I wanted to love Taste Budds - great coffee, sweet treats - this part is true and good. Cafes always have that more hippie vibe and I'm always ready for less than stellar cleanliness as part of the package and homey atmosphere. Not being at my own home though, I don't expect to be asked to clean my own table... or "encouraged" to, by the sign on each table and the cleaner and paper towels left for customers to clean, as if they're at the gym sweating on the equipment. This would be fine, I guess, if the staff were busy cleaning the bathroom... which brings me to that point. The bathroom needed serious cleaning, but that wasn't its only offense. I get that businesses want to save money, I get that they want to help the environment as I do too, but don't add insult to injury by having paper towels for customers to clean their own table in the dining room and then have a preachy sign in the bathroom that you're not allowed paper towels to dry your hands because of all of the trees you'll save and space you'll save in the landfill. I did enjoy my coffee and treat - yes, but no I wouldn't return and I would like my tip back, which by-the-way, you include as part of your order at the beginning of your visit. I was looking for the overall coffee shop experience. This place doesn't have great coffee, but it certainly one of the best places to hang out in the upper Hudson Valley. And the speciality drinks, smoothies, and some of the food are pretty good. here is my detailed review: The exterior of the cafe portended a cheap experience, with plastic furniture on a grass lawn and Christmas lights hung without care. At the end of a walkway into the coffee house a sign advertised an open mic night with poetry welcome. The inside of the shop was a completely different experience. It had a little of everything, including an impressive array of coffee syrups, fudge, books, cookies, and pastries. Several employees moved about behind the counters, each attired in tie-dye tee shirts and jeans. I ordered a raspberry smoothie. The patrons sat on the sofa, comfy chairs, stools with high tables, or comfortable wooden chairs pulled up to game tables. The pleasant scent of mocha seeped through countertops. As I sat down on a stool, I noticed the two beautiful stained glass windows opposite me. A painting of Easter Island Heads adorned the wall along with about a dozen other paintings. The smoothie was cool and flavorful. The semi-nerdy clientele looked like they were variously studying automata theory or Dostoevsky. A pair who must have had a part in The Royal Tenenbaums was carrying on a polite conversation to one side at low volume. Clearly this was a serious study zone. On my way out, I ordered a small regular coffee to go: probably Columbian, but the country of origin was not evident or offered. Kudos to Taste Budd's Cafe! They really came through for me when I had a bit of a cake emergency. Long story short I needed a birthday cake delivered to my daughter who is attending college in the area. They were so helpful over the phone and made the whole process an enjoyable experience which I am grateful for. My daughter was delighted by the delivery of her surprise birthday cake which was a delectable chocolate mousse cake. Once upon a time there was a mother far away from her college-aged daughter. The daughter was having a very tough time and Mom wanted to hug her but sadly, her arms weren't long enough. Mom thought about flowers? In a snowstorm, they'll likely die on the way there ... much less, freakin' expensive!! She closed her eyes and thought "where's daughter's happy place?" TASTE BUDD'S! Online Mom went and there was a place to order some Macaroons and chocolate covered strawberries that could be delivered THAT DAY for a mere $5!!! It sounds like a fairy tale but it's so true! I got a prompt, personal email explaining there was a snowstorm and potentially the delivery would be delayed but there was a break in the clouds (undoubtedly accompanied by angels) and Mom's love was delivered to a girl who cried happy tears. Thank you again, Daniel (hug for you forthcoming next time I visit) for being the postal service and creator of simulated Mom hugs in the form of delicious macaroons. read more

I love this place. When I teach at Bard, I spend hours, days even, here. It's a convenient bike ride from campus. It's spacious and has a variety of food, tasty chocolate treats and cakes. i'm such a FAN- but lately the bakers seem lazy, or maybe just bored with the same faire.. the desserts in the case don't look so beautiful and appetizing anymore- they appear to have been frozen or unfresh or just slapped together; -just lacks the great presentation of 10 years ago...It's too bad because they do taste so good- although the last Opera torte I got was a little chalky in texture (hense the previously frozen feature). They went from a home-y chalk board menu to a fancy lit one on the wall. Not sure if that matters, really; just an asthetic. And the service has become wicked slow... or just way slower than it needs to be. Walk with a spring in your step people; and don't act like the customers are invading your space. Not that I want fast food, but a coffee and coissant from the case or toasted bagel should not turn a 5 minute stop into 25 minutes- as who has that time en route to work in the morning? Meaning, if I had the time I'd make it at home. I wish the smoothies were real fruit, not syrups; and if you order avocado melt, it really should have AVOCADO on it, not some sort of pesto spread. disappointed there. We all know Yelp is a good resource for consumers to gain insight into a business, but it's also a great way for a business to improve its offerings. In my previous review, I mentioned Taste Budd's lack of consistency with regards to its coffee drinks. The owner promptly contacted me and told me they were going to be upping their training. Well, I'm here to declare that their lattes and cappuccino have indeed improved markedly, and so I'm increasing my rating by a star. Just ate here today. It used to be "The White Rabbit", but it still has the same whimsical and unique vibe. This place is atmospheric! There's a pretty archway at the entrance and outdoor tables. Inside, there are couches to relax on and the walls are painted with dreamy tree branches and clouds. It kinds of feels like you're Alice stepping into Wonderland. Taste Budd's has a wonderful array of beverages. I got a frozen latte today - it was creamy, refreshing, and had just the right amount of sweetness. Actually, it was one of the best frozen coffee drinks I have ever enjoyed. My breakfast panini was excellent. It consisted of an omelette, cheddar cheese, and vegetarian bacon (yup - they cater to the vegetarian crowd as well as the most carnivorous of folk). There are some fantastic wraps and sandwiches here, but I would say this restaurant's strength lies in its drinks and sweets. One can find an impressive assortment of teas, hot/cold coffees, etc There are baked goods like chocolate croissants, muffins, and cupcakes. Miniature cheesecakes, fruit tarts, and chocolate desserts are expertly arranged behind glass to tantalize even the staunchest of health nuts. There are also gourmet chocolates in various shapes and colors (today, I saw some in the form of tiny purple pyramids). These works of art are hard to resist (did I mention there were chocolate-covered popcorn balls on a stick?). If you're in Red Hook and are looking for a laid back place to enjoy lunch, coffee, or a sweet goodie (or perhaps all three?), try Taste Budd's Cafe. This place looks like somewhere I would love. But it doesn't measure up to the image. It gives off the vibe of being the type of hip place where the food you order is fresh and high quality, but just try one of their "smoothies" and you'll know better. There's no kitchen in Taste Budd's, so all their food is cooked either in the microwave or a panini press. This means that the food is usually frozen before being cooked and hence not fresh at all. Some of their sandwiches are quite good: the Gobblin' Goat is the best thing on the menu (apples, goat cheese, turkey, balsamic reduction), and the Baja Burrito is usually pretty good, but it has microwaved eggs which can turn out pretty rubbery sometimes. The baked goods at Taste Budd's are good (I presume they're brought in from a bakery somewhere else), and the atmosphere is very nice so if you want to come here for tea and a sweet and to hang out on the couch, you should go for it. DO NOT EVER ORDER A SMOOTHIE. They're made from disgusting powdered imitation fruit. I once tried the banana smoothie and it tasted like a liquid jolly rancher. So bad we had to return it. I've also watched other people taste their just-ordered smoothie and look at their friends in disbelief. read more

Came late afternoon for a lunch bite. Was pleasantly surprised how extensive the menu was! I ordered the goblin goat which lived up to its expectation with creamy goat cheese turkey apple and Carmelized onion in a balsamic glaze. My dining partner got a cafe salad which was lovely with olives and bean sprouts in a sesame ginger dressing. The bathrooms were clean the staff were kind and accommodating. Taste Budds, every Monday, 6-9. Knitting group on the comfortable couches. Last night I had their butternut squash soup. I asked them to serve it in a mug. No problem! It was amazing, very nicely seasoned. My favorite: A medium (24 oz.) iced (half the ice) chai latte. OMG!!! Favorite Taste Budds quote from my young teacher friend: "The reason I moved to Red Hook: Taste Budds Cafe. I love to see elementary kids come in with their Mom, or Dad, or both, and sit on the comfortable couches and read a book, next to a Bard student with the MacBook Pro, deep in studious thought. I love gazing at people hooking up for the first time. It's more than about the food. It's about the intriguing background music, it's about the experience, the mix of folks, that linger. My wife and I went to dinner there yesterday. After we finished dinner we stacked our plates up. After TWENTY FIVE minutes they took our plates and it wasn't even busy!!
