We bought our Shih Tzu Scout Bear from Teacups 6 years ago and could not be happier! He is a super healthy, friendly and affectionate pup with the sweetest disposition. The owners are dog lovers and protect them even if they have to disappoint customers. ie-window tapping by customers is forbidden, puppy handling is strictly monitored and done is a special area after they explain how to hold pups and once a pup is selected, absolutely no customers are allowed to touch that pup except the family it will be joining. The puppies are taken home at night, which I believe is why my dog is so well adjusted and without phobias. He is clearly a dog who has only known happiness and kindness. When they send the dog home with its new family, they set up an appointment after hours so they can carefully explain dog care without interruptions. We also received a package which included a wellness check at a local vet, an in-home training session/safety check, food supply (same as what he was already eating to avoid digestive issues) and other goodies. The store carries a great selection of high quality items--the clothes are irresistible and I always find something I just have to get! read more

We got a teacup poodle from Tea Cups & Toys in Birmingham, Michigan, and our experience was very disappointing. Our puppy had numerous health problems, which resulted in a lot of stress, vet visits, and unexpected expenses. Based on our experience, we do not believe this is a reputable breeder. We regret purchasing a puppy from them and would not recommend them to others. We wanted to share our experience as a warning because what should have been an exciting experience turned into a very difficult one due to our dog's health issues. I adopted my toy poodle in 2016 and she was cute as a button. But she eventually had seizures (3 to date that we know of) and my sisters believe she was likely pulled from her mom too soon, therefore exhibiting anxiety issues. Mind you, she was raised with another toy poodle (not from TC&T) who is perfect across the board, so it's not rearing from our home. I just don't trust Jeff and have been the recipient of his wrath attitude. It's hit or miss with this store. Just don't get on the bad side of Jeff. If I can give this place zero stars, I would. Do not bring your dog here to be groomed. They lack professionalism. Especially the owner Jeff/Joe. I'm not one to complain, but the cut my dog was given was not what i wanted at all, and they had no regard in trying to make it better. The owner has no sympathy, and will have an attitude with you when you express how you are not satisfied. My dog is a cockapoo, i'm not sure why they would give him this type of cut because he is part POODLE. The owner Jeff stated, "this is what you asked for" no, it wasn't. Not once did he even apologize either. Obviously mistakes happen, and at first i was just trying to let them know i was not happy with the cut. He had a nasty attitude, not good customer service at all. Then, when i asked for a refund, he refused. Don't bring your pet here if you are looking for a 5 star service. read more

I'm sorry to say that this place is a tad bit of a scam. Initially I believed in the quality of pets etc that they had, however, after purchasing one from here I realized that the my puppy was actually disabled. The vet that they use informed us of this being a congenital issue and indicated that they would tell the owner of the store so they would not breed the same dogs Upon telling the owner he seemed receptive to taking care of the issue and paying for the surgery that would cost us $3000, more then the dog itself!!! When I actually sent him the invoice of the estimated amount he basically did not respond of me and was extremely rude/agitated constantly when approaching this subject. His sister who was there was so much kinder and really cared for the dogs. I hope we don't have to pursue this legally if he does not pitch in or pay for the corrective issue which was a birth defect in my pup. Also the groomer there cut my 2.5 lb dog in two different places that required stitches. When brought to his attention he took care of the expenses, so good for him. However it was not easy as one can imagine I was frantic about what happened, my dog has required constant training for her fear and anxiety response. She is sensitive and anxious all the time now. He only reimbursed one session with a the trainer that we have to use constantly as our little Zoe is still struggling. She has had to go on anti anxiety meds that the vet had to prescribe. Just horrible! He never followed up with what happened to the groomer but if she's still there I would not take my dog back ever again. There are better places that are more sensitive to my dogs and it's owners needs! I live in the downtown area and have to pass by this mans store constantly. I am extremely upset that it's been sort of such negative energy and we don't really feel welcome in the store due to the owners attitude and negative energy when we do walk in. He's the one who didn't make this right but yet we get the attitude. So ridiculous and unprofessional in my opinion. Rather disgusting behavior! We will not be returning here and I feel if this situation is not taken care of by the owner we would be forced to get this another route. There's no way he could ever make up for the struggle we have faced with this pup. If anyone wants to back channel and see actually vet records I would be happy to share as this has been truly emotional and upsetting for me and my family and people need to know. read more

The worst place to get your dog groomed, my daughters cavapoo was shaved, groomer claimed too matted, and didn't call 1st to say I'm going to shave her, then chopped off all hair from her fluffy ears, she looked hideous DO NOT GO THERE FOR GROOMING THE WORST EVER, and other people have had the same experience there also, their dogs got shaved and were never asked before she did, can you imagine picking up your fluffy sweet dog and it's completely buzzed , we are still so beyond sad it will take months and months and months to grow back. read more

Awww...I love this tiny little store that sells tiny little dogs!!! I can't afford, nor do I necessarily want, one of these puppies - mostly because I just don't want the responsibility. BUT...I go in there a lot with my 5 year old niece and the owner and employees are so pleasant and nice - they take the puppies out of their cage and let my niece and (and let's be honest!) me pet them. We've gone in to take pictures and just to look at all of the fun dog stuff. We've gone in to show off pictures of our family dogs and they even gave us a toy to take home with us! This is really a nice, independent, unique retail space in downtown Birmingham...I really hope they stay around for a long time! read more

I was gonna make this the first dog boutique that sells dogs that I've ever rated more than 2 stars, but I changed my mind. To each their own, so if that doesn't bother you then (I'm not here to judge) you'll probably increase this review to 4 stars. Upon entering the store, there's a lot to like. It's nice, bright, clean, they have an employee Emily who is incredibly nice, and they have some awesome looking Michigan paraphernalia for your dog. I took a close look at the enclosures they kept a shih-tzu puppy and two Pomeranian puppies. Looked clean, they looked happy, and didn't seem malnourished. There were a few people looking at them, so I guess this store sells a good number of them. I saw a bag by petote that was very unique and almost perfect for my needs. I asked Emily about it and said that the owner was out, but that I might check back later and she might offer me a discount if I bought it to take back home to LA. Being that this is a boutique that sells dogs, it isn't a light decision for me to purchase something, but here I was considering. I told her I'd think about it and really it's only bc Emily was so helpful and friendly that I was even entertaining the idea. I saw another employee tap her finger against the glass several times trying to get one Pomeranian puppy to calm down. Not good. Isn't it common sense not to aggravate birds, cats, dogs, fish, etc by not rattling the cage? I came back to check out the bag again. It was $550! I had already searched online and found places in LA that would sell it for $450 and probably give me an additional discount on top of that. I met the owner (who wasn't as pleasant as Emily, she has a business edge) and she offered me a 10% discount. That's nice, but I told her I was planning on buying two which even at the $450 price I was proposing, with tax would have been close to $1000. I know I know, I don't know what's wrong with me. I spend too much money on my dog(s) I guess, it's a sickness. She thinks about it and says no. I was a bit floored (and relieved) that she didn't agree. So I walked out and thank god, I did bc now I can buy them at $400 if I really want them and I probably won't need them. But they must be doing great business if they can turn down $1000 in this economy. Even if I moved to Birmingham and lived in this fantastic area with this store a stone's throw away, I probably wouldn't come back to shop here. read more

Wow. Can't believe what I just experienced. Very snooty, unfriendly people. My dog was very nervous and was barking at the groomer when she walked in. She went to give him a treat, and I had to stop her quickly because my dog has food allergies. Don't you think someone working with animals would ask if giving a treat was ok FIRST?!? After just 60 seconds of my dog barking, she said rudely that she won't groom my dog. Wouldn't someone who works with dogs know how to make them comfortable?!? Maybe give it 10 minutes at least to try and play with him? (My dog is truly a lover, normally licking everyone) She barely tried to interact with him. He has NEVER had a problem before. She literally did not want to even try. What made it worse? The owner and groomer "dismissed" me in an incredibly rude fashion. They both left. Literally walked into the back and left me there. BTW- Out of nerves, my dog pooped on the floor. SO happy about that because they behaved like I was the one who crapped on the floor. If I can give negative stars I would! I have a wheaten terrier (show dog), he is on vacation with me visiting family for a month in Birmingham. So we take him in for grooming once a week, bath only. On the 3rd visit, the groomer decided on her own to trim my dog (perhaps she feels my dog's haircut is not to her standards?) A show dog requires very specific skilled person to cut the hair, and this lady obviously has no idea. She took the matter in her own hand and cut off the "fall" (the front face hair which is a symbol for wheatens). This is going to take months for it to grow back and looks ridiculous!!! I don't understand if this worth the few extra dollars she is trying to make when the service was NEVER requested at the first place. Very poor grooming skills in addition. If you need a over priced bath for your dog this place is fine, a haircut? NEVER. Might as well go to petco. read more

My toy poodle puppy was recently CUT by the groomer named Lexie at Teacups & Toys in Birmingham, MI! We picked my puppy up from his appointment and when we returned home, we noticed that he was acting very calm/sad/skittish (especially for a toy poodle puppy) My boyfriend and I examined him and found a laceration DIRECTLY down the hairline on his belly which split open and required surgery under anesthesia to repair !!!!!!! The vet bill was $900 and the groomer CHOSE to cover nothing. The groomer refused to take responsibility for cutting my baby. And he suffered because of it ! I have photo proof of what happened to my dog and I STRONGLY advise that you go elsewhere to have your puppy groomed! I am not happy at all with the service and my heart breaks for my puppy. read more

I purchased my Pomeranian here after extensive research and I could not possibly be happier. He is healthy, happy and as cute as can be. I have frequented this store for pet accessories and always loved it and a family member recently got a puppy from them. Beautiful dog, well mannered. No complaints there. What I have an issue with is when she brought her dog who she grooms regularly to Teacups and Toys to get a grooming and they cut part of his ear off and then tried to pretend that they didn't. Let me reiterate the groomer CUT PART OF THE DOG'S EAR OFF. Then it just got stupider: the groomer said it would grow back--well that's not how science works. The owner didn't apologize and hasn't offered to pay for the subsequent vet bills for the dog or make any type of amends. He obviously doesn't have his dogs' or customers' best interests in mind and that's disappointing and I feel bad for the dog. See I had lost my dog several months earlier from cancer.. So today they called and told me that they had just gotten in 2 puppies, one a boy and one a little girl. I was so excited and told them I would be right there that I wanted the little girl. The girl on the phone said ok I will put your name on her we are open until 7pm. I walked into the store 1 hour later and was told that the little girl puppy was already sold and I said I know I was the one you called and told you I was on my way. They said, "no someone just put a deposit on her". So what they did was call everyone without disclosing that the first person to get there would be the one to get the puppy. I visited this store and had an encounter with the owner, Jeff. I asked to hold one of the puppies and inquired about prices, etc. Firstly, the puppies were insanely overpriced. $1600. No thank you. He proceeded to tell me that for him it is not finding the right home for the dog, it's about matching the right family with their ideal animal. There were 12 week old puppies there that had already been purchased, but according Jeff we not ready to go home yet because they weren't mature enough. Also while holding this dog, he tried to squirm out of my lap and didn't have a chance to get very far before he snatched the creature from me and scolded me for not holding him properly. I HAVE a dog already, thank you. While the other owner, Jeff's sister, was very nice and friendly, Jeff was incredibly rude and arrogant. I would not recommend this place. read more

In fact, we've referred 3 other families to Teacups & Toys and they have all been so pleased with not only their new family member, but also with the fantastic products. The merchandise the store carries is so unique and priced very well. If you're looking for a cheap discount store that sells inferior products, then this isn't your type of store. The owners are the most caring and knowledgeable animal lovers ever and in fact, they take the puppies home with them every night to help them with their social and traveling skills. I have purchased two toy shih tzu's from this store and have been thrilled with them. They are wonderful, loving, calm dogs. I bought the first female 4 years ago and when I bought my next Shih Tzu two years later( a male). . I was worried about how they would bond. The owner came to my house to see how they were doing and gave me tips on how to work woth them. They truly love these animals...they love them and treat them as there own dogs.... Okay , so this boutique at first glance is really cute , and clean. However I feel like the customer service is really fake, and they will say anything to sell,sell,sell. The puppies in the window although cute I'm pretty have to come from a mill. There are constantly puppies of the same breeds in the window. Let's be real here!. Cute products but way over priced. Also they sell freeze dried food which is not as healthy as it seems. You can give your dog pancreas issues. Take my advice from some one who's had 12 dogs in my life time .
