I've only eaten breakfast here a handful of times, after cycling with the wife on Saturday mornings, but I love the food here. It's the motivation for me to complete the ride. The prices are cheap, the food is good and made from real stuff, not like Denny's food. You get good portions, and good coffee, so I can't complain too much. I ordered the enchiladas Mexico and they were good. The Adobe sauce was delish and the refried beans ...tasty! I found it odd that on top of the white cheese they sprinkled it with Parmesan cheese. I found it odd but it was good so I let it slide. WHAT I WILL NOT LET SLIDE IS THAT THE GUACAMOLE WE ORDERED WAS NOT 100% MADE OF AVOCADOS. Eh. I love dive spots, especially when the food is hearty and served with a smile. Tecate has the service down, but the food just doesn't live up to it. The salsa isn't spicy, is thin, and doesn't seem all that fresh. The parrillada, served up a massive portion of greasy, tough steak fajitas, leftover garlic shrimp, soggy cubed potatoes, a scoop of guacamole, and mealy pico de gallo. I've been coming here for a very long time. And my wife and I come on a regular basis. The staff is friendly and attentive. The food (most of it) is pretty darn good. I was a regular at this restaurant until a few days ago. The server here is very rude she triple charged my card and upon me calmy mentioning to her "oh my card was charged 3 times" she hysterically started screaming out "but i did not charge you" making a show inside the whole retaurant people were looking at us and everything. She then made a comment on how i never tip her and yeah i never do because she always treats me like crap shes very rude i jusr came here because its close to work. I did however notice from all the days there that if your a person of color she treats them very very bad and if not her whole attitude changed towards white people. I read the bad reviews and wonder what alternate universe I must be living in. This is our go-to place for tex-mex. Chips and salsa are not their strong suit but the spicy green avacado salsa that Norma has been making is great. Service is set me a slow but I don't care. The delicious food is worth it. Decent margaritas. Enchiladas rojas, nachos with chicken fajita meat, quesadillas, pechuga tecate, enchiladas mexico. All standout dishes. Never have had an issue with cleanliness or extra charges on anything. We substitute potatoes in place of the rice be a use they are really good. We have been treated like family for 25 years. I've lived in Houston almost my entire life. As a result, I feel as if I have a pretty good idea about what makes for good Tex-Mex restaurant. My wife and I are frequent visitors here, so much so that they know us. We are "regulars" and this is our go-to Tex-Mex restaurant. Now, having said that, I would never say that the food is outstanding at any Tex-Mex restaurant, because it just does not lend itself to that type of description. Tex-Mex can be delicious, hearty and filling, but it is rarely something to write home about. The food here is no exception. It is good, solid Tex-Mex. On the other hand, I can say without equivocation that the frozen margaritas are about as good as they get. And I have had a lot of frozen margaritas in my 50+ years. What prompted me to write this review, however, is a prior review where someone said that the wait staff added a gratuity for a party of three without asking and was thereafter rude about it. We have going here for years - never once has there ever been an issue with the bill - never. The people at Tecate are friendly, pleasant and honest. I have been going to this place for 15 years and walk away thinking how good it is every time. They have the best lime margaritas around in my opinion. Good food for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
