I have had delivery or take out from Taste of India on several occasions over the last few years. They are my favorite Indian restaurant in metro Jacksonville, but still just very good not great. Pros: -consistently get food I expect -naan and other breads are done well -gobi Manchurian is fantastic -meat typically not overcooked, which I find is a common issue with any stewed dish Cons: -expensive (though to be fair, who isn't overpriced these days?) -some bland dishes (korma and maybe one other I have tried but can't remember what dish) -charge for chutneys -no cold onion chutney For the last two things, it is commonplace in the northeast for Indian restaurants to include at least 3 chutneys - tamarind, mint and onion. It's a bit dark inside with more traditional Indian vibes. I'm sure dining in is fine, they are typically cordial and accommodating when I pickup my food. read more

So glad an Indian restaurant opened up near me as I love Indian food but I don't love driving. We decided on a whim to check out Taste of India and I am glad we did. The restaurant, service and drinks are nothing special but the food is top tier! They bring everything out as it is ready which means you are constantly getting fresh dishes and I love that. This is the most authentic Indian restaurant I have been to in this area. They have daily specials that are unusual to me because Im not from India. Thank goodness for google...LOL This is a palacious place with plenty of seating. Many choices for vegans and non-vegans on the menu. They also serve beer and wine. First time trying Taste of India and let me say we came in hungry. We hadn't been to an Indian restaurant in awhile and Saturday evening we decide we had waited too long and today was the day. We came in for an early dinner around 6:00PM and were able to get a table without a reservation. Once seated we started looking over the meal. Their we multiple appetizers on the meal that sounded amazing so of course we over did it. We ordered the Samosas, the Chicken Samosas (which were a special that night) Chili Shrimp, the Lamb Chops, and of course we had to get an order of Naan which we picked the Garlic Naan. I mean did you really have Indian if you don't order Naan? Garlic Naan: Amazing, so fresh we did know we couldn't rush in too much and eat it all since we needed it for dipping in our curry later. Samosas: You can't go wrong with them and a very tasty app if you are a vegetarian. I also like you can control how spicy you want them too. Chicken Samosas: Like I said earlier they were a special the night we were there. Let me say they were amazing. The best app of the night. They were so flavorful. I could have eaten 5 may 10 orders of them. If they have them when you go you have to order them. Chili Shrimp: A nice large serving which the perfect amount of spice. They also were cooked perfectly. They do come with the tails on but they aren't big tails so you can just eat the whole thing and you would not notice. Lamb Chops: You can hear them coming! I didn't know they were coming out on a sizzling hot skillet. They are served with 4 chops with nice Indian spices. THe only thing I wasn't a fan of were they were a little over cooked causing them to be tougher then I like. For my entrée and wait I know what you're thinking how can he possibly eat more? Well like I said earlier we didn't eat all the naan yet. I went with the Chicken Vindaloo. I will say some of the best Vindaloo I have had. It was the perfect amount of spice and when it got a little too hot you can cut it with there perfectly cooked rice. I will say I wish they did have a little more chicken in it because when I finished I had a lot of extra curry left which ended up having to be eaten of course but with no more chicken I was a lot of spice. The restaurant just opened three weeks ago and was packed. My husband ordered lamb and I ordered channa dal with bowls of long grain rice. We also ordered naan, samosas and raita. The curries were well seasoned and cooked for hours to develop complex flavors. I wish I had seen the dessert items or would have ordered them too. I was married to an Indian from Himachal Pradesh and used to cook North Indian food every night for our friends. If you live in north St Johns you can drive down 210 just past Publix instead of Baymeadows. The food is great and the service will improve with more staff. read more

I'm so happy to have this place close to home. It smelled divine walking in on a drizzly day and we were seated immediately. A friend I was with said she'd heard good things about their butter chicken so we tried that as well as the saag paneer. I'm usually more adventurous with Indian food but it was a good place to start. We also got some papadam and butter naan (please note the dishes come with rice, which I didn't realize, so...yeah, oops on the carb loading!) Papadam were good, served very crispy with a side of spiced chopped tomatoes, onions and cilantro. My friend said it was delish (I'm allergic to raw tomato, which is always a bit dangerous in an Indian restaurant, but I guess I'm reckless that way). Butter chicken was very tasty. Mild, creamy, with the chicken cooked well. Saag paneer was also good, though spicier than I expected. Not more than I like though. Paneer had good texture, and the sauce was also very creamy. Felt too decadent to really check the "eat your vegetables" box but oh well. Naan and rice both good. Menu is a touch limited - I'd love to have some onion pakora, or some chutneys with the papadam instead to start, as well as some pav (kheema pav especially) or tandoori options. But opening a restaurant in the middle of supply chain challenges is brave and most welcome, and there are several other options I look forward to trying. I had a great first experience here! When you walk in, there are sectioned areas of this pretty decently sized restaurant. This is definitely a restaurant where you cold hold multiple big parties at once. When I went, it wasn't too busy at all. Our waitress was very nice and patient with us. I ordered the tikka masala - mild, and my fiancé ordered the lamb vindaloo - medium, and we got a side of garlic naan. All dishes came out in less than 10 minutes. The tikka masala is a 5/5 for sure. It was creamy, delicious, the chicken wasn't dry or hard to bite into at all. I didn't try the vindaloo, but according to my fiancé, he said he really liked it. The garlic naan was also great & with the tikka masala sauce, it was a perfect meal. The service here was friendly and quick, and the food was delicious. What more could we ask for?! We'll definitely be back. I am eyeing that butter chicken next. read more

I placed an order online today for pickup for dinner. It was easy to place the order online; most of the menu items had a picture for reference and every item had a price provided. You can create an account or order as a guest. Once you place the order you are given an estimated pick up time. I placed my order around 3:40pm this afternoon and my estimated completion time was 5:40pm. I arrived at 5:40pm, walked into the restaurant and it was dead; there was no one there. Two other gentlemen came in to pick up orders and we were standing around waiting for someone to help us. I started saying "Hello, anyone here" a young lady from the other side walked over. She didn't greet any of us and just asked for the name the order was under. Only one order out of the three was ready. A few more people came in to pick up orders. I wasn't given a time on how long my order would be until after a few more people came in for pick up orders. I was told at that point it would be about two more minutes. This was surprising to me as the restaurant was literally empty! While I was waiting I started to review the take out menu and noticed the website didn't have certain items available like the paper menu, so it may be better to call in an order. Taste of India has let us down to often now. Love their naans and kulcha, but half the "lamb" they are sparingly using in their dishes has to be thrown out. Random people just don't order lamb. It has a certain taste. I come from a family that FARMS COWS. The chicken saag was tofu!!! When picking up my order I noticed it said Saag Paaner. The just ASSURED ME IT WAS ANOTHER WORD FOR chicken. I should have checked. Shame on me! Because I know what paaner means. Our Father's Day dinner was way less that we wanted. We were looking forward to taking our friends to Taste of India for awhile and it turned into one of the worst dining experiences I have experienced since moving to Saint Johns. We were quickly seated and were served water rather quickly then it was all downhill from there. We ordered drinks and after awhile our server came back and told me they were out of Jack Daniels. I ordered a beer expecting a bottle and it was a draft. As we are having drinks our waitress disappears for an extended time and when she returns we order our food. She was a nice girl but very hard to understand. After awhile she returns to tell us that they are out of chicken tandoori. We order something else and after 45 minutes from sitting down food starts coming out. The food was good but some dishes were cold. As we are halfway thru the meal she comes out with two orders of chicken tandoori and said she misunderstood the cook earlier. We accepted one and refused the 2nd order..... After the experience we had I will not be returning. I wish the business well in the future and hope they work on better customer service and better communication between the kitchen and waitress staff........ read more

Unplanned date night with my wife led us to Taste of India. We hadn't been here before, but it was relatively close to home, just off CR 210. We were warmly welcomed as we walked in, and immediately seated. It wasn't too crowded for a Friday night. The simple two-sided one-page menu made ordering easy even though we weren't familiar with all the dishes. Each menu option had good descriptions and the all of the friendly staff answered our annoying questions with a smile. My wife ordered the weekend special (I forgot the name) which was a slow-cooked rice entree with choice of main ingredient. I asked for the Chilli Shrimp to start and then the Lamb Rogan with a side of Butter Naan. No alcohol available on the premises so we stuck with water. First time checking out Taste of India, and let me say, it did not disappoint! Being Indian, it's often hard to find an Indian restaurant that doesn't fall short when compared to my mom's food. However.. taste of India was so incredibly delicious (even my mom and grandparents approved despite usually being tough critics of Indian food!!) we tried several dishes, but the ones that stood out to me the most were: tandoori fish (a whole fish that comes to the table SIZZLING and crispy- so so incredibly delicious), garlic naan, Palak paneer, and Gobi manuchurian. Everything else was also amazing, but would highly recommend starting off with the list above! We also tried the carrot halwa for dessert, and it came to the table warm and was not overly sweet! The mango lassi also is not too sweet, and has swirls of mango pulp throughout the drink to make it extra aesthetic In addition to the food, the staff were so welcoming, and it's really clear that they're putting their heart and soul into this restaurant. I had high hopes for Taste of India given their high ratings on Yelp and Google reviews, but was sadly underwhelmed. They have a bar off to the left side and a seating area off to the right. The bar area seems to still be in renovation phase from a prior establishment with odd decor of pictures of past presidents adorning the wall. We were handed menus, but the drinks menu only had alcoholic options on it with no indication that they sold non-alcoholic drinks. We had to ask when ordering if they sold a mango lassi, which they confirmed they offer. The mango lassi was a generous portion and well presented, but average tasting without hitting many of the yogurt flavor notes a lassi drink is supposed to hit. We started off with the garlic chicken appetizer which seemed to be a less spicy option among the chicken appetizers. Boy were we wrong...they were perhaps the spiciest thing we've had in the 100+ Indian restaurants dined in across multiple countries including India. It had our mouths on fire to the point where we had to send it back. When we asked what they had less spicy, the waitress suggested the chili chicken which is usually the item at other Indian restaurants which is generally pretty high on the heat level. When it came out, it was significantly less spicy the garlic chicken and decent in quality. The chicken tikka masala was similarly average and unremarkable. It was a decent portion, but it'd rank 2/5 if I had to hold it to the standards I hold the dish to among Indian restaurants back home for me in New Jersey. Naan was decent and standard with regards to what we've come to expect. Food was prepared with a more South Indian flair rather than in North Indian style. I haven't rated individual items as I usually do since I know I can't compare the Indian food in Florida to the quality of Indian food preparation at restaurants in the NY/NJ/PA area where I am from; my overall rating is given a generous Florida curve, as it is a newer business that is evidently trying, but has some areas for improvement. Service, despite being friendly, needs to be better. Menus were left on the table after ordering and still there when appetizers came...they were slowly removed over multiple table visits by various staff members. The server wasn't helpful at all when ordering, and didn't make any suggestions or warn us at all about spice levels. The menu could use an overhaul with a heat index on individual items to let guests know how spicy individual items are (we wouldn't have ordered the garlic chicken if we had known it was going to be the spiciest item we've ever had at a restaurant). It also needs to add all non-alcoholic drink options so customers can know what's on offer. I found it nice and refreshing to see the chef bring out items freshly cooked from the kitchen, but he was expressionless every time we saw him and it would have helped if he mentioned which dish was which upon dropping it off at the table. I feel like I'm being harsh as I write this, but I'm so used to service basics of the wait staff actually presenting the dish with its name, such that it really stands out when food is just dropped off without such a mention. We were going to order dessert, but our server just left the check without asking if we wanted any, so decided it wasn't worth the bother. Prices are reasonable, and other customers clearly love the restaurant based on reviews, but there's definitely some room for improvement in menu listings and service which I hope the business accepts as constructive criticism to make for a better customer experience moving forward. read more

I would give this place 10 stars if I could. I had a bit of trouble understanding the sweet girl that came to the table and a second great girl came over to help us. I was having trouble opening my napkin (heavy stick) and she asked if she could help. She helped us understand some things on the menu. My husband ordered Butter chicken and butter naan. He said this was better than mine, and have been cooking for 5+ years and he has never said that before. I ordered the tomato soup, Chicken korma and cheese naan. The soup and naan were unbelievably good. Think of tomato soup, cream and spiced oh so right. I ate the soup and naan and a small amount of chicken with rice. We were both stuffed and ordered Gulab Janun (little round donut soaked syrup). We gobbled them up even though we were already stuffed. I can't decide whether service or the food was better. We are having the leftovers tonight. When asked for to go boxes. She brought everything I needed without me asking-boxes foil plastic containers and a bag. Again this was great and we will be back. I think personally think THIS is the most authentic Indian restaurant in all of Jacksonville!! . I can tell as I grew up in India for 20 years and had been home sick for some good india food The Chaat as authentic as you would in the Hyderabad and that is a rare feat. We went there as a family and ordered chat. Tandoori chicken, butter naan, pepper chicken and butter chicken. The wait staff is attentive and kept our drinks topped off. The ambience is pleasant and you will see a lot of Indian families dining there which is good sign. The place is kept clean although the bathroom can use some fixing ( door handle etc) but overall clean and well stocked. The manager came couple of times to check in that the food and everything was well which is much appreciated. Also the food came out on time and right off the stove and well presented. Indian restaurants can be hit or miss for Indian people because we know the food and what it should taste like. While I love the idea of fusion Indian food, most of the time, I want the real deal spicy comfort food, not a fancy version. This place is the real deal. Their appetizers are delicious and addictive! We had the gobi manchurian (fried crispy saucy cauliflower) and a fried crispy version of baby corn that blew my mind. If you're a meat eater, go for the dry garlic chicken bites or the chilly chicken or chicken manchurian! I haven't tried their biriyani yet because I'm trying to get through their naan offerings first. These are made to order and so delicious and fluffy that you're going to forget your carb counter. We had green chilli, garlic, green chilli-cheese, cheese, and a very special Kashmiri version. My favorite was the the garlic naan but the Kashmiri naan was new to me with its slightly sweet flavor. I'd definitely get that again for the table. They have the usual Indian curries, but try the interesting ones like tender lamb (Roghan josh) and goat kheema (ground goat meat). All delicious. The service is attentive and friendly where they actually come out to ask you how you like the experience. If you've been to the Indian restaurants here, you know that's not the norm. Waiting for their bar to open so I can try out their take on the presidential drinks from the fun mural that they have up on the wall. Oh and a hot tip....ask for the tandoori grilled fish. I barely had time to take a picture before my companions dug in. Phew!! That was a lengthy post! But this is a great addition to the SJC area. FINALLY an Indian restaurant comes to St Johns! Having spent 20 years in Jacksonville and living on Baymeadows (the center of Indian cusine in North Florida), I'm super excited about this opening in our neighborhood. Ordered a sampler of Chicken Tikka, Gobi Manchurian, Chili Chicken, Samosas and Naan. All was delicious, especially the Tikka which was unique and amazingly flavorful. For those who are fans of Indian food, the spice was right across the board. If you are sensitive to the spice, order the mild! So happy to have Taste of India in the neighborhood and looking forward to continuing my love affair with this flavorful, delicious cuisine...now just across the street from my house! read more

It pains me to write these kinds of reviews, especially for Indian restaurants. I want so badly for everyone to experience the magic of our culture through food. Unfortunately, this is not the place to do it. First off, we spent almost two hours there because it took forever to get our order taken and twice as long to get the food. As we ordered, we were told there is no naan only roti. For those who don't know, roti is good, but more simple, thin, and easy. Chowpatti Roti is part of our every day diet, which is great, but not something to get excited about at a restaurant. Furthermore, roti is significantly easier and cheaper to make. I asked the waitress what the cost was for plain roti, and she then stated it would be the same price. Never in my life at Any Indian restaurant have I seen the roti for the price of naan! It's unheard of. To top it off, when it finally came, it was incredibly dry as if it was sitting there. UNACCEPTABLE! We leave our homes to go out to eat to escape from the daily stress and pressure of life and cooking in our own kitchens. To go to an Indian restaurant and eat dry inedible roti and then be charged the same price as garlic naan (not even plain naan) is extremely disappointing! The paneer tikka masala and butter chicken were just okay, but not worth waiting two hours for. We also ordered chicken biryani which we only took one bite of and didn't touch after. They used old pieces of fried chicken which had an odd taste, almost like it was old and meant for another dish but mixed into rice last minute. We were not the only ones upset! Several people complained of long wait times and some people even ended up leaving! Another family complained that they didn't receive half their order! I hope the owners see this and can improve because I really would love to see more Indian restaurants in Jacksonville! PS: As a reply to the ownership comment below, we did ask the manager about the charges and to speak with management, but we were told we could not do so and would have to pay the Naan price.
