Rather than chain, restaurants or fast food places that you can find anywhere in the world, I typically try to find a local place to support. I was in Pell city visiting a customer and stopped in at Tavern at the Saint Clair for lunch. I ordered a blackened chicken sandwich and collard greens. Both were fantastic! Jerry, who mentioned that he is one of the sous chefs told me a little bit about the place. This is a scratch kitchen for just about everything on the menu. Place was very nicely, decorated and clean, the staff was all very friendly, and of course the food was very, very good! Absolutely horrible experience. I give places at LEAST three times before I say I'll never dine there again. And THEN still reach out and see how management handles it. Just know they failed miserably on more than one occasion in every facet. We had reservations this past Sunday for Mother's Day and my Dad's birthday. Three families walked in - without a reservation - and were seated before we were. We stood at the hostess's podium area for 15 minutes then left. We went with some family friends for a nice dinner out and chose Tavern. We waited outside with drink while waiting on a table. Nice night and nice way to wait. Once inside it's a lot of tables jammed into a room so not an easy feat having conversations without competition. The ambiance is underwhelming IMO, but not bad. Door was good and so was the service. Honestly I'm glad there is a "nice" place in Pell City but it's not going to blow you away. Overall I'll give it 4 stars because it's not 3, but closer to 3.5 to be honest. read more

I've been here twice now. The Tavern side when they first opened and the St. Clair side last night. The Tavern side was packed, as expected since they just opened. My girlfriends and I ordered drinks and the smash burger. Everything was really good. Last night we ate on the St. Clair side and was really impressed. It's more intimate and upscale. The menu was different than the Tavern side and offered Italian food. I was really impressed that the meat they use is beef. Most Italian is sausage and I don't eat port. Our server, Clayton, was outstanding. We ordered the bruschetta to start with and I got the Lasagna and Cesar salad and my date got the seafood pasta. I can't say enough about how good the food was. I'm from California where the food is amazing and since moving to Alabama, I just think that food is boring and lacks culture. This establishment is a combo Sport's Bar/ Cozy Dining Spot! Can be little noisy but also at times allows for a romantic evening. Prompt seating by the hostess and the interior was very clean and comfortable seating abounds. Menu was concise but extensive enough to offer choices for most any taste. I had the scallops and grits! Scallops were prepared perfectly and they can be a challenge at times. Grits were tatsy. My date had a salmon salad with fresh greens and she enjoyed them. Our server was very attentive but not intrusive into our faces which allowed us to talk and get acquainted with each other! Overall my thoughts were a nice dining experience! Popped in for brunch today. It was a pleasant surprise. The waiter was friendly and attentive. I was there alone and my entire visit took about 30 minutes, i believe he came over 4 or 5 times. The moment my water was empty he was there with a refill. It wasn't crowded but i came in very early so i imagine it gets much busier after lunch. I got the shrimp and grits, the flavor was much better than i expected. The grits are hearty, and the shrimp was cooked to perfection. The cost of my meal was $25 so i would imagine if i was on a date and had an appetizer and maybe a cocktail it would have cost closer to $100. However the food is worth the price you pay. The beef short ribs with collards and grits was outstanding - great combination! The St Clair salad was a great mix of ingredients and flavors. The warm chocolate torte dessert was perfect - smooth texture, rich taste but not overly filling. Our only criticism was that the halibut was dry - probably slightly overcooked? - and the variety of radishes were a good idea but very hard and difficult to cut or chew. I am so excited to have a restaurant like the tavern at the Saint Clair in Pell City, Alabama. Usually, we have to drive a distance for a nice sit down restaurant, so I was very excited when this restaurant opened. There are actually two restaurants in one, and per se. One side is a fancier restaurant called the Saint Clair. And the other side is the tavern at the Saint Clair, which has a more laid-back atmosphere I've eaten at the tavern at the Saint Clair multiple times and each time it has been delicious. The servers are attentive and the food is great. there is also a full-service bar that serves delicious and unique cocktails. They also serve a Sunday brunch that is absolutely delicious. Since recently moving back to the area I had noticed this restaurant just off exit 158 a few times in route to a friend's place on Logan Martin. Finally had a chance to visit and just Wow !! The food is amazing, so much so that we've since returned twice already ! We've had the 16oz ribeye, 158 smash burger , shrimp and grits , tavern steak bowl, fried green tomatoes and caesar salad. This is more of a 3.5 star review... In town for the holidays and my mother made a reservation for the Tavern side of the St Clair since it was the day after Thanksgiving and we assumed it'd be packed. Sure enough, nearly every table was full. The first issue came when the hostess said they didn't have a reservation for us even though it was made several days prior. Thankfully there was a table available. When our waiter arrived, he was nice. Didn't share any specials, but I don't think there were any. He also didn't tell us what all they were out of, so we were disappointed after we settled on appetizers to find out we couldn't get what we wanted. My husband and I split the fried green tomatoes with shrimp. This was a very odd dish. The tomatoes with the bacon/onion jam on top were good. The shrimp added in would've been fine MINUS the chimichurri sauce. The flavors just didn't mesh. That sauce tasted great but not with a sweet bacon/onion jam. My parents had the Cajun baked oysters and said there was zero Cajun flavor in the dish. My husband thought his smoked old fashioned was good. I had the Paloma 75 and it was terrible. I ended up sending it back because it was the saltiest thing I've ever drank. It was odd to me that the rim was heavily salted for a drink consisting of grapefruit, Prosecco simple syrup and lemon. I had the prime rib sandwich with collard greens. Both were good. My mother's scallops and pasta were phenomenal. My dad's prime rib was mostly a large slab of fat, very little meat and definitely not worth the $60. My husband's hanger steak was very tender, but I felt like it lacked seasoning. Overall, the food was decent, but definitely some things I wouldn't ever get again. Our waiter didn't come by very often, so we relied more on the girls clearing our plates to get the random things we needed. The overall ambiance of the place is nice (a welcome addition to Pell City!), but it's VERY loud and makes it difficult to have a conversation. 3.5 stars for the miscues with the food/drinks and less than attentive waiter. Looking forward to trying the St. Clair side on our next visit. read more

We thought the Tavern would be a good place to try. One of my friends has very specific allergies to certain foods. The said they could accommodate his needs. The only thing they could fix him was a new York strip steak at $39. The steak had a lot of fat and bristle. The tast was not good for a $39 steak. Another person had the chickens parm and it was just spaghetti with a heated up breaded chicken breast thrown in. I had the wedge salad and added chicken. I asked for no blue cheese crumbles or blue cheese dressing. I opted for vinegarette dressing. 1st my salad came out with blue cheese all over it and blue cheese dressing, I sent it back. The grits tasted as though they had maple syrup in them. And for $34, I got three scallops which I ruined by pouring the sour Beurre Blanc on them, which tasted as though it was melted , smelly, tangy brie cheese. My dinner partner had a tough, undercooked 8oz baseball cut sirloin with three tiny stalks of aparagus. We passed on dessert. We had family fly in from Boston to visit us for the Memorial Day Weekend. We took them all to dinner on Friday May 23rd. The servers that night were Jen and Clay, and even Jeremy the Sous Chef, was also on hand helping the wait staff and delivering food to the tables (in addition to cooking) The service was five stars, along with the food. The Tavern is a small, clean restaurant with a chic, upscale atmosphere. Our party was looking forward to Prime Rib Sandwiches for lunch but was sorely disappointed when ordering as the restaurant's supply was depleted before noon. It would have been nice if the waitress had shared that information when telling about the specials, before my father, husband, and son had their heart set on the meal. My husband was hoping to enjoy an Arnold Palmer, but again there was no lemonade. The chicken sandwiches and wings ordered in place of prime rib were overcooked and extremely dry. The wings were also overcooked, and with only 2 flavor options were not enjoyed.
