Hands down one of the best seafood Mexican spots I have ever been to. You walk in it is very spacious very simply decorated but do not let that fool you. You are greeted warmly when you enter the place. The servers do such a great job making recommendations. We had a four-year-old child and the 4-year-old child ate our adult food! She loved the food so much she was dancing! We had the grilled snapper and grilled shrimp. We ended up ordering more grilled shrimp it was just that great. The shrimp cocktail was also just as delectable. They have so many variations of seafood you cannot miss. The lemonade there was just so refreshing I regret not ordering some to go. I don't know why I haven't written a review sooner... My family and I have been coming to this restaurant for 25 years and it is the BEST! Their grilled red snapper topped with shrimp and scallops on a bed of grilled onions and served with fried rice....hands down the most delicious and freshest seafood I've ever eaten! And it is consistently perfect! For 25 years we have ordered this and it is always exceptional! And as good as the food is, the staff is even better! They are always friendly, professional and kind and sadly good customer service is hard to come by these days. Between the food and the service, my husband and I chose to host our wedding rehearsal dinner here almost 23 years ago...and everyone loved it! Our family had been telling us about this place for a very long time, and how amazing it was, and we were so excited that it was opened when we were in town! The picture does not do it justice with how amazing this place was we got the red snapper and had shrimp as well and they do a really good job of giving you the correct amount of food for the amount of people that are at the table and they did a wonderful job! We got a side of the fried rice, and it was the perfect addition to the fish and shrimp. The onions that were underneath the fish were probably the best onions that I have ever had in my entire life and when added to the fried rice it was just delicious. The shrimp was also super flavored and just amazing. Highly recommend this place. Came here on a Sunday at around noon and found the place nearly empty. To start off we ordered the vuelve a la vida which was a combination of ceviche, oysters, shrimp and octopus with cocktail sauce. It was sooooo good we ended up getting 2. We also ordered a dozen oysters and we were pretty disappointed by them. They did not taste fresh at all. My friend got grilled fish diabla style with rice and he rated it an 8/10. "Perfect amount of spice" he said. We each had some margaritas and we loved them! The place has a really old time Hispanic homey feel to it which made us feel right at home. Came here for a late lunch/early dinner. Hole in the wall but the food was delicious! It was a busy Sunday afternoon. We had a 15min wait for 2 people (were told up to 25min). Service was a little slow. Covid protocols: They do limit amount of guests dining and enforce social distancing. Staff wears masks. We ordered the mixed ceviche which was delicious! ¡Me encanta Tampico! Set in a tropical world of its own, Tampico boasts some of the freshest seafood in the city. Venturing through the front door, you'll find all of their fresh goods displayed on ice. Grab a seat wherever you please, but I suggest the upstairs open-air patio. We started with a round of Tecate Light and micheladas (good, I might add, though not as spicy as Golden Seafood's), along with a heaping large bowl of queso to dip our warm and toasty tortilla chips. Don't you just love Mexican food? What other restaurants, besides Italian, offer complimentary starters? Well, there's Red Lobster's Cheddar Bay Biscuits ... but who's counting? Like the lovely Cory O, I consider myself a soupoholic, so naturally I went straight for the Caldo de Mariscos (seafood soup), which came with a serving of fried rice and garlic bread. The soup was so warm, filled with zesty spices, plump oysters, shrimp, fish, lots of cilantro and all without a lick of grease. It was a pretty generous serving, so next time I'll go for the cup. Thank goodness for their menu with pictures, with made ordering helpful for my buds Jody S and Tommy P. The Camarones Tampico was a pound of boiled shrimp with potatoes engulfed in, what seemed like, Cajun crawfish spices. A hell of a lot easier to eat than crawfish, this was a winner. T-Pep went big and ordered the Seafood Platter: fried scallops (Never had before, I'm interested), fried fish, fried shrimp, fried rice, fried goodness! Other yelpers are right about the service. It wasn't "bad" per-say. Hostess and servers were all incredibly friendly, each and everyone shouting out hello as we found our seats. They just forgot items, like lime and hot sauce, from time to time and had to be reminded. I'll most certainly return to Tampico and be more adventurous with the menu. It was my first time here and I ordered my favorite dish... oysters on the half shell. I always love them, but, for some reason, these were memorably delicious. I guess, maybe, they were just that fresh... like the Budweiser that is brewed down the street. The decor will remind you of the better times in Tampico, Mexico. The atmosphere is lively. I enjoyed the meal, the seasoning was good, and the place had a good local vibe. This is the kind of place I enjoy hanging out in. I have been eating fresh seafood in this area since most of the restaurants were just small seafood markets and ACTUALLY, you buy they fry it type of places. Tampico is by far my favorite seafood place in the area. They have a great selection of seafood entrees on their menu at incredible prices, but for a real treat order something at market prices. For a fabulous experience, I recommend the Huachinango a la Plancha, which translated means grilled red snapper. The whole fish is seasoned just right and grilled to perfection. Why stop there? Ask them to top it with some grilled shrimp and scallops. You won't regret it! It will arrive at your table sizzling hot with a huge pile of fried rice. Now be patient! The BF had been wanting to check this place out for quite some time, and I became convinced when a fellow resident and Yelp review follower raved about the Snapper a la Plancha. The chips and salsa were standard/average and the BF ordered Aguachiles for an app. Now even though I tried one (and it was good) I just couldn't get past the fact that the top of the shrimp that was butter flied open looked white, i.e. raw and the underside looked pink, i.e. cooked. So I tried just the one and left him to his own devices. I ordered the 3 piece Snapper a la Plancha with the House el Mojo sauce and refried beans instead of fries or fried rice. While my fish was good (as were the beans) it was just OK. Nothing spectacular in my opinion. This place is great! When you walk in there is the counter with fresh fish and seafood. The building clearly has some years on it, but it's the good kind you'd expect from a place like this. I knew something good was about to come even before we sat down. When we sat down we were given a basket of fresh chips, salsa, and we ordered a side of guac. We were also greeted promptly for our drink order. Just as a side note, It seems to me that the only reason it has a lower rating on yelp is because people simply don't know what to order. Mistake #1 by other yelpers: Not getting the Red Snapper Mistake #2: not getting the Red Snapper Mistake #3: not getting the Red Snapper If you go there get the fish aka the Red Snapper. Its the main image on their menu and it's obviously what they are known for. They cover the fish in a red spice blend and cook it to perfection, served on a bed of equally delicious sautéed onions. We also got 1/2 pound of both shrimp and scallops with the same spices on it. You can get a special sauce put on top of the fish but there really is no need. The only thing needed is the squeeze of a lime. Your side choices are either French fries or fried rice. It may seem unusual to have fried rice with this kind of meal but it actually works really well. If French fries are more your thing then go for it, but I'd do the fried rice every time. We finished up and were given cleaning wipes for our hands. Overall I was blown away. If you like fish and want to mix it up a little then go to this place. There's a reason it's been around for over 20+ years. I'll for sure be back! read more

This place has been mentioned in Zagat and Chowhound, and I must say that I had my expectation somewhat high, even though I kept it somewhat low, since it didn't really reach to me by buzz of mouth while I have been living in Houston for at least 21 years. And rightly so. This place, even though it has also been raved by several magazines as a cheap eat for good seafood, is mediocre-good. I would give it 3 1/2 stars. The prices aren't exactly cheap, but for seafood, I think they're reasonable. Although a red snapper for 14.99 a pound sounds like a lot (especially if you can get the same for $3.99 a pound at Hong Kong Supermarket in Chinatown). But since it's a restaurant, comes with sides, and comes cooked, I shrugged off the upmarked prices as standard practice. Plus, it's supposed to be "famous." The sides, however, were lackluster. You choose from french fries, rice (fried, almost as if it was Chinese), or a plain salad. And of the three, the french fries were the best. My table also got to see shrimp tacos, fish tacos, chicken tacos, and ceviche, besides the "famed" grilled snapper we ordered. Tacos: Shrimp - spicy, not as good as the chicken. Chicken - good. Fish - better than shrimp. Ceviche: Mexican/Central American style ceviche (basically, mixed with ketchup to give it a reddish flavor and a somewhat faux-cocktail flavor). I admit, I'm biased, I like the original Peruvian style that's popular in South America than the Central American style ceviche. Nevertheless, it was still good. Snapper: Heavily seasoned, tasty, and cooked right. But I think I would have appreciated the snapper more if it wasn't so heavily seasoned. It came whole, on a bed of sauteed onions and some pepper. And the service... well it started out badly, then another waiter saw the situation and he helped around tending to our table's needs - so overall, I'll say the service was mediocre. I leaned more to 3 stars instead of 4 also because the fillets of salmon sitting on a plate in the refrigerated display case for everyone to see were all old - and there were cracks on top of that, in its flesh. So I don't recommend getting anything with salmon. After all, Mexicans don't eat much salmon - they normally stick to snapper or some other more common fish. If you're in the area and want to eat some fresh seafood from a seafood market, I'll probably would direct you over to Connie's (?) farther north on Airline just before 610 North Loop. read more

I come from a coastal area in Mexico, and I always compare the taste of the motherland to places here when it comes to seafood. Anyways, in Yucatán we have a similar dish by the Mayan name Tikin Xic, which the fish I had used the same food seasoning known as recado colorado. It was very good. A special extra - the guacamole. sooooo good. ceviche tostadas are good too - my bro likes those. We like to eat upstairs - more cozy, big TVs to watch the Texas games! Good service too. My dad and I wanted Mexican food on Christmas Eve after church. Our options were limited and we decided to stop here. Not bad, but not the best I've ever had. The food: I ordered the ceviche and a taco a la carte because I couldn't decide what I wanted. The ceviche is in a tomato based sauce and is somewhat sweet. I'm used to ceviche in lime juice which apparently is only done with the aguachiles (shrimp ceviche/cocktail). So it was OK. It had pico de gallo, avocados and tilapia. Served with saltines but I opted to eat it with chips. The taco was definitely the highlight of the meal. The steak was seasoned to perfection and juicy. I would definitely get the tacos again. They also give chips and salsa. Salsa was excellent and had kick. It was a red tomato salsa with a garlic aftertaste and served warm. Drink: I had an horchata and it definitely hit the spot. Loaded with cinnamon and a rice milk flavor. Ambience: Casual | booths and tables | TVs for soccer fans | bars on windows (kind of a rough part of town) They do have an assortment seafood but I am not the biggest fan of seafood.
