We had a totally excellent meal for our last night in Rome. Francesco, our server was patient to inquire about our taste buds and recommended some great treats. First, it was the hot cows cheese, delicious. Then the vegetable tray with zucchini, artichokes, eggplant and more, perfect. We settled into our seats and enjoyed a simple pasta dish with a generous serving of shaved truffles. We finished the meal with a traditional Italian biscuit and a muscat aperitif. My son and I really enjoyed the duck breast and honey that we had to order a second plate. We also put the honey on the focaccia bread....sooo good! One of great hidden gems. It's hard to quantify what makes a meal great. It could be simple food prepared excellent. It could be a genuine smiling host/owner who knows his cuisine. It could be a rather intimate restaurant that feels lively, without being busy and noisy. It could be attentive wait staff. Rarely, do these all come together. This is the rare case where all these are on the money. And not just once, but repeatable. And reasonably priced...our group of 4 had a couple plates of appetizers, 2 bottles of vino, main courses, and deserts. All under 200 Euro. We ordered meals that featured the specialty of the house, black truffle. The truffle is freshly sliced and added to plate at your table. If you're used to "truffle oil" or "truffle infused" dishes, you will be pleasantly surprised by the freshness and "lightness" of this fungi. Not overpowering, but the absolute star. We met a cute couple from Melbourne last night that sat next to us who also enjoyed the Black Truffle and could not believe how well executed every dish was. It's November and white truffles season. When in Rome..... Can say enough good things about this place. Francesco took great care of us. It's a small restaurant and has a real family vibe. No wine list so you go to this wall with bottles of wine and pick one. The Sangiovese Francesco recommended was perfect for our meal. As you can see from the pictures this is the place to be if you are craving truffles like I was. Finished the meal with one of the best Panna cotta I've ever had (with truffles!) and a limoncello. My dinner partner had a white port instead of limoncello and said even better (as he's not a fan of limoncello) So many things to try in Rome so might run out of meals before I come back. After seeing several mentions of Taverna Lucifero within reviews for our hotel (the Hotel Indigo St. George), I was happily surprised to see such stellar reviews on Yelp. We made a reservation for a Wednesday night and walked over from our hotel. We were warmly greeted by the owner and given options on where to sit. We settled on a back corner booth where we could see all of the restaurant and the passerby's on the street outside. Once seated, we got two menus: one of restaurant offerings and another of items that could be coated in truffles. We ordered buffalo mozzarella, Parma ham, grilled veggies, tagliolino pasta with truffles, and filet steak with truffles and rosemary potatoes. The appetizers were good but the pasta and fillet were terrific and worth the five stars. The truffles were freshly grated table side and wonderful with every bite. We were taken to the wine room and offered assistance in picking a wine to go well with what we ordered. We got a Barolo by Rocca Giovanni that was absolutely stellar. It perfectly paired with our food. We also ordered tiramisu, which was super yummy. Some limoncello was offered followed by delicious dessert wine. When we went to pay the bill, we were pleasantly surprised that several items were on the house. The gesture was greatly appreciated. Best meal we had in Italy! It's a small and cozy spot. We had our hotel make a reservation for us and we are glad they did. It was very busy. The owner is fun and will give strong suggestions for ordering. We got cheese with different flavored honey along with a vegetable appetizer. Both were wonderful but they cheese and honey blew me away. But in the end my main course stole the show. The truffle pasta was so incredible! Very simple pasta dish with truffles shaved right on it! I hesitate writing a good review because I selfishly don't want Taverna Lucifero to be too booked when we return to Rome! This place was fantastic and exactly what a meal in Italy should be - not too complicated and absolutely delicious. Much has been said about the truffle dishes which were fantastic, but I'd also recommend their vegetable dishes which were also very good. The restaurant also struck that unusual balance of being nice enough for a romantic dinner but comfortable enough that you felt like you were visiting family with service that was attentive and super friendly. Outstanding service and quality. Every time we visit Rome we always stop here. The truffle entrées are out of this world and the wine selection is great as well. The best appetizer, in our opinion, is on the bottom of the page (duck meat on bread w truffle honey). We also enjoyed the variety appetizer plate with various meats and vegetables. My wife had a white pasta with mushrooms and white truffles added, I had a beef dish with potatoes. The latter was what amounted to an Italian pot roast with LOTS of gravy. In the future I will try a pasta or perhaps just a glass of wine and the appetizers. On the weekends; Go Early (~6pm) or make a reservation. Otherwise you will be turned away. read more

An honest way to quantify the deliciousness of a dish is by its burp profile. For example, an hour after eating the Tagliolino Truffle pasta, on top of eating what felt like 5lbs of their meat fondue dish, my burps still tasted like the truffle pasta and it was glorious. Come here for this. They are the most generous place when it comes to the amount of fresh truffle they shave on their dishes. Tip: let the pasta rest with the truffle for a few min before digging in. This gives the pasta some time to soak in the truffle goodness and makes the dish so much more flavorful. We also tried the shaved meat dish which is essentially an Italian hot pot - they give you a pt of broth over a fire in which you cook your meat. This was good for a few bites but after a while it was just too much meat for us, so I might skip this for another dish. Their tiramisu was also delicious. Their service was also superb - super nice staff! Definitely coming back here when I visit Rome again! read more
