This is an amazing restaurant you must try in Rome. The mom is the chef and son, Frederico is a kind and funny server. There are not too many tables but the ambience is intimate and beautiful. If you have to eat gluten free, like me, you can have anything on the menu, except for three items. I had the pork dish created by Julius Caesar's chef. It was tasty and the right size portion. We came here based on a recommendation for our last night in Italy and while the food was delicious the service was a bit strange. We were greeted by the very friendly son of the chef and seated right away since we had a reservation. Once we picked our menu items, chatted with the chefs son a little bit, it felt as though our table got forgotten about. The restaurant was filled with patrons of a food tour with tables turning over about every 30 minutes or so. We were very confused by the change in attitude towards us, which seemed to change once they learned we were American. The ambiance was quaint but quite noisy and crowded with the tour groups. Stopped in here on a whim, because our original pick Roma Sparita was reservation only and they did not let anyone else in. So we found this place, little non-descript door with a beautiful vine surrounding it and a small sign with the name. Walked in and they had a few opens tables for 2. The Owner/Chef was in the dining room personally. He informed us that all the food coming out of the kitchen was cooked by his mother!! How cool. We saw they had cacio e Pepe and had to try it. So we had 2 orders of the pasta, a cheese plate for an appetizer, and finished off with the Coffee Tiramisu. The pasta was so fresh and delicious. The cheese plate was a generous portion and the Tiramisu was to die for. There was nothing bad we tried. 74 euro for 2 people and you can't be mad at that!! I asked the host/owner, Francesco, what the one dish he recommended that I try to best appreciate the food that he, his mama, and his wife have been serving at this restaurant for 30 years. He obliged by surprising me with a beautiful bowl of carbonara. As I began enjoying it, Francesco returned to check on me and I gave him a smile and nod of approval. To my surprise, he shook his head, held a finger up instructing me to stop, and walked off. He returned a minute later with two forks which he used to toss my pasta with the appropriate vigor that I lacked. Once Francesco was done, he gestured as if to say, "NOW it's ready." And he was right, it was ready, and it was a perfectly creamy emulsification of all of the flavors you expect in a carbonara--just so much better. That anecdote encapsulates the experience my family and friends had at Spirito DiVino last Thursday. Francesco was an extraordinarily gracious host, answering our questions, suggesting a must-try wine that had to be among the most affordable among the thousands of bottles the restaurant has in its wine cellar, and making our kids feel like they were as welcome as the adults were. It's a small thing, but when you're trying to enjoy the cuisine of Italy with 3 kids between 5 and 8 years old, it goes a long way. The hospitality that Francesco showed was only surpassed by the quality of the food prepared by his mama and wife. No offense to Francesco, but the food was definitely the highlight of the evening. Everything we tried, from the tripe, pâté, and cacio e pepe, to the carbonara was memorable. However, the star of the night was probably the short pasta with white sauce and truffle. It was a perfectly balanced combination of flavors that had everyone at our table (and at other tables) raving. Spirito DiVino was the best meal we had in Italy by far and one of the best meals I can remember in a long time. We've talked about it every day on the trip and compared every other meal to it--with all others falling some distance short. I could not recommend this restaurant more, and I'm amazed that we were able to just walk in and find a table for 7 available at 8 PM on a Thursday. We were certainly lucky that evening, but it's best not to leave things to chance so for our last night in Italy we have made reservations to come back and see if our second experience can live up to the first. read more

1st Night in Rome going on a recommendation of a friend, we venture via Uber to a small non descript section of Rome for our 1st dinner. We arrive and if you aren't looking for this place you won't find it. Nestled on a cobblestone road with no real markings we arrive to a charming little place greeted by the owner / chef who says sit anywhere there is a two top. 1st thing is he takes us down to the wine cellar, 2000 plus years old where he asked what type of wine we like, then brings us to the area where we he chooses one for us. Dusty old wines charming ambiance just great stuff. Wine is perfect then proceed to the food. 1st dish is a special, short pasta with buffalo Ricotta cheese topped with black truffle shavings. I could have stopped there because that was a 12 on the 10 scale. House bread was ok. Momma & His wife were in the kitchen as the owner shuffled between host, chef & waiter. Entrees were simply ok a sliced beef in a spicy red sauce was more like shredded beef, while the lean pork was a bit tough. We skipped dessert. All & all charming place, not a real tourist trap, should have stayed with the Pasta. Wine cellar alone is worth the trouble. Not overly expensive & the owner & staff were great. read more

So disappointed.... had been there a few months ago to celebrate my sister's birthday. Friend who had been there a few years ago highly recomeneded...slow food, chef, service and wine cellar history. Had a lovely meal and chef's son/manager was welcoming and even sent us home with a bottle of wine. We ate here in June of 2019 on our family vacation. There were a total of seven of us including our five kids ranging in age from 12 to 18 (there are twins in there). With prior reservations seating was prompt and not a problem. We found this family owned and operated restaurant to be among the best we've ever tried in our trips to Rome. I'm not sure I would call it a "family restaurant" in the sense that it has more of an upscale adult vibe and atmosphere to it but, having said that, the staff couldn't have been friendlier, nicer or more accommodating. The owner's son came to our table wearing his toque and sat with us for a long while talking to the kids about our vacation and joking around with them. The food was amazing and the menu well curated and varied. It specializes in ancient and classic Roman cooking using locally sourced seasonal ingredients. Everyone was very pleased with their selections from each course of their meal. The presentation was great, the service was excellent and the whole experience was fenomenal. If you enjoy wine, the restaurant features a wide variety of offerings from their ample wine cellar the owner claims is older than the Colosseum and which everyone is invited to explore. The bottom line: if you have a more sophisticated palate and enjoy upscale food in a mature but not stuffy environment then you will love this restaurant. This indeed was a sweet visit. I came for dessert and the wine which were a perfect ending to my evening. The dessert hit the spot so very rich and decadent, paired perfectly with a rose wine. This alone should bring you here but there is more. You can find century old Hebrew writing on a column outside of the back door. Inside, stairs take you down to a cave like ancient wine cellar. The oldest synagogue in the world with all four walls still intact. Older than the coliseum. That's what they told me and I believe everything I am told. The food is different from your usual flare of pizza-pasta-calzone-gnocchi-panini, I was craving steamed side of veggies, beef steak here is the best, great selection of wines (stored downstairs in centuries-old wine cellar). Francesco told us a story of the building that used to be the oldest synagogue in Rome, that certainly elevates your experience a notch. We selected one of the Reds from reserve collection (I don't remember which wine exactly), and it was good (dry). Perhaps a Pinot? Coming from CA, I know my wines well and this Italian one did not disappoint. At the end of our meal, Francesco brought us a complimentary bottle of another red, which was almost just as good as the reserve. Our party selected, among other dishes, chicken liver pate, vegetable cocotte, Jewish style chicken meatballs, some kind of ancient recipe beef dish that I don't remember the name of, everything was so tasty. It really doesn't matter what you pick from the menu - you're going to enjoy it. One star for decent food + decor (though comparable to all the other restaurants in the area). But why just one star? Because the service was appallingly sexist and rendered to please a man, who they mistakingly assumed would be paying. As a gal who eats out every night and consistently travels every few weeks for work and play, trust me when I say this was the most sexist service I've ever received in all my years and I'm generally pretty oblivious. Honestly, this was so obvious that I feel the need to write about it. An older gentleman came over to our table (where I sat with my boyfriend) and asked how we heard about the place. He said he checks the ratings every night as it's important to him. Then, he proceeded to speak only towards the man I was with, meanwhile completely dismissing me --a woman-- even as I tried to add a few nice comments ... he spoke over me and didn't even look at me. Later, he came back for another chat and continued to speak only to my partner, again not even looking me in the eye and acting as if I was invisible. After a friendly female waitress served our dinner, as dessert came, that elderly gentleman came back and put the plate down on my side and proceeded to slide the plate away from me and across the table to my boyfriend, and I'm not kidding when he said "ahhh, you're the man of this table, therefore you *must* try the dessert first". I literally couldn't believe what I was hearing and seeing. When the bill came, a male chef handed it to our table and literally said (no joke) "in Rome, women are not allowed to pay, it's always the man" and handed it straight to my boyfriend. To his surprise I responded "Actually sir, I will be paying." The chef came back and opened the bill, and when he saw it was actually my credit card he raised his eyebrows as if ashamed. Then he started speaking to the both of us as if I was suddenly present. Surprise surprise. Later before we left (and we were the last guests to leave), he handed me a bottle of wine as a "gift". Was it a gift or perhaps an obvious apology to absolute blatant sexism I experienced the entire night to avoid me writing a poor review? I'll let you guess. Either way, I'm not a fool. Big props to our female waitress though, who while sampling the wine politely asked "who will be trying the first sip?" ... it seems it was only the male staff who obviously had no manners here. read more

Bad idea. My first hint that this would not be a real "Roma" experience was when all the customers were American. My knife cut through it like butter and it melted like butter in my mouth! His pork shoulder was so flavorful, my bf absolutely loved it! We were greeted and seated immediately and our group Of 4 were beyond impressed. The restaurant is owned by a family- father is the host, mother is he chef and son is the server. They have expanded vastly with about 7 tables in total, and it was very busy for a Thursday night. Each selection is perfected and chosen with the best ingredients. They have apps, first course, main course and desert. I had the zucchini pie and buffalo Mozzarella for app- the mozzarella is a favorite amongst many guests, it was perfected with the right amount of spices. For dinner I got the half ragatoni and half white sauce with mixed Meat, and other got linguine with fish, and two other spaghetti options. They were out of epic abc and lamb but I've heard that their spinach salad is one of their best foods. We were so impressed with the restraints history- wine cellar available to tour and have drinks is older than the colosseum, the restaurant walls are the original synagogue walls, with the dining room being the oldest synagogue in the country(I think). For desert, I was blown away by the creme Brûlée and panna cotta with lavender. I could not believe the different layers of freshness in the desert. To top off our meal we drank the White House wine- loved it so much that we ended up ordering two bottles.
