The only thing that is positive in this store is the young man running the aquatics. Finally someone cleaning the Betta Fish bowls. He is amazing and has empathy for the animals in the store. I wrote a review about a year ago and gave it one star. A petco representative then reached out to me and seamed to have empathy for the situation and said they will work on it. So I went today to see what was going on. Not only did they not improve they almost downgraded their care for the animals. I walked straight to the birds because I have a bird at home (NOT FROM PETCO) so I feel very passionate about them! I walk over and see that the bird looks like it has been neglected for 3 months! The nails were so long they where curling in, the bird had clipped wing which I think is ridiculous especially if you are not gonna give the bird attention why clip its wings. Then I look at the enclosure itself and see one old toy then I see the water that looks like it was last changed two weeks ago. And the food had literal dust on it birds are dusty but come on I don't want dandruff on my food. Whilst I'm looking at all this terrible gross food water and care in general the employees are all sitting around the cash register talking while animals are basically being abused in their care. Overall terrible experience there is absolutely no reason for this care and I think there is no reason we should be shopping at petco period there are so many local places that actually care for the animals DONT COME HERE PLEASE. read more

I will never go to petco again. on 11/25/22 had charged me for four dogs of bag food when I only bought two. I went Into the store told them and verified with my bank of the charge. the manager at the location also told me this has happened 3-4times just recently. I then opened an investigation with the customer service department I made 4 phone calls and one email. other than my case not being sent to the right department it took them 24 days to reimburse me $164.06. I did not get any store credit, no nothing. they cost me over $250 because I had to cover the cost of overdraft fees because of them. I live paycheck to paycheck so this really affected me financially. the absolute worst customer service I have ever had and I have worked in custom service for 12years and know that more can be done.I will now take my business else where. read more

During my visit they were having a dog adoption event and the main aisle was full of cages of barking dogs. They have a fenced off dog training area. I like Petco but I usually prefer Petsmart. I find Petco to be have a bit more cluttered look and perhaps more "scented" compared to Petsmart. But here I am and I decided to pick up a few treats for the felines and canines that I have back home. The shop also offers stuff for other types of pets including birds and fish. The store is organized and the prices are clear. A helpful clerk was able to help me with one of the items I'd purchased, even though I think that she was heading off on break. My rating is 0 stars! I placed an order for a bag of dog food and they cancelled the order on me, AFTER I had already claimed my FREE bag of dog food and other rewards! I called the store and spoke to the cashier Jayden who said there is nothing she could do for me. She proceeded to get the manger Taylor on the phone. I then proceed to explain my concern on the rewards that I applied to my order. Her response was "call corporate, nothing they can do at store level." Then she hung up on me. So I called back and no one answered, and CALLED BACK AGAIN to be hung up on AGAIN! I went to the location to get the dog food and that's when I noticed the flavor I ordered was ACTUALLY in stock. I took this to the register where Taylor and Jayden were at. Taylor then blamed a cashier for "not looking for the right flavor" her response was "You need to call corporate" I got my bag of dog food and proceeded to call corporate in the parking lot. I got connected to representative Brianna, who didn't even acknowledge my frustration on this. I waited a few hours and called back to finally get it escalated to a "Supervisor " who told me there is nothing they can do at corporate level. That she will escalate this to the "district manager" Needless to say the customer service at store level and corporate level is below par. At this point being a value member here means nothing! The store is great, but the grooming service is a whole different story. There are a few young ladies in there who do a phenomenal job with our little dog, but the elderly lady is TERRIBLE. We brought our puppy in for her first grooming and all the elderly lady could say is how bad and misbehaved she was and told me if she didn't get better to not bring her back. I was so taken back by this that I spoke with the young lady who groomed her and she had nothing but great things to say. The only problem was she had a tough time clipping her front nails. Grant it she is a puppy at her first grooming and I would think that's understandable. The elderly lady has no respect whatsoever towards me, my wife and our puppy. Shame on this lady and NO ONE should have to experience that. read more

I want to love this place, I really do. It is close to home and the prices are pretty good. However, I cannot find anyone to help me their to save my life. 20 minutes standing in the fish aisles - trying to flag someone down to help me. 4 employees walked passed me and went back to the break room and no one offered to help. Even as I was flagging them down.. This the 4th time this has happened in the last 2 months at this location. I give up. I came in to get my yorkie a haircut. When I arrived, I pulled up the pictures to show to the groomer exactly what we're looking to do. We probably spent 3 minutes talking exclusively about exactly how we wanted it cut. I explained that all we wanted on his head was to shape up the bottom of his jaw and trim around his eyes. The rest of his head we wanted to be completely left alone. She proceeded to do a hack job on the top of his hair, Completely trim his whole face, and left a bunch of random lose Hairs that are four times longer than the rest of his hair around his ears. Luckily the manager asked how it looked when we arrived, but there's no way to undo the fact that all of his hair was completely cut off. She even understood what the problem was immediately and said "oh, so you just wanted a regular Yorkie cut." Yes. That's why we brought our yorkie in and showed a bunch of pictures of yorkies. Unfortunately I had already paid before picking him up, but there was no mention of satisfaction guarantee or a refund or a discount. She simply said that next time we bring him and make sure she was the one that cut the hair instead of one of her employees. read more

I'm seriously fed up with Petco. My boyfriend and I have come here on numerous occasions to get a live feeder mouse for our snake. We've never had ANY problems, most employees just grab the mouse, box it up, have us sign something, and we're on our way. But this time was different. My boyfriend asked for a live feeder mouse and the (manager?) asked another employee to grab it for him. First off, the kid didn't even know where the mice were, so my boyfriend led him over there. Then he started asking a ton of questions, which is fine, maybe he's just curious about our snake. Then he starts going into getting a frozen mouse instead, and berating us for getting a live mouse for feed, and even questioning if we were raising our snake properly! My boyfriend assured him that he has adequate space, is old enough and experienced with live mice, and he just wanted ONE mouse. At the register he asked "how long will this little guy be alive?" And my boyfriend said "maybe an hour." And he said, "oh wow... that's a short life for this guy.. your snake eats fast." We don't need a guilt trip, if I wanted to transition my snake back to frozen/thawed mice then I would. Until then, Petco workers should mind their own business and ask the APPROPRIATE questions, not try to push something else on customers while accusing them of not being knowledgeable about a snake's diet. It shouldn't have taken over 20 minutes to get a feeder mouse, and my boyfriend didn't appreciate the interrogation that came with it. It's a mouse, and Petco has dozens of them. If the policy is changing about selling mice as feeders then maybe educate your whole staff, so they don't give customers a hard time. I'm sick of going in and having one incompetent staff member after the other tell me something different. My poor boyfriend is too polite to say anything, but I wish I could have spoken to the manager about this employees attitude. I get it, he's passionate about animals, but maybe he needs to be trained on how to hold back his personal beliefs while talking to customers. Training with Sue was a fantastic experience. She is a knowledgeable and caring professional. All positive reinforcement my puppy responded very well. The class sizes were small and just the right amount of time. At first I was hesitant to take a class in the middle of the store but it really helps the dogs learn about distractions, other dogs in the area and new people. Took my dog to this location to get groomed. As soon as we walked in they took one look at her and said, "We'll see if she'll let us groom her." I asked, why do you say that? My dog is very sweet and docile. And the other employee said, "Today is a high anxiety day!". So right away it sounded like they weren't going to groom her. The full service groom is about $90. I pick her up 3 hours later, and sure enough my dog looks exactly the same. They said she was, "Scared of the clippers n blow dryer." Yea no crap! It's her first grooming! Zero dogs like those things! Should I never get her groomed?! They tried to charge me $65 for a bath and trimming of her paws, face n butt ! I give my dog a bath at home for free and I have a small clipper for her paws n face. They were super busy and didn't want to deal with my pet. That's how I took it. I spoke to the kind manager and was not charged. Don't waste your time going here to get groomed. read more

I used to like this store until I started catching the rudiest cashier they have on staff, every time I came in. She has longer brown hair she doesn't wear a name tag so I don't know her name. She gets a really bad attitude and is very rude when I price match my items to Petco.com prices WHICH IS COMPANY POLICY. I have it pulled up on my phone from the website and ready but she always makes me feel like I'm trying to trick her or I'm doing something wrong. It's really irritating and makes me feel bad so I'll be going out of my way to go a different store from now on. On occasion I take my Shih-Tzu to this location for a bath (only) whenever we can't get in w/our regular groomer @another salon. Unfortunately our adorable fur baby was in need of a cut (before boarding) so we got it done @Petco. Never Again!!! My fur baby looks like a rat! Clearly someone doesn't know how to cut a Shih-Tzu's hair...such a waste of money The good thing is that her hair will grow back The bad thing is that we have to explain to everyone why she looks like a rat, instead of the beautiful dog that she really is~ read more

Necessity sent me out today in search of a few essentials for my fuzzy kitty boys, notably a Furminator to try and cut down on their crazy shedding. Autumn may be a season when leaves drop, but typically shouldn't it be when cats bulk up their coats? Not mine, apparently, who think they are in the Southern Hemisphere. Their shedding penguin suits are doing a number on me and my carpet is slowly turning grey where the suffering vacuum is not up to the task, so off it was to Petco on the day's errand. As luck would have it, this Petco is spotlessly clean, bright, and shiny. Like most of its neighbouring stores in this plaza, I have little trouble parking, getting in and looking around. A pet adoption agency from Warren had a display of several kittens for adoption and a few of the silver tabbies nearly did me in, but I ventured on in search of my Furminator. I should know going into a pet store is like going shoe shopping at Nordstrom Rack. Strangely I'll go in looking for one thing and come out with a bag full of stuff. Petco was similar to this experience, mostly because I found the cat clearance shelf and promptly stocked up on some deeply discounted treats and cleaning supplies. Allergen reducing Pledge for $2? Great! Pet odor Febreeze for $1.50? Yay! My house will be cleaner ... as soon as I subject myself to deep cleaning all the wood fixtures and the like. I had little trouble locating what I was looking for in particular, though this Petco is pretty middle of the road in terms of the brands it stocks and quantities available. There are lots of alternatives for pet food, supplies, and grooming materials. I tend to compare prices between competitors and Petco does a good job of posting coupons, savings, and specials so I was getting a good deal. The loyalty card is worth it if you have multiple pets or live in the area, though my cats' food is not sold here. Employees are friendly, enthusiastic, and prompt. I had no trouble getting checked out and feeling welcome. read more

I went to adopt a cat and the employee at the store was very condescending and mean and wouldn't let me adopt one. She was an older woman - in her 50s - and said she didn't feel comfortable letting me adopt the cats because I was a "young man". I'm 22 years old. I could have easily proved that with my license and grew up on a farm taking care of animals including barn/house cats. I now work from my home in RO most of the time. A grown adult should be able to adopt a cat and men can love animals just as much as women. What is this misandry?? I went to Petsmart later that week and met my best friend. I attached a picture of him - and he is so playful and affectionate. I feel bad for the cats that will have to live in shelters longer/won't be able to find their forever home because of the crabby old woman at Petco in Troy. read more

Part of me is hesitant to give a positive review to a Petco after reading very very bad things about their standards of animal care years ago...but I can only base MY review on what I see, and again that was a few years ago. If that changes, I'll update my review accordingly. This location is convenient in the 15/Coolidge shopping mall, and they have the food we prefer for our Jack Russell. They have adoption fairs regularly, and I rarely have to wait in line more than a few minutes. It's tidy, the hamster/ferret/mouse/rat/cat cages seem clean (I don't know squat about fish, amphibians and reptiles so I can't comment there), and every single employee I've dealt with has been friendly. I do wish there was a Petsmart closer to my home, but for now, we'll keep heading over here. Although we don't utilize it, they do also offer grooming services. read more

This is a really nice pet store. It's very clean and stocks a large variety of natural cat & dog foods. The animals look well taken care of and clean. The staff is always friendly and very helpful when I have any questions. They have a great grooming salon and we took our boy for obedience classes which was very helpful. I like this store overall. Friendly staff, organized shelves but I've got two complaints. 1. Don't hire ignorant checkout clerks that are in such a hurry that they skip right through the transaction question of "would you like to donate"? Yes I typically do and would have if the inconsiderate person behind the counter hadn't taken the opportunity away. That is NOT caring for the animals needing donations. Especially when your franchise boasts of donating to those in need. I'm totally baffled by that. Why would you skip through???? This location is, like most others clean and organized. However, it is almost always lacking in available staff to answer questions, or the staff in hand is busy doing other things and grudgingly greets or serves customers. I come here regularly because it is my closest location, and this is pretty much the case all the time. I find their reptile stick to be short too. Generally the crickets are dead, and they don't carry live worms for my gecko. I'll keep coming back, but I'm not coming here when I have a question that needs answering. read more

We were told by a worker our puppy had to have his rabies shot before joining puppy playtime. Puppies have to be a certain age to get those shots so by the time we showed up at 6 months they told us he was too old to join. They let us join for a second before kicking him out because he was skittish (which I though was what puppy play time was for) and of course he's skittish bc we're socializing him late thanks to these employees. Not to mention the couple times we called asking they were rude and it seemed like we were bothering them just by asking what time it started. Disappointed our dog is not well socialized and they acted like we were bad parents when they kicked us out like that. read more

Compared to the other Petcos and PetSmarts, this one is way understaffed and/or mismanaged. In the two years I've been going to this Petco, simply FINDING an employee to ask for something is near impossible, let alone finding one that isn't too busy to talk to you. This is regardless of the time of day. It can be completely empty, almost eerie because there is just nobody there at 4pm on a Tuesday. Almost half the time there is no one at the registers! Even if I finally find someone to let them know I need to checkout, I may have to wait another 5 minutes. Sometimes longer, even though there may only be two other customers in the store. If you want to buy fish or something on a top shelf, you can easily plan on waiting 15+ minutes just to be told "I'll be right with you". I wish I were exaggerating. If it were just occasional waiting I wouldn't mind. I'll drive 5 extra miles just to avoid this place now. No other Petco or Petsmart has these problems. read more

this is a pretty standardly good petco. grooming, supplies and some animals for sale {of the small non-breeder variety - rats, mice, birds} they have cats from the local shelter, which i love, with notes about adoption and their personalities. i am a fan because i got my cat in chicago at a shelter and petco supported by offering new pet owners coupons to get started, most items free or almost free. it really helped me get a lot of things that i needed. i registered for the shopper card and keep going back because of it - there are considerable discounts to be had, plus a cheap store brand for staples. the store is always clean, the staff is helpful and i always find what i need. read more

There is no doubt in my mind that I have a favorite store and it is not pet care in the pet supplies Category of the larger pet industry. Instead, I am biased toward you preferring pet supplies plus locations over the bulk of a Petco or a Petsmart location. I have found first hand, that The employment at a Petsmart or Petco seems to fall shy of that of a pet supplies plus not only in now Village, but more importantly, in their amount of concern for their job and your pet. I think pet supplies plus raises the bar just ever so slightly to bring in that kind of employment. I know from going to the local Royal Oak location on many many occasions, and seeing them at the pause in the park both first and second years running along with us and three other main sponsors, and seeing them at the Bark for Life American Cancer Society event in Clawson last year, they have proven to me there a goodwill with in our community. This is what any store in our community should be, willing to do what other similar stores will not, willing to take stands against market items consumers desire, and that are willing to spend their own local dollars on local charities, sponsorships, and events. read more

I have been taking my cockapoo to this Petco to be groomed for a number of years. I've never had a problem until the last time I took her in. Her cut was terrible! It was choppy. (I had to shave her shorter to even out her cut.) I complained and showed her to the store manager. I was given a refund for the cut. My cockapoo is 15 years old and she has been on heart medication for the last couple of years. When I recently called to get a grooming appointment with a different groomer, they told me because of her age and heart condition they couldn't take her any longer. (She was 15 years old with a heart condition the last few times I had taken her there.) When I spoke to the store manager, he said it was Petco's policy. I'm not sure how to even begin this review. Basically, I observed an employee slap and grab a dog, while grooming it. I am aware of the way you should handle dogs while grooming, and slapping is not part of that. You would think you could trust the grooming here, considering it is in the front of the store, surrounded by windows. The dog looked scared and nervous, as many dogs are while being groomed, standing on a table, with strangers, and weird sounds, it's expected. And I think it should also be expected that they be handled with compassion and care. I called Petco corporate and the rep. called the store while I was on the line. The manager offered to call me and explain to me the policy and process of their grooming, but I declined. I did not want to argue with anyone about what I saw. I saw a slap. That's the end of the story. I don't want coupons, or a discount, or anything like that- I told the rep, I just wanted to make the company and manager aware of what I observed. read more

What a joke. I've tried twice now to order a reptisun 10.0 uvb bulb for my bearded dragon online. The first time it came shattered and when I took it back to the store near me the manager wouldnt give me my money back,only put it on a giftcard. So I tried a second time to order it, I even called the customer service line to make sure a note was put on my order to package the bulb properly and/or labeled fragile. Today my second package came. They put my tiny 34 inch bulb in a giant 4 ft box with two pieces of bubble wrap, not even around the bulb box. Needless to say it was shattered again. Took it back to my local store again but this time delt with a different manager. Thankfully he was able to put my money on my credit card and sympathized with my situation. Your company might want to reconsider the shipping company you use or train the associates to properly package fragile items. I only give two stars because the manager the second time was extremely helpful and polite. read more

I love this Petco. I had one of my dogs get his nails trimmed and they did a great job. Although they were about 15minutes late, they apologized and gave me a coupon for $5 off my next purchase. Half the staff are playing on there cell phones and when you ask them for help, they act like you're inconveniencing them and rather then assist you, they walk away and say they will call someone to help you. I am not typically a reviewer on Yelp. However, I had to write this one because of the due diligence and professionalism of Don, the Team Leader, at Petco Troy. I was at Petco Troy on Wendsday morning and received a survey in my email this morning (Friday), which I decided to take. I mentioned in my survey that I was disappointed by the lack of sales staff that were on the floor and the lack of assistance I was receiving, which was a surprise because their staff is usually very on point at this location. Don gave me call to follow up with me on my feedback, he explained the situation (two Guiana Pigs were sick that morning :( and staff was in the back preparing to take them to the vet), he apologized for it, and he truly tried to and successfully rectified the situation. The customer service that I have just received from Petco will make me a lifelong customer and I sincerely appreciate the value that they show for their customers. Don and I continued the call by talking about the new dog food that I purchased and he also ran over important things to note about the food, which I greatly appreciated it! read more

I used to take my cavapoo and maltipoo there to be groomed all of the time. For a few years I went elsewhere and returned to find the one stylist I trusted had moved. I went ahead and made an appointment anyway. What a disaster. My Cavapoo's face looks all chopped up and her ears, although a suitable length, are thick and out of proportion to the rest of her face. The Maltipoo's ears are longer in one side, the face is fuller and longer on one side. Aside from that they cut under his tail too closely and it is now infected. Something must have traumatized him because he has not stopped shaking since his visit. Think twice before using this place because it is now a crap shoot as to how the dog will look. read more
