I knew the owner since I was 6 years old because there was a time when my mother owned a swapped big block Oldsmobile from the 80s that would always have electrical problems but was a blast to drive. Fast forward to 2025, and I finally got my first car (not as cool as my mom's, sadly, boo-hoo I'm poor), and the first place she recommended was this shop. In short: 1. The owner can be a little hard to talk to if you don't know Chinese, so I would highly recommend coming to this place with patience and a clear mind as top priority. 2. It's located on a semi-complex one-way street (make sure you have car insurance and GPS set) 3. It can really get busy here during the afternoon, so make sure you come at the time the owner tells you to. (HIGHLY recommend making an appointment) 4. I can say for certain these guys don't play around; the owner will make sure it's done right. (If not, then he will simply deny service, as what any other honest mechanic would do if they are not feeling confident) 5. He doesn't say it, but if he sees that you're at least making an effort on taking care of your car, he would be happy to see you anytime you come back 6. Classic cars are welcome here (never seen any 1910s - 50s cars here, but I have seen some 60s -80s cars every time I go here, looks like the owner takes time in the morning to work on them himself) 7. There are some pretty good restaurants and cafes up and down the street that are reasonably priced, so if you forget to bring snacks, it's not the end of the world. 8. As long as he's not working on someone else's car or doing paperwork, don't be afraid to step out of the breakroom to ask questions or advice about YOUR own car. 9. I was in downtown San Francisco when my car started overheating without warning. I was by this repair business and went in hoping for the best; I was treated extremely courteously and my cooling system was ultimately fixed. It was a simple defective radiator cap. While there, I had my car smogged. I can't say enough about the professionalism and the quality of the workmanship at this repair shop. I was very pleased and very well treated. While there, I clumsily cut my index finger and was treated medically by staff in a very courteous and professional way. I was overwhelmed with the high-quality treatment. My car's sway bar link broke in half on a San Francisco street and was dragging the ground. I chose this place at random from a list Geico's roadside assistance gave me, and I was not sorry. They had me fixed up in less than 30 minutes and the price was very reasonable. I appreciate them squeezing me in toward the end of their day and helping me get home. I come here for regular car maintenance because it's cheap. However the Service they provide is terrible. Owner of the place (fat asian) is extremely rude. They have been around for long time but still don't know how to operate the business properly. You have to build good relationship with customers in order to gain the trust. I also suspect they cheat when they change the oil. Not 100% sure though. They charge for synthetic oil but put regular one. It's crazy how they are still around. I absolutely love these guys. They most recently saved me $500 vs. what the Honda dealer wanted to charge me to replace my radiator. They've given me suggestions on how to save money on repairs in the past, and their advice has always rung true. They are friendly, honest and fast. And yes, it's cabbie central down there. Excellent, best in/out smog inspection ever for me, and I'm both old and a car guy! STAR-certified smog, and a good $20 less (30%) than the place nearer me on Potrero Hill. The shop looked well-run to me. I will recommend this place to friends from now on. I have been in this place once, i will give them 1 star out of 5. Because they are so rude and dont feel responsibility for their own job. They replaced my car's ( hyundai elantra ) rear brake with cheap staff and i replaced again in another reliable place in two month. The staff are so rude, especially boss ( small fat Asian guy). They replaced my brake pads and it was gone in 3 weeks because of his unprofessional work. But I didn't take recipe at that time and he denied his work in 3 weeks. Besides when I asked him check his system to find out his fault, he drove out my car outside and left my car in the street ( it was small fat Asian guy again) . However , I have been coming customer for more than one year , I wasn't satisfied any of his job except oil change so far. This is the worse auto body shop in the US. read more

So all of the sudden out of the blue I got in my Mercedes Benz 230 SLK kompressor and went to drive and there was no steering you could not steer the car it would only go straight the steering wheel was extremely stiff I stopped the car and opened the hood looked inside and one of the belts was off of something and when I touched a piece of the car it came off in my hand without a wrench so I knew something was wrong I didn't know what to do I don't know anything really about cars and my car was in a location that was many miles from my house I called AAA and they said they could tow me but tow me to where? I was able to leave my car in the location it was at and I started late in the afternoon to look for a garage that could do my car I walked in to this establishment and the gentleman working there was exceedingly nice he told me I could have my car towed in tomorrow morning and that they would work on it. I had found out in the interim that it was a tensioner and a pulley and a belt that controlled the power steering I ordered the parts and pick them up first thing in the morning my car was towed to this garage I gave the gentleman the parts and he said he would call me in an hour my car was done super quick and extremely well he was very good with his communication and called me promptly I was at work and I asked him if I could pick it up in the morning and he said absolutely when I picked up my car to work was done extraordinarily well and extremely reasonable he charged me about $50 an hour less labor then Mercedes-Benz dealership and put the put the parts I brought on the car where other garages and car places would not unless I bought the parts through them put them on the car. When I picked up my car I noticed there was a light on the dash and it was for a tail light that was out and the gentleman fixed that there right on the spot for $20 I can't tell you how grateful I was to find someone who was so amiable and skilled. I would recommend this repair center to anyone I have taken my car to a bunch of different garages and have been charged way more and more than likely paid for services that my car probably didn't need. Charge me $173 for the service which I so appreciated as my money it is super tight. Not in the habit of leaving reviews but I wanted to let be known that there are decent mechanics and this gentleman is one of them. read more

I have a 1990 Acura integra with 240k that spent most of it's life on the East Coast. I should get a new car, but this thing just won't quit, thanks largely to the excellent people at Auto Repair Center. No major work, but brakes, belts, odd noises, and regular bargain oil change -- all flawless over the past 2 years. Extremely competent. Very good price. Fast. Just look at the line of taxi and van fleets that go there for a testimonial to this shop. Came recommended by a friend, noticed upon entering - all the yellow taxis in town seem to come here for service - the floors are plain concrete with oil stains, not painted immaculate epoxy white like you're standing in the Mercedes friggin Benz showroom - there are modest buddhist shrines in the corners and in the rafters, and the heavy smell of aforementioned motor oil is lightly graced by incense smoke - the owner Mike seems like honest man. so far, in terms of speed, service and price, I haven't been disappointed yet. read more

You and I and everyone know that car repairs, car repair shops, and car repair people combined, represent probably the single most stressful and ambivalent part of our daily lives, (along with "understanding" our spouses/partners, haha jk, the dentist with their expensive "gloom and doom" scenarios, and the auto accident "process" with lawyers, adjusters and chiropractors, oh and yeah, the po po, for many obvious and not reasons...) as we bravely get up every day and try to manage, cope, and hang on to what we have, including whatever little left over green we might have after the Victoria's Secret credit card and kid's ballet is paid off. It's exactly that little left over green that these thieving car repair shops have their eye on. They don't give a ---- if that dishonest extra "grab" throws you into food stamps, they want it. They want their kids to go to UC Davis instead of SF State, and they expect you to pay the extra tuition. But what if I told you about a place that isn't about "all that." How do I know? Well for starters, a disclaimer. I am not now, or have ever been a business partner or associate of anyone in this place. What I have been is an over 20 years loyal, satisfied customer, that led to a friendship with the owner Kin and his staff (Mr. Bin, etc.) In dealing with these folks all these years, I can clearly see that they "get it." What do I mean by that? I mean that most car repair places are dumb asses. They see everyone coming through the door as potential "fleece victims." And yes, they do "profile." They are usually sexist, (you know where I'm going with that...) and sometimes "ageist" (older folks feel more vulnerable sometimes and don't want to "take chances" with car repairs, and appear to have more money than "reckless, to hell with it", no moolah youngsters,) and ALL of them take advantage of anyone they perceive as not knowing jack about cars. In a perfect world, shouldn't these ass----s be "protecting" people when they come In? After all, car repairs are primarily for functionality and safety. A badly repaired car, is a safety hazard, a "lethal weapon." So what's up with the "profit motive first?" I know it would be too cheesy and unrealistic, (and unbelievable too,) for my next words to be "eureka, I found a place that's totally different! I won't even try that. (Kin has to send his kids to college on your dime too! Doesn't he? Doesn't everybody?) But what I will say, is that you stand as good a chance of being treated fairly and being talked to honestly about your car repairs here, as any of the few and rare excellent car repair places. Those of you that know me personally, or through my reviews, know I can be "wide eyed in wonderment," "innocent and optimistic to a fault," "not hard to please," but I can also be skeptical, and ironic. So mix that (and me) all up, and here's where I will continue to bring my car. Do with that info as you wish. Having said all that, there are still a lot of unknowns. (I mean who REALLY knows the truth about these things? Only those car repair dudes themselves.) Who knows? I might have been "taken for a ride" (literally!) all these years. (Wouldn't that be hella funny...haha,) so all I can say with certainty is the old saying, "let the fool part with his money, if it makes him happy..." So having said that, I think I'll keep coming here. (That's just my own "dumb ass, know nothing" opinion. Please don't end up sayin "that whacked dude from yelp sent me here and I got fleeced and now my car is seriously janked too." Beware. At your own risk and discretion. You have been warned.) PS, Why then did I only give this place 4 stars when I love it so much? Tell you why. A while back, there was an employee here, (partner? part owner? Never really was clear, but he sure acted like he was the s--t,) who I felt was dishonest. I mean, I always had a weird feeling when I dealt with him and now thinking back, I feel he approached the stereotype that I painted earlier in this review, as far as being a hustler. Number one, I caught him in lies (always a bad tell tale sign at an auto repair place) and I'm sure he ripped me off on prices of repairs and need for them. So why did I stay you ask? Well I almost left, till suddenly and miraculously, HE left and opened his own place. (And had the nerve to call me and invite me to come to his new shop instead.) After he was gone, things have gone okay since then. So I take one star off for bad judgement in hiring/associating with a dishonest person like him, and for keeping him when you know that's how he is. (In all fairness, maybe he owed them money or something, I dunno...) Anyway, the mark of a good place is when you seldom think of them when you're driving around, and when the use you get out of your car for the money you paid is good, I almost drive for a living and I can tell you, I'm satisfied. My father-in-law and I used these guys to repair our domestic and Japanese cars for the last 17 years or so. Yes, this is not the cleanest shop and you won't get a VIP customer service treatment, but they will get the job done at the most competitive price. They can also find and install a certified used part if one fails in your vehicle and you are out of warranty, even a sophisticated and complex enough like turbo: on my Mazda CX-7 turbo started leaking oil, they sourced a used one with 15 000 miles on it, with the warranty at a fraction of a cost a dealership quoted me for a new one, installed fast with no issues, I used that turbo for more than 40 000 miles after that until I sold the car. read more
