Ok, it's not gonna be your classic authentic taco that you'd get on a "coast" (I've had SoCal tacos), but honestly this taco was really tasty. Homemade Taco Bell is a good description and I actually stopped by Tasty Tacos bc there's no Taco Bell or Taco John's on Mills Civic. I got the original taco and without their hot sauce it's decent. It's like Taco Bell where you have to add their hot sauce to make it taste better. It's decently seasoned, but it could use more for my high standards. The fluffy taco shell is really good imo and honestly it didn't make me feel as bleh like I usually do after eating a lot of fast food. Each taco is a little under $4 but it's a really huge portion. Two tacos was super filling for me. I give it a 5/5 because as long as you go into it knowing it's fast-food style on the same level as Taco Bell, then it's a pretty solid taco. By far the worst food we've ever gotten from Tasty Taco. I would normally rate them at 4*'s. Today we hardly had anything inside the flour taco shells. I usually think they skimp a bit on what they put in their flour tacos, but today they took it to a new low. Literally hardly anything inside, including meat, beans, lettuce. AND we were not given any of their salsa. Very disappointing. They weren't busy either which could be an excuse at times. Not today. Just a few people at tables, and no line to place your order. I ordered an enchilada, a burrito, an original flour shell taco, & a hard shell taco. I'm not really sure what all the hype is about. The salsa was flavorless. The flour shell taco itself was great. However, none of the ingredients inside contributed to success. The ground beef wasn't seasoned well. They gave me the incorrect protein. I was going to say something. It's nice to find a local alternative to chain Mexican food. This location seems nice - large open seating area and a fairly fast line to order. Everything is a la carte (no "meals"), so it's nice to be able to mix and match. We both had hard shell beef tacos, which were very straightforward - meat, shredded lettuce and cheese. I liked the amount of cheese but the spouse prefers less. He had the tater tots and liked them; I had refried beans and an order of corn chips and queso (they mistakenly gave us flour chips but quickly corrected the error) - all were generously portioned. Their taco sauce is on the table and it all was as advertised - tasty! They have Pepsi products for drinks, which is another plus in my book. No drive-through, just inside seating. The main down side is pandemic related - not a single seat in the dining area was empty and there wasn't any accommodation for social spacing. It pretty much looked like what I suspect was "normal" from before-times. With omicron hitting, this is not a great look. read more

This is the worst Mexican food I think I have ever had. Their corn tacos are bad. Their wheat ones are beyond awful. Taco Bell is amazing compared to this place. One of the many places I miss. This is a local chain of "fast food" taco shops. The only place where it's all about the shell instead of the filling. Thirty years ago there was probably just one location and it was near my office. All these years later there are 6, I think, scattered around the city. And thank goodness in 30 years that taco hasn't changed. Still the same size but $3 instead of $1.50. The same fluffy flour she'll fried to that perfect golden brown for just that right crispyness at the edges and filled with plenty of beef and beans, cheese and lettuce. There are other Mexican favorites of the menu for reasonable prices, but this taco is the only thing that keeps me coming back. Yum. This particular location is larger than the others and very clean. I ordered the original and bean flour tacos, because I wanted to try both. I also ordered the flour nachos. The tacos were so so good. The meat on the original taco is delicious and flavorful. 10/10 would order the original flour tacos again. Would I order the bean taco again? No. It wasn't great and compared to the original, it just wasn't good. The flour nachos themselves were really good and not greasy, but the cheese sauce... kinda gross. It tasted like it was from a can. There is a white queso so I may try that because I'm not giving up that easily on this place since this is a Des Moines staple! We got to Tasty Tacos just before 1:00 pm on a Saturday. The line was to the door but moved quickly. We got the original flour tacos, a crispy taco and some tators supreme. The food came out quickly. It was hot and fresh. The tator supreme had tots, their beef, refried beans, and nacho cheese for $5.50. They have a queso version for a quarter more. I must say I'm loving the totcho craze, even if I do have to eat it with a fork. They were very tasty. I'd have liked a couple fresh ingredients like a pico or some other veggies. The tacos are classic and reliable. Always satisfying. The service is always good. I'd recommend a full time busser during busy times to keep tables open and clean.
