Conveniently located and in walking distance of several other hot spots in the area, including popular restaurants, Tate's offers an at-home vibe where I'm told you can lounge for hours and never grow tired of it. It makes sense why. The cocktails are delicious and made with care. The skilled bartenders clearly put a lot of heart and love into each concoction. On a whim just stopped in as we had time before dinner and I'm glad I re-introduced myself back to tastes after a long time. It's like a bar should be, lots of booze, variety, all their house made mixers, and bitters. And all the necessary cocktail fixings! I had a gin and tonic first , and they have the hard to find Empress gin! Win right there. My friend had their special of the day, a Manhattan. $7 on a Thursday. They have specials everyday. Great drinks, and let me say Garrett, the bartender was awesome, charming and knew his stuff! Then I tried a new to me drink, white Negroni, that Garett told me about, sounded intriguing so I thought why not. Came here a few weekends ago for a nightcap after hopping around a couple places earlier; This was definitely my favorite spot of the night, glad we ended on a high note. We arrived around 10pm on a Saturday- it wasn't too crowded and we were able to order and receive drinks pretty fast. there's an upper level but I didn't feel like carrying my drink up so we opted for a cozy sofa right against the wall. Its a dark, warm place with nice mood lighting. And the drinks- I really enjoyed! we got the dame blanche (cointreau, st germain, apple syrup, champagne, bitters) and winston cup (peanut bourbon, hot honey syrup, cream, coke). Reasonable, expected price point ($14/ea). A bit after settling in, things did seem to liven up a bit more, and some of the other patrons started singing and dancing. I have not been to Tate's in years, mostly because nobody I know goes there. But this past week I met a colleague there and enjoyed myself. There are four basic parts to this experience. I walked in and saw Angela bar tending... that's a plus plus! She is friendly and knowledgeable to say the least. As far a drinks I had a fig Manhattan, which was good but too sweet for me. It is made with figs (in some form), sweet vermouth, and old granddad. Adding an extra half-oz of old granddad helped quite a bit and I like my drinks strong anyway. I also had a shiner bock which is always good on draft. There is a wide representation of liquors on the shelves and plenty for all types. I need to go back for some of the excellent whiskey selection. I also tried the charcuterie plate, which was decent. It has a mix of pickled veggies, A few kinds of cured meat, olives, mustard, and bread. I wasn't impressed by the meat. Nothing wrong with it, but I have this stuff at home. The pickled cauliflower and brined cucumbers were great as well as the olives. Lastly the ambiance of Tate's has always been great. It is welcoming and classy without being inaccessible. read more

I live locally and had a few friends in town who have never been out downtown. After dinner we stopped in at tates and have NEVER received worse service... I think anywhere in my life. All of us being in the industry, we were pretty taken aback by the disgusting attitude from the bartender. We realized they were doing closing work and the bartender told us "only beer and shots." We were totally fine with that being we all had cocktails at dinner and were okay with drinking a beer and seltzer. When I asked the bartender what seltzers she had she told me white claw and topo Chico" I asked for the flavors and it was so incredibly clear she was annoyed by that. I then asked her "is everything okay.... Do you want us here?" She replied "are YOU good? do YOU want to be here?" And I said yeah we did but I'm confused on your attitude and she replied "actually you can leave" we were truly so confused on the the lack of customer service and the actual trash attitude we got from a bartender that clearly was not a wanting money or bar guest 45 minutes before closing. Hubby and I ventured to this place on Friday with another couple. Good music all night and friendly service from all staff. They have a craft cocktail menu on the bar, and the specials, beer and wine menus are on the wall. At first glance the bar feels masculine, because of all of the wood trimming kn the windows as you come in, but when you read the cocktail menu and the fact that they have a unisex and a women's restroom with hygiene products, hair ties and lotion let's me know that they are certainly a place for us ladies! We ordered a round of shots and decided to share the beautiful BlackBerry Julep for $12. The description says "boozy berries", but this was seriously a half of a cup of berries piled on top of the drink. I initially thought $12 was a bit pricey, but the generous berry serving and drink quality was worth the price. The drink is so tastey and refreshing and the berries weren't overly boozy. I will say that the drink is a bit sweet, so if you're not into sweet drinks this one's not for you. Needless to say, we enjoyed the drink so much, we ordered 3 more. The patio near the entrance was comfortable and inviting for people to interact. We will probably be going back soon!! read more

I'm a bit surprised that this place hasn't been reviewed yet, all the locals recommend it with a certain fervor and it's absolutely everything they make it to be. It's the "cool" spot on the 4th street drag, and for a town like Winston-Salem it's certainly a trendy place that seems to have been plucked right out of cities like Los Angeles or New York. It's not your snooty run-of-the-mill high end bar. Rather Tate's focuses on the lax atmosphere that Winston-Salem is naturally gifted with and plays upon it very well. They offer a massive variety of alcoholic beverages that is sure to please even the most discriminating of tastes. The bartenders know what they're doing and will gladly suggest a drink if you're having a hard time picking something. Tate's also has a sizable menu of food, but don't come here for a full dinner if you're starved. They make it very clear that the food is not a full meal, rather a sampling of appetizers, almost like a tapas restaurant would offer. I opted for the jalapeno-spiced two-step meatballs (quantity: 3) and a pulled pork slider. I didn't realize that the slider was just that: one slider, and a side of Frito's (corn chips). The food is delicious, definitely not enough for an eater like myself, but absolutely flavorful and presented in a truly aesthetically pleasing way. I'd recommend Tate's to anyone visiting Winston-Salem and looking for a place to have a drink, unwind, and lounge with a few friends. I've been to Tate's a handful of times now, and I'm always impressed! You can generally run into a decent sized crowd here, but I've never had trouble working my way through the crowd or getting to the bar to order a drink. There's music playing overhead but it's at a volume where you can tune it out if you'd prefer to just chat and hangout with your friends. And as far as drinks go, they have a pretty solid variety of beer as well as liquor. They also have pickle juice for the pickleback lovers out there. The bartenders have always been friendly and willing to chat about things other than your order, assuming there aren't too many people waiting. I feel like the bar is always appropriately staffed and there's never been a time where I've had to wait long to order. Overall, it's a nice vibe and worth a visit. I can't believe I have not reviewed Tate's before. I have been there a few times and have always enjoyed the interesting and thoughtful selection of cocktails. The bartenders here are mixologists and the area behind the bar looks a bit like a science lab, with containers of infused liquors and bitters and other flavorants for them to work with. In my most recent visit I had a Campari-based cocktail with a cedar-infused Campari. It definitely had a woodsy note to it. Just a little something extra to make the trip here worthwhile. My wife had a Pimm's Cup, which was tasty, although we were both a bit disappointed that they did not muddle the mint or cucumber and so none of those flavors became part of the cocktail. I loved my visit to Tate's last weekend. First, as others have mentioned, the crowd here rocks. There are dressed up gals out for a night on the town, casual guys in jeans and baseball caps who look like they came from a football game, older upper 30-somethings enjoying a fine beverage, and younger couples on dates sipping fancy beers. Coming from Richmond where the certain crowds go to certain places, it was really refreshing to visit a spot where it seemed like anyone was welcome and everyone was having a good time. Next, my boyfriend commented that he absolutely loved the music selection. Rocking out to old-school Biggie with a fine cocktail in hand? Yes please. Speaking of cocktails, hello awesome drink list! I got the blackbird julep, which featured chambord, citron vodka, lemon juice, simple syrup and "boozy berry compote." I loved that I was able to order this after 10 p.m. without the bartender giving me a dirty look for ordering something other than vodka-soda, cranberry, oj, etc. The drink itself was fabulous: refreshing and flavorful, but not too sweet or weak. I also was super pleased that "berry compote" meant a heaping helping of fresh strawberries, blueberries and blackberries, not just one or two rogue berries thrown into the mix. For an original cocktail concoction, I have to say this is probably one of my favorite cocktails ever, and I order off the fancy drink menu a lot. My girlfriend and I love going to Tates. The drinks are amazing and the atmosphere is comfortable and laid back. She absolutely loves the Blackbird Julep. I'm a gin kinda man and I haven't had a bad drink here yet. I will say, fellas, if you aren't comfortable enough with your masculinity, get a beer. You might end up drinking out of some pretty feminine glassware depending on what you order. But please, don't let this limit your choices. I've had some really good drinks here out of a martini glass with some fruity garnish hanging off the side and tipped it back like a boss. Just jump down and bang out a couple of pushups between drinks at the end of the bar and feel that testosterone come surging back! I'm not judging you, bro. The drinks are a bit expensive but they are made with love, fresh ingredients and they're super consistent. This is what a bar is supposed to be like. You can go to Tates knowing that your favorite drink is going to be made the same way and taste just as delicious as the first time you ordered it. Sure, you can go to Single Brother's on Trade for a little cheaper but I think Tates is more consistent. Don't get me wrong, I like Single Brothers for what it is but I prefer Tates. Love this place in the past haven't been in awhile. Went there tonight to see friends play music. Got there and was full. All chairs at the bar were taken so I stood drank my martini until someone paid their bill and left. I took that seat and ordered some more to drink a beer and some top shelf Irish Whiskey neat. I sit enjoying my drinks and then the band takes a break. I walk no more than 5ft. From my seat to talk to the band. I finish my conversation and go back to the bar to find some one in my seat and my drinks removed and discarded. I complained to the bartender and she was all" I thought you left" no "I am sorry we will take care of it immediately". No I get the manager with an attitude and he again acts like this is normal if you get up to talk or go to the bathroom we will just throw those drinks away. To review, I have an open tab, I move 5 feet away briefly then return to no seat and no drinks and the manager doesn't admit or feel this is abnormal. I have lived 68 years and been all over the place in many bars and I can say I have never had or heard of any one running into this situation. I must be a lucky guy. Well in the end they asked me to leave because I was unreasonable. You decide. The music was fantastic. read more

I love going to Tate's with my husband as it's the only place in Winston that has artisan cocktails, and the bartenders take great pride in their mixology skills. The only downside is the bathroom. My husband said that it was totally disgusting. I also wished they served food a little later. Now for the drinks, I had a raspberry fizz which is served with rock candy. Not only was it pretty, but it was delicious too. My husband had some bourbon that our bartender highly recommended. He also took the time to chip a cube of ice into a sphere for my husband's drink.
