The people that work in the store are extremely nice, but entering the store you're attacked and bombarded by beggars and people soliciting. There's constantly theft going on right under your nose and visible to everyone in there including the workers and security guard. Security is generally looking at their phone or sitting in the window of the store at Starbucks. It's difficult to shop here and not be bothered by these obstacles. I wish that the University Of Chicago Police would try to amp up the security around this Target location on 53rd St. It's a thieves paradise . This location has a smaller selection of store items than most Targets. It's more of an Express Target if anything. The workers were super friendly upon entry and let me know the carts have been recently wiped down ready for my use. There's also security by the entrance. While it was nice to have workers to make sure masks and social distancing is enforced, it would've been more efficient to have one of them outside. Once the person is inside the without a mask the damage is already done, which makes it kinda pointless to have all these safety precautions. There should be an employee outside limiting entry to ensure higher success for social distancing. It was a bit crowded by the entrance which made me feel uneasy. This is an easy fix. I appreciated the fact that they weren't under staffed. They just need to be more efficient on how they use it. Street parking and garage parking is available for your convenience as well. Beware though when going by the entrance. There was a homeless man lingering around there muttering stuff to himself. This may be a potential safety issue. read more

I like having another option for non-food besides CVS or Walgreens in Hyde Park, esp for groceries, but they really should have more selections, Antwoin J notwithstanding (seriously dude, lose the street talk and obscenities). Being on the south side is NO excuse for under-serving or being half-a**. It's as if they are saying 'Look where you are, you don't deserve 2 levels or more variety'. This is why the Hyde Park/Kenwood area is losing stores and has so much empty space. I looked for a nasal spray online but didn't think to search the STORE online, and they didn't have it, so I ran to CVS which did. The self-checkout registers help avoid long lines. Ironically I find the Starbucks the most convenient feature. read more

Target generally, with help from this store, has helped me learn that if I need something that they have and I'm willing to pay for I can't have it, no matter how much time, effort and discipline I devote to attempting to order it. The website doesn't work well. Fortunately the store has a customer service telephone line that, if you keep calling back and allow it to ring 20 times, will reliably fail to pick up. The message is clear: whatever we have that you think you need, forget it. You can live without it. The government should nationalize the entire operation and overhaul it in the interest of customer service. Update: the cashier was super-helpful when I stopped by, and gave me a number to call; and the website issues mysteriously resolved on their own, enabling me to order something for pickup at the Logan Square location. I just called THEIR customer service desk and had the patience to wait while the phone rang 30 times before they FINALLY disconnected me. I tried sneaking in the back door by pressing the Pharmacy option on my next call; that took me to an ear-splitting fax machine noise. This morning I stopped in Target (Hyde Park) and was suddenly overwhelmed with intense dizziness and faintness. I could barely walk or keep my eyes open. I may have taken a few steps more and was trying to look around for help or a place to sit and Helene, a staff member, stepped up to help me. It can be embarrassing and scary especially during these times seeking assistance. But she was kind, found me a place to sit, and got me some water while assuring me I was not inconveniencing her or the store. During a time where people are more hesitant to help others, I commend her for stepping to my aid. read more

There are aggressive panhandlers who wait in front of the store on a daily basis. If you do not give them money, they follow you and get angry and shout. Some of them keep calling out for you if you do not respond to them. They stand directly in front of the door, blocking the entrance so that you are required to answer them to enter or leave. On occasion they come in the store and ask for money from customers waiting in line or shopping. One time a panhandler asked me to buy him alcohol because he left his ID at home. When I said no, he proceeded to ask everyone else in line one by one. I have spoken to the manager about this but she refuses to solve the problem and continues to allow them to harass customers. As a single woman it is much more dangerous to have to deal with this. read more

This place deserves more credit than it gets. Convenient location, and the staff are typically cheerful and helpful. Rarely, but sometimes, there are items out of stock. The checkout process is typically very quick, and the greeter always offers a friendly hello/goodbye. I don't have too high of standards going in because let's face it, it's a rough area--accordingly, my expectations are always exceeded, and I shop refreshed. This location isn't that big so they don't have a large selection of things. I go very frequently to get food, water or meds. I have even picked up a few things for my home. I do wish they had more cleaning items because although we are in the midst of this Pandemic even smaller stores have more cleaning and disaffecting products. When they did get some bleach I want to say for a small bottle it was almost $5 which is just crazy. I will continue to come to this location because it is close and I'm able to pick up somethings from them. I haven't had a problem with the customer service while I have been in the store but I do wish they were more consistent with wiping down the carts and/or registers. As always Folks... There are many Targets in Chicago, but how many are this great? I came in here to window shop. I can't even tell you the amount of times we were asked "can I help you?". Every single worker was so friendly! There were a lot of people working for a week day for a store of this size. It was great! If i weren't traveling, that would've instantly made me buy a lot more than I needed. The only part of service that was lacking was the check out line. Even with no one waiting for the line, the people at the register were only talking to each other and not calling us up. We ended up using self checkout. read more

Basic cleaning supplies are under lock & key. You can't get to them. In theory, a staff member will bring the cleaning supplies you want to the front desk. But it doesn't work. It's completely dysfunctional. And if you have medical problems, and you're standing there in lots of pain, you might start to get a bit annoyed after a while, and that's when security comes up, puts on a big macho act like they're going to beat you up, and then calls the police, and now tons of police cars are headed towards Target on 53rd St. because some guy wanted to buy some laundry detergent & bleach. I can find 2 L Diet Coke on the shelf one visit in four. Regular Coke and Cherry Coke by the dozen, but what must be among the top five carbonated beverages in the world -- nada. It's like the joke about the storekeeper who says "I won't carry that any more, the customers keep buying up all the stock." Most retailers track what people buy and adjust inventory, because running out leaves money on the table. Including the additional $40 I'd have spent. Nice addition to the area. This is a neighborhood Target with limited offerings that easily could've been a full scale store. I'm puzzled as to why it's not two story build out. They're making everything else in HP these days that way so why not this store? It's kinda mind boggling. Anyway, it serves the purpose for most items but don't expect this to be a one stop shopping experience. I went for cat litter but ended up SOL since all they had was $12 "lightweight" Tidy Cat. No way Im paying $12 for that when I can pay $7 for traditional Tidy Cat. Oh, well, guess I'm driving out to the burbs after all. The set up of the store is a little odd but after wandering around a bit I was able to find most other things I needed. The store employees were friendly and helpful. One of them stopped what he was doing to guide me to the cereal aisle. I didn't care for the multiple self check out lanes. They're cramped especially considering people have to now carry their own bags around to avoid Rahm's gouging of city residents. There wasn't a cashier working the non-checkout lane so the security guard said I had no choice but to use self checkout. Huh? Okkaay..... The prices are typical target prices. There's a small selection of clothing items, food, beauty/personal, pet, baby, etc. I visited early on a Sunday morning so it wasn't crowed. I LOVE Target so I had to pop in here within the first few days of my arrival in Chicago. I'm not sure where the complaints stem from, I was really impressed with how clean and organized the place was and every employee who saw me said hi and two asked if I needed help looking for anything. Their selection isn't that of a suburban Target, but they cover all the essentials. For example, the makeup section consists of one side of one short aisle whereas my home Target is two long aisles of makeup. I asked an employee and they said they validate parking in the downstairs garage for one hour with purchase. Also make sure to use their free Cartwheel App to scan any product you pick up to see if either it's on sale or something related is on sale, for example your Crest toothpaste might not have a promotion but the app will show that Colgate does. What really sent it over the edge for me today was they gave me a free reusable Target bag with a bunch of sample size products inside- protein bars, hair mask, soap, coupons etc. I love free stuff and I love Target! read more

The biggest problem I have with this particular location is that the grocery department stock is EXTREMELY low. There are NEVER any turkey or chicken products stocked, the produce is LOW or empty, one can't buy egg whites (only egg substitutes), and there are limited amounts of frozen vegetables. The store has liquor and snacks, but the snack aisles are not that great. The women's clothing department is a joke. I understand that this neighborhood store is small and won't stock everything, but there are hardly any clothes aside from VERY casual/sports gear. It used to be really nice, with most of the brands exclusive to Target available, but now it's terrible. I do like that the cosmetics and haircare aisles have products and colors for all skin tones and hair types. The electronics department is decent too. The home/bath aisles are VERY limited in anything outside of basic colors/styles. I can walk to this Target from my home, yet I still drive to another Target location to shop. I am here almost everyday. Lol I bet the employees look at us everyday and think "These people....Must leave around the corner" No... we don't. Target is a great addition to the Hyde park neighborhood unfortunately this target is by far one of the smallest stores that I have been to. They do not carry most products offered at other locations such as Starbucks coffee who the hell doesn't carry Starbucks coffee?! Yes they have a Starbucks store conveniently located around the front entrance but it is not open during their entire operational hours. So what's the plan again of the mini store? You must purchase the Starbucks products from the Starbucks store not target itself. Customer service is nonexistent. Avoid this location if possible they have a lot of work to do and they just opened not too long ago. It's like three through this location up overnight just to say that Hyde Park has a target. Customer service is definitely lacking at this Target. I've been here three times, and each time I've been here I've dealt with rude, condescending employees who act as if you are truly disturbing them and they are doing you a favor by helping you. I've had to call corporate on this particular store because of the level of attitude from the employees. The reviews claiming that there are only about 4 or 5 self checkout lanes and there is hardly a manned register - TRUE. The reviews claiming that it is very difficult to park in the garage because there aren't a lot of spaces - TRUE The reviews claiming that it is very difficult to exit said parking garage because the exit vouchers print on a separate receipt that is hard for the scanner at the exit gate to read (and heaven forbid it is windy outside) - TRUE My suggestion? Drive about 15 minutes further north to a REAL Target (on Roosevelt and Clark). One where there is TRULY free parking (and you don't need a voucher to enter or exit), where the registers are manned by humans, and you'll get very minimal (if no) attitude at all. read more

If you want to be mistreated by pharmacy staff who are frustrated working with customers and do not want to work through insurance issues, this is the location for you. Guarantees: unclear communication, rude attitude with patients picking up MEDICINE, and treating customers unfairly with curtness that is totally out of line. It would be so much simpler to speak fairly, not interrupt, and assist customers than being so hostile and negative as soon as the phone call comes through or guest walks to the counter. Get it together, pharmacy school means you are a professional and should treat patients with respect and (hopefully) some fraction of kindness or warmth wouldn't hurt. Horrible. read more

The store is really nice, but is a bit "bloated" in set-up and execution. I think they rushed this a bit, and it shows. They have in person and self-checkouts. I drove over to get some shaving cream and just really wanted to get a layout of the store. You receive a ticket in the garage upon entry. Be warned, there are not many spots at all to park on the 2nd level, Target gives you free parking up to 1 hr with purchase. When checking out, they give you two receipts, a parking voucher and your items. Now I have 3 pieces of paper (original parking ticket, voucher, and receiot). Nothing is labeled about the parking or anything in terms of validation, I had to ask a worker who looked like she didnt want to be bothered. A lot of the workers were engaging in talking with one another more than helping people out. Apparently another parking voucher printed out with an expired time in the self check out, I did not realize this until I was exiting and the customer advocate for LAZ parking charged me for parking for a 10min trip not to mention made me feel criminalized as if I was trying to pull a fast one. Also, the scanners to scan the voucher sucks, don't let it be windy. The Target brand is not diminished here, but this store will not receive any of my money in going forward. There has to be a standard of excellence set and follow through to ensure equipment is working correctly and customers receive adequate answers. I have stopped in this target many times when I see their ad on line. The items are usually food items. Hyde Park is a very eclectic area and the food item selection is so very limited. The staff will tell you they do not carry most advertised sale items. The ad for 9-8-19 featured Eggland's Best eggs 2/$5 12 count. This Target does not carry Eggland's 12 count. I currently have 3 rainchecks and each time I check to see if the item is in stock it isn't. They expire shortly after 30 days. I go north to shop Target because the Hyde Park location just does not have advertised food items. read more

The store is a neighborhood store, they don't really accept returns from other stores, but I think that's changing slowly, they are limited to many things a normal target would have,but I've always gotten exactly what I've went their for. Hands down the worst Target in the city. The policies at this store are wacky. I ordered a $130 lamp online for pick up at this store. Since the lamp was a bit heavy, I parked in their garage. After picking up the lamp, I went to have my to have my parking validated, and got denied. The store clerk told me that they do not validate parking for online purchases with in store pick up. I would need to buy something else in the store. It seems a little bit crazy that a purchase of a $.99 item will waive a $5 parking fee, but the purchase of $130 item will not. The selection in this target is pretty awful and they can go weeks without restocking some items. Product variety and product quantity are severely lacking compared to your standard target. The produce section is tiny and only really good if you are desperate for a specific ingredient. If it weren't so close I would never go here. read more

A Target Store in the area is a welcome addition to the neighborhood, but a store with a reputation for poor customer service is likely to fail. I was glad to see Target open its doors to the Hype Park neighborhood. Even though this store is smaller than any I've ever experienced, I was looking forward to having an opportunity to widen my selection of merchandise that the local target offers. The Hype Park location provides a limited selection of products and some grocery items that are available in larger stores, so I am appreciative with the convenience the Target location offers. In addition, a small Starbucks Coffee shop is located within the space which is a pleasant accent to the store. While I'm pleased with Target becoming part of the neighborhood, there are some staff issues. On several occasions when I have had to interact with the floor staff my experience has been less than desirable. I attempted to purchase a printing cable in the electronic's area, I brought the item to the cashier in the department for purchase, (I had to intrude on what seemed to be an important personal conversation), the representative was not sure how to complete the transaction. I spent nearly 30 minutes on a simple transaction which should have taken 5 minutes?! On another occasion, I attempted to pick up merchandise ordered by a friend via the internet and sent to the location. When I approached the customer service counter (I use that term loosely) I was ignored, given incorrect policy information, and left standing for 30 minutes with no clear answers. Finally, I was able to speak with what I assume was a manager or floor supervisor, who explained a policy that was reasonable. Since I was limited for time, I explained I would just have the individual come in another time, but then all protocol was abandon and they just gave me the item with no questions asked?! My hope these are two isolated incidents, but my intuition says, no. I see several others have had similar experiences. What seems clear is the staff needs further training and coaching. This is an issue that can be overcome. Target has the potential to be an anchor store in the neighborhood, but if the issues are not dealt with in a timely and thoughtful manner, the future does not bode well for the store whose motto is "Expect more, pay less". read more

Hyde Park really needed store like Target to pull the entire neighborhood together. With all the new retail shops and hotels popping up in HP I was happy when I saw target was going to open. They do have a smaller selection of most items, but it is a smaller location. I normally find everything I need here, but if there's something they don't have in store, I order it online and have it shipped to this store since I work close by. If I need something urgently, I suck it up and go to the target on Roosevelt or on Damen but love to have the option of having this Target so close by. I've never had any bad experiences with the staff however, and I've had all kinds of problems going in the store. My change didn't dispense from self checkout a few times, the cashier tried to help and couldn't figure it out but called someone who could. There were items that Target.com said were in stock online but hadn't been shelved yet, and an employee quickly went to retrieve the items from her cart(she was on stock duty). I'm the person who goes in the store completely not trying to look for things myself. I can ask any employee to help me, and they will physically take me to the isle and make sure I find what I need. Most places like Walgreens and Walmart will just tell you and isle number and send you on your way. Maybe most of these reviews may have some validity to them, but I've never caught them on a bad day...and I frequent this location more often than I should, lol. This location also has a Starbucks, and normally the service is pretty quick considering most times they only have one barista trying to do everything! There have been times where the would be a line, and I've seen target employees giving the barista a helping hand by at least taking customers orders and making some of the drinks.
