    Eggplant croquettes

Finally got here and this instantly became one of our very favorites in Rome. The fried gnocchi in pecorino sauce was amazing, but to me the biggest stars of the apps were the incredible eggplant croquettes and absolutely perfect anchovies in olive oil. On the pasta front, the cacio pepe here is probably our favorite anywhere, and the gricia is definitely near the top of the list -- comparable in terms of quality to the one we had at Tavernaccia the night before, but with crispier guanciale. We also got a margherita pizza, but we'd probably skip that next time.

This was my favorite restaurant in Rome. I highly recommend the deep fried gnocchi in cacio e pepe sauce. That dish alone was perfection. The pastas were excellent, as well as the fish and deep fried eggplant fritters. Everything we ordered was delicious. Make sure you have a reservation. The service is friendly and you know the food is authentic with the heavy presence of locals.

Delicious food. Although the restaurant was packed and a bit stuffy and hot. Friendly service, close to train to take you to downtown Rome

Trattoria Da Cesare al Casaletto 01-18-2020

Placed on the itinerary of travelers visiting The Eternal City by both Eater and "A Pasta Lover's Guide to Rome," Trattoria Da Cesare al Casaletto resides in an apartment block distant from the rest of Rome's great eateries, this and the "by phone only" reservations policy assuring mostly locals lining up for traditional fare in a large but stark dining room. Known simply as "Da Cesare" to many, and closed Wednesday but otherwise open from 12h45 to 15h00 for lunch plus 19h45 pm to 23h00 pm for dinner, it is primarily by bus or Uber that guests make way to Rome's Monteverde Nuovo neighborhood, this particular evening finding nearly every indoor seat packed as temperatures were too cold for the patio. Lacking central Rome's cobblestone, wider streets and a sizable park giving the surrounding are a distinctly more residential feel, it is once seated that servers present with convivial charm, English-fluency limited but made less necessary by translated menus. Dubbed by one local writer as "the perfect Trattoria" back in 2012, a bare-bones building with bright lights placing diners' focus on Food and conversation, it is from Fritti, Pizza, Primi and Secondi that guests may choose to build their meal, affordable Wines also highlighted such as €4 for a particularly generous pour of Prosecco. Built on classics, but ranging widely enough to please most palates, one will quickly notice most tables enjoying good Bread while debating options, the Gnocchi Fritti frequently following with fried Dumplings swimming in a pool of what amounts to Cacio e Pepe Fondue. Refined without feeling "stuffy," the servers seemingly everywhere at once despite lengthy expediting times, Pizza comes on a crisp but forgettable Crust while Pastas allow diners to select their own Noodle and Sauce combination, such as thin Ribbons of Fettuccine slicked with Egg Yolk and Pork Jowl in the case of good Carbonara. Leaving the Egg out of square-cut Tonnarelli, a dry Noodle cooked al dente, flavors leaned a bit too salty in Da Cesare's alla Gricia while Hunter's style Veal got lost amongst Olives and Garlic, thus raising Coda alla Vaccinara's stock as the better Secondi.

Ravioli with pork/bacon and what tasted like carbonara sauce

Our first night in Rome, we were excited to go to an "authentic Roman trattoria." I always seek out places off the tourist path.. We felt unwelcome from the moment we walked in (though we had reservations). No greeting when waiter came to our table. When our order was taken, we chose the type of pastas we wanted, but were told our choices were "not possible," so we ordered what the waiter said was possible; however, he also failed to take down our order correctly. One of us ordered cacio e pepe, but it came out as another carbonara. (Frankly, the ravioli that was ordered also tasted like carbonara). And it was not very good carbonara-thick, salty and too rich. We then had to flag down the waiter (who never came to check up on us after the initial food delivery) to ask about our vegetable side dishes. Well, we were told those "come out last"? Side dishes after the meal ...OK..We've been eating in multiple Italian cities for the past week, greeted by cheerful, helpful people and eating delightful meals. This is our first bad experience- both food quality and service. It seems that "Authentic Roman" has a meaning different from what I thought.

While visiting Rome, my family and I stopped here to have lunch for the day. We were looking forward to pizza, but pizza is only served for dinner. So I decided on this beef pasta, I can't remember the name. I wasn't too crazy about it but it was alright. The service was great though, very friendly and helpful waitresses. Although some don't speak English, they still try very hard to serve you the best they can. Props to them! Which is why I will give 4 stars.

Quintessential Italian Trattoria. Fantastic. Delicious. Trattoria Da Cesare will blow your tastebuds away with their classic, savory plates. Everything we tried honors the Italian gastronomy: good quantities of food full of love and filled with deep, natural flavors. Truly a remarkable experience. The Antipasti (Polpette, Totani fritti and Bruschetta di Pomodoro) were amazing. Their great flavors prepared us to the most stellar part of the meal: the Pastas (Amatriciana and Cacio e Pepe). I dare to say that any pasta you order here will be deliciously memorable. The Panna Cotta was also delicious. 5 star experience. Da Cesare is perhaps among my two favorite Roman restaurants. In me, they have found a loyal foodie. I will return to this restaurant many, many times.

We had a wonderful experience here. The food was absolutely delicious and the service was very professional. They are very knowledgable and professional when it comes to food allergies. It was so refreshing to finally have a real dessert, since I am allergic to egg, gluten, and nuts. What I also loved about this restaurant is that they are not located in the center or anywhere near those tourist traps. Make sure to always make reservation because they are always full, which is a good thing.

We specifically sought out a dinner at Da Cesare while we were in Rome and I was not at all disappointed by the food! Atmosphere and service-wise, it wasn't anything remarkable but the food was so good that it didn't even matter. We started with the fried eggplant and gnocchi. The former was one of the best things we ate in Italy. Crispy on the outside, yet somehow so soft and delicate on the inside. The gnocchi was certainly good, but afterward, I wished we would have skipped it because it was a bit too heavy and filling before our pasta entrees. I ordered the rigatoni alla gricia and it was possibly the best dish I ate in Rome. It was just perfect. Finished our meal with the panna cotta and it was just ever-so-slighty sweet in the best way. I would highly recommend this place!

Fried gnocchi in a pecorino cheese and black pepper sauce

Our meal at Cesare al Casaletto is something that made our trip to Rome undeniably unforgettable. Reservations are highly encouraged! From our hotel, it was a 4-mile walk (the last mile of which is up a hill), but we didn't mind, as we wanted to build up our appetite; however, if you don't want to walk, you can easily take the #8 tram to the last stop on the line and Cesare will be less 100 meters away when you get off. The entrance is a bit hidden behind a gate and some shrubbery. As we opened the gate, we were met with a very cute outdoor garden area with a slew of tables. The dining room isn't particularly large, with enough seating for approximately 50, but the seating was cozy in the best possible way. Most of the tables were set up for 4+ diners and as our 2+ hour meal went on, we were surrounded by a plethora of Italian families. No tourists in sight! We ordered a 1/2 liter of the house white, which was a blend of Bombino/Malvasia/Trebbiano (€4 = $4.50). The incredibly well-priced white wine was light and refreshing, very drinkable. Adam took one look at the menu and decided that he wanted an order of the fried calamari (€9 = $10) to start. I can't remember the last time I had such perfectly-fried calamari. The seafood was incredibly fresh and the batter was so light. A spritz of lemon was all that was needed to brighten up the dish. We gobbled this up quickly! I had read online a number of great things about the fried zucchini blossoms stuffed with mozzarella and anchovies (€2.50 = $2.80 per piece). We chose to go with one piece each and, again, found the batter very light with the stuffing of mozzarella working well with the salinity from the anchovies. There were also rave reviews online for the fried gnocchi in a pecorino cheese and black pepper sauce (€6.50 eur = $7.30), so we ordered a plate! However, once we ordered the rest of our food, our server mentioned that it might be too much food; thus, he suggested we order just a half portion of the gnocchi. Fine by us! While it wasn't on the menu, we were happy for the suggestion when we saw the size of the half portion. The gnocchi were freshly fried and a swipe through the pecorino cheese and black pepper sauce was heaven. Not a light dish by any stretch of the imagination, but very unique and something we couldn't stop eating. If only we brought a couple of friends with us, because we read rave reviews of the polpette di bollito con pesto (fried meatballs made from boiled meats) and the polpette di melanzane (fried eggplant-balls with a spicy, smoky tomato sauce), which every other table ordered in addition to the other the dishes that we started with. But, knowing that it was time to move on to the primis and secondis, we knew it would be ridiculous for two people to have 5 appetizers. I mean, we've done it, but that day we just decided we shouldn't. Plus, none of the appetizers we had chosen, as well as the two we didn't, were particularly light. Knowing we would we moving on to more carbs and meat, we had to draw the line somewhere. Anyways, I digress, Adam selected the Tonnarelli all'Amatriciana (€9 = $10) as his primi and what a winner it was! I still dream about this pasta. The sauce was rich and super complex, but the real star was the pasta itself. A unique, Lazio-native square-shaped pasta with a hole in the middle, the tonnarelli is made in-house and was a perfect vehicle for the sauce. I had decided on one of the daily specials, the fish soup (€8 = $9), as another appetizer. However, our server kindly informed me that it was more of a primi since it had pasta in it. The fish soup was chock full of fish and had a very clean seafood broth. Compared to Adam's tonnarelli, which had very bold flavors, my soup tasted almost bland. On it's own, I really enjoyed the soup, but paired against the pasta, the clear winner was the pasta. Another daily special we ordered was the Bucatini all Gricia (€10 = $11.25), which consisted of artichokes and bacon in a rich butter sauce. The pasta was again fantastic. Perfectly al dente pasta with bacon adding a level of smokiness and fresh artichokes contributing a lightness to the dish. While not as memorable as the tonnarelli, this was still an incredibly well executed dish. We decided we should try one of the secondis and opted for the oxtail in tomato sauce (€11 = $12.30). We were very pleased on this choice, as the meat was flavorful and tender to the point of falling off the bone. The tomato sauce had a delicate balance of sweet, savory and sour that made me want to pick up the plate and lick it clean. For the rest of the review: http://adamandvivian.com

My family and I started with the prosciutto and buffalo goat cheese served with oil and pepper, which was my favorite part of the entire meal. We also ordered a pretty good vegetable lasagna, a chicken dish with a delicious sauce, and two gnocchi dishes, including a carbonara-style one. Everything came out quickly, and there were unique items displayed around the restaurant that you could try and buy, which made the experience even more fun. We were so full from the appetizer that we only ate about half of the gnocchi. The owner noticed and kindly refunded those dishes, saying we should not pay for something we barely touched. That level of thoughtfulness is rare and left a huge impression on us. Overall, Masto is an amazing restaurant with fantastic food, quick service, and some of the kindest staff you will ever meet.
