We were visiting nearby for the week and wanted to branch out from the resort restaurant where we…read morewere staying. One of the front desk staff recommended El Molcajete Mexican Grill, about a 5 minute easy drive away. Parking is right out front and there is plenty of it. Handicapped too, with no stairs or steps to get in or out. Nice, clean, welcoming and I LOVED the carved Mexican diningroom chairs with the hand painted agave plants. The artwork on the walls was mighty impressive too. Very pleasant. It was not crowded the night we went and it felt like a local, "regulars" crowd. Older, with lots of experience with the giant Margaritas served. I think there was at least one at every table. Husband tried the CAMARONES A LA DIABLA ($23): grilled shrimp with hot red sauce. Served with lettuce, sour cream, tomatoes, onions, rice, beans, avocado slices and tortillas. It was HUGE. The plate it was served on reminded me of the turn-table plate from a microwave oven! I tried the TACOS DE CAMARON ($23): grilled shrimp folded in three corn tortillas drenched with red sauce. Served with lettuce, sour cream, tomatoes, onions, bell peppers, rice, beans and avocado slices. I actually would have just ordered the regular street tacos if I had known mine was going to be drenched in red sauce. Both meals were tasty but neither of us could finish the huge portions. Staff is friendly & efficient. Food arrived very quickly too. There are two TVs on the wall, both tuned to some sporting event. I believe the sound was off as I also heard Mexican music quietly playing in the background. Nice place if this is your vibe for Mexican food (aka Tex-Mex). You won't leave hungry or unhappy, especially if you have a giant Margarita!

This place has the #1 Yelp rating in the area, so we'd been wanting to try it for a while and…read morefinally drove out from Poulsbo. The restaurant didn't live up to the hype. It was clean, but it feels like sitting in a fishbowl. Service was fast, and the margaritas were huge and very strong, which almost felt like a strategy to help you enjoy the experience more. Unfortunately, the food didn't deliver. The salsa was very bland with no kick, and the chips were barely better than bagged. One bite of the enchiladas made it seem the sauce was from a can. While the ingredients were all fresh and everything was plated and prepared nicely, it all lacked flavor. The fajitas were the same, very sweet, lacking flavor and underwhelming. Almost tasted like teriyaki sauce. It's disappointing to go out and get a meal that's worse than something you could quickly make at home. If you're coming from Poulsbo, Los Cazadores, or El Huarache are much better options.

Updating to add photos…read more We always love coming here. It's a bit of a drive, but if we're in the area, it's a definite fav!

I was waffling about whether to even write a review, because "OK" doesn't really rate my time. But…read morehere it goes. Molka Xete on a rainy day was pretty quiet at lunch. They have 2 tables for 4 and one table for 2, and both were taken. So we sat at the empty long community table in the middle. Seating is NOT plentiful, and I see why they take reservations later in the day. We'd checked out the menu online before coming, and knew we'd try the street tacos, with all the flavors, except the zucchini (!) and the Pastor, which is spicy pork. Now, pay attention when I say I'd looked at THEIR website before coming. The cashier announced the side bean soup was "a dollar extra". Apparently "complementary" means something else to them? They just looked blank when we said "thought that comes with it". A buck is fine, but CHANGE the ONLINE menu. Ok. Now you go and pick up your napkins, plastic spoons/forks, and water in the corner. (There's also the trash bins, so you can bus your own table after) If you ordered a soda, they are in a case in the back corner. They brought out the soup immediately. Oddly, it was in a little Styrofoam bowl, but only 1/3 full. (No problem, because it was so spicy I think it had jalapenos grated in to it.) Might want to change the size of the bowls, because it looked chintzy. The tacos arrived piping hot. The size is about the palm of your hand- "street taco" size. They say they are flour tacos, but they are thick and chewy. All are dressed only with cilantro and onion. 1. The rock fish was badly unseasoned. One little lime comes with the 5 tacos, and it was dry, at that. I couldn't use the table sauces, as the green was atomic, and the red was oddly umami, sort of savory, but not in a good way, and also way too hot for PNW palates! (Please note another reviewer mentioned she IS Mexican, and it was too hot for her!) 2. The chicken was more flavorful, but again, without any sauce, and dressed with cilantro and onion only. 3. Carne Asada- sirloin steak chopped? Well, it was full of connective tissue bits. Like, stick in your teeth forever. Dry. 4.Carnitas is the pork. This was good, because it had a little sauce of its own. 5. Best of the bunch was the Deshebrada- slow cooked beef, with quite a bit of tasty sauce. I'm sure ordering the $8 guacamole side dish would have picked up all the tacos and I'd recommend that if you want some kind of flavoring. I realize we only had the tacos, so I can't speak to the torta, sincronizada, or parrillada (I don't even know what that is)...and supposedly they have desserts, but I didn't see any. There is also a drink menu on the tables, with cocktails, which you don't see on their website. Final result was a 3. Some good flavors, most too spicy and dry. Not a fan of community seating, but no other choice given the tiny space. Tourists will probably keep this afloat.

Whether it's breakfast or lunch, the food has consistently been outstanding. The menu is available all day ,except for the BBQ, which starts around 1pm. My wife swears by the French dip, and I'd put their chicken fried steak up against anyone's--it's easily the best I've had. The omelets are huge and packed with fillings, and the breakfast plates are great value. You get the choice of hash browns with toast or a pancake the size of the plate, and both options are excellent (deciding is the hardest part). Lately we've been sitting in the bar area when we go in around lunchtime (usually Thursday or Friday before our weekly shopping). The bartender is fantastic--friendly, attentive, and makes a great Bloody Maria. Overall, Freeland Café has been consistently excellent for us: great food, generous portions, and reliable service every time. Highly recommended if you're in the area.
