This is going to be my go-to spot from now on for my older Mercedes, mainly because of Robin. He's super easy to talk to, honest, and very straightforward. I came in for a second opinion and was in a rush because I could tell something wasn't right while driving. I drive a lot, so I needed everything handled quickly, efficiently, and at a price that actually made sense. I have been to the Mercedes-Benz dealership in SF plenty of times, and they just never seem to get things right the first time, which required me to comeback for faults on them each time. That's why I decided to try a local mechanic instead, and I'm really glad I ended up here. THe whole experience felt smooth, no pressure, and no upselling. Just clear communication and solid work. I've been dealing with this company for the past 6 years for some odd reason every time that I come the price changes the last four times that I came the price was set the same which I was happy with I tempted to do business again called in and quiet about the same work same vehicle the price doubles I say I'll call back later I called back again the price drops 50 bucks I'll call back again the price goes up 20 I called back again it drops 25 more me not understanding three different calls from the same person with three different employees getting three different prices red flag for me I tell them that I have receipts they tell me that they still want $200 more this crab place is full of sheistiness the work is good but the pricing is Shady but we all know how Shady mechanics really are maybe I was just getting a good price for that day to bait me in to be overcharged in the future read more

Do not bring your car to Gage Automotive. I brought my car in because of my check engine light. They charged me $2000 and did a bunch of repairs, but did not address the issue with the check engine light. They said they did, and then it took another month for me to get them to turn the check engine light off, because apparently they didn't have the software to do it. The owner, Robin told me it would be included as the rest of that repair, but when I came to pick it up after they finally turned the check engine light off, he tried to charge me another $300. I found them evasive, not answering their phone, telling me somebody was there when they weren't. They even messed with the tire pressure on my car when I brought the car back in to get the check engine light turned off and got the tire pressure all wrong. I don't even know why they were messing with the tires at all. When I paid for the initial repair of $2000, they failed to tell me they were going to charge me fee because I was using a credit card. Even though I used a debit card, they still charged me the percentage. When I asked Robin why he didn't tell me about this extra charge, he said there was a sign. Why would I look for a sign? This is not standard. He did give me the money back on my next repair that he said I needed, but now I'm questioning if I ever needed that repair in the first place, which was a timing belt. After he turned the check engine light off, it came right back on two days later and when I called him to tell him that, he just said, I owed him money. Avoid this place. read more

I take no pleasure in writing this review. Robin returned my car with extensive addtional damage because he over torqued a bolt cover to the engine timing kit he installed. I found it funny that people think they gonna have their brake assembly and power steering assembly replaced for $600 lmao People expect mechanics to work for free seems like. This lady complaining about $1400 repair for brake and steering assembly should go live in Riverside or Nevada she ll get the price she expect, she is in the wrong place. I can't say enough good things about the quality of the work and service I received from Robin and the guys at Gage Automotive. My beloved 2010 Toyota Corolla was a loud, rattling mess with broken heat shields, and sorely in need of several other maintenance services. I brought my car in to the garage in the morning, and I was out and off to work at lunchtime the same day. Price was so reasonable I almost could not believe it, much better than the best quotes I could search out via Google for each service item. Amazing. My car now feels like new! Robin at Gage was recommended to me by my previous mechanic at Union St. Garage, who always seemed put out when I asked if I could bring my car in and then took days to get it done. Robin is the exact opposite. He's always told me, "Sure, bring it in" and often gets the job done in less than a full day. He's never done work without giving me a full estimate in advance and getting my okay for it, and in some cases, he's even given me multiple options. Costs and labor are always fair. I've avoided creating a Yelp account for probably around a decade but seems like mechanics are really taking advantage of people since the pandemic realizing people need their cars and claiming inflation etc. I specifically asked for a quote from Gage and they said it would be around $530 to fix the AC due to the hose leaking. That included parts (the hose and Freon) and labor. When I got there to pick up my car, the first thing he said was, "It's gonna be a lot higher than what I told you." Supposedly due to the Freon being more expensive. He said it went from $20 to $100 per bottle. Okay, so why was the bill not $80 higher but like $200 higher than what he quoted. He snuck in all these extra fees. Don't go here or, if you do, be on the lookout for extra fees he doesn't mention in your quote. It's extremely hard to find a mechanic with integrity and I'm severely disappointed in this lack of straightforward communication (lying) and lack of follow through (more lying). Driving to 100 plus degree weather this weekend and hoping that the parts at least work as I see other posts mentioning faulty parts. read more

Greatly disappointed by how badly I was taken advantage of here. Had my classic Chevy van held hostage over the weekend when I wanted to pull out it, but said he was already working on it. Total bill ended up being $1400 for new brakes rotors and power steering assembly, something my friends said they could have done for about $600. So if you wanna get absolutely screwed and pay the price of your vehicle on repairs, the most I've ever spent at the mechanic in my entire life, go here. What an absolute ripoff. I will never go here again, but I guess that's this guy's goal. Just screw you really hard one time and take all your money so you can't afford to go back. His shop is called Gage Automotive, but if you call he will still say "Oh yes, yes, this is it".. NOT TRUE From everyone I've talked to the original owner of Bug and Hare was great, good service and an honest guy. Recently I went to Gage Automotive. I brought my 72 VW Bus there to be serviced and have a full run through done on it. After being insulted over and over, "he actually called my bus a piece of shit" to my friend, and after paying this a**hole $1800, the work was crappy, half done, shotty and incomplete. He continued to complain about the condition of my bus, and while he had no problem taking my money, he bitched and complained over and over to my friend. Finally after my friend had heard enough and said, "With the 3000 other shops in this town, there is no reason to put up with this jerk, let's go somewhere else".. We did. He was suppose to fix the brakes, charged me for a full replacement of all break components and then after taking it to Tassi, which btw is much better, it was pointed out to me that he didn't actually even do the work. He's a crook, a jerk, and I would HIGHLY suggest you NEVER go there and be sure to tell him that you don't appreciate his lying about the name and the usage of what use to be a reputable shop.. read more

He does not take responsibility for his crappy work and talks to his customers like they are stupid. DO NOT GO HERE. I cannot stress this enough. My rotors were getting warped so I came to Gage Auto to have them replaced. The owner said he'll change them. Charged me full price. Did excellent work below estimated costs. Not sure of the experiences these other Yelpers had, but my satisfaction was 100% Robin knew the old T-Bird of mine very well and confidently told me the repair on my radiator would be a 2-3 day turn around and estimated my cost at $550-$600 When he called the next day to tell me the system had just been clogged up and the repair was only $350, I was skeptical, especially after reading these other reviews, but the first thing I noticed was my shiny re cored and replaced radiator in the T bird and that it was no longer overheating like it had been when I took it in. It would have been easy to sell me a new radiator, they fixed this one at half the cost and in less than estimated time. Not everybody is a schmoozer. Robin is a straight talking no nonsense guy who tells it like it is. Some people may be put off by this, but I was extremely impressed with his work and recommend him highly If you want to be schmoozed and coddled go see your bartender. Robin and crew basically reset our 2000 Civic before our move to the midwest. New AC compressor, timing belt, water and fuel pumps, tuneup, cap/rotor, wires, etc. Excellent job all around. They fixed our A/C for only $285 dollars in less than 1 day, and also found a tiny leak that the car dealership failed to identify! I take my 1988 Mercury Marquis and my son's Mini Cooper there for service on a regular basis. My very first experience was going there for a brake job after comparing 3 other shops. Robin knows what he is doing and charges very fair prices. I watched him approach various smaller problems with my car and his knowhow shows his will do & can do attitude. Robin is very smart and a wicked sense of humor comes with it despite what others may say, but I enjoy irreverent humor - ALL I CARE IS CAN THE WORK GET DONE AT A FAIR PRICE! I started seeing steam coming from under my hood and immediately took my car to San Francisco Honda in the Marina, where they told me it was going to be $900 for a radiator repair and new thermostat. I called a few places to get a second opinion and they all quoted me something around $400 or $500. I took it to Robin and he was extremely nice and charged me a much for palatable price that didn't make me want to throw up. And as far as I can tell so far, he did a great job on the radiator job. Gage Auto was recommended to me by friends dad who has been bringing his VW bus here for many years. I have a 2001 VW GTI and i was tired of being ripped off by Royal Motors. As another reviewer stated Robin knows about cars and is very ingenious he will fix what he knows how to fix. I agree with that assessment. So far he has been great i have gone to him twice. But the leak they said they spotted didn't exist. In the end, I paid for the dealership to take a look (see earlier review) and it turned out to be loose wiring from the thermostat. I have been using Gage for many years now. First with an old VW Beetle that only Gage seemed to know how to fix right - and very affordably. Then with my work van, an Astro, that constantly needed repairs of some sort. Even though the costs were almost always above the estimate I was very happy with the repairs and service I got from Robin and the guys. My biggest issue is always turnaround time and they have always been very quick to finish the work. read more

True story, real customer. Hyundai Sonata experienced engine damage from low oil. Brought to several repair shops all told me "nobody repairs engines, engine had to be replaced". Price about $5,000 for used engine with installation. Brought it to Gage Automotive (my first time there) where Robin & his crew DID fix the engine and not for thousands but for hundreds. They replaced the rod bearings and the car is running fine. Robin is a knowledgeable, honest and courteous guy. He saved me thousands and I highly recommend Gage Automotive. read more

My wife's '94 Explorer had a faulty transmission, and she had paid over $1000.00 for the job from someone else;plus the warranty had just expired, I took it to Robin and he repaired it for HALF the price (this is almost a year ago, and it still is in great working order!)...He has found obscure car parts for my vintage Cadillac, repaired some minor dings,done basic oil changes and troubleshooting, figured out smog problems--everyone should be so lucky to have such a trusted guy. I brought my car to Gage Automotive because my air conditioner was not working. I emailed them about the problem and was told to come by and be prepared to leave the car for an hour. I did that and Robin walked me through the problems he found. After a discussion he made some calls to find a replacement part. I feel that he got the best price for me, he gave me an estimate and set up an appointment. I dropped my car off in the morning. The car was ready by noon. The final price was in the range that he quoted, the air conditioner works great and I am a happy driver. I definitely would work with Robin again on any future repairs.
