I've come here over the last five years and still find the kitchen consistently delivering on delicious food. I get the Steak Taco plate. absolute perfection. I only gave them a one because I had to. $16 for two tacos and chips n salsa. The prices and portions they have on yelp are wrong and misleading. The tacos were small and flavorless. I ordered an extra salsa for $2.25. Because most places give you lots of chips. This place didn't even give you enough chips to eat one salsa. Found this via Yelp search when I was craving tacos, fellow yelpers did not disappoint. Definitely a hole in the wall hidden gem! - the pastor taco - the best flavor and only $2.5 - the fish tacos - a close second - the chicken Tinga - I was debating between this and the chorizo and the lady at the counter said the chicken was better. Good flavor but not my favorite. Also ordered the chicken tamale but took it to go as I was stuffed. But coworker said the chicken tamale was really good and moist. My husband has the good luck to come here for lunch, and I finally made the trek over. It's places like this that make me think West 7th is the BEST neighborhood in St Paul. Love this place! Incredible food and great service. I've had several items on their menu and I have no complaints about anything I have had. A personal favorite of mine is their asada torta which are packed full of beef, onions, jalapeños, tomatoes, avocado, and cheese served on a perfectly crispy torta bun. In my frantic search for "best burrito near me" (on national burrito day, my new favorite holiday), Tavial was in the top few results and had been in my bookmarks for a while so away we went. And I'm so glad we did! We went around 6, and it wasn't very busy, so we had some time to take in their rather large menu. Legally, on that day we had to order burritos, so we did. I opted for the al pastor - $6.99 for what might be the biggest burrito I've held in my hands/arms. Extremely filling! The al pastor had a very good, slightly sweet flavor and was super tender. We tried the tiger cake as well - delicious! OK, so in full disclosure, I do not like Mexican food. I take that back. I don't like Tex-Mex food. My husband does though, but I rarely eat out at Mexican restaurants in the Twin Cities. We decided to stop here for a quick lunch and I have to admit, it was really delicious. While the ambience is lacking, the food tasted authentic, fresh and very flavorful. I ordered the carnitas and Pastor pork tacos. For $2.75/taco, you can't go wrong! The green hot sauce was delicious also. The customer service was great/friendly, and the place was very clean. This place is good. I went last night and it was very cold out, unfortunately it was also very cold in. They need to turn the heat on. Their food is quite good, but I think the prices go up everytime I go. I got the cabeza tacos, rice and beans platter and it was $10.49. All of it very good. But they just started a new policy that they charge you a fee to use a credit card. Hello, this is 2019, most people only use credit cards - don't charge us extra. Did you know it saves a business money if they don't have to handle cash? Don't penalize us for doing you a favor. Anyway, as you can tell I find this off putting. FYI, they do not take the entertainment coupon you might find in the Entertainment book, and there are other coupons they also don't accept. They do however trade money for food, so if you happen to have some money, it's not a bad place to get some grub. I've had a few dishes here, including the chorizo burrito, which was good. It's a nice, informal, sunlit dining room, unlike many taquerias where you are tightly fit into narrow cave. Bathrooms are clean, and looks well run. read more

Great family run restaurant in a nice neighborhood. Their carnitas torta is one of the best sandwiches I've ever had in my life- with all the fixings. My girlfriend suggested this place after she came across this place and seeing 5 stars 56 reviews!! Boy was she excited. I decided to go eat lunch with her during her break and she suggested we grabbed Tavial Grill. Tavial Grill is located south St. Paul...I never thought I would be driving all the way out there to grab some Mexican food, but after seeing the reviews, we agreed to give this place a go. The restaurant is somewhat new (September 2014). It's a nice small restaurant that seemed to have bought a past fast food restaurant. They offer both dine-in and a drive through. I came here around 11:45AM on a Friday and was not that busy. I walked in and the floors seemed a little dirty. Though this place only opened less than a year, it seemed to be somewhat dirty for its age. However, their tables and seats were top notch. Clean and new looking. Upon entrance, I gazed at the huge menu. They seemed to not only serve a variety of Mexican foods like Tacos, tamales, quesadillas and burritos, but also American favorites like Philly Cheesesteaks, Chicken wings, salads, cheese curds and more. It seemed like of odd..., but hey if it's good, why not sell it. This place seemed to be opened by a family. I placed my order to, which seemed like the owner's son. He was very sweet and nice and answered the questions I had. I asked him if he preferred burritos or tacos and he told me he personally likes the burritos. I decided to go with the carnitas burrito. I love carnitas burritos! I get it at almost all Mexican restaurants. My girlfriend wanted tacos, so I got her 2 carne asada tacos and 1 pastor (pork) taco, which contained pork, pineapple and onion..which I thought was a little weird. I don't often get pineapple in my tacos...but hey, it seemed like it'll be good nonetheless. I then tried to order, my staple drink. The Horchata. I love horchata!! It's one of my favorite drinks to drink! I love cinnamon flavoured foods! I didn't see it on the menu, so I asked them if they had it. The young boy told me not yet, they are still looking to get a machine for it.. Hmm, I was a little disappointed, but I knew my girlfriend would be even more disappointed. After placing my order, I saw some guy eating tamales. After being unable to resist..I went back and ordered a pork tamale... Boy does this a lot of food for 2 people. They packed all the food in a lunch bag and topped it with tortilla chips! Now onto the food..... First thing I tried was my burrito. It was pretty big and was a little scared I wouldn't be able to finish it. I then started chowing it down. The burrito had rice, beans lettuce, sour cream, tomatoes, cheese, and carnitas meat... boy was this a bland burrito. I'm sorry, the carnitas meat was very bland..did not like how their carnitas tasted. It wasn't moist..wasn't fattening..and wasn't roasted well. It might be one of the worst..burritos I've ever had at a Mexican place... I couldn't even finish it..I tossed the last 1/4. Next I tried the carnitas tamale. The carnitas in the tamale was again..as disappointing as the one in the burrito. Lastly..my girlfriend's tacos. I didn't try any, but she did not like it at all..and she's tried tacos from all over California and Minnesota. She recommends tacqueria la hacienda on lake street for tacos. I JUST came back from my lunch there and felt the need to review them right away. I went today because it was Taco Tuesday AND Cinco de Mayo so what better excuse to try a place that's been on my list? I was expecting madness since it's Cinco de Mayo but there wasn't any wait at lunch time! I got there at about 12:15 and was up next to order. You order, then they call your number when it's ready. I was looking over the menu and one of the guys working, probably the owner made some suggestions. I wanted to try the Alambre or the Fajitas but I wanted tacos so I went with tacos so I could try several kinds of the meats. They had some interesting ones but I stayed on the safe side this time and got steak, pastor, and tinga. I also ordered a red pork tamale. It was cheap! Around $10 or $11. Food was done fast and came with a couple bottles of hot sauces. I liked the red sauce better but both were legit. Food was good, solid 4 star food but the service was impeccible. Everyone working was SO friendly and sincerely wanted to make sure I liked my food. He came over to clear my tray and asked how I liked it and if I would be back, and told me he's remember me if I did, becuase he likes to remember his regulars! So sweet. First time checking out this place. I like the family owned old school vibe they have. The menu is fairly straightforward. Tacos, burritos, tortas, an assortment of plates with anything from alambres to enchiladas etc. The service was very friendly. Let's talk about the tacos. The tortillas were doubled up and perfectly cooked. I really enjoyed the two salsas which were very flavorful and actually spicy. The fillings were solid but a little on the dry side and probably my least favorite part of the whole taco experience. I am a Minneapolis guy who is slowly trying to explore more of what the other side of the river has to offer. This place is WORTH checking out and I would go out of my way for some more of these delicious tacos and see what else this place has to offer. read more

Top notch, inexpensive Mexican food. Tavial Grill really deserves their Five Star ranking. We've tried multiple dishes from their menu and loved them all. We highly recommend the Chimichangas. Make sure to pick up both of their sauces too. We love them both and wouldn't want to pick just one. They have some other dishes ranging from American to Greek, which we haven't tried; the Mexican food is so good, why would you order a Greek salad? The restaurant has a very casual atmosphere, they don't serve alcohol, their food is served on a range of tableware (I had paper plates and a plastic fork, but my wife had her food served with a silver spoon (actual cutlery and plates), they don't have a wait staff (you order at the counter and pick-up from a window), and they do take credit cards. Anyway, stop by and eat in or take-out from their drive-in. The food is great and you will not be disappointed. read more

There's a reason these guys get such good reviews: this is the best place in the Twin Cities for tacos, bar none. The pastor and and carnitas are my favorites, but the asada is also supberb. Everything they make, actually, is top-notch and authentically Mexican. The family who owns and runs Tavial is amazing, some of the nicest people you'll ever meet.
