whole fried fish that you pick apart with your fingers). Drinks are Mexican beer, sodas, water, horchata or, if they have it that day, "agua de melon", which is cantaloupe juice that is out of this world. The place is CASH ONLY. Manuel and Ana, the owners, speak decent English. No one else does at all. They will always be there. Finally, back to the ambience/clientelle . I am not going to get into a whole social commentary thing, but if you are the type of person who will get jumpy walking into a dive where the people eating are guys who work landscaping, construction, etc. this is not for you, as this is precisely that place. (I literally hired a guy to do some drywall work for me while having lunch there one day.) But to put your mind at ease, I routinely bring my kids, wife, friends there and we are welcomed like family. No one is going to bite you. I thought I had finally found an authentic Mexican restaurant in my area. Unfortunately, it was pretty lackluster. I actually prefer the taco truck that's in a mechanic parking lot. They don't even serve free chip and salsa at this establishment. I ordered pastor tacos and they were pretty bland. Like some previous reviewer said, it's Mexican as it gets so if you are non Latino and get nervous being the only non Latino in a place you might not care for it. My heritage is white boy as it gets but I enjoy myself every time I go here even with the kids. Kids like the quesadillas and I like every thing I've tried so far. You can get a big Corona especial, tacos, caldo mariscos, lots of other authentic Mexican dishes. Looks like a hole in the wall so don't expect fine dining. If you want TX -mex go elsewhere. Legit. If you've relocated from Los Angeles and are looking for a replacement for authentic taco stands like Carnitas Michoacan or King Taco, this is the place. Carnitas are prepared correctly, the carne asada tacos are the best I've found in Nashville, and you get a lot of food for your money. The refried beans are clearly made from scratch, not some junk from a can. They have the Hecho en Mexico bottles of coca-cola too! read more

This place is absolutely FILTHY. Even the way the young girl who brought my drink touched the ice with her hand then touched my straw. The salt shakers were dirty, the salsa containers looked as if the had never been cleaned. It's over priced for what you get. The meat in the tacos and burritos were full of gristle and NOT seasoned.
