We decided to give this place a try for lunch since it was close to the house and we'd never set foot in 10 years. There was plenty of unpaved parking and we had to go through some puddles and mud because it was very rainy that day. Despite being a lunch hour, the place probably had around five occupied tables. We were greeted with chips and salsa and they did get our drink orders pretty quickly. We tried the Carne Asada, and the Mole lunch plate. Both came with their designated tortillas and sides of rice and beans. The mole plate was terrible, definitely had no seasoning and the rice definitely felt a couple of days old. It was not the traditional Mexican rice I was expecting. For the Carne Asada, the meal was a little bit better, but again the rice was hard and felt old. The beans had no flavor as well. Also, the menu was very hard to read since the font and background colors were clashing. As far as the service, I will say it could definitely improve. The food felt like it took a long time to arrive to the table, despite not many people being there. I don't think I will be coming back to this place again simply because of the quality of food. read more

Finally tried La Carreta after driving past it so much. We went for lunch and there were only a few tables open, which is a great sign! We were quickly given chips and salsa both of which were very good. I thought the prices were really good. My husband and I had lunch for $22 before tip. Our waiter was really helpful and gave us suggestions on what to get. They even had a man singing and playing the guitar. It was the perfect volume and he did a really nice job. You could tell people in there were repeat customers. We definitely plan on returning and trying more of the menu! read more

Stopped by this place and brought my parents here! Food was ok it was a standard authentic Mexican place that had fresh, fast, flavorful breakfast. I got an Uber Eats pick up for breakfast here and the breakfast taco for $3.50 might as well have been a burrito. The sucker was so big I couldn't even finish it and had to save it for later. Really cute cozy spot. I live nearby and was craving Mexican so decided to give this place a shot. To start, they don't have a soda fountain. The chips and salsa were excellent. Very interesting tasting salsa...spicy tomatillo maybe? I ordered the Carnitas as that's my go-to at every mexican place. It came out super quickly which was nice and it looked delicious. The pork was tender but lacked seasoning. The rice was that classic Mexican rice & was good. The refried beans had to be straight from the can. They were watery and very bland. I was complaining about wanting lunch but not wanting to cook or pay $$ for delivery. The tacos were really good. Filled with nice tender beef fajita and lettuce and tomatoes. It was the perfect amount to fill up my belly. The rice was super plain so had to add salsa to make it more fancy. Their salsa is good too. Not spicy at all. The chips were nice and thin and crunchy. I really wanted to like this place, hoping to have a hidden gem close to home where I could find great Mexican food. The dining room is cozy and charming, full of color, and the staff seems neighborly enough. Alas,the restaurant has a significant weakness and that unfortunate opportunity for improvement is the kitchen. I ordered the Huevos Rancheros, over medium, with the optional carnitas upgrade. First came out the gratuitous chips and salsa. I found the tiny rolled pieces of tomato (or, chile) skin in it off-putting--similar to finding a hand full of whole cardamom pods in a curry. One taste was enough. When the dish arrived I was dismayed to see the eggs and white steamed-looking potatoes, swimming in what appeared to be a slightly-pink water with a few pieces of tomato and canned green Chiles here and there. After using 4 napkins to soak up all that water, I noticed the "canitas" consisted of 2 small slices of waxy-looking pork that had obviously been nuked. The pork tasted old and stale: not worth eating. In fact, I was a bit worried that eating it might lead to some gastric distress later in my day so I left it. The refried beans were runny to the point where they would run through the tines of the fork if I tried to pick some up. I finally decided to chop everything up and mix it together to make it more palatable, but I could not save it. Nothing was seasoned--nothing. The beans, eggs, potatoes: completely bland. I felt a strong need to grab the salt, but that didnt do much in the way of flavor. The restaurant seems to have a following, but I really don't understand it. This was the very worst "Mexican" food I've found in Houston. Very disappointing. read more

Not even after that we were offered more menus and we had to go ask for them ourselves. Let me add the place was pretty empty so besides other 2 tables we had the place pretty much to ourselves. It was my first time trying this restaurant after passing by it for years. I called in a to go order of a breakfast plate with chorizo & eggs plus I asked for cheese to be added. The plate included tortillas, beans, and potatoes. The beans were just not good. The chorizo was minimal and they used yellow American cheese rather than the white Mexican cheese. I'm all about supporting local small businesses, but I can't support this one because I just didn't like the food. I was very happy to find a good little Mexican food place where you can have a good meal for an economical price.
