Full disclosure I did not eat here on my most recent visit. It was closed despite the fact that it was only 7:35 and the sign said open until 8:00pm. This is a giant pet peeve of mine...if you say you are open until a certain time, stay open until that time! We went out of our way to go here and was incredibly disappointed to find the door locked and the employees ignoring us at the door as the cleaned up, a full 25 minutes before the declared closing time. We weren't the only ones...as we stayed in the parking lot deciding our next move, there were 8 cars that pulled in looking for Jumbo Burrito, some went to the door, some turned away, all were dumbfounded and disappointed...I can't believe they passed on that much revenue. This is the first time I have been here. The food is made fresh, I came around dinner time, and the line was out the door. It reminds me of an old-school Taqueria, where you walk down the cafeteria line and tell them what to put on your food. I had the El Pastor, it had a lovely flavor, with a hint of sweetness. Hands down the best Mexican food on the island and honestly in all of Washington in my experience. The authenticity shines through their meals and it's such a close knit family business which makes me want to keep going back. The ambiance and vibe is always sociable and hype which helps make time go by more quickly as they can be very busy. But it's always worth the wait. I'll preface this by stating I've lived in the area for a couple years now and I've had their food as takeout so I have had jumbo before ( via my lovely hubby who's on deployment) i never physically leave my house I am a DoorDash customer so I hadn't been to the establishment until yesterday Dec 10th, with my son. They was only two guests inside both seater and eating and no line and no one ordering. The man behind the counter was having a very friendly conversation with one of the gentleman seated across from the restaurant again it was empty and the counter is not close to the tables so we the four people could hear everything. I walked to the counter to see what the food looked like as I've only had it fully assembled and never had to order it myself I stood there and I noticed a woman in the back looking up at the counter. The man is still having his conversation and I'm still waiting quietly, I have a toddler so to keep him patient as it seems we will need to wait until they reach the end of their very important conversation I grab a juice from the well stocked fridge they have a wide selection of beverages and are fully stocked. The woman then comes to the front and both men the customer eating and the one behind the counter still conversing begins to make tacos I believe and hand them to the woman who then eats them by the register. My son takes his juice and places it on the counter, as we stand there still waiting they begin to ring up the man on the register and the man behind the counter finally spits out what can he get me. I did not order what I wanted and I did not get the toppings or customizations my husband gets which is chipotle chicken instead of carne asada bc I don't like carne asada but I enjoy fries and toppings. This is the first time I have not tipped at an establishment in oak harbor. Then a different woman came out and was nice and complimented my son. The other customers eating were ( Caucasian men) I am Mexican I speak Spanish I do look alternative and I hate to say this I felt very disappointed and disrespected. I knew from my experience at the restaurant I should not have eaten the food bc I knew Deep down since the vibe was bad it was not going to be good. ( no me iba caer bien) but I paid 24$ so I picked most of the meat off and ate it and it tasted good. The food is always excellent, and the workers are super nice. I ordered something wrong and they were super fast to be understanding and remake it without an issue even though it was on me. I love how customizable the dishes are and there's tons of good drink selections. I typically get the carne asada fries but i replace the carne asada with chicken (it's heat don't judge). I typically take home my order as there's not a ton of seating but that's whatever! if you get there when it isn't busy you shouldn't have a problem finding a spot to sit. This is a tough review when trying not to be subjective, even after being a long time customer. Everything on the menu is AMAZING and the service is even better. I travel to Mexico often for work and this is the closest I've come to what I've had in the mom and pop places in Mexico. The food is the best around by miles, but what makes Jumbo even better is the service. You're treated like family each and every time and efficiently too. Always with a smile and an engaging personality! Today, after I paid I asked for a sample of the salsa verse pork. They happily gave me that and an entire plate of samples of all their meats. We came here for years before we moved and we decided to stop by again yesterday since we were on the island for some errands. After 4 years, the food is just as good, portions are still huge, and service is always great. I was really thankful for them changing gloves upon my request due to allergies. They did it without a problem and were nice about it. Unfortunately Jumbo Burrito is way too far out of the way for us to frequently come but it's one of the places we have to go to anytime we're in Oak Harbor. I will say, expect to wait in line to order because they are popular and everyone else wants to eat there too. I don't know what my last review of Jumbo Burrito said... but they are *still* at 5 stars. I needed to post an update because I'd give them 10 if I could! There is always a line out the door-- and their food alone is worth it. However, their greatest, most wonderful strength is their customer service. They engage personally with every customer, even when they are working at warp speed. They often give kids a little special treat (with parents' permission, of course), which makes every child who enters feel special. Tonight, my daughter asked for Jumbo at 7:55. They were scheduled to close at 8:00 and we live 10 minutes away. I told her we weren't going to make it, even though it was on the way to our evening destination. When I drove past the business, I noticed the door was still open and I pulled over, knowing (and being fine with the fact) that they were likely closed and would need to turn us away. (If you've ever worked in a restaurant, you know what it's like to start putting everything away only to have that *one* customer come in and ask for something you've already packed away!) We were able to enter, and there were still several customers in the line. (I was grateful for that, alone!) We got in line, and-- not only did the sweet young woman who was working recognize my daughter, she recognized that she had had a bad day. She engaged my daughter in conversation about what was upsetting her and-- while building the perfect burrito-- proceeded to give her a pep talk. By the time we got to the cash register, my daughter was beaming. As someone who moved here from California and was exposed to great mexican food growing up, this place was very disappointing. I had pretty high expectations since we it was recommended to us a few times. It gave me Chipotle vibes and the salsa were very watered down. This place was setup a bit like a Subway but instead of sandwiches you could choose various things like sopes, tacos, or go for the namesake jumbo burrito. It has various meats and toppings setup behind a glass case and like Subway, you tell them what you want on your order. A good portion of the kitchen is viewable and showed the place was tidy and clean. When I got to the counter I ordered a jumbo junior burrito because the tortillas for the jumbo looked like they could double as a sail for a small boat. The junior was still big enough to double as a low intensity workout weight! I had them put on carne Asada, rice, pinto beans and had it topped with pico, lettuce cheese, squirt of lime and red and green salsa. At this point I recommend two things. A bib and/or a fork. You are going to need at least one, but I highly recommend both! My burrito was definitely good. I wouldn't say great, but definitely a cut above other similar dining options in the area. Service was excellent and the only complaint I have was I couldn't finish the last part of my burrito because the carne Asada in that part was like chewing on a thick steak flavored rubber band of gristle. I had to throw in the towel at that point. I will definitely give this place another try and go for one of the other meat options. read more
