We came in excited to enjoy a nice evening, but unfortunately, we were made to feel extremely uncomfortable and out of place. We were told that we were being too loud after an American couple of four walked in. As Italians, we are naturally expressive, we talk with our hands, and we enjoy lively conversation. There is a difference between being disrespectful and simply being excited and enjoying ourselves. What made the experience even more upsetting was watching the other couple receive a complimentary bottle of wine and then proceed to put it right in front of us. We have never felt more unwelcome at a restaurant, and unfortunately, this completely overshadowed our experience. read more

Tucked away off the Main Street, across a sidewalk and down a small alley lies a true traditional Italian restaurant called Tavern Allegra. This is what they mean when they say "hidden gem" lol. But please use your yelp map, google map or whatever you have to find this place. Wonderful old school Italian atmosphere with a family-run business and live music entertainment performing all the old Italian classics. Delicious authentic food and friendly staff. This is what true Italian food and culture is about. Guiseppe and his wife were wonderful and engaging. A delightful addition to a fabulous meal. On the owners recommendation I tried the Ravioli di mare - A homemade ravioli stuffed with clams and seabass in a cherry tomato sauce. It was magnifico! I'm so glad I took his recommendation. Beautiful restaurant inside, and the entertainment was cute. The food was good, but unfortunately, the service really took away from the experience. We walked in around 6:20 PM and placed our food order by 6:30 PM. Our appetizers didn't come out until 7:46 PM -- yes, over an hour later. We were there with our kids, and by that point they were absolutely starving. When a table has children, I really feel there should be some effort to get at least the kids' food out as soon as possible, especially when the wait is that long. Come here for some authentic Italian food with excellent service. Everyone was accommodating and gracious. They even taught us some new Italian words. The fried zucchini flower was exceptional and the gnocchi was sold but a burst of flavor. The seafood tasted fresh with the homemade pasta. Was looking forward to this dinner because of all the good reviews but I'm not quite sure as I felt the food missed the mark and didn't compare to some of the other Italian food I had this trip. I made a reservation on Google but when I showed up, they didn't have our reservation, apparently they rejected the reservation which is crazy because I'm so used to just making the reservation online and it's automatically confirmed whereas this place indeed sent me a rejection email earlier in the day saying they couldn't confirm the reservation - not something I've ever experienced before since I always just assumed when you make the reservation on Google, it's already confirmed automatically but I will definitely pay closer attention to my emails in the future. Luckily they were able to fit us in but said we had to be done eating in an hour which was fine with me as we weren't trying to have a long dinner. I got the mixed seafood grill and most of it was dry and slightly overcooked, not much flavor. The grilled vegetables were just the cold appetizer grilled vegetables. The homemade pasta with sausage was alright but not amazing. The ambiance was a nice family restaurant with live music. Kind of tucked away down a side street in Sorrento, but close to our hotel. Our waiter was really friendly and funny, that's the only reason I'm giving this four stars as the overall meal was probably closer to 3 or 3.5. read more

TavernAllegra is tucked down a cute little alley and is an adorable restaurant with tables on the path, as well as an indoor dining area. We made a reservation after trying to wait for a table the night before and it was packed. Service was great, we were seated outside and brought fresh bread. The tagliatelle alla Bolognese was so delicious, as was the Linguine all'Astice. I had a lot of lobster pasta in Italy, and this was one of my top fave dishes. I didn't love my fried seafood mix, it was just too much and wasn't super flavorful, but I experienced that throughout Italy, not just here. My fiancée loved his segundi of the beef filet with green pepper sauce. I would absolutely recommend this place for lunch or dinner, it's perfect for a stroll to and from your meal and the ambiance is unbeatable in that little alley. read more

This restaurant is tucked away in a quiet alleyway and is like a hidden treasure. The staff are so friendly and make you feel very welcomed. The food was some of the best I've had. We had delicious gnocchi, seared salmon and prawns in the most delicious garlic and oil sauce, just be aware that they leave the head with the eyes on, lol! Not easy to find because it is behind the building on the main street, so take the side path to the back. Once there, be ready for a great experience! The owner does a lot of table touches and takes your order, so he can answer questions and make recommendations, if asked. The rest of the staff helps with serving and clearing tables. I ordered the Sorrento Kindness cocktail, which is limoncello and prosecco. It was a nice balance of sweet and tart. My first course was swordfish parmigiana with eggplant, which was mostly eggplant, but I enjoyed it very much! I ordered the Sciatiatelli ai frutti di mare as my entree. It's short cut, flat pasta with mussels, octopus, calamari, and clams, and pieces of fish. It was amazing! I found this place thanks to the Yelp app, so trust the app when looking for recommendtions. read more

*Warning for Recommended Sorrento Restaurant* We went to TAVERN ALLEGRA in Sorrento. They will serve you a dish of seafood ravioli at the end of your dining experience. We expressed we did not ask for it many times- we don't even like seafood ravioli. It came and we just moved it around the plate, thought it was a complimentary add on since we just got engaged. The Waiter CHARGED US, was very good rude, and wouldn't remove it until we about walked out. DO NOT GO HERE! This is my only negative experience ever in Italy. read more

We stopped in after lunch for a drink, and absolutely loved it. They said they have a large dinner crowd but lunch is light, and we were one of the only groups around. We sat outside in a narrow alley that was exactly as you would picture Italy to be...narrow streets with bricked walls and clothes lines along the balconies. The staff was engaging and courteous, and they made sure we were come and gave great food recommendations. The wine we had (picture added) was pretty good. It was 38 euros, and was a light red. It was almost to the point of having carbonation, but wasn't so to the point it was distracting. We had an appetizer of Bruschetta, but I have to say this isn't an American bruschetta. This had a cheese base with shaved eggplant and fresh cherry tomatoes. It was the best bruschetta I've ever had. We then had dessert which was something we hadn't planned to get...so glad we did. The best we had was the pear and ricotta cheesecake tart. We also had the lemon tort, which was great, but the pear ricotta was the best. Highly recommend, and it's a great escape from the tourist areas. read more

This was a great find as we walked down narrow Via Santa Maria on a rainy Saturday. Pranzo was excellent. We were welcomed warmly and given a very nice table for four plus a high chair. We started with Affettata di Salumi (assorted salami) for the table. Our main dishes were all excellent pasta dishes. The spaghetti with tuna sauce was outstanding, as was the oenne with eggplant and tomato sauce. The lemon cake was out of this world. We liked TavernAllegra so much that we returned a couple of days later for cena (dinner) which was also excellent. The cena menu is different and slightly more expensive than that for pranzo. We enjoyed grilled shrimp, fried calimari, sautéed sea bass, abd a misto di pesce (mixed grilled seafood), in addition to more wonderful pasta dishes. The risotto with gorgonzola, chicory and pistachios was out of this world. There is also live music at cena, which helps set the mood for a great evening. The wine list is nice, and we went both times for the primotivo (excellent choice for the foods we selected). Everyone at TavernAllegra was cheerful and welcoming. If you eat in only one restaurant in Sorrento, then make it TavernAllegra! read more

Very friendly service, wonderful live music and a really unique feel. The house wine was delicious and I adored the ambiance. The prices relative to quality of experience were excellent. The bread was very good, not the best I've had but very respectable. I got one of their specials, pasta in a cream based sauce with mushrooms, cherry tomatoes, and sausage. Overall the dish was delicious. If there's one recommendation I would make, it's a little more acidity to the dish, but the pairing of wine was able to smooth over that criticism. The tiramisu was alright, better than most I've had, but it wasn't particularly special. I would leave this place 4 stars for the food alone, but the music, service, and ambiance really raised it up, and I would eagerly recommend the place. It was my favorite meal in Sorrento. read more

Tucked away in the side streets of Sorrento. This place is an absolute gem. Nice quiet place with live music. Good is wonderful and service attentive. We ordered insalata Pomodori (tomato salad), casarecce alla boscaiola (homemade pasta with tomato/mushroom/sausage), Fettuccini alla bolognese (meat sauce), Scialatielli also Scoglio (pasta with mixed seafood), Pesce Fresco del Giorno (Fresh fish of the day in choice of sauce- sea bass with tomato/garlic). T born steak. All the dishes were wonderful and cooked and seasoned perfectly. Special mentioned were the Scialatiella with mixed fish and shellfish as well as the fresh fish of day - sea bass in garlic tomorrow sauce. Probably the two best I had in Sorrento and both are absolute must try if you visit. Highly recommend this jplace and I would gladly dine here again. read more
