Katherine, our tour guide, took us to some very unusual places to eat where the food was outstanding! The places where we stopped have been overlooked and that is unfortunate for those that don't stop. Those people are missing out some very savory food! Michelle is a triple threat: she loves people, food and its island producers w a fierce heart! We would never have gone to Makai sushi, inside the grocery for a great poke bowl and convo w the chef and learned of his career! What hard working guys! A personal detour to Moustache shaved ice (after learning from Michelle all shaved ice is NOT the same) got the tip to have the cheesecake gelato at Pepalanis and she was right! We ended at the shopping center for a market experience that included tasting a Kobe slider, croissants and crab/risotto ball w salad at Merrimans. We didn't bother w dinner, snacking on all the baked goods I got from Judy at Haiole girl and fruit from the farmers. Michelle gives you access and experiences you wouldn't have as an individual! My wife and I did the north shore tour in October 2017 and it was great. We had an awesome time and the host, Katherine, was very knowledgeable and personable throughout the tour. All the food we ate was great, and the experience of getting to chat with the chefs, bakers, and restaurant managers was really fun. It is a bit expensive, but totally worth it for the experience. We used the tour for our lunch and dinner that day, and we did not go home hungry. read more

We have been coming to Kauai for 10+years and I thought I knew it all, just went on Marte and Daniels North Shore tour and couldn't stop taking notes. Was fabulous! Their knowledge of sourcing local food, preparation and island heritage make his a must do when on Kauai. The group was even in a taping session at Trucking Delicious in Hanalei for the Food Network, which by the way was was delicious. Lots of fun, lots of different foods, and great people. I have a list of 7 new restaurants, Kauai is no longer a backwater for innovative sustainable local dishes, plenty to discover. You will be pleasantly surprised on this tour. We enjoyed the Royal Coconut Coast tour, expertly guided by Michelle Lemay. We started at Kealia Farm to learn about taro (kalo) farming from Adam. After a slice of rich homemade taro pie & lemonade, we proceeded to Al Pastor food truck for our choice of fresh ahi soft tacos. Then a unique stop at Hanai Market (former Kojima Market) had us sampling paiai scrapple, a Hawaiian version made with local taro/pork/breadfruit that was reminiscent of the original Pennsylvania scrapple, but better! A gourmet lilikoi cream at Wailua Shave Ice was another before heading to our last stop at Oasis by the Sea restaurant for refreshing minty mojito, starfruit appetizer and elegant dessert. This is a tour of discovery that satisfied the foodie plus the added fun of meeting owners/chef creators who promote the local farm to table concept. You'll need your own transport, so encourage family or friends to carpool and make it a fun outing for the afternoon. Loved the South Shore Tour we took last year, guided by Michelle, so this was our second tour with Tasting Kauai. I love traveling in general, but one of the main reasons I love traveling is trying new foods and experiencing different cultures... But mostly the food part. haha My boyfriend and I were on Kauai for two weeks and during that time we had been to a handful of restaurants and local spots and sadly none of them really impressed much. One of the places even gave me food poisoning. Blech! Needless to say I was pretty sad that few of the places we dined were enjoyable and I was so pleased that we were lucky enough to take part in one of these tours. The team that's taken over Tasting Kauai Food Tours has done extensive research on the places they've chosen to partner with and it shows. We stopped at five different spots on the South Shore tour and they were mostly, if not all, places you wouldn't think to stop if you were just visiting the island, but each one was a delicious hidden gem. You'll leave full for sure, but not stuffed to the brink. Everything was super tasty and you'll get to learn so much about foods on the island, the restaurants, and the culture of Kauai. We did North Shore tour with Susan, wanting to keep our tourist dollars going to Hanalei. The tour was very nice, but also a bit pricey. My only complaint was that we had too many show up for our group and it threw off all the tastings, the first two stops were not prepared for the number. The only place this created a problem was at the Hanalei Bread and Bakery. There were 3 of us who were at the last table to be seated. We were told we would be getting the same as the other tables, and eventually we did, sort of. We were told by Harmony that she would be taking care of getting us the same things and we got 3 of the 4 items. The one I really wanted to try, the oatmeal caramel cookie, was never offered. When I asked her about it before I was told that there were more people than they expected and they were not going to be able to let us taste the cookies. At that point I wasn't interested in paying $8 to buy them. When Susan asked me if we had been able to sample everything and I told her no we didn't get the caramel cookie, her response was, "Bummer". It may seem petty but when the tour is almost $200 for 2 of us and we were treated like party crashers at 1 of the 5 stops, it's a bummer to me. It seemed that things should have been a bit more organized, and it is not OK to respond to with "Bummer" when you don't get what you paid for. We still tipped, we still bought several of the products, we enjoyed the tour for the most part, and our money still stayed in Hanalei. read more

We went on the South Shore tour, and it was terrific. Michelle is a wonderful guide. She is very knowledgeable about both food and Hawaii in general and is a great ambassador to take you along the South Shore. All of the food we had a chance to eat was delicious (and be sure to come hungry). But the best thing about the tour was how educational it was -- at every stop, we had a chance to speak with the chef/proprietor and learned many new things about food, the food business, and Kauai. We've been on food tours in many cities, and this was definitely the best. We'd highly recommend it to friends who are visiting Kauai. read more

We took the South Shore food tour with Marta and Dan yesterday. We were promised a taste of Hawaiian street food and were not disappointed. We started at a small jam factory where we got to taste some of their pastry creations and had several jam samples. We visited a food truck where the chef uses molecular gastronomy to craft his food, and we ate the best burger - ever! Then onto stops at a local 'mom & pop' grocery store for an açai bowl (huge) and generous portion of poke, which was a Japanese-Hawaiian fusion. Incredibly delicious. After that, local gelato - yum! Finally, a culinary market that featured many local food businesses where we received a fantastic pastry and had the option to sample many other delicacies. Overall, by the end we were full and very happy. We never would have found these places on our own, so really appreciate the local knowledge and expertise of Marta and Dan. They are friendly, upbeat, and fantastic guides. Highly recommended! read more

Michelle and the food were great on the South Shore tour! I love jelly and jams and Monkeypod Jams was a treat! Got to taste almost everything they had and sample a great pastry featuring a jam, which was yummy! They also had delicious smelling homemade soups and sandwiches. The food truck was delicious with a very generous portion of expertly prepared pork and Brussel sprouts. Then, we went to the awesome grocery store and had the locally famous acai bowl and amazing poke bowl at the sushi bar. Both young men who ran these stops were very enthusiastic about their product. The grocery store also boasts a small deli case by the juice bar with homemade food made by the grocery owner. Looked amazing. Then we really enjoyed the gelato with another enthusiastic proprietor that takes serious pride in his product...was some great gelato! Last stop was the farmers market with live music and local vendors. Ended the trip with a treat from hoalie girl sweets....which we couldn't eat until the next morning because we were so full! I would definitely recommend this tour to anyone who will be staying for a week as a great starting place so you know where you can find some local GOOD food, as I'm finding that the guide books can be a bit wrong about what GOOD is. But, Michelle's tour was spot on and I was not disappointed. read more
