I wanted to support a local business and I was hoping for a hole in the wall restaurant. We ordered a root beer, 4 hard shell, and 4 soft shell tacos. They asked if we wanted sour cream but didn't mention it would be an extra .50 cents PER TACO. $4 extra for sour cream. We spent $29 on this food thinking okay, it better be good. We have been driving by this place for a long time and always think we need to stop, and today we did. We went in at dinner time, there were a couple people inside for take out but no one eating in. It was okay inside, the tables were clean, no trash about -- which is better than I have seen elsewhere. We ordered a chicken quesadilla, steak taco, and beef nachos to go. They had it all ready in a reasonable amount of time. When we got home, everything was there and the portions were quite ample. We were full! It was done well, there may be other menu options I would like better, so maybe we'll be going back to work through the menu. The first time going I tried a few different tacos and they were good, and nicely seasoned (a nice change of pace from the usual American style tacos at Chipotle, etc.). After the first visit I tried the the chicken burrito and have only ordered that since as it's consistently so good (have ordered it a half dozen times at least now). It's put together really well, and the seasoning they use makes for a magical mouth experience within each bite. It's also very generous with serving size and you get a handful of chips, the combination is more than enough to fill you up. read more

Finally made it here recently for dinner after finding our first choice with a long line of people waiting to get in. No wait at this place. There were a few diners already seated at tables eating their dinner selections and the place seemed oddly quiet of any human sounds except for a little talking in kitchen area. Being my first time here, I ordered their chicken enchiladas plate that included rice and refried beans. I asked the woman behind the counter taking our order whether they made their horchata from scratch. She said they did, and offered that they also make their own jamaica, too. Based on what she told me about their horchata, I ordered a serving of it. After placing our order, we were told our order # so that we could retrieve our food once it was prepared. The first sip of the horchata was one of heavy sweetness and little else, which made me think they might not actually make their own from scratch. It tasted like it may have been pre-mix stuff. From my experience, made from scratch horchata is lighter in body, less sweet, and with a pronounced cinnamon flavor. My chicken enchilada plate was served on a porcelain plate and with a plastic fork. And no knife. I had an awkward time cutting bites of enchilada with the side of an unstable plastic fork. Strange that they served food on a porcelain plate but with no metal flatware. The enchilada sauce was a tangy green tomatillo and the chicken inside seemed moist and tasty. The rice and beans were really good. Getting to the end of my enchilada trio, I found the last one simply folded over like a taco, instead of rolled up. Part way through our meal, the silence inside the place was broken by someone turning on some Mexican music. Ahhh! That's just what was needed for some ambiance! read more

Before I say anything else, I am a super picky eater and so if it's good then it's good! I've had a lot of hit or misses with authentic tacos (texture wise) but these were the bomb dot com! Super fresh and delicious, comes with two tortillas. I got pico de Gallo, sour cream and cheese on the side. The pico de Gallo tasted really good and the sour cream must have been home made because I've never seen anything that creamy and so light. So glad I tried Tavial. I am a Mexican food lover and I was not disappointed! It was national burrito day so naturally, I had to get a burrito. I ended up trying their chicken tinga burrito along with chips and salsa. These burritos are incredibly satisfying...they're huge so come hungry. Their chips are clearly homemade and are dusted with a special seasoning. Chips are served with a pico/salsa blend with a citrusy kick; very unique! Not like a typical bland red salsa that you may expect from a lesser Mexican restaurant. Thanks to other yelp reviews, I had to try their tiger cake. Another unique treat that consists of layers of white and chocolate cake, filled with buttercream frosting and then more chocolate. Served chilled. I would highly recommend trying this if you need a chocolate pick-me-up! Great deal as well- burrito was $7, chips and salsa for $3 Staff were friendly and welcoming, laid back atmosphere. read more

I have been to this place on multiple occasions. It never disappoints! The food is amazing! I think of it as comfort food. I almost always get the chicken chimichangas. They are not made like typical chimichangas. The filling is a wonderful array of cheese, sauce, and chicken. The outside is fried and crispy. I love cutting them up and mixing them with the rice and beans. I never forget to put the green sauce on them! I honestly don't know what the green sauce is but it is divine! Wonderfully spicy and flavorful. My co-workers like the red sauce. It is milder for those with more delicate tastebuds. My co-workers often try different items whenever we go. I've never heard anything but glowing remarks from them. We don't get to go out often for lunch. When we do, Tavial is one of a very small few that we always hit up! I never leave without a slice of Tiger Cake. It's white cake between two layers of dark and white chocolate buttercream and chocolate cake. I have no words to describe how phenomenal this cake is. I have tried the Galaxy Cake as well. While it is also amazing, Tiger Cake is my favorite! Tavial is a family run restaurant. You can tell this restaurant is a labor of love. They grow their own peppers out front. I've seen them pick them before. The owners do the cooking. I wish I could write a review that does this place justice. I highly recommend. I don't know why she holds some sort of grunge against me or if it's just plain old poor service. The tamales were 90% flour with a couple of tiny shreds of chicken, and the cheese/green salsa one had one small strip of cheese inside and nothing that looked like green salsa. Tried this place as a neighbor recommended it. I won't be back. My steak burrito was massive and flavorless. It was about 50 percent unsalted white rice, and the only thing that had any flavor was the steak itself, which was a little strip along one side of the mammoth burrito. It seemed about as un-Mexican as I've had in a decade plus. The tortilla chips are good and the tiny cup of pico (they called it salsa) was fresh and tasty. The two hot sauces were atrocious. The red sauce was horrible and the green was only a little better. Oh, and the total for two burritos, chips and sodas was $27, so it's not like it was cheaper than a real Mexican restaurant. Alright, the review: I. SPACE: Like many other taquerias, the interior is cozy, casual, humble, and perfect for small groups. They have their own lot, and finding a spot on the street shouldn't be too difficult, too. II. FOOD: They have mostly everything from enchiladas pollo to taco carnitas. They also have additional items such as chicken wings and cheese curds to attract other customers. But then again, who doesn't like those things? I ordered a couple burritos al pastor, for dinner with my boo that night. *Burrito Al Pastor: Just the right amount of spice, tender meat, not too bean-y, and just enough rice (without it encompassing the entire burrito). I also love that their al pastor incorporates some of the pineapple that's used to soften and make the meat more succulent. I would consider making a long drive to get it this, when possible. *Chips: Nice, crispy, and hot. They come with every order, as well as some complimentary dips. III. SERVICE: Incredibly friendly! Not only is this place run by a family joint - where, I had the pleasure of speaking to both the son and father - but they also treat you like family. Kindness kills. IV. PRICES: What bumps this eatery up a star is their incredibly low prices for food. $5.99 for a burrito? Quesadillas for $5.50? My friend got the beef cheek taco, tongue taco, and chicken tamale. This is the most delicious Mexican food I have had in the Twin Cities! The meat tasted great, and all the ingredients were fresh. Somehow I blocked this place out all the times I drove by thinking it's just another bent joint. Then Linda H. brought it up and I never heard of it. That's how much I never knew it was there. I never had a tamale, but I'll try it. I broke down and got an enchilada with only cheese, topped with squirted sour cream. I think there were 3 plus the beans and rice that I mixed together, not only to get my complete protein that way, but it's the only way to eat it to get the great flavor. So, this totally breeds the A word. They've improved this upper part of W. Seventh, but now I love it, and it's just a spit away from Mojo Monkey donuts, where there never fails to be a screaming kid. My obsession with Tavial began after a ridiculously late bus had me trying a different bus route and walking past Tavial to the next stop, because standing idle kills me inside. Well after a few days standing idle downtown turned into standing idle at a bus stop right next to Tavial whilst also being hungry--no bueno. It was only natural for this little family-owned joint to become part of my afternoon routine because the tacos are to divine. Between the meats marinated in whatever divine spice, the fresh ingredients, and I presume a pinch of love, you'd be hard pressed to find such tasty food at such a reasonable price. I especially recommend the El Pastor and Tinga tacos--just two of 'em and I'm satiated and glowing with radiance from the sheer awesomeness of this place. Not melted cheese mind you, but light shreds that rest invitingly on the top. And the real kicker is their homemade salsa. I am giving this place 1 star because that's the lowest it allows me. They advertise coupons but then when you go to the restaurant they don't accept it. Owner did not even have the courtesy of honoring it. Service is super slow. The salsa for appetizer is served in a small plastic cup, isn't even real salsa, the chips are okay.
