Recently, I had to drop off a returned package at the USPS in Northbrook.  There was only one staff…read moremember behind the counter, a tall and thin middle-age black woman, whom I have encountered numerous times in the recent years.  As soon as I walked up and put the package on the counter, without any greetings to me, this woman pointed to a tablet in between her and me, and said "do the survey" in a tone that was like ordering me.  There were 3 emojis in the tablets, a smiley face, a neutral face, and an unhappy one.  I was unprepared, in a hurry, and didn't have time to think or ask, and just hit the smiley face.  She then scanned my package, gave me a receipt and said "here you go".  I said "thanks", and she said "you are welcome", and that was it.  What kind of survey was that?  How could they expect the customer to do a survey before any service was done?  What's the purpose of doing such a survey?  And doing the survey right in front of the staff member was just awkward!  It rendered the survey meaningless. This USPS used to be fully staffed back in the day.  There were a couple of friendly staff members whom I truly miss.

I believe he has retired a couple of years ago. With the USPS's on-going cost-cutting effort, nowadays the counter is just staffed with one member most of the time (by different people), and you may see two on some lucky days. This has led to longer waiting time, and the service level varies quite a bit, depending on whom you are dealing with. One of the staff members there has the practice of asking customers to rate her service in front of her (using a "smiley face machine"), sometimes even before the transaction begins. This would create pressure for customers to give her good ratings, and this should not be the way the survey is done. To be fair, the rating machine should be placed away from the staff, near the front door exit. Fortunately, with the advance of technology, people can accomplish a lot of the mailing services online. My wife recently needed to mail a couple of CDs, and we have found a cheaper way of mailing packages. On the USPS website, you can use "Click-N-Ship" to print mailing labels and pay for the shipment. The shipping fee for one CD (4 oz) using this method is $4.50. However, if we had taken it to the post office without the prepaid label and did it with an agent at the counter, it would have been $7.20 for the same size and weight. We could either arrange for a pickup from home, or drop off the packages at the post office. Just for the peace of mind, my wife preferred to have the packages dropped off so she could ask a staff member to scan the packages. Actually, you can just leave the packages in one of those mail bins/boxes without having a staff member scanning them, because there are tracking numbers on the prepaid mailing labels. We are glad that we could save some shipping fees by using the "Click-N-Ship" online.

Particularly for the people who work in the branches (postal delivery folks are fine), because it seems like at literally every post office people are just jerks. Every time they're monotone and completely disinterested in what they're doing. I worked in retail several years and of course it can be boring but I also said hello and tried to be cheerful to every person that I helped, and I just can't understand the attitude of practically shooting death rays at someone with the audacity to visit your workplace and need your assistance. But I came here to mail three cards, two to international addresses, and told the woman I needed stamps for them. I don't remember what question she asked but it was a good thing I specified that there were two international because she almost sold me three standard stamps. Then she kinda tossed them back to me and pointed me to where the drop slot was. OK, thanks.

However, this week I had another disappointment. I filed a Hold Mail card for the period May 14-18. Card was handed to counter person on May 11. My mail was delivered every single day!!!!! Thank goodness a neighbor checked each day. This on top of several missed delivery days in February and March. Informed Delivery lets me know what's late or missing. This post office needs better management or it should be closed.

Really disappointed with the UPS drivers dispatched out of this location. I had a package that I…read moredid not need to sign for that was going to be delivered today and live in a secure condo complex with a security camera at the foyer. Instead of having my package delivered, I received a notification that the UPS driver decided not to deliver my package ("attempted delivery") because there was "no secure location" to drop packages. In my experience, this is clear BS: I have seen UPS packages left in the foyer previously so it is clearly negligence or laziness and not any regard for the packages' safety. My next step was to call the UPS customer care line. It took me fifteen minutes to reach an actual human; said actual human was extremely dismissive and rude, and unhelpful. At times, it felt like she was actively trying to hide information from me: she kept mentioning that my packages would be available for pickup here, but never mentioned the address or even city of this pickup center. When I asked about the address, the lady on the line scoffed and acted as if I should just know these things. I tried to reschedule pickup here and was told that I would receive a call when the packages were ready for pickup. No such call came. Since I live very far from Northbrook and needed my packages ASAP, I had to pay $14 to have these packages rerouted to my local UPS store. Let's hope they actually show up. The icing on the cake: they never even left a "sorry we missed you" notice. Like, are you kidding me?

At the time, I had an eBay shipment that needed to be shipped out. I took a liking to its cute building which sat in a classy looking area nearby Glencoe Village Hall right in the heart of Glencoe! Via Village Ct, I was able to veer quickly into a parking spot rather than entering off of Hazel Ave. Along with its cute building exterior, the inside environment gave off a very positive vibe rather than a negative one. As I waited to be seen, I adored the postal clerks' interaction with a customer ahead of me, who had a young daughter. The interaction appeared so genuine which put a smile on my face immediately while in line and as I moved towards the counter to be helped. As someone who visits post offices regularly whether it be for Poshmark or eBay shipments, the postal clerk presented one of the friendliest vibes I have ever encountered at any post office location. After giving the clerk my package, he questioned me if it had anything liquid or hazardous inside then explained to me the shipment options for my package which I always choose the cheapest, hehe. As a Poshmark Ambassador on Poshmark, and someone with a 100% positive feedback rating on eBay as long as the package gets to my buyer I am always satisfied. I was on my way in minutes. I am terrible at doing the surveys pertaining to my visits at post offices, but best believe I always share some sort of a review. Being that I had a great experience, I would gladly utilize this United States Postal Service (Glencoe Post Office) again when in the area. ~ Embrace the journey. ~ Thomas G
