Ok so Tate's is close to my house and I sometimes come here for breakfast. I would give it a 3.5 stars and it is definitely the best breakfast place in Portage. I normally just get a omelette or one of there skillets. Today I got Irishman omelette which is was a 3 egg omelette with corned beef hash paired with Swiss cheese. The omelettes with different options but I got hash browns and wheat toast. Gotta say this omelette was really subpar. The corned beef really tasted that it came out of a can even though I've heard they mad there own and the hash browns weren't really good either. I have had good omelettes here but the Irishman was not a very good choice. Overall I really do like Tate's the service is normally pretty good and so is the food. You get a decent breakfast for under ten bucks. They also give you huge portions for the price I just need to explore the menu a little more. read more

Worst experience I ever had there. Originally sat outside tree debris was falling all around asked to go inside the Sox fan (hostess) said sure grab your stuff. So me the customer grabbed the three drinks and silverware while she picked up the menus and moved inside Took a while then the waitress came to the table but she didn't know we were an additional table Cashing out with the hostess (same Sox fan) the only thing she said to me was " the top copy is mine". I will be telling everyone I know how terrible this experience was. So I won't be back, not even a to go order. Too bad I like their food read more

We came here on a very busy morning and were able to snag a patio table. Our waitress was a little behind you getting to us initially but it wasn't too bad. Our food came out hot and FAST! It was absolutely delicious! My plate was just enough, my friend's plate was more than he could finish. The price is not bad, the atmosphere is fun, and everyone was kind! As one commenter set, the place looks like a church. We drove by it our first time through as well. Went there at about brunch time. I ordered a Portage cheesesteak wrap instead of on the bun. It was very tasty, and quite sizable. Our other order was a turkey wrap with lettuce bacon, and tomato. One side option was tater tots which we did get and they too were good. The order came out promptly enough and the staff was nice and courteous. Would definitely recommend this to hungry travelers. read more

The service and food has never failed to be great but the portions they have greatly cut back on. A Panini and a few other sandwiches use to be a good hefty meal but they have since cut that the portion in half so it is a little less filling. read more

I used to love Tate's. I mean love it. Would go there for waffle fries and take friends there that were visiting from out of town. The food was great and the service was wonderful. Unfortunately, I'm going to have to stop going. The past few times I've been here I've been served sub-par food with dirty dishes. I forgave it the first two times it happened, as I went on a weekend during the morning when they were very busy. I was served coffee in a cup with lipstick on it...I don't wear, or own a tube of, lipstick...so it wasn't mine. I've had bad water spots on the silverware. Today was the last straw when I was given a spoon that had old food cemented onto it. We walked out, canceling our order. I just can't afford to go back, unfortunately. I can't risk getting sick from eating off of dirty dishes. The food quality has slipped as well. The biscuits and gravy are gross, with canned biscuits and powdered gravy. The grits are watery as well. Their desserts have slipped too, tasting like the generic stuff you get from the gas station. read more

We hit Tate's place on our way through Indiana when we wanted a sit-down place to grab some lunch. It was a hit. Big menu with several good wrap/panini options for vegetarians. All my reviews are harping on that topic lately, but this is our first summer on the road with a vegetarian in tow, and I sure appreciate it when other Yelp reviews share that kind of info. Sandwiches come with a choice of fruit (which was fresh, bountiful and well-presented) or fries (waffle or delicious sweet potato). Service was friendly, if not particularly speedy. The pies looked good; we were too stuffed to give them a try. People of all ages in here; families with kids and some retired people who greeted like regulars. Looks like Tate's participates in Restaurant.com--we noticed a patron using a certificate. If this were in our hometown, I'll bet we'd be regulars. For travelers, it's pretty convenient to the Tollway (I-90/I-80) as well as I-94--it's just straight down Willowcreek from the exits, on the left side. read more

Decent homemade breakfast. The servers were nice and the clientele seemed to be comprised of mostly regulars. Nothing fancy inside but clean and comfortable. I had driven past there multiple times before finding out it was a restaurant when looking for Portage breakfast spots online; the sign and building don't really look like a restaurant. Sophie's is located off of the Portage Bike Trail on Willowcreek road, It's a homey place, serving many dishes including an assortment of sandwiches, hamburgers, and house salads. The price of the meals will turn many casual diners away, a simple sandwich with fries can run upwards of $10 dollars, but the quality of the food is very high. One thing not to miss when eating at Sophies are the pierogies, they're made fresh in the restaurant and are incredibly delicious. Fillings include sweet cheese, potato, or sauerkraut and all are fried in copious amounts of butter. Overall, Sophies Kitchen is a nice homey place with an assortment of meals, but you can get most of their menu items at the same quality for a lower price at other restaurants. If anything, go there for the Pierogies. read more

The first thing I noticed about Tate's was how happy everyone looked. No customers were flagging down their servers, no one was grumbling about how long their food was taking and no one was sending dishes back. And for good reason! The menu was extensive and it took me awhile to even decide on something to choose. The servers were outgoing and helpful. Despite the fact that the place was full, no one looked frustrated or annoyed. The food was perfect. Large potions, fresh ingredients and the bread was outstanding. I never had to ask for anything. This is a wonderful little independent breakfast/brunch place! I've come here twice now on my way out to Michigan and everything we've tried has been delicious. The service is friendly and quick to make recommendations. It's just a few miles south of I-80 and well worth the detour. On the must try list is the homemade raisin cinnamon bread, which I believe might be made fresh and available on Saturday only. I found the menu to be priced more then fairly. The portions are hearty, and it's not the typical greasy spoon food that you often find for breakfast. We stopped at Tates at 2:30 on a Thursday in need of some good food after a long day on the road . We were not disappointed. The restaurant was empty and close to closing but we were greeted by a friendly staff. I had the Cobb salad which was composed of great fresh ingredients including really crispy bacon strips and a piece of homemade bread. My husband had the pork tenderloin with waffle fries . He said the sandwich was very good but not the best he has ever had . The waffle fries were well seasoned and cooked to perfection . Our server patiently waited for us to finish our meals despite the fact that it was closing time. She even offered a beverage refill for the road . There is no "culinary flair" as suggested in another review, but what you DO get here is a big American Breakfast in a mom and pop shop. Tate is the owner. Breakfast daily, late on Wednesdays. The staff here was so pleasant and the waitresses really had it together. This is the halfway stop for my sister in SWMich and me in Chicago, so we dont wait in lines. Thank God for the counter. Tate's is near my in-laws and they like to bring us here when we visit. It's a nice place with a "mom and pop" type vibe. We've only been on weekends and they're always busy, but the service is VERY quick. The waitresses are attentive but they don't hover. The food is pretty average... not bad, but not great. I ordered the cinnamon roll for the first time and was disappointed. It was huge but dry. Everything we had ate here was delicious, cheap, and served super quick! It was a nice ending to a little mini-vacation at the Dunes. I would recommend this place to anyone traveling through the area. The breakfast food was tasty and my coffee cup was never low. It reminded me of some local places I have been to in Indy. This is an all around great spot. Tate's is absolutely one of the best Breakfast/Brunch spots in the area. The staff is always welcoming, knowledgeable and more than willing to accommodate you however they can. The food is always fresh and prepared remarkably well. My husband and I were staying in Portage for the weekend and wanted to go to a local place for breakfast. I am SO glad I found this place on Yelp! The parking lot was full, which is always a good sign, but when we got in were seated immediately. I ordered the French toast and bacon, which was delicious! Someone would come by it seemed like every 10 minutes to see if I needed more coffee. I enjoyed it very much. Amazing service. My cup never emptied. Very friendly and family feeling. The food is the normal for a burger breakfast place, but very fast and just perfect taste. I was amazed at the quality of this place. Its smallish and there will be 10-15 min wait to be seated but trust me its worth it. The only thing less then great was the floor needed sweet up some.
