First of all... I don't knit. It's not that I don't want to. It's more that I haven't picked up the talent yet and truly I don't need another project or hobby right now. With that said though- this store is awesome! I visited the Nifty Knitter for the first time this week with my bestie and her favorite five month old looking for yarn for her newest project: socks! We were immediately greeted at the door by store clerk Johnathan. He was so friendly and helpful during our visit- and funny too! Johnathan clearly has a love for this store and the art of knitting and his excitement makes you want to jump in on the fun too! He was very sweet with the baby and made us all feel very welcome. We were looking for soft yarn in multi-colored skeins for socks for her and hubby. We ended up picking out a cranberry shaded multi-colored skein for her and a bright pink and purple "unicorn" skein for the nine year old at home. Nothing for her hubby- we couldn't decide on a color for him. She will ask him more questions and come back. This store has sooo many good options! Many of the yarn types have sample swatches or patches like potholders for you to feel and touch to see what the texture of your finished project with that yarn might be like. We absolutely fell in love with the milk yarn - it is sooo soft and fluffy like kittens! They have a nice classroom/table setting in the back for classes which sound like they happen fairly regularly. If I ever get the urge to take up knitting- I'll come here for sure! Bonus points: they will wind your purchased yarn skein into a ball for you for free. My friend was so impressed by this- apparently this type of customer service is over the top awesome and rare for yarn stores in the area. She was thrilled and said she will definitely be back for other knitting projects supplies.

From the old, old shopping center in the 80s by JC Penny, to the small location by IKEA and then this one, I've been a customer and followed them, literally, since 1986, and learned how to read a pattern through classes that were worth the 30 minute drive to get there, even with a houseful of babies. Got a question? I encourage you to call and ask. You won't be disappointed. I've been told "we'd love to see you but we don't have that in stock right now." The honesty is refreshing. Do they seem busy? Speak up; they're just waiting to hear what you need and will get to you as soon as they can. The best experience is to allow ample time to browse. You'll won't be nagged while deciding on the perfect pattern, and they'll gladly help you choose the perfect yarn to make it, if you can't decide which yarn on your own. I'm treating myself to a special trip just for yarn tomorrow; my birthday present to myself. I can't wait! I'll probably still miss Wynne, but I hope I'm still around to see these ladies retire and pass the store on to the employees who will buy it in the future.

I took in a skein of yarn that had been munched on by moths (thankfully they were long gone post feast) and Shannon, one of the lovely gals who works there, spent over two hours unravelling, hand winding and then winding the little balls into one beautiful cake. I highly recommend this space if you are looking for some very nice folks to help you find what you need and provide classes of all kinds.

It's my personal ritual to make a far(er)-flung trek to a yarn store outside the main city area…read moreevery time I travel. Acorn Street turned out to be the BEST yarn store I have been to. Their selection of yarn is extensive and very organized; Juni and Si was holding a trunk show while I was there. They have a variety of both local and famous yarn (ie Madtosh, Malabrigo, Berroco), and most of all, their staff is the sweetest bunch. But, but! The thing I loved most is the sheer number of needles and notions they carry: both singular sizes and also full sets from different vendors (Lykke, Chiaogoo, KP). You can spend hours here brainstorming a project and buying everything you need to start swatching. I bought some cute pine cone stitch markers, a skein from Juni and Si for some socks and an Addi needle (with which I'm already in love with and off to the races on a new project). Thanks, Mary and Janet! I will surely, surely be back the next time I am in town.
