Tate's of Portage is a locally owned establishment only open for breakfast/lunch. Their food is reasonably priced and very good. Daily specials are offered as well. Stop by and enjoy! It can get quite busy for late breakfast/brunch on Saturdays/Sundays. I am reminded that they have a Wednesday dinner (evening) buffet (think) that I have had once. Generous portions and good food. During the warmer months, you can sit outside on the patio and watch the bikers on the bike trails. Very nice. If you bike, there is a place to park (lock) your bikes and come in and eat. Several have commented about the dining room and arrangement. I think it is just fine, not at all ornate, but certainly adequate. This location used to be called Sophie's Place. Don't think they have same menu as Sophie's did. Only one complaint: No WIFI. read more

I took my family here for breakfast one morning on our vacation. We got to sit outside on the deck, and the whole experience was wonderful. My wife ordered French toast, and I had a plate of eggs, bacon, and pancakes. The older kids got Mickey Mouse pancakes that they LOVED! We also ordered a huge fruit plate of melon, pineapple, grapes, oranges, and strawberries and the whole family gobbled it up. The staff were kind, and super helpful. My son accidentally spilled his milk ALL OVER the floor and two ladies came and cleaned it right up with smiles on their faces. The whole meal and the location were just very charming. The building looks like it used to be an old church or something. This is definitely a spot I would return for brunch if I'm in the area again. read more

A local recommended this place for a quick lunch. It is easy to miss as it looks like it used to be a church (I passed right on by). Plenty of parking and tables even though it seemed super busy during lunch. The food was just average to below average, but it hit all the high points for me otherwise. Fast and super friendly service, fast orders, ridiculously inexpensive, decent portions, and a large selection of homemade decadent desserts. I had their special for the day, the bacon cheeseburger wrap, because it sounded weird and I'm not one to shy away from something that sounds weird. I love this place. The food is great and at a good price point. The staff is great. The food comes quick. The only reason they get 4 stars is because of the eggs. When I order scrambled eggs, I want scrambled eggs. Not folded eggs. If I wanted folded eggs, I would order an omelette. Please cooking staff at Tate's Place, get out a skillet and take a fork and scramble the eggs. A folded egg is a different texture. I have to order a different type of egg other than scrambled. For Portage this is definitely a five star affair as a hometown mom and pop place. Portage is notorious for chain restaurants and very little original businesses. In fact I don't think I can count 5 non-chain restaurants in Portage. Tate's is decorated cute and cozy in a fall palate with a gorgeous fireplace in the center. I've only been here for lunch hours and have always been impressed with the lunch menu. Lot's of sandwiches, soups and salads as well as wraps, chops and what not too. I guess it's your typical american fare but with a bit of an upscale culinary twist, The sweet potato fries are to die for and the desert case always looks yummy but I've always been to stuffed from my meal. The location is great too, with a pretty outdoor dining area and situated right off the bike trails. Probably the best thing Portage has gotten in quite a few years. read more

Tucked away off a busy street is a very good mom and pop style restaurant where the casual dining does not mean casual service nor casual quality. The food is hot and tasty along with affordable. Service is consistently good regardless as to the busyness of the restaurant. Tate is the owner and one of the cooks so you know who to compliment. I have experienced both breakfast and lunch. This is one of the bright spots of Portage. First of all, they are located right off of the bike trail in Portage. I used to stop in on occasion and order lunch here after a 10 mile bike ride. Not a bad option considering the surrounding businesses. Secondly, their perogies are the best in the area, hands down!! Plus, they have Saturday morning karaoke for the locals...and trust me, they eat that shit up like honey! All of Portages finest come out and let loose. My Dad and I go here almost every weekend and it never gets old... never... this is a great place to go for breakfast! They have great food and I HIGHLY recommend the homemade cinnamon toast that they serve on weekends, seriously, I order whatever I can that comes with toast just so I can get it. Yes, it's that good. They do tend to get a little packed on weekends, but I've never had to wait more than 15 or 20 minutes. If you're looking for a good breakfast place in Portage, this is it! read more

Bad Experience at Tate's Place in Portage Today I (along with family) went to Tate's Place in Portage. My experience was not a good one and i won't be back. After being told "i don't know the soups or the lunch but your server will" then being informed they don't have soups or lunch specials due to closing at noon they put our order in. I took a look around the diner and noticed the floors. Notice the floor under the kitchen window behind me. While they were very well staffed not one staff member could clean. While they were very well staffed they could only be bothered to complain about a patron who ate a sandwich and didn't pay. And while our waitress was amazing their demeanor on FB and this was just bull. I refuse to go back to an establishment like that. And when i brought it up to their fb page instead of being asked to give them a second chance for a possibly better experience i was told "hope you have better luck at other places in Portage" what a joke this place is. We've gone to Tates for years, but today brings our experience to an end! After watching a waitress with auburn hair, parted down the middle, medium length, cut and handle cake and pie with her bare hands, lick frosting off her fingers, stick her fingers into her mouth, wipe her nose with her fingers, then serve diners without so much as a thought for washing her hands-that was it! Complained to cashier and another waitress-they would not say anything to the pig, "Not my place!" Asked for manager- "Not here!" Asked for phone number, "Don't have!" Love this place! Went there for the first time with a friend and It was amazing. I got the cheeseburger with waffle fries and I couldnt eat it all, portions were huge. I was expecting the bill to be in the twenties but only ended up being 17 for two burgers, two sides and two pops. I also love how clean the resturant is! The one thing I don't like is their weird hours.. but I will defiantly be going there more often! read more

This is a tough one to score but hopefully it helps. I've been to Tates two times now the first time was for breakfast and the food was really good. My only complaints was that the coffee kept coming cold and my silverware was dirty. That's not the only reason I'm only giving it two stars. the other reason is because the second time I went the coffee kept coming cold silver wear was dirty and the Sandwich I ordered was just disgusting(couldn't even finish half). The place is a bit run down but family-friendly, do Like that it is off of the bike path, so it's very handy to get to if you like to bike. So my advice if you go there check your silverware, don't try to order coffee, and breakfast is probably the best option. read more

I have been a regular here for over a year, about 2-4 times a week, and today was my last time ever coming here again. I never go out of my way to write reviews but my bad experience this morning made me feel indifferent. It is clear to me now that this owner clearly only cares about his money and not his customer's satisfaction. I placed an order this morning and mistakenly told the waitress wheat toast. I waited to see my waitress walking by 2 min. later to tell her I wanted rye. She nervously responded "uhh if they haven't already made it." My friends and I looked around at each other thinking what a bizarre response (all of us are servers in restaurants). She then came back to tell me it was already made and I asked if I could still get the rye toast, it's two slices of bread.... what is the big deal. To make a long story short, I ended up speaking with the owner who argued about the fact that it'd be a waste to throw out two slices of toast and doing stuff like that would essentially cause him to go out of business. LET ME ADD THAT THE OWNER NOR DID THE WAITRESS EVER APOLOGIZE FOR AT LEAST THE INFLEXIBILITY OF THEIR RESTAURANT. I could honestly understand if I changed my whole entire entree after they already made it, but it was toast. And the way the owner handled the situation was very selfish. The Portage House of Pancakes owner would have never told me I had to purchase food I did not want. Especially not to a regular, which PHoP owner would of known me as, since he actually engages with his customers. I rather give my money to a restaurant that appreciates their guests. Very tacky. I stopped here with my mother and grandmother after visiting my grandfather newly relocated at the nursing home down the street. It had been a tough day for all of my family, and Tate's was a great relief. We stopped on Wednesday when they do a buffet. They had home cooked-style ham, italian beef, fried chicken, gnocchi, fried shrimp, salad, bread, various desserts and more... Comfort food to the max. There did seen to be some hiccups with the staff (who was taking care of what and where - like no one being at the cash register for people to pay). Nice family style diner. Went for lunch and it was decently busy. Was able to sit right away and the service was good. Ordered the tomato basil soup and the tomato wedge? I forget the name, but it was chicken salad on top of a cut out tomato. Chicken salad was a good portion and very tasty. Was served with side of fruit.
