The staff is very nice, the service is good, but the food was the reason for 3 stars instead of 4 stars. The location is north Vista, in a small strip mall, with horrible parking and a designed flawed driveway. The ambiance is ok, it is clean and nice. We ordered a mix of things. The hummus was good. The chicken pita sandwich and fries were very soggy when I got home to eat them. The pita was falling apart, the chicken was good, but the sandwich had ingredients that are not normally on the chicken pita's at other places. The sandwich was ok, and maybe if I try it at the restaurant, fresh it would be better. The salad with chicken was ok, but the chicken was overdone. The gyro, rice, pita plate was ok. The baklava seemed to be a little burnt on the bottom but it had a good flavor. Maybe it was just a bad night for the food that we got or it sat too long steaming in the to go containers. I don't think I've ever had a worse experience, ordering from a Mediterranean restaurant. Ordered a combo meal and all the meat was charred and burnt like they warmed it up on a grill. It just had an awful taste. And that black juice got all into the rice so really the meal was inedible. Kind of taste that leaves a bad aftertaste. Also ordered a gyro salad and same with the meat on it. I would hope that this is a one off, but the garlic sauce/dip was also truly bad. It was more like mayonnaise with a little bit of garlic. Mayonnaise is all that you can taste. The side salad was good and fresh, but again the dressing and also the tzatziki were nothing to write home about. My first time here. I ordered the onion rings and chicken kabab plate. The onion rings were served very hot and crispy. I enjoyed the lemon pepper seasoning on them. The chicken kababs were good, too. They had good flavor and the chicken was cooked well. My husband enjoyed the lamb dish. It's a small restaurant. Service was okay. First time eating at Taverna Grill. The hubs and I both ordered the gyros sandwich for lunch. It came with a side (he had fries, I had the salad) and a drink. There was no one in the restaurant when we arrived a bit before 2pm on a Monday afternoon. The area was clean and we were greeted as soon as we walked in. The sandwiches were large and the sides were a good portion. Everything tasted fresh, hot and delicious. The only downfall is that they only offer soda in cans, so no refills...but, they did offer Coke Zero! It's a bit out of our way so I don't know when we'll be back, but if in the area, it's a good lunch option. read more

Food was amazing! We have tried multiple other Mediterranean food places since moving to North county a few months ago and Taverna was the best! The flavors were on point on all the meats and sauces. Short version: Decent food. Room for improvement. I've been here three times. I enjoyed the food each time. Things that I wish were better - The prices are a bit high and more in-line with a premium establishment, yet it is a counter-service atmosphere. Each time I was there, the ambiance was lacking -- Dirty and un-bussed tables, inflammatory/political news station on the TV with volume a bit loud. Mostly empty restaurant with people just passing through for takeout. Counter service employees are just barely there, or you can check yourself out on the kiosk. The second time I went, I originally ordered for dine-in, and had to ask for takeout since we didn't want to sit at a dirty table and listen to the yucky news. Again, the food is good. Not amazing but no complaints. But for this level of an experience, if I'm spending $45 for two people, I feel like I've overpaid. read more

Discovered this gem thanks to Groupon and what a fabulous find! I likely wouldn't explore this part of town bc it's not the most appealing spots but thanks to Groupon I took a chance and hit the jackpot. The food is AMAZING! I didn't know what I wanted so I got the Taverna kebab special which had chicken, beef and gyro, and also came with a side of Greek salad and tsitsiki with pita. All this was less than $20! Found Taverna on Yelp and found it to be a nice, quiet place in the middle of a small strip mall. Staff is friendly and the restaurant is clean. You order at the counter then the food is brought to the table you select. Ordered the chicken salad lunch special and was happy with my choice. Roasted vegetables, tomatoes, olives, red onion and tender grilled chicken topped the crunchy romaine lettuce. The special included a side of delicious tzatziki, tasty hummus, warm pita and a fountain drink. Even though there are several "chain" Mediterranean eateries located closer to my house, this place wins, hands down, because their food seriously tastes home cooked! I just gotta say that their Lamb Shank is absolutely exquisite! It's perfectly prepared with a tangy, tasty, delicate sauce that coats the meat. What's more, the rice they they serve with it is so incredibly flavorful and their entrees also come with a fresh side salad. I'm married to someone who is 1/2 Greek and they love them their lamb so we even came back the next weekend to get another order of this! Their Tzatziki is like dipping your pita bread into a fragrantly fresh and creamy milkshake. Their Baba Ghanoush (Roasted Eggplant) is also totally awesome because it has a light but hearty garlic flavor and their Gyro Fries are a meal in itself. If you're not sure what to order I'd highly recommend their "Meal For Two" because it comes with an assortment of meats, salad, sauces, and yummy Bakalva! The $18.63 gyro a la carte had the same amount of meat, and less grilled veggies, than what typically comes on gyro salad, which is a $1 cheaper. They charge over $1 each for those tiny solo sauce cups of tzatziki or garlic sauce. And that's on top of having to order from a touchscreen kiosk, eating off paper plates and plastic fork, and being expected to clear my own table. The Taverna is a small place between Goodwill and the Dollar store. The inside isn't bad, not much atmosphere but nice enough. Right around the corner from home so we are touring the menu. What we have tried so far: the hummus is very good, the tzatziki is also good (more herbal than some), and the gyro pita sandwich was great! Lots of fresh veggies to complement the meat. The falafel were OK, still looking for falafel that compare well to what I had in Tel Aviv.
