I feel very fortunate to have found Technesia and Dan. My MacBook Pro fell on to the floor twice in one day, causing it to become frozen on the dreaded "black screen." At the Apple Genius Bar I was told that wiping the hard drive clean was my only option, a stressful idea because I would lose unsaved data. I felt skeptical about this advice anyway. I made an appointment at another repair place, describing the nature of the problem. After some useless discussion, the tech admitted that they knew nothing about addressing the issue, and I should come back when the person who knew about it was there. I felt it was careless that they set up the appt. with me in the first place with an unqualified person, costing me a round trip uber ride. It was very discouraging. While continuing to look for help, I also began looking at new MacBooks, thinking I might have purchase one. Then I came across Technesia online. It was attractive to me because I no longer had faith that the larger companies could help. In this case, Dan is Technesia, so working directly with him means no big business red tape, concerns that recommendations may be linked to product sales, and the ability to ask questions and get immediate feedback. Dan's skills make him the exact person I had hoped to find. He is a very smart, self taught computer expert, who can take apart and build computers. How much more does one need to know? Of course, I still had doubts that he could fix my computer when I dropped it off. However, the very next evening, I received a text that my computer was ready. When he showed me that it was, in fact, working perfectly, and he had successfully completed all data recovery, I was shocked! My desktop had been cluttered with screen shots, but now it was completely clear except for one folder in which Dan had organized all of the documents, etc. that were on the computer before the accident. Dan charged me a minimal amount for a service that I'm sure would have cost hundreds of dollars more elsewhere. I added more to the payment as a "tip" which still didn't cover the service he provided, in the time he accomplished it. I am still amazed that my computer has been restored, and that I didn't have to buy a new one! I had a 15" mid 2010 i5 256GB MacBook Pro that just recently stopped starting up. That model had some kind of graphics card recall that Apple supported for 3 years and of course I found out about it way after the warrantee was up. I had so many Logic 9 sessions and old AU plugs running as part of thousands of old music compositions. I needed to keep them alive and at least be able to archive them. Found Dan at Technesia on Yelp. I've used other well known services in Philly and have been disappointed every time. These "service centers" also sell Apple products and to keep they're status as Apple providers they must also SELL Apple products. Which is where the conflict comes in. Those companies would much rather sell you new hardware then actually fix your old one. ANYWAY.... Dan proposed finding me a newer faster 13" unibody from the same period which had none of the 15"s graphics problems, with an i7 processor, replacing its drive with a new SSD drive, and cloning the old drive on my 15" so it would open and operate EXACTLY as my old machine FOR LESS than finding an old card (with its inherent factory problems and no guarantee it wouldn't go bad in 6 months) and replacing it. DONE. He did the entire process for a super reasonable price. Technesia is now THE ONLY service provider I will use from now on. This fix may seem simple to a tech but to an end user in need of his tools of the trade with only the usual suspects to chose from it is nothing short of a revelation! A real service provider. An Independent! Right here in the South Philadelphia. Go there without hesitation. As an independent myself, I know what a word of mouth reputation is worth. It is literally ALL I have besides the quality of work that may never be public knowledge otherwise. Dan is like me. I live couple blocks from this place and never knew this computer repair place; it looks like a regular south-philly home with 'Te' logo on the window. Doesn't look like store at all. So I brought my laptop to Dan after it stop booting and showing error messages. He diagnosed and found out that the hard drive is damaged. Couple months ago I had the same exact problem with this laptop. I went to a computer store down the south to get it fixed and now the same problem came back again. I found out that the other computer store replaced my hard drive with a USED hard drive, they couldn't save my data from the old hard drive (they said the hard drive is unreadable) and they said it would cost me around $1500 to get my data recovered by other company. Now I have 2 dead hard drives with my work documents. Within 2 days I got a call from Dan. He successfully recovered all my work documents and photos from my old hard drives. He ordered a new hard drive, cleaned the computer (he even show me the photo of all the dust inside my laptop) and turn my dead Dell laptop into a working laptop. I am amazed by his ability to recover all my files and photos while the other 'big named' computer store couldn't do it. Not only good at what he do, Dan also an easy-to-talk tech guy. Honest and great service!!! I took my MacBook laptop here after I accidentally spilled wine on it. After reading all of these glooming reviews, I decided to use their service. The whole transaction is super easy. I called Technesia to schedule an appointment. As a busy uPenn student with very limited free time, Dan (the owner) willing to work around my schedule. Technesia is located around the driving distance from University of Pennsylvania area. It only takes me 15 minutes driving from the campus. When I arrived there he quickly diagnosed my MacBook, he tell me what actually happened, what was damaged, what need to be replaced and the total cost for the repair. Actually he only charge $80 for the service. A lot cheaper than what's Apple Genius Bar quoted. Dan also show me some other selection of parts from different vendors, their price, and shipping. I decided to get the high quality part for my MacBook Pro. Within a couple days I got a call from Dan, my macbook is fixed and ready to pick up! Dan is very professional, friendly, and knowledgeable. His dogs are very well trained and well behaved! His price is very low compared to other computer repair business but it doesn't affecting his service quality. Dan quickly and correctly diagnosed the problem with my iMac and within minutes had the screen out to access the defective part and verify the part number. Then with me in the room looking over his shoulder-he went to his computer to search for the part at the best price off the internet. The cost estimate was the price of the parts plus the flat rate for the service. The whole process was completely transparent and although some defective parts were expensive to replace, they were not marked up at all- his cost (price plus shipping) was what I paid for the parts. I did get an estimate for the repair, and the final bill was the same amount to the penny. I spent the better part my 37 year career as a telecom technician working on inter-office carrier and high bandwidth private circuits for corporate and government WAN. I'd like to think that I have pretty good instincts about how truly competent technical people approach their work. I think this guy is really good and would recommend him to anyone who wants a no BS fix for their computer woes. read more

Dan is terrific! My laptop was presumed dead by Apple Support. Apple offered to have me send my laptop to them (while I pay all shipping costs) to have them take a closer look and even if they aren't able to fix it I would still have to pay several hundred for their time. I then took my laptop to other tech repair places in the city. They gave me estimates ranging between $200-$300 with no guarantee of actually fixing my laptop. I was upset and experiencing all the stages of grief until a friend referred me to Dan. Dan was incredibly flexible and accommodating to my schedule. As I was explaining what happened he began cleaning my laptop for me! He took the time to listen to me and to explain how he'll fix my laptop. His rates are incredible. My laptop was fixed and the data was restored in less than 24 hours! I am so grateful for Dan and the time he took to not only fix my laptop, but to speak/listen to me as a kind human being. Last semester, I had an unfortunate accident where my Macbook was covered in sauce and wasn't charging properly. When I went to Apple, they said I would have to replace the whole logic board and pay at least 1k to repair. As a college student entering finals season, there was no way I would be able to afford that but I also needed my laptop fixed ASAP. Luckily, I found Technesia online, saw that they did liquid damage for a reasonable price, and contacted Dan about my problem. He was super responsive and I was able to drop off my Macbook the day after I contacted him. He was very transparent about his timeline and possible ways to approach the repair. Dan helped replace my computer battery and IO board after I managed to damage the IO board to the point where it wasn't charging any battery (thanks to a minor spill). I thought it was just a battery problem because my MacBook Air had been telling me to service my battery for the past year -- and it would have been easy for Dan to just replace the battery for me and take my money. But he opened up my computer, ran a diagnostic, and found the deeper problem that I wouldn't have guessed at. He also did everything at a very reasonable price. You're going to have to come back a second time to actually replace parts if you need new parts, since Dan has to order them online first, but he was very transparent about the whole process and patient in explaining everything. He is an amazingly talented guy running an honest business by providing great service. I'm glad I found him to resolve my computer woes! I called Dan regarding a hardware issue I was having with my Lenovo laptop. I had called several other computer repair shops in the Philadelphia area, every one of them said they wouldn't be able to diagnose or even look at my PC that day. Dan is the complete opposite of these guys. He answered the phone immediately, diagnosed the problem over the phone, and within 45 minutes I was watching him take apart my laptop. He works out of his apartment in Point Breeze, South Philly. Don't be thrown. This is a benefit to you. Because Dan doesn't waste money on fancy offices the price of his service is considerably lower. He charged me the parts at cost and a very reasonable fee for service. I would've had to pay 3-5 times more had I taken it to the manufacturer and at least double anywhere else. He'll text you with updates throughout the repair process and is kind, practical and to the point. He'll even share a beer or glass of wine with you if you stop by at the right time. Great experience from start to finish! I hadn't read the reviews (just looked at all the 5-star ratings) so I was a little surprised at the location (South Philly row home). But after I got excellent service at very reasonable prices, I appreciated the fact that I didn't pay for lots of overhead costs. I had a hard drive crash on my iMac and my backup Macbook Air had been almost useless for over a year. I called Dan on a late Saturday afternoon, he said bring it right over and within ten minutes of arriving he'd taken apart the iMac, diagnosed the problem and explained the solutions (with options at different price points). I knew I was in the right place. For $416 Dan * replaced my dead HD with a new SSD that I'd purchased already * replaced the slow and useless HD on the Air w/ a new 1 TB SSD (included in this price) * saved the data from both machines onto the external drive that he recommended I buy from Staples Payment was easy with PayPal. I'm writing my first Yelp review ever for Technesia. Dan deserves 5 stars! In February 2018 I had my computer repaired at an authorized Apple service provider in the city. When my mid 2010 MacBook Pro stopped charging this spring, I took it to Technesia suspecting the battery. Dan confirmed the battery was swelling when I dropped it off, and later showed me that the service provider had installed an aftermarket battery, not an original Apple part. Dan provided timely service and great communication about when the battery he ordered - the genuine part made by Apple - was going to arrive. He cleaned the laptop and replaced the rubber pads on the underside. He installed the new battery and ran diagnostics to make sure the rest of the hardware was ok. For all this, he charged a very reasonable price of $150 for parts and labor. For comparison, back in 2018 I paid $130 at the authorized Apple service provider for an aftermarket battery that almost exploded inside my computer. Go to Technesia! You won't regret it. read more

Who's the Man? Dan's the Man! According to Apple corporate my Mac Pro (early 2008) was obsolete. That meant no further updates, no upgrades, no apple care and no manufactured parts. Recently, an error message appeared on my monitor, "Check Cable Signal." I Iost my internet connection, all my desktop folders, no access to email, the dock was gone. I'm left with a black, opague monitor screen and that unwanted error message. Apple Corporate suggests buy a new computer. It took Dan 2 tries and a week to permanently fix my Mac Pro. That's o.k. 1. Dan replaced my dead logic board with a functioning, used one. 2. Originally, my Mac Pro came with 2 memory boards. Dan discarded a faulty memory board and 4 GB of corrupted RAM. Now my "...obsolete.." (sic) Mac Pro is running great with 1 memory board and 8 GB of RAM. Dan charged $230 for parts and labor. Money well spent. The irony? I accidentally spilled cold tea on my HP laptop. When I was frantically cleaning up the spill, my laptop started making noises and the screen went blank. I thought it was completely fried and that I had lost all my files. I called to ask if he could fix it the next day because I was desperate to have it fixed as soon as possible and he was able to see me that day. I was only there for an hour and a half and my laptop and all my files were saved! I honestly was expecting the worst and somehow he was able to recover everything. He is such a nice guy and he really knows what he's doing. He works fast and also explains to you what's wrong so you're not left in the dark. And while you're waiting, you can play with his friendly dogs as a way to relax from a near disaster. He does work out of his home so it might be a little surprising, but it is totally worth it. The price was also very cheap for something so serious. I would definitely recommend going to Dan for your computer issues. read more

Dan is a computer magician!! I had all but given up on my laptop ever working again, when I read these reviews on Yelp and decided to take it to Dan as a last ditch effort. My logic board fried a few months ago (supposedly, a fairly common problem with early 2011 macbook pros) which caused my battery to expand, which also caused my mouse pad to pop out (let's just say, the poor thing had a lot of issues...). I had taken out the battery myself, but the fried logic board would only allow my laptop run for about 3 minutes at a time before it would crash on me. Dan was able to repair my logic board(!!), which saved me hundreds of dollars from buying a new one. He also popped my mousepad back in and the whole thing looks brand-spanking new. He kept my laptop for about 2 days to see how it survived and gave me lots of great updates and tips along the way. He also said he's going to check back in after a week or so to see how it's doing. After having several bad experiences w/the Apple Store on Walnut street: (I.E., getting an iPhone 6 at 2pm & they said all my info would appear from the iPhone 5 within 3-4 hours--which i had surgical case info for the next day on it. The Apple Store would NOT see me the same afternoon without the Apple bar appointment after just purchasing the phone & getting a guarantee the info would be on my phone. Instead of allowing the sales associate to help, a rent a cop physically made me leave the store--- I needed the Patient info for a 7:30AM surgery the next morning-- the cop got hostile & said you have to come back tomorrow. The patient couldn't have her surgery.) I reached out to Technesia & they are experts with the Apple products. I will NEVER go to Apple Store again without asking Technesia first. They are great with Apple MacBook-- issue w/spills & not turning on. They can fix it for less than Apple or tell you what the best option is. read more

Yet another 5-star review. Dan is the best. First time, my parrot spilled wine on the MacBook Pro keyboard, screen blinked and went dark, would not come back on, I freaked out. Dan fixed it. He replaced all the keys the parrots had pulled off, too. Next time, parrot chewed the power cable and burned the piece the charger connects to. MacBook wouldn't charge. Dan fixed it! In the past, I've taken my laptop to places like Springboard Media, where I was told either it couldn't be fixed or it wasn't worth the cost. They have a fundamentally different view of the world. Dan understands how these machines actually work. They can indeed be fixed. And if they can be fixed, Dan can do it. You can trust him. In one week, Dan replaced the drive with a faster and more stable one (an SSD that are used in MACs) and I have a fully functioning laptop once more.
