I have been coming here with our families cars since Ernie and Tommy opened their shop in 1991 for minor or major auto repairs as well as receiving honest advice. I previously owned an 86 Honda Accord sedan that was in great condition thanks to AS taking care of the regular maintenance. The car had very low mileage (under 12k/yr is considered very good) but 5 yrs ago while checking the transmission they advised me that I should think about trading or selling it as their were notable traces that it would eventually go out which would cost more than what it was worth. As other Yelpsters who have brought their cars here, they often will not charge for minor issues or if there is a charge it is very reasonable. Today, I visited the shop to get an oil change and tire rotation and as you can see from the pics they keep a very clean and organized shop including the restrooms! read more

Had a wonderful experience at this shop. Called them for an emergency battery replacement, and they allowed me to come in immediately for help. They answer the phone right away, are very kind and informative, and are very straightforward with fair pricing. Their location is very convenient, and their actual shop is so organized and clean. When replacing my battery, they even offered to recharge my current battery overnight for a small fee rather than completing a battery replacement. Unfortunately, I needing a working battery right away, but I greatly appreciated their offer. Their pricing was very fair and about the same as my normal repairman. I've been getting my 2003 Infiniti G35 serviced here for the last 5 years. I have to say this is by far the best garage I've ever experienced *ever* (and I've been driving for over 35 years). I would give them more stars if it were possible. My car has over 150,000 miles on it - and it runs like new thanks to them. I actually test drove brand new cars, and couldn't get myself to give up my older car since it sounded and ran better. Among the reasons I recommend them are: - Sheer skill and competence. Where to start with this glowing review??? My 18 year old daughter left for a road trip 2 days ago after having her car serviced at home. As she was approaching San Francisco yesterday, she discovered a massive oil leak. She called Automotive Specialists promptly at their opening this morning at 7:00am. They took her car in right away and had it fixed under 3 hours later. It was a minor problem that the other mechanic overlooked. Tom and Ernie were extremely kind and honest about the situation, charging a fair price. They could have easily taken advantage of a young woman with limited car knowledge that was in a predicament. Instead, they did their job with integrity. My daughter RAVED about how nice and helpful they were. They even offered to phone the mechanic back home to explain the issue. I had an opportunity to get out of the office for an afternoon and take a company vehicle in for a much-needed smog check. I phoned the day before to set up an appointment and to find out how long the service would take. (I was told that a smog check usually takes about a half hour) I was a little concerned that being in this part of town, it would be a major pain in the ass getting in and out of the place. Much to my surprise, they were super easy to locate, and pulling in to the shop was hassle free. While they were performing the smog check on the vehicle, I sat in the one chair in what you can barely call a lobby. After maybe 10 minutes, I was told everything was done and that I could head out. Seriously? The one day they let me out of the office for a while and it's done in 10 minutes? Friendly service. Super duper quick smog checks! If you want to kill some time while escaping the office, look elsewhere. read more

These guys are great. I have a new generation 2014 Corvette Stingray Z51 and needed the oil and brake fluid upgraded to more track-capable fluids. My Chevy dealership was not responsive. Other repair shops were not comfortable working on such a new car. But Automotive Specialists took it on. I dropped the car off around 10am and by 1pm it was all done. And the final price matched the quote they had given me earlier. So these guys are very skilled, fast, and professional all the way around. I found Automotive Specialists from their excellent Yelp reviews, and after a round of phone calls to other well-reviewed mechanics. On my call with this shop, I learned that they were familiar with some of the problems specific to these cars, and that they could take me _same day_. Diagnostics begin with the first full hour's labor, at $125, and I quizzed about whether they would fix simple problems in the first hour. Yes, they do. I dropped my car off, and after walking Ernie through the work I'd done myself, where I figured the next problem might be, then said, "actually, if it takes only a little more than the first hour to fix, can I pre-authorize two hours to get it done in one shot?" He said certainly I could, so I signed for two hours. I got a call two hours later that they were done with diagnosis, had fixed the first issue, and wanted authorization for just $30 more for parts to replace the vacuum hoses that were at the root of the second issue. I had my car back in full working order, five hours after dropping it off, with detailed documentation of the work performed, for a very favorable price. I like these guys! My car was making one of those noises that cars really aren't supposed to make... a noise that says that you're about to open your wallet and pay some mechanic's rent for the next two months. Worse, it had been making this noise for a few weeks and I ignored it because I thought it was something bouncing around in the trunk. Oops! I dropped the car off, and a couple of hours later they called with a diagnosis and an estimate. The next day I picked up a happy car, and paid a reasonable price for getting it back to happiness. I'm a middle-aged woman, and in the past I've had plenty of mechanics see me as an easy mark and attempt to sell me things I didn't need. I gave them multiple openings to "tell me if it needs anything else" and "if you see something else just fix it, as long as it's less than $X" They didn't take that opportunity to try to rip me off. The best part is that they were very pleasant to deal with. They communicated clearly and promptly, treated me with respect, and were cheerful and friendly. Wow. These guys made my life so easy! Drove in at 8:30 am, showed them the nail in my tire. They asked me what time I wanted it, I said noon. I got one call before noon saying it was ready, so I drove back, they put the new tire on, filled my spare with air, and I was out the door. All for $25!!! So fast and easy. Awesome experience! i save my 5's for really deserving folks. We have taken about 4 cars there over the last 8 years. They have always been top-notch. They have done a few things for free as we have spent a good deal of money there. When some follow-up has been needed, they were responsive. What can I say! If I could give 6 stars I would! My car was acting up and need to be fixed right away. I drive my car for work so it was really important to get it back in a timely manner. These are mechanics you can trust. I've been lucky to only have regular oil changes be the reason I visit these guys. The one time I did have the engine light come on I didn't hesitate. They diagnosed my trouble quickly and were quick to give me a quote and even faster getting me back up and running. The one time that also stands out was when I brought my car to them for a smooth check. When I returned to pick up my car they informed me I needed a "star smog" which they don't conduct at their shop. They brought it to another facility for me! Who does that? So awesome! I brought in my 2001 Integra. It had this weird ping-pong clicking noise every time I went from stop to go. Basically any time I am going to first or second gear. I had this problem for a year now. Inherited it from the previous owner. None of the mechanics I brought it to knew what it was. This place found that it was because of some loose engine mounts and something to do with a loose cv joints. Very nice place. Easy to work with. No up-sell. I will be returning. read more

After getting ripped off by a less-trustworthy repair shop, I returned to Auto Specialists. Why did I ever leave? I foolishly moved to Oakland, then moved back, and etc. Anyhow, they quoted me a price, then lowered the price when they discovered that some of the work wasn't necessary. First time that's ever happened to me. As a bonus, they saved me $150 on a new door lock when they repaired the old one, which they just looked at to see what parts they needed to order ahead of time. Awesome. Also, it's a very clean shop, the receipts are incredibly detailed, and there are a ton of diplomas on the wall. read more

These guys are as good as it gets. Not only do they get the job done, they are also nice people. I've been having my vehicle serviced there for more years than I care to admit. I have 614,000 miles on an original engine because of Automotive Specialists. I live in Half Moon Bay and I pay a little extra for 100 mile towing from AAA, just to make sure I don't have any other repair shop work on my vehicle. 614,000 miles, do I need to say more? Well Again I wish I could star for different things. I would have given a 5 Star for fast and service and the people are great. This will probably be the lowest rating I have ever given and I hate to complain. So I took my car in for a transmission problem I was having, ended up forking out over $300 for a few things. The transmission was never fixed though, still had the same problems. Unfortunately I was leaving for Colorado for the summer the next day. But I was happy to have taken my car in before I drove a long distance. I have been having the same problems with my car all month but they keep getting worse. So I took it into a place that specializes in Jeeps and now I got over a $600 bill. BUT they told me my Transmission Fluid was about empty and thats what has been messing up my car. So it has caused leaking and all sorts of other problems. Having to replace all hoses and having to service the Transmission. The only thing I am pissed about is that when you take your car into a place saying you have a trasmission problem, you would expect them to check the fluid for the actual Transmission, Right? I probably wont take my car here again, sorry. read more

No surprise to find that every rating posted so far is a 5-star! Checkbook.org led me to Automotive Specialists over 7 years ago, and I have been their happy customer ever since. Fast, well-priced, accurate, and they value their customers. Their advice over what work to do and what work is not worth it keeps bolstering my trust. And then these last several months: after nearly a decade of perfect results from Automotive Specialists, my Miata stumped them. A few unsuccessful parts-replacement experiments later, they sent me to Royal Motors for their Mazda-specific code reader. (Reference: my 1-star rating of Royal Motors.) When the "service" Royal Motors offered resulted in a waste of both time and money, Automotive Specialists more than made up for it with comped parts and labor. Furthermore, when I came to them with results of research I had done on the Miata.net forums, they LISTENED to me, and we both are enjoying our success! read more
