It's the best coffee place around here. They have quite a selection on their menu from sandwiches, soups, salads, desserts, pastries and chocolates. The chocolate is the best! We had the opportunity to learn all about chocolate and taste them. I hope it comes back soon! read more

Took a Sunday ride to Red Hook & happy to find this place - a cozy setting with nice staff & good food. Potato leek soup was delicious, enjoyed our sandwiches & especially liked the tasty fresh ciabatta bread. But the best was the reasonably priced The Rhinebecker. For dessert. I really dislike leaving bad reviews -- but the chicken parm sandwich I had here was hands down the worst sandwich I've purchased out to eat. A clearly frozen - and not even fully warm - breaded chicken cutlet, red sauce that looked like it had been poured directly from the jar onto my sandwich, and a thick piece of mozzarella that wasn't even warm. I ate a few bites and threw the rest away. Maybe their coffee and pastries are better? But it's not likely that I'll be back. read more

I can't believe anyone would give Taste Budds anything less than 5 stars! I mean everything is good and I don't know where to start. I've had great sandwiches, pastries, macarons, chai, coffees. Everything is always super fresh, employees are great. You can lounge on a couch or sit at a table. I really like cold pressed apple juice and other juices and smoothies. The music is nice and I've even bought a few CD's from there. There's also a big outdoor seating area if you want to dine al fresco. Cute place! read more

Good food, indifferent service The food here was good. Excellent knish. A fairly expansive menu that's bound to have something for everyone in your party. A largish seating area with seating outside as well. The store is neat and well kept. Unfortunately, the experience was marred by indifferent/amateur service. The ordering process was odd. The person taking my order seemed somewhat confused (e.g. "Do you want mustard with that?" for an item described as coming with homemade mustard). We had to wait an inordinate amount of time for our food to arrive. At one point the server (you order at the counter and the food is brought to your table) wandered by and asked us if we were waiting for anything else -- our table was empty and we had the flag indicating which order we were. I told her what we had ordered and she said "oh, I saw that sitting in the window". Sure enough everything arrived at the table cold shortly thereafter. Without an apology. Afterwards I went into the store and saw someone else's french fries sitting in the window for several minutes until the rest of the order arrived. Making fried items last so they hit the table hot and fresh is an important detail. There was a manager there hassling one of the counter people for standing around like there was nothing to do, so it's not like all of this was happening without supervision (n.b. to the manager, don't yell at the staff while in the front of the house). Too bad the manager wasn't spending more time expediting food and making sure it was run out while it was hot. Yes, this was my only visit, and I was only passing through town, but if I came this way again, I can't see myself giving them a second chance. It's too bad. Such a cute place to go grab breakfast, brunch, or lunch! I have never had bad food here, the service is fast and the employees are always great! (They seem to hire a lot of local youth which I think is great!) Their chocolates and dessert are great too and the options that you get to chose from are huge...I could eat here every day and not get bored! The only thing that steals the fifth star from me is that for a cafe, I've received a few lattes and etc. with burned milk...not the end of the world, but not that appetizing when you're expecting a smooth delicious latte. This is a solid place, with good food, very good desserts, and excellent prices. I had a tasty turkey, brie and avocado sandwich on a delicious warm pretzel roll. The roll was the best part. The carrot cake is quite good and moist, though the cake-to-frosting ratio could be improved: way to much frosting and not enough cake. The service was pleasant, albeit a bit slow. The vibe of the place is relaxed, with lots of college kids lounging on their laptops. You can hang out indefinitely, and the staff probably won't bother you. read more

Ok, I'm a regular, because the location is so close to Bard where I'm at school. The food is ok, the coffee is ok. There are some yummy things on the menu like their Mac n Cheese is RIDICULOUS Yummers! They have some desserts to die for, and some you could definitely pass on. It's not consistent across the board. You have to hunt and peck to find the best stuff there. Like today, I had a Foccacchia Sandwich, should have been divine, but... there were Big chunks of onion on one half, the cheese was off to the side and I didn't get why it was $8. Sigh. The portions are small for the money, for example the Oatmeal. I know what Oatmeal costs, why the kiddy portion sized bowl? Seriously, I think you get Five Bites for $7! No bueno. The coffee is good, really good, but I don't get why the stay cups are smaller than the to-go cups. The internet there is as inconsistent as the food. Sometimes it works, but most times it doesn't which is a royal drag. The service here flat out SUCKS! I am not sure why no one there smiles or who thought of how they serve food, but the thing is always a bit of a mess. Like, they will bring you food but not napkins or utensils. So you still need to get up and serve yourself. Why not just be self-serve??? Also, I seem to have to kiss ass to the staff to get them to smile, they all seem begrudgingly too busy to help me. It's annoying classic coffee house behavior, but these guys are wearing Tied Dies, so their bad attitude juxtapositioned against the hippie shirts really stands out. That being said, it's ok. It's the spot by school where I can go and try and get stuff done. The food is totally edible, when the right person prepares it. The baked goods are pretty good, like the scones are pretty darned decadent. If you want a killer sandwich and you don't care about WiFi, I'd hit JJs across the street instead. I come here a lot. Actually, I come here almost everyday. It's a given that I will be at Taste Budd's at least once a day, if not two or three times a day. This is mostly because it is open longer than most of the other places in Red Hook, and is one of the only coffee joints in Red Hook. As is with many places, they have good days and bad days. I have had coffee that has turned out to be a cup of half coffee grounds (gross), and sandwiches that were literally burnt black on one side. The food tends to be overpriced in general. The bagels are probably my favorite bagels from anywhere, and the breakfast sandwiches are always tasty. I am also a huge fan of the soy chai latte. I feel like the drawbacks are in general a result of allowing high schoolers to cook the food, and lack of clear management. But it is my most frequented hang out spot, and I would never stop coming here! read more

It's definitely a cute little cafe with lots of drink options & threats. Great place to sit and talk with a friend or get some work done. However, the baked goods that I have tried are not very good...rather stale-tasting actually. But the atmosphere definitely makes up for it. Plus the workers are nice. Just LOVE Taste Budd's Cafe! Never disappoints! Fast friendly service, fresh homemade food great price!

The first time we came to Taste Budd's, they were doing this Cuban sandwich special and the sandwich itself was amazing. The iced latte I had was just okay, and the smoothie--being made with flavored syrup and soda (!) instead of all fruit and juice--was a huge disappointment and cloyingly sweet (not to mention terribly unhealthy). We got everything to go but it seemed to take forever and we thought maybe we just hit them at a bad time. So we went back again once or twice and were not impressed. The food is good but, I think, slightly overpriced, and it seems to take FOREVER. I realize it's a coffee house with live music and stuff, so probably most of their customers are content to chill on the couches and wait a while for their food to be ready. We just stop in for sandwiches and a drink and aren't into standing around for 20 minutes waiting for a foccacia. I probably would have dug this place a lot more when I was younger and had time to kill, but now, with a kid and a seemingly endless list of errands to run, it's just not my scene. read more

I agree with the other reviewers -- the food is good (usually) but overpriced and not really worth what you're getting. The only exception to this rule is their breakfast foods. Their egg and cheese sandwich on a roll and breakfast panini are to die for - I dream about the fluffy eggs they put on these sandwiches! Basic coffee and lattes aren't too bad either. Their dessert displays are beautiful, but the pastries are usually expensive, especially with the size of the pastry you're getting. I didn't like hanging out here too often because it was always crowded, mostly with students from my school, and so hard to get around. The chairs, tables and couches are literally crammed up right against each other and one wrong step on the floor could end up with you tripping over a student's laptop cable. Sometimes there's also live music, which is nice if you're just relaxing with coffee and food, but distracting if you're trying to do work. All in all, this was not my top choice for a favorite coffeehouse hangout. Good place to socialize though, since you'll probably bump into at least 10 of your Bard friends here. read more

My boyfriend got me going to this place when I'm up by him and it's probably my favorite place for a sweet treat. I'm not a coffee drinker but the macarons are fantastic. I make sure my boyfriend brings me one every time they have a new flavor so I can try it. I'm torn between cinnamon French toast and the s'mores macs as my favorite but honestly all the ones I've tried I've been great. Just wished I lived closer! read more
