It was 7:29 pm when I called to ask if we could still dine in and eat with them closing at 8:00 pm; the owner was warm and inviting and said we still had time to come in and eat. When we walked in we were greeted and could pick a table. 5 stars for the food! The General Tso's chicken was phenomenal! I'm talking crunchy and tender with no chewy bits! Great flavor and great quality chicken! Fried to perfection! The fried rice is great, you do not need to add any soy sauce! The pho is delicious! The broth is cooked for 12 hours and no MSG is added! Honestly, not the best place in Duluth to get Asian food. The chicken was very oily and it taste like the chicken was cook with other deep fried food. The fried shrimp... that was just all batter and the shrimp was so tiny and it is Not worth getting. The eggroll was super oily and some was still pink inside. All of the entrees we got were not as good as we thought. It had too much corn starch which made the liquid too thick. It was just too much corn starch. The fried rice did not have any flavor. The only thing that was good there was the chicken curry and lemon grass chicken, even so , the liquid is too thick. Its like all the dishes is too thick (liquid wise). They have switched over to a counter order and pick up vs full service. Counter order taker is super friendly and keeps things hopping. Menus are posted on the wall. Menu prices and hours online are not current. We ordered chicken and vegetable combo with egg rolls. Fried rice is not as pictured. It's more like white rice. The chicken was sliced thin and way over cooked. The egg rolls were overcooked and as much as I like egg rolls, these went in the trash. I used to come here quite a bit about 20 years ago, it has changed. I'm guessing it's still family owned. Well I'm guessing our waiter was third generation which means entitled, he was our waiter,the food was good but not as good as I remembered. Service was very lackluster no refills of water was offered , it was slow,only saw him once when ordering food and receiving food. Also saw him at our exit when we paid, no thank you for coming nothing. We clearly were treated as if he was doing us a favor for waiting on us. That being said. It was a disappointing revisit. We usually stop at Taste of Saigon when in Canal Park. We didn't realize they had changed to a no service establishment. You order at the counter, give them your name and either take-out or sit in the dining room. We ordered wonton soup and egg rolls since the menu had changed and some of our favorites were no longer available. We sat in the dining room and were surprised when they called our name. Our food was on a tray, soup in two plastic take-out containers, with no plates or bowls. The soup broth was good but the wontons were filled with a pasty, flavorless filling and so large we had trouble cutting them apart since they didn't provide knives. We had to cut them apart with the plastic soup spoon. It was awkward eating the soup from a container. The egg rolls were not good so after a few bites we put them back in the cellophane bag to throw away. I don't like giving bad reviews of places that are family owned but I have to be honest with this one (if it is still family owned). The gentleman taking orders was friendly and tried to explain how they don't have servers and are short on kitchen staff thus menu items are limited. Not sure if they will make a go of it or not. They only had one bun salad, so I went with that thinking you just can't go wrong. The salad only had 4 ingredients: vermicelli noodles, eggrolls, ice berg lettice and the sauce. What an upset. This is a restaurant that I have been coming to since I was teeny tiny! It is a favorite stop for my family always! The service is fast and the workers have been nothing but kind to us. Food recommendations: Egg rolls- my favorite in town! Amazing! Good sized Wonton soup- yum yum yum Any of the fried rice- delicious and well flavored, no MSG, so not too salty or soy sauced Sweet and sour chicken- it doesn't come with the sauce on it, which I love! Other items I've had and enjoy include the cream cheese wontons, beef and broccoli, and lo mein. On day 3 in Duluth, MN and wanted something different than pizza, burgers, sandwiches that didn't cost a fortune. I found Taste of Saigon on the web. It's a mix of Vietnamese and Chinese cuisine. I'm not a super big fan of Asian food, but my husband is, so we try it. They did not disappoint! We ordered the Appetizer Combo and General Taos Chicken. Everything was so good! My absolute FAVE was the shrimp on the app platter. They were HUGE, and just melted in your mouth! It wish I could get these back home!! Everything was tasty and hot. The dipping sauces were perfect for what we ordered. And it was all really reasonably priced for a place in Canal park! I go back here in a heartbeat! Also want to mention our waiter. I was a little Leary as I walked in. First, I'd just read other reviews on their pho and they were mixed - I mean from 2 to 4 stars from self-proclaimed Vietnamese customers. Secondly, as I sat down and perused the sparse pho menu I overheard the elderly waitress speak Korean to another customer, and literally thought "I wish they had bi bim bop if this place is Korean owned. A taste of Saigon indeed... I thought this was more of a Vietnamese restaurant, to be honest. I didn't really think that this was a Chinese restaurant that served only one kind of Pho. As it turned out, yep, it did and it was a little bit disappointing. I had thought that this was a bonafide authentic Vietnamese restaurant, as mentioned in the name of the restaurant, but it was just that - a taste of Saigon, with Chinese dishes, which rounded out the rest of the menu. While I didn't mind that, it was a chance to have Pho while in Minnesota. For what it was worth, I would have had better Pho elsewhere, which I actually did during my short stay in Duluth, MN. I spotted this place for dinner after having drinks with friends at the Grandma's Restaurant Grill. A Taste of Saigon was a block away, so my friend and I decided to leave the rental car at the Grandma's restaurant parking lot and walk on over. It was fantastic, to say, but the experience was just simply could've been better, but it is what it is. I thought it was just okay, but the Pho had seen better days. A Taste of Saigon is located on the bustling area of Lake Avenue in downtown Duluth. I was imagining that this restaurant was a standalone restaurant, but a it turns out, A Taste of Saigon is housed in those commercial buildings, which has multiple commercial tenants, one of which is A Taste of Saigon. With that said, A Taste of Saigon does not have much parking at all. Be prepared to find street parking wherever you can find it. For me, I just parked at the Grandma's Restaurant and Grill nearby and walked over (as mentioned earlier). They accept credit cards, so that's always amazing. I got here around 6:30pm on the Friday afternoon before the 2014 Grandma's Marathon. It was pretty cool that this place was particularly empty. I guess everyone else is packing the Italian restaurants feasting on pasta, but I prefer Pho for any meal, since it's that good and it has carbs (the rice noodles) anyway. To each, their own, I guess. The restaurant itself was not particularly big, but it had a few tables and it was clean. My friend and I were greeted enthusiastically and found a table near the back of the room. The service here was good, but average. The menu was loaded with Chinese cuisine, but the lone item of Pho was just in the soups section, not like in an authentic Vietnamese place where an entire page is dedicated to the variations of Pho. Sadly disappointing, but nonetheless, Pho had to be eaten in Minnesota for my 50 States Pho challenge. I ordered the combination Pho, along with deep fried egg rolls. Something I usually don't do before a marathon, but I was like, whatever, as I was on vacation anyhow. The egg rolls were pretty good, fresh, and delicious. The Pho, however, was served in a small Chinese type of bowl, not like the deep large Vietnamese bowls we all have come to love. I believe that they serve one size of Pho and they charge like $11 for it. Granted that's like a bit pricey for just one size of Pho, it's best to just eat and go without having to come back. I would rather have paid more for better presentation of Pho. Taste wise, you can tell that it was watered down. They were skimpy on the noodles and the server asked us whether or not we wanted more bean sprouts. I guess they knew when we had a lot more broth to deal with and no noodles. The overall experience here was decidedly mixed. While the prices here are decent, it depends what you want to eat here. While my choices for Pho were severely limited to just one item on the menu, it would be best to seek out actual Vietnamese restaurants in the area or drive down to Minneapolis-Saint Paul to find something obviously authentic, rather than in an Asian fusion place. That would be my suggestion really. I actually found a better one after running the Grandma's marathon, which was in Two Harbors, MN. Still, this place is pretty good for what they do. Unassuming Asian restaurant with a big surprise from the kitchen. We chose this restaurant on the recommendation from a local resident when faced with a seemingly endless list of establishments offering Asian cuisine, and we were not disappointed. The entire staff was friendly and multiple employees stopped by our table to make sure our expectations were being met. Our waiter was more than willing to accommodate our extremely picky 6 year old child child and her bland requests. The Vietnamese egg rolls were outstanding and our water glasses were never allowed to be less than half full. I had the beef pho and my wife had the spicy lemongrass chicken. We both agreed that the dishes presented to us were the best we've ever had, and we are not new comers to any style of Asian cuisine. If you like your beef pho spicy, order it with extra peppers. The heat of my dish was fantastic and the typical flavors and spices of a beef pho dish surely did not disappoint. Perhaps the biggest surprise was when the check arrived. This meal tasted like it should have cost at least 50% more than the figure reflected on our bill. Don't think twice about visiting this restaurant when you're in the area, you will not be disappointed. We will definitely be back whenever we're in the area. read more

Are you in Canal Park looking for something that's not a chain and/or has a 45 minute wait? Taste of Saigon is as good as it gets! The food is very good, nothing life changing, but the type of food you can eat several times a week without getting bored or fat (depending on what you order). We had mostly had Americanized-Asian items that were tasty, and a good price for the portion. The owner brought a free cup of tea while we waited for take out. This is definitely a family run place as you can see by all of the pictures by the cash register. The menu is pretty big, so I would think everyone could find something to their liking. We were up here for the holiday light display and decided to hit the shops before hand. We also decided we were hungry. We saw the photo in their window of Pho and we both decided to give it a try. The pho was pretty good. One serving was big enough for the both of us. I'm guessing this is most likely some of the better pho you can find in Duluth. It might be the only pho in Duluth. Don't get me wrong, it was good. We both liked it. But it's not like pho you can find in the Twin Cities. The staff was friendly and courteous. The price was great. Where to start for this one? As my family and I travel up here from the cities for the weekend we wanted to get some asian food since we were in the area. At first glance of the menu I notice this restaurant is called Taste of Saigon, but have more Chinese dish on the menu than Vietnamese dishes. We ended up ordering cream cheese puff, chicken wings, shrimp fried rice, and beef pho. All the food was bland with little to no flavor at all. The shrimp for the shrimp fried rice seem like they were boiled in a separatķe pot and then they just threw it in the fried rice once they finish cooking it. It was one of the worst fried rice I've ever had, pretty much taste like panda express fried rice. The pho was super bland couldn't taste no beef flavor in the broth at all. It was lacking so much flavor that my 5 year old child didn't even want to eat it at all. The chicken wings was just regular fried wings you get everywhere else, but my only complaint about it was why did it come with a side of plain oyster sauce for dipping? Okay, Vietnamese person here. Hear me out. This place is definitely just okay. We came here because we wanted pho specifically and they served me the second WORST bowl of I've ever had. The first worst was made my sister in-law, shhh don't tell. The portions are very generous for everything they serve. Service was nice and I have no complaints with that. But, back to the pho, it was flavorless and did not remotely come close to how pho should taste. They do not event have basil, but they gave us cilantro? I guess I should have been concerned when I saw the sign in the window "Now serving Pho!" How does a Vietnamese restaurant not serve pho from day one? We also ordered chicken wings and they were flavorless and they served it with oyster sauce, honestly the weirdest thing. Oyster sauce it not really meant to be a dipping sauce by itself, ick. The combination plates are plentiful and my son enjoyed it, but the eggrolls were under fried and much of the wrapping paper was mushy, but it was still somewhat satisfying to eat.
