Rather than re-type my entire horror story out again, I'm going to copy and paste my Google review I left for the shop, and modify as applicable. Dishonest, disorganized, and disrespectful. That's the short summary of my experience. I am going to highlight a few of the most important problems I experienced: On two separate occasions, they installed parts from my engine onto other customer's vehicles. First the alternator mount, second the clutch pressure plate. They also took several pulleys and wires that I had to insist he replace. Twice Bruce assured me that my engine was completed and ready for pickup. Two times I drove from Santa Rosa to Daly City, and both times, my engine was still disassembled. On the first occasion, several days after I attempted to pick it up, he started texting me that my pistons were scoring their cylinders because the engine was overheating, and that my fan was faulty. Again, this was after the thing was "already repaired." He refused to tell me which pistons were having the problem, and refused to provide pictures to confirm what was wrong. On the second occasion, after confirming multiple times that the engine was complete and ready for pick up, it was disassembled when I arrived - actually, more disassembled than the first time. As you can see, it's half-assembled and the remaining parts were given to me in a jumbled mess in a box. It wasn't until AFTER I forced him to reassemble the engine - by literally following him around the shop shouting at him I wasn't leaving until he finished the job - that he informed me that my pressure plate was missing and he had a replacement part on its way. I was also missing the pulley and wheel for my alternator and had to insist on getting that back as well. I still don't know for sure if I have all the parts I need. The shop is a disgusting, disheveled mess. There is a blatant disregard for spilling oil, spraying paint, and leaving trash and spare parts all over the shop, parking lot, and street. Customer vehicles are parked in a jumbled mess, often blocking at least one of the two lanes of traffic. Bruce assured me that the work would be completed within a week. It took almost three months, and I only got it back - disassembled - when I did because I had to resort to texting and/or calling him every day to get updates. He never once apologized for all of the stress, all of the lies, all of the mistakes, nor the two trips down to discover a disassembled engine. I had the car at the shop because he did the original rebuild. I was getting lots of metal flakes in my engine oil. It's been nearly a year, and I still can't get the engine to run properly to confirm whether this original problem was ever even addressed. I've had a friend who rebuilds VWs help me, and he can't solve it either - our best guess at this point is that the cam or crank was installed incorrectly, because when TDC is set correctly, it won't fire... but when it's off by about 60-90 degrees, it will run, if poorly. Obviously, I cannot recommend strongly enough that you never work with these incompetent and untrustworthy people. If you, like two of the clients who witnessed my debacle while picking up the engine the second time insisted, have no alternative other than to go to Tassi, I would recommend the following: Take everything off or out of your vehicle that does not have to be in it, because it's unlikely you're going to get everything back. Take detailed pictures of everything that you do take to the shop, so you have records of what you left, because obviously, it's clear that you're not getting your vehicle or engine back with all the parts it needs. Your car will be "stored" on the street. Allow Tassi to work on your vehicle at your own risk. I deeply regret choosing to work with him. read more

I had this review in my drafts since october and never posted because DO NOT TAKE YOUR CAR HERE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD!! I wish I didn't not take my jetta here :( this started literally a YEAR AGO, I originally took my car in for an electrical issue causing the battery to drain in September of last year and had no sort of contact for weeks about it with weird excuses, they told me they got the wrong order part shipped to them twice, then the person who was supposed to work on it wasn't there, this entire time I was the one calling them asking what was going on, not one call from them keeping me updated, I felt helpless already spent money for it to be fixed. I finally get the word I can pickup my car in May of the next year. I swear, I can't make this shit up. As I pick it up I asked them for an itemized receipt, the receipt they sent me didn't reflect how much I have actually spent and I told them, then they inform me they don't remember how much I have spent since it has been over a longcourse of time, so I had to look up in my bank statements to show them to know how much I owe still. As I'm leaving I asked where my car was and they told me it was parked on the street and I had to literally walk down the street to look for it. As I finally get in my car and turn it on, the battery is dead. They did not fix anything after 8 months and paying 2k for labor and a new cluster. I could cry, still am. I take it to a different mechanic, they inform me they cannot work on it since the previous mechanic at tassi put in these used parts in my car WHICH IS ILLEGAL. I called tassi telling them that they need to fix the issue from beforehand, my mistake as bringing it back. Brought my car back to them in may?? since they said they would fix the issue without charging labor, but it was the same shit, months without no contact and no estimated time it would be fixed. It is now October I have not had my car for a year basically, my registration expired for how long my car has been there and they call to inform me the police want to take my car away so I need to pick it up lol. I'm so tired of all this I don't even care anymore and just want my car back despite the issues. I come to pick up my car nothing is changed or fixed at all, the battery is still dying like when I originally had it come in for a year ago, it is a complete shit show, i come into my car my radio won't even turn on, my ac won't turn on, they took out my sunroof and top light thing and left it like this, and they were so many open wired in my car. It was not like this before, not only did they not fix anything at all and completely wasted all this time but my car was even in worse condition than when I originally brought it. I am just a girl in college I don't know shit about cars or how to be assertive in this whole process but I wasted to much time and money and my car is even more fucked, literally cried and wish I never brought my car to them in the first place. Bruce is the best. Had my Vanagon 2.0 aircooled engine rebuilt by them. Later had them install an aftermarket oil cooler. My van has never ran better. If you have a aircooled VW, Tassi is your best bet. read more

Would never recommend anyone go to Tassi Inc. Bruce built me a motor that was a pile of crap. I had to have another engine builder build me a new one. The new builder said everything in the motor was complete crap. Only the block and heads were salvageable. When I would call to speak to Bruce he was allegedly never there. One time I pulled up to the shop and he saw me and ran and hid in the back. The guys told me he wasn't there. Gave Tassi a second chance and they did me right, my car was running rough and getting horrible gas mileage. After self diagnose I believed it to be bad valves. So after ordering all the parts I needed I took my 73 to Tassi and talked to Bruce who gave me estimates on labor and any parts I might need. After all said and done my car running good again, just took back for post maintenance on top end rebuild. 0/5 stars. Been having my car in the shop since august 2023. Paid for all the items that need to be put in as well as pay $1000 for labor... this is now April 15,2024. It's been 8 months since my car has been in this shop. Came by multiple times and barely anything was done. My car had new bumpers, but since it's been left out for so long without doing majority of the work we paid for, it is now all rusted. When we took the car in, the car was running fine. Now the battery is acting up and car won't even start..... most horrible businesses I have ever been to. There shouldn't be any excuses as to why my car have been in the shop for this long and for not even 50% of the things I paid for to be done. 0/10, would not recommend. We even talked to the owner about just towing the car back to our house and get back our refund. He was supposed to tow it back to my house the following Thursday. This is now the second Thursday, and the car is still not towed to my house. I wasn't going to give a negative review but this is getting ridiculous! I have been more than patience. Been foing here for parts and some work on my cars since i was 16 years old. Great place for sourcing parts. Carry most parts other places dont and usually have tiers of quality available as well. Many of the negative reviews ive seen arient totally fair. Instead of getting serious and finishing their own projects, many people will dump their vehicles on Tassi for long term repairs and "filler" work and start to dodge calls for payments and deposits. Then forget to leave those details out when complaining to other people about the shop. Ive also firsthand experienced them asking clients on the phone or in person if they want to go with higher quality german parts or potentially lesser quality aftermarket parts and explain the benefits and drawbacks of both. People complaining about parts failures also dont explain what quality of parts they authorized for use. A lot of these vehicles are very old and even though new parts can be installed, a lot of those new parts are going to be attatched to very old parts. Which can prematurely wear out the new parts. It takes a little common sense and understanding. To all of the people who drive old aircooled vws just for the "vibes" or to look cool and dont even know how to turn a wrench on them, i suggest that all of you get to know your cars better. Do some research on what makes them tick as well as some basic fundamentals of automotive repair. These arient new cars and stuff happens. Give these guys a break. They do this out of passion. Stop abandoning your long term projects there and spend some actual money and set realistic expectations on time frames for completion. Itll help both sides. Bruce is a good guy. Duncan too. I have been using Tassi for over 10 years since I had a 72' camper bus. They always do the great job! When I brought my bus recently for a tune-up and transmission issue, and the bus came back to me with the tons of smile! Runs so smooth and great. I also asked them to fix some other jobs and they of course fixed them completely, and then I was noticed that they have replaced a few parts for free but I haven't asked them! I don't like to give a bad review but I've given this place the benefit of the doubt for way too long. So much potential but honestly the owner Bruce doesn't have any respect for his clients and he thinks since he doesn't overcharge, he can just string you along without any correspondence. There are endless stories of people who drop off their vehicle with an appointment and it stays on the lot for two weeks without getting worked on. Good luck calling and trying to talk to Bruce. He will not answer. Good luck trying to stop in and talk to Bruce in person. He will disappear. They claim they know how to do things but I have had multiple times were they do a repair completely wrong and claim they did it right. It's a bummer because it's hard to find places around here that can work on old Volkswagens. I don't know how someone can run a business and not have more pride. Bruce was the guru for Volkswagens but he just isn't in control and doesn't care to have an office manager and organize the place to make it run smoother. Sadly, when you are an owner of a vintage Volkswagen, you want to only have good vibes while driving these amazing vehicles but unfortunately you tend to leave Tassi's with a pit in your stomach because it's like pulling teeth getting things done and getting them done right. It's even worse when you realize you've already paid and you've already waited way too long to get the work done and then when it was done you discover it was done improperly and then you try to resolve the issue only to find it's impossible to get Bruce to commit to it and there's not a chance you want to leave the vehicle for another three weeks... This hurts giving a bad review but enough is enough... I spent thousands of dollars on my bus and half of it wasn't done right. Whether they were corners cut or just plain doing something wrong... I've tried to go in multiple times and talk to Bruce and left messages as well and have had no luck. Have I mentioned how frustrated this is??? Let alone the fact that I already paid for the service and waited weeks on end only to have shotty work done. A good price is only a good price if it's done right. This guy who works there is very rude and started to scream at me when my car arrived on a tow truck I called them In the morning to make sure they can take my car and when the tow truck arrived I spoke with them to and everything seemed fine........until I came there to pay the tow truck driver because he miss understood me with price so I came to pay him a bit more then we agreed which was fine..... And here comes a worker from tassi screaming and yelling at me and cursing at me telling me to leave and take my car with me and saying I never spoke to him at all........remind you spoke with the shop in the morning and confirmed with them when the car got there..... don't go here I would not recommend it ever read more

Bruce is very knowledgeable and has been working on VW's for decades. He runs a great shop and his team is very good at what they do. This is one of the only shops that has a proper machine shop and engine builder (Greg) capable of splitting your engine block and rebuilding it like new. My 1975 VW bus had a serious timing issue. The timing gear had worn out its rivet holes and had nearly 8 degrees of travel before engaging the cam shaft. I called all the "well regarded" vw shops. I was amazed to find how few did internal crank case work. One of the guys at BusLabs mentioned Greg the machinist at Tassi's. When I called him he knew exactly what had happened. He had collecting timing gears over the years as he rebuilt engines for this very reason. read more

This review is long overdue. First off, let me observe that Tassi has no real local competition. My legacy VW shops--City Automotive, Bug'n'Hare--are long gone. So, thank God for Tassi and for Bruce, Brian, and Duncan. This friendly bunch and their quirky crew know how to treat old souls and their almost-as-old vehicles. If you spend more than 20 minutes on-premise you'll be sure to meet some of their devoted fans and eavesdrop on this or that war story featuring an aging Vanagon or the like. But don't expect a precision operation or white-glove garage. Hardly. Fixing old VW's is a work of devotion. I suggest you do what I did: yield to a relaxed timetable and proprietor Bruce's good judgement and you will be rewarded. My '74 Beetle was spared a total loss claim by a supremely circumspect USAA adjuster. It needed most of a front-end and most of its antique moving parts/underpinnings--plus at the very least a new right-front fender, hub, wheel, and tire. Ten weeks later, it emerged from the Tassi spa with a full-body zhuzh and paint job, including intricately patched rear-body vent sections which had suffered 30 yrs of deep rust decay. But there was more to this makeover: all new chassis molding, window gaskets, assorted rubber accents, and new running boards; freshly spray-painted wheels, well-scrubbed replacement (used) tires, and a new odometer (nice touch!). USAA covered the collision damage; I covered the betterment. Tassi delivered way beyond expectation and well under even my most modest math. I have read every review on here of Tassi and frankly the bad ones are from people with little to zero mechanical understanding. I have been going to Tassi for over 20 years with numerous vehicles. I have been saved so many times by Bruce, Duncan, Dave and crew I have lost count. Reading the dishonest comments really does make me sick, they are the absolute opposite. You would be hard pressed to find better people. Do jobs run late, do mistakes happen, yes of course. Ever drive a Vanagon or work on them? Ever read the nightmare reviews on Eurovans, a vehicle most shops run a mile from. If you've spent some time under the hood or under a Vanagon you'd know what they are up against. The negative comments should be thrown at the companies that manufacture the vehicles, Tassi has to pick up the bad engineering. Firstly, the positive reviews are not fake. Myself and and another reviewer Bence O. live on the same street, both have Vanagon's. FYI - name is Edward and if you need an honest review I have been going to Tassi's since May 1994. Bruce, Duncan, Mark and the crew (Ray) are some of the kindest, most honest and decent people I have ever had the fortune to meet. Bruce and crew have gone over the line so many times in 16 years that I couldn't list them. No it isn't a glamor spot. There is no such thing as a simple diagnosis on a VW, epsecially vans. Quick example. VW placed a too thin cable between starter and battery on 1983 through 1986 models, not Tassi problem or issue - VW. I bought my Vanagon from Bruce nearly ten years ago. No single purchase has brought so much pleasure to me as an adult. Feel free to ask, FYI worst service I have ever received in my life has been at nameless Audi VW dealers with fancy waiting rooms. After getting my Jetta, I decided I wanted to take car of all my car troubles on my own, without going to family friends to help with my car. My dad had suggested Tassis. The first time I brought it in, Carlo had taken a look at the car and was really friendly and didn't talk to me like I was stupid and we discussed a couple things that could be done to fix it up. I had taken in the car the first time and the things that had to be fixed were, it just took a long week and half. Kind of pricey but not much to complain about The second time I brought it in, it took a week for me to get anyone on the phone to update me on the car, but when I got it back it seemed to be fine, the temp gage was working, and the water light was off. Then within two months the light was back on and more problems raised; whether it was their fault or not their was no communication. I called ten times in one week before getting a straight answer; then they said they had talked to my dad days earlier which was a lie because they didn't have his contact info, just mine and my mothers. All I have to say is the only person that didn't seem to be jerking me around was the mechanic Carlo. They may know what they are doing; but if you don't know much about cars yourself don't trust them. They will let your car sit for days, and not give you the time of day if they think you are stupid. There is something priceless about a certain vintage of VW vehicles. They have an intangible value that only the owners and admirers of these VWs understand. Tassi understands this. The specialize in keeping these vehicles on the road. The pictures show the amazing stock of recycled parts. This inventory is there to save the customer money. I've been here twice. Once was to buy a clutch alignment tool for my 84 Vanagon. He sold it to me for $1! Very cool. The second time, I went there on blind faith when my van decided to stop and needed to be towed. The transaxle had come loose from the wheel and stripped and snapped bolts to come completely detached. The repair was a greasy job that required a mechanic's touch to extract bolts and repair threads. He charged me the minimum he could at $125 total. He also got it done in less than a day. If you are looking for a shiny repair shop that doesn't charge you anything, go buy a new car under warranty and go to the dealer for repairs. If you are looking for a shop that understands the beauty in these old VWs, go to Tassi's. read more

Nice people but unfortunately not very good mechanics. I took my Corrado there to diagnose poor engine performance, a battery drain, and an oil leak. Engine performance: They changed the distributor, spark plug wires, and spark plugs, even though I told them I had just changed the spark plugs. There was no change to the engine. Battery drain: They said there was a short in the driver's door and that the aux H20 pump was seized. They changed the pump and "fixed" the short in the door. The battery still goes dead after 8 hours and after they worked in the door the window would not go down all the way because it was blocked by wires they moved and the power mirrors didn't work because they left the connector off. Oil leak: They changed a seal but the engine still leaks oil. 0 for 3. They may be okay with air-cooled VW but I wouldn't bring anything newer than a 1980 car to them. read more

Lets just say they are the reason I got rid of my beloved VW Eurovan. everytime I took it in - the reason got fixed but another problem would be made. I never once left feeling content. Oil all over my seats - smoker working on my van - broken wing mirror. the final straw came when they LOST my van and didn't know where it was. I was told it would be fixed in a week as it was an insurance claim - and it took 3 weeks. I didn't want to write a review but I think you should know what you are getting. no one will take responsibility and they pass you around from one to another. I've been taking my 2003 VW Beetle to Tassi for about 3 years for repairs. At first glance, Tassi looks like a VW graveyard (It's actually not! Those cars are Angels cuz their parts save you and me money). They are very much old time VW enthusiasts and it's very much a "Pop Shop"....minus the Mom. They know their stuff, get the work done, and the 1st time I went there the mechanic drew me a picture of what was wrong with my car! I also appreciate that they talk to you with respect which can be hard to come by in their industry. Tips for being serviced at Tassi: -Call a day or two before to give a heads up your coming in to let them know your cars illnesses -Being your car in early! Preferably VERY close to opening time. -Be ok with not having your car for a day! ;) They aren't the fastest, but if you appreciate quality work and great prices you can wait. read more

Well... to make a story short: - Their prices are reasonable BUT DO NOT BUY IT because - You'll be back within hours to refix whatever they fix for you and they will charge you again. - They will never call you to let you know that your car is done - Their appointment system does not work.
